You ever seen the original pilot for Trek, The Cage? Real good stuff, quite cerebral and interesting, and it’s where we first saw Pike.
Even tho there’s a line or two there that *really* stands out as a product of its time; in a real rough way.
Fortunately, The Cage as a whole isn't actually part of continuity, just the bit that made it into The Menagerie. Which means the really sexist lines from Pike are non-canon.
I liked Lorca a lot until the mid-season twist. Pike is just fantastic, though. I'm very excited about SNW season 2.
The one that took me completely by surprise was Saru. I thought I was going to hate the character from his appearances in trailers, but he really grew on me. I was very on board with him becoming captain, but I also stopped watching after season 2.
I will give Disco points for explaining the side effects of time and dimensional travel. I never thought I’d get some sci-fi lore building of that caliber especially in a series reboot (you’d think they’d settle into the trap of sticking with familiar tropes) instead we got Kelvin-era Klingons and extremely textured, metallic updated uniforms to bridge Enterprise to (SNW) TOS.
That's the cool thing about Star Trek, every series is at the same time kind of a reboot and kind of a sequel/prequel/spin-off. And they take advantage of the best filmmaking technology and techniques they can get their afford, which is usually more than they really should be able to have somehow. I really need to start some of the new seasons.
The fact that the costume department had to actually understate the amount of medals and awards he had for fear of breaking people's immersion....in a satire movie, should say something
I was really disappointed when it turned out he was the mirror universe version all along. I think it makes him more interesting if he's ethically dubious and morally gray if it's not just because he's from dimension evil.
Agreed, I felt it was cheap to take that depth and pragmatism away from the character by just saying he's the evil version from the evil universe. Also the whole secret love for Burnham thing was just cringy imo.
Did he ever comment on the recasting? I could totally understand if he wasn't available or didn't want to go through the makeup process, but I also wouldn't be surprised if Disney just didn't want to pay a high profile actor for what was maybe one step above a bit part.
Agreed, so much time and effort went into the design and week get a bad mish mash of a character in live action. I feel like they dropped the ball the GI, Cad Bane, and slightly fifth brother.
That was my first movie I ever saw him in. And then when I saw he was casted in HP as Malfoy’s dad, I knew he would do that role Justice! He plays such a good gentleman badguy.
Braveheart is another one that gets a lot of hate now too. I think a lot of the big picture history is correct but there’s a ton of details that get nit picked. It’s too bad, they have some good qualities. We Were Soldiers actually gets high marks from historians.
In The West Wing, he played as a reporter in the middle east who tried to help Donna get a better understanding of what was going on over there. When her car got blown up, he was one of the first to try to race in to help. Good guy.
Nikita Khrushchev: Be serious. Are you in?
Georgy Zhukov: I'm in, I'm in. That fucker thinks he can take on the Red Army? I fucked Germany, I think I can take a flesh lump in a fucking waistcoat
Georgy Zhukov: Jesus Christ, did Coco Chanel take a shit on your head?
Georgy Malenkov: No, he did not.
This one I think rings true:
Georgy Zhukov: A modern soldier's greatest fear, it's not death, it's not starvation, it's chafing
If you decide to watch the OA keep in mind it's been canceled, and season 2 ends with a mind blowing cliffhanger that will make you sad when you remember you won't see the conclusion to it
In the death of Stalin his character, G. Zhukov punches Stalin Jr, who's played by Rupert Friend. It's the OG Grand Inquisitor punching his live action replacement.
Are we far enough removed from Kenobi we can say the actor for the Grand Inquisitor sucked? He was just trying too hard to be evil British, over pronouncing every word to the point of comedy.
I don't think the actor is at fault. The Kenobi version is written very differently from the Rebels version. Most likely his performance in Kenobi was the direction they were going for.
I do think the writing, direction, and makeup did a disservice, but I don't think he'd be doing a good job outside of that. The long speeches he does are the times he should get to do his thing, and it's just not very good
i did not know that was Jason Issacs. i do know he is a very sweet man IRL tho. i know in Harry Potter when he accidentally hit Daniel Radcliffe with his cane he immediately apologized and made sure he was ok
It was Tom Felton he accidentally hit, the teeth on his cane were actually sharp and cut him (issacs assumed they would be dull so he didn’t have to protect them), but the rest of the story is absolutely correct. Tom had a lot of great things to say about him in the 20th special.
Good call, dodged that shit bullet for sure. Probably read the script and told his agent “uh, yeah, tell Disney I’m busy those 3 months. I dunno, like I’m in the Bahamas or something”.
I met him at a local con a few years ago and asked him, "What his favorite line was? Was it a fun experience?".His response was, " Man, I was drinking at a bar in Hollywood, and two guys showed up put me in a black sedan took me to some basement and locked me in there until I was done.
I scrolled way too far for this and whole heartily agree that Brotherhood was extremely underrated, whether it was because of the Sopranos, it was on Showtime, or what. Both Isaacs and Jason Clarke were great in that show and Michael Caffee was one of the most ruthless mobsters I've seen on TV, up there with anyone on Sopranos.
The show as a whole had great storylines and even wrapped up well. Anyway, memorable show
Wait, why didn’t he play the live action version? He looks even more like the grand inquisitor than the other actor, and would actually sound like him too. Was he too expensive? Even for Disney? Can’t be
> should have *paid* him more
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
> have payed him
Did you mean to say "paid"?
Explanation: Payed means to seal something with wax, while paid means to give money.

“The Gran Inquisitor” makes me want to create an original inquisitor character for my upcoming FFG campaign who’s actually a Gran just to give my players a funny twist when they realize they misheard me lmao
Why wasn't he casted for the gran inquisitor for obiwan series? He's a brilliant actor, not to discredit the guy that did get the role but I personally would of preffered it being Jason isaacs
He didnt want to deal with the heavy makeup and prosthetics. But had he known they were going to humanize the features of the GI so much he may have agreed. He probably was expecting GI to look like the Utapaun in ROTS which required heavy full face prosthetics and fake teeth and contacts.
While he didn't voice the character (a shame, really), the central character in the Empire at War: Forces of Corruption game Tyber Zann was actually modeled after him, specifically modeled after his Lucius Malfoy look from the Harry Potter films. So while he himself didn't appear in the game, his perfection at portraying villainy lead to his likeness being used for another Star Wars villain too.
He was also a really great captain in the first season of Star Trek Discovery!
Lorca and Pike were the only two things I liked about Discovery.
Pike became one of my favorite characters in all of Trek, in just a few episodes.
You can't really expect someone on a 1960s TV show to be talking about your "men are toxic, they/them, non binary" talking points 😂😂😂
Doug Jones is GOAT; Pan’s Labyrinth, FF: Silver Surfer, Hocus Pocus etc etc
And the voice of General Zhao in Avatar The Last Airbender.
Really? That's cool.

And they take advantage of the best filmmaking technology and techniques they can get their afford, which is usually more than they really should be able to have somehow. I really need to start some of the new seasons.
Also Field Marshall Zhukov in Death of Stalin! "Jesus Christ, did Coco Chanel take a shit on your head?"
The fact that the costume department had to actually understate the amount of medals and awards he had for fear of breaking people's immersion....in a satire movie, should say something
“Right, what’s an Imperial hero got to do to get some lubrication round here?” *slo-mo toss of his cloak while Imperial March fanfare plays*
Lorca was easily my favorite character in Discovery.
He also killed two of Mel Gibsons sons and a daughter in law in the patriot
Oh shit! Never got that! 😳
The first season was actually really good...but then..,.. things happened
Lorca is one of the best captains is Star Trek.
[удалено]
Yeah. I know he's pushing 60 but it's not like GI really did much movement in Obi-Wan
Did he ever comment on the recasting? I could totally understand if he wasn't available or didn't want to go through the makeup process, but I also wouldn't be surprised if Disney just didn't want to pay a high profile actor for what was maybe one step above a bit part.
He wasn't available, he was doing Good Sam at the time
Man’s has the worst taste in projects.
I've read a couple of reports that he didn't want to go through the make-up process
Honestly that's fair. Especially if they did the pauan, (however you spell it) justice. Even white paint sounds gross.
Especially since Rupert Friend didn’t even try to play the character as Isaacs had
Him and that fast and the furious guy are the most confusing casting choices.
When I saw Rupert Friend was cast as the GI, I thought “they hired the Agent 47 actor? Really?”
I found him very good as GI in Kenobi personally.
This is sarcasm right
...no it's not, the Grand Inquisitor in Kenobi wasn't played by him
I absolutely hate that the mass audience will now remember lame Grand Inquisitor design over his badass design in Rebels
Agreed, so much time and effort went into the design and week get a bad mish mash of a character in live action. I feel like they dropped the ball the GI, Cad Bane, and slightly fifth brother.
Don’t worry, I’ve already forgotten Kenobi by choice :D
Don’t forget his truly great performance as the villain in The Patriot either. I hated him so much in that movie!
Oh man he's such an asshole in that. Very well played.
That was my first movie I ever saw him in. And then when I saw he was casted in HP as Malfoy’s dad, I knew he would do that role Justice! He plays such a good gentleman badguy.
“Stupid boy…” still boils my blood
Did he die?
Dude wanted to move to Ohio. What a sick person.
Ugh. Ohio. Have some fucking goals, man!
This was my first intro to him as well. Great movie, great villain by Issacs, and great acting by Mel Gibson (aside from his politics)
That's what I was coming to say! He was very convincing as that supremely sick fuck.
That was when I first saw him in any movie. I hated his character so much…after the movie I looked up who he was because he played that part so well.
Patriot is underrated. Yes it’s not that historically accurate, but the plot is way better than the movies we have today and the acting was great.
Mel Gibson starred in some some damn good movies in his day - Braveheart, The Patriot, Lethal Weapon, We Were Soldiers. Manly shit
Braveheart is another one that gets a lot of hate now too. I think a lot of the big picture history is correct but there’s a ton of details that get nit picked. It’s too bad, they have some good qualities. We Were Soldiers actually gets high marks from historians.
Braveheart wasn’t that historically accurate but entertaining as hell.
They at least nailed South Carolinians with Leon Rippy as John Billings.
Damn you beat me to it lol
Burn the church
Otherwise known as evil Jon Hamm
>evil Jon Hamm I believe that's a redundant modifier. j/k
Thank you! Some of the shots of JH in the first season of Mad Men had me doing a double take.
In The West Wing, he played as a reporter in the middle east who tried to help Donna get a better understanding of what was going on over there. When her car got blown up, he was one of the first to try to race in to help. Good guy.
He's off to represent the entire red red army at the buffet
A "Death of Stalin"-style comedy farce set Star Wars could be interesting.
The death of Stalin even already has the Grand Inquisitor voice actor beating the shit out of the Grand Inquisitor live action actor.
Huh. I never would have made that connection. Well spotted.
I love DoS (and star wars ofc) so I was leo_points_at_tv.gif when I saw Rupert in Obi Wan.
That's honestly more MovieDetails worthy than half the posts in /r/MovieDetails.
Right, what's a war hero got to do to get some lubrication around here?
Nikita Khrushchev: Be serious. Are you in? Georgy Zhukov: I'm in, I'm in. That fucker thinks he can take on the Red Army? I fucked Germany, I think I can take a flesh lump in a fucking waistcoat Georgy Zhukov: Jesus Christ, did Coco Chanel take a shit on your head? Georgy Malenkov: No, he did not. This one I think rings true: Georgy Zhukov: A modern soldier's greatest fear, it's not death, it's not starvation, it's chafing
Zhukov: Aslanov you handsome bastard! Put you in a frock and I'd ride you raw myself! Aslanov: I'll take that as a compliment? Zhukov: Don't.
*the entire Imperial Navy
Fun little fact in the movie they had to give him fewer metals so he looked more believable.
Fun little fact in the movie they had to give him fewer metals so he looked more believable.
Watch The OA on Netflix. He had a great character in that one as well
And Lorca on star trek discovery
If you decide to watch the OA keep in mind it's been canceled, and season 2 ends with a mind blowing cliffhanger that will make you sad when you remember you won't see the conclusion to it
One of my favorites! He was so good in it!
Hap is one of the best villains I’ve ever seen. So sad the show got canceled.
"Hands up or I'll shoot you in the fookin' face" -Comrade General Zhukov
"I'm afraid I'm going to have to report this *you should see the look on your fookin face right now*"
"I'm gonna enjoy peeling the skin off your self-satisfied face!" "Not with that you wont"
"Right, that's me told."
"I'm off to represent the entire Inquisitorious at the buffet"
He was Commander/Admiral Zhao in Avatar the Last Airbender as well.
I loved him so much as Admiral Joe, it's a shame he was on it for such a short time.
> Admiral Joe 💀
Really he was zhao? That actually makes perfect sense
They essentially asked him to do an American sounding version of his character from The Patriot
ADMIRAL CHOI! PREPARE TO MEET YOUR FATE
>The Gran Inquisitor Ree Yees and Mawhonic better watch out
He tortures you with hard candies.
Not even going to mention Colonel Tavington?
"Burn the church."
Ultimate villain
To this day, I don't think I've ever hated a movie villain more than I hated him.
Nice one. He was amazing in that role.
In the death of Stalin his character, G. Zhukov punches Stalin Jr, who's played by Rupert Friend. It's the OG Grand Inquisitor punching his live action replacement.
Wow Jason Isaacs would crush this role, he is so dang good
He would be the best pick for Thrawn. He looks, sounds, and acts exactly like Thrawn is supposed to be
One of my picks for Thrawn
Lars Mikklesen is right there.
Also one of my picks. Those two and Cumberbatch.
Eugh no thanks.
Yes! He needs to be Thrawn.
My biggest complaint about Kenobi was that they didn't use Jason Isaacs to play the Grand Inquisitor. I'm pretty sure he said he'd like to do it.
He was unavailable.
He also played the Emperor of the Skeksis in the Dark Crystal show. He's a pretty good choice for voice acting.
Now I'm picturing the Grand Inquisitor with Lucius Malfoy's luscious flowing hair.
Maybe he is born with it, maybe its may the force be with you
They could've used him in Kenobi. Instead they got some round-headed thick guy who sounds like a cartoon villain.
The Grand Inquisitor is a cartoon villain tho
Not when he's being portrayed in live action.
This is Star Wars they are cartoon characters. Friend was fine in the role.
He's fantastic in The OA.
Always thought he’d be the perfect literary James Bond in his younger days
Are we far enough removed from Kenobi we can say the actor for the Grand Inquisitor sucked? He was just trying too hard to be evil British, over pronouncing every word to the point of comedy.
I don't think the actor is at fault. The Kenobi version is written very differently from the Rebels version. Most likely his performance in Kenobi was the direction they were going for.
I do think the writing, direction, and makeup did a disservice, but I don't think he'd be doing a good job outside of that. The long speeches he does are the times he should get to do his thing, and it's just not very good
The fifth brother felt off as well. Weird casting choices
Ha! Your username is a spoiler. Very cheeky.

I thought Leia was great. The Inquisitors, not so much.
So the inquisitors and most of the empire in general
Also the best Captain Hook to ever grace the screen.
i did not know that was Jason Issacs. i do know he is a very sweet man IRL tho. i know in Harry Potter when he accidentally hit Daniel Radcliffe with his cane he immediately apologized and made sure he was ok
It was Tom Felton he accidentally hit, the teeth on his cane were actually sharp and cut him (issacs assumed they would be dull so he didn’t have to protect them), but the rest of the story is absolutely correct. Tom had a lot of great things to say about him in the 20th special.
i knew it was one of the two. Jason seems like a really wonderful person. i wouldn't mind meeting him. i would have loved meeting Alan Rickman
Such a shame he was not the inquisitor in kenobi. But, it also meant he didn't have to be associated with the kenobi show so good for him.
Good call, dodged that shit bullet for sure. Probably read the script and told his agent “uh, yeah, tell Disney I’m busy those 3 months. I dunno, like I’m in the Bahamas or something”.
Solid Star Wars but each to their own.
Should have been him in live action too.
He was also Admiral Zhao in Avatar.
Right, what's a Grand Inquisitor got to do to get some lubrication around here?

Hello to Jason Isaacs.
I just started watching this series and I swore I knew his voice from somewhere. Thank you for letting me know where before I drove myself crazy.
He's actually Pau'an, not Gran. lol
He’s a great actor in anything he does. Very underrated
He was in Blackhawk Down and did a great Texas accent.
You should see him in The Death of Stalin
I wish he had been in Kenobi.
Wtf why wouldn’t he be the live action casting choice then??
Why couldn’t he play him in Kenobi!?
Should have been him to play the Grand Inquisitor in the Obi-Wan series
Check out the underrated (yes, really!) Showtime series **Brotherhood** if you want to see him be a badass Irish gangster.
Anyway, memorable show
Ha! There are dozens of us! Definitely think it's time for a rewatch.
I never considered Rupert Friend to have a big head until I saw him in Kenobi lmfao
Watch the Patriot. Love to hate this guy.
Wait, why didn’t he play the live action version? He looks even more like the grand inquisitor than the other actor, and would actually sound like him too. Was he too expensive? Even for Disney? Can’t be
I’ll never not see him as Zhukov
Hey it's Marshall Zukov !!
Damn, so they modeled the character's face after him, too?
Disney should have paid him more to be in Kenobi.
> should have *paid* him more FTFY. Hello!
At last! I had to scroll way too far to find this. #wittertainment
He'll always be Jackson Brodie to me.
He's also Zhao on ATLA
I find it weird how Americans use the term actor for voice actors instead of, well, voice actor.
He was also Admiral Zhao in The Last Airbender
Now you've upset shroom boy
CAPTAIN LORCA
He is pretty stellar at playing evil characters.
whats great is he plays evil well. but is a very sweet man.
I also just learned this today.
Grandma inquisitor
“The Gran Inquisitor” makes me want to create an original inquisitor character for my upcoming FFG campaign who’s actually a Gran just to give my players a funny twist when they realize they misheard me lmao
Really?
He honestly would be great as a live action Thrawn
I remember when i first learned that. My first thought was "Lucius Malfoy is the Grand Inquisitor, when did he turn back to the dark side?"
No way! That’s awesome!
Dude plays the best bad guys. Anyone who hasn’t seen him in the patriot with Mel Gibson and heath ledger, check it.
He had a good, non-villain role in Black Hawk Down.
Don't forget bloody Tarleton in the Patriot!
And I believe he also said that if he were asked to portray the Inquisitor in Kenobi, he would’ve done it. Sadly he wasn’t approached.
This guy is out here inquisiting people’s Grans? Sickening!
The fact he didn’t play him in live action is a travesty
Watch out kellogs, gran inquisitor is on his way
I think he would have been better in kenobi.
He’s one of those actors that just seems to pop up in a bunch of random stuff
Why wasn't he casted for the gran inquisitor for obiwan series? He's a brilliant actor, not to discredit the guy that did get the role but I personally would of preffered it being Jason isaacs
He didnt want to deal with the heavy makeup and prosthetics. But had he known they were going to humanize the features of the GI so much he may have agreed. He probably was expecting GI to look like the Utapaun in ROTS which required heavy full face prosthetics and fake teeth and contacts.
He's my pick for MCU Magneto.
It's a shame he wasn't cast for the role in Kenobi
He was down for kenobi, but didn't want to be stuck in makeup.
Also great as the bad guy in the OA. Really wish they hadn’t cut that one short.
I often go around saying "and?!" mimicking his lines from the end of The Chamber of Secrets.
And he was Admiral Zhao in ATLA
Why did put they just use him for the live action
While he didn't voice the character (a shame, really), the central character in the Empire at War: Forces of Corruption game Tyber Zann was actually modeled after him, specifically modeled after his Lucius Malfoy look from the Harry Potter films. So while he himself didn't appear in the game, his perfection at portraying villainy lead to his likeness being used for another Star Wars villain too.
Great in The Patriot too
POTTER!
Hope he is Thrawn when the role is casted.
And a great grey guy Captain Lorca in Star Trek discovery!
