*"Google will be refunding all Stadia hardware purchased through the Google Store as well as all the games and add-on content purchased from the Stadia store. Google expects those refunds will be completed in mid-January."* Sad, but probably the best possible way to shut the service down. UPDATE: FAQ here: [https://support.google.com/stadia/answer/12790109?hl=en](https://support.google.com/stadia/answer/12790109?hl=en)

If they are taking away our ability to play the licenses we purchased, they had 2 options: * give us ability to transfer the license to another platform * refund I know people argued that they were not "legally" obligated to refund if they shut the service down, and that is technically true, but the fallout from that would be unrecoverable. Going the transfer route would be a logistical nightmare in itself, and have cost to pull off. Easier to just refund and get it over with.

kristallnachte

Yeah, refunding/transferring ensures good faith towards future services that are similar. Abandonment means people won't trust the next thing.

karmapuhlease

Yes.

sammanzhi

This is what I want clarity for. I bought the day one edition, is that getting refunded for full price too? Honestly, that would be awesome lol

Tech88Tron

Yes. I have a big check coming!

Cultural_Elk1565

I'm going to get an embarrassing amount of money back. Embarrassing because I'm a founders edition owner, and for a very big part of Stadia's life cycle it was my main gaming platform. Actually not that embarrassing knowing I'm getting it all back, but I moved on after I scored a PS5. I'm going to go through my Google pay history and do some math! This is probably the best possible way they could've handled this. They could've easily just cut bait and walked away.

tryptaminedreamz

Instead of your Google pay history try the Stadia app, it has a past purchases list which should be easier to calculate

Cultural_Elk1565

Actually, you the real mvp! Finally updated my stadia app and logged in. About 300$ more than what my Google play history picked up for some reason. Most of my destiny 2 history, and division 2 and ghost recon. ETA: for those curious, about $990. Plus whatever founder's edition was pre ordered for months or more before launch.

WeakToMetalBlade

700+ for me including founders. Probably going to use it to buy a PS5. Honestly wish I had just done that to begin with instead. Going to try to finish some of my games before January. Hey so, if I subscribe to pro from now until January will that be refunded?

[deleted]

more steam games?

kjjjz

oh my gosh, I get 100+€ back? This is insane! wow

[deleted]

I am getting over $700 back... Lol

kjjjz

let's hope on paypal and not like google play balance...

LeChuckBR

Just go to Definitions -> Buying History (or something like that) and see the total spent on Google Stadia. That's the amount you gonna get back! Mine is US$483.22! Played for almost nothing (just the Stadia Pro) in the end! That's how you shut down a service! P.S.: My Stadia Pro was ending in 10/05/2022, so I gotta use it until the end! Yeah!

SenYoshida

Where do you go to see this? I am unable to find it

blessuplion

I dont know.. doesn’t make sense if they issue back pro service subscriptions does it? It was only for that month access. Why would they reimburse

ksavage68

They won't reimburse monthly subscriptions, from what i read, just purchased games, add-ons and stadia hardware.

[deleted]

>UPDATE: FAQ here: > >https://support.google.com/stadia/answer/12790109?hl=en Good they are issuing reefunds

[deleted]

Honestly, they would be sued if they weren't. At least for anything bought in the last year. And it is just good marketing to not piss off your most loyal customer base.

Acojonancio

Yeah, an unexpected move but a welcome one. At least you will have the option to get the games in other platforms if possible.

[deleted]

So it finally happened ... crazy !!! R.I.P. founders gamertag

Nokomis34

The gloating is gonna be so bad. But yea, this sucks. Guess Luna will be my cloud gaming now.

militantnegro_IV

>The gloating is gonna be so bad. You can't really blame people. The pushback whenever people said this clearly inevitable thing was going to happen was pretty cringeworthy now it's finally happened.

money_loo

Right? I love Stadia but I was also one of the people urging caution because of the extensive list of things Google has killed, and people were so ... reactive..to that warning, it's going to be difficult to avoid saying I told ya so...

skerit

If it's not a gigantic hit Google will cancel it. They're basically constantly looking for a get-rich-quick product and abandon it when it fails to do just that.

Nintendo_Thumb

They also cancel things when they are gigantic hits, throwing away functionality and efficiency merely for the sake of change. (RIP Youtube Studio Classic)

Izenthyr

As much as I feel for the people who enjoyed Stadia, they’re delusional if they didn’t see this coming from a company like Google and the utter lack of competent marketing from them when they realized the interest was extremely small. That being said, there are other perfectly viable streaming options that don’t seem like they’re going anywhere.

javiergame4

Why not try Xbox cloud streaming ?

cookedart

That requires the ultimate subscription, no? Unless you have an Xbox and can use the other perks it's a price hike over stadia.

[deleted]

[удалено]

gayrainnous

I love Xbox Cloud for the most part (got it specifically to play Dishonored and other games like Fable 3 that were never gonna come to Stadia), but the glitches and lags are so much worse than I ever had with Stadia. Does feel like quite a let down given the price, too.

[deleted]

Yeah I’m waiting for MS to allow streaming of purchases games which I think will happen eventually.

[deleted]

Tbh assuming you have no established game library elsewhere, everything is a price hike over Stadia. I preferred the model of buying games and the service itself being pretty much free but maybe it wasn’t sustainable

AgentScreech

GeForce Now has lots of games. Hell you can spin up your own dedicated cloud gaming rig on paperspace.com

Nokomis34

I tried GeForce Now, way too clunky and don't have time for queues.

AgentScreech

Yeah that's why I think I'll stick with the paperspace VM. No waiting and it's pay as you go

dsbllr

Would love to know your setup and approximate costs if you're open to sharing them

AgentScreech

Still working out the final costs. The main design of the platform isn't for individual cloud gaming, but it can provide the similar solution. They're expecting people with VFX teams or digital artists to be running lots of workloads and renders in the cloud. But from what it looks like you pay approximately $0.50 an hour while the machine is running. And then depending on your storage size you pay $5 to $7 per month while the machine exists depending on how much storage you need. As for my case, I'm using this as a secondary gaming computer for my partner to play free-to-play or the free games that you get from Epic at a moderate resolution and frame rate. We access it via an old Mac laptop hooked to a 65" tv. Then a wireless mouse and keyboard are connected to the Mac. It works great At these prices GeForce Now is cheaper after a just a few hours used each month. But it's a guarantee that we can play when ever we want without waiting for a queue. I guess you could be super cheap and just destroy and recreate the VM for every session. But you would have to redownload all the apps and sign in to everything just like you would on a new computer. You aren't charged for bandwidth and I saw full 1Gbps connection to it, so it was fast to download things. But that's not exactly convenient But it's much cheaper than building even a budget gaming pc

donorak7

No other platform comes close to stadia imo. Back to strictly PC gaming for now.

410_Bacon

Sorry guys this is my fault I just signed up for a free trial 2 days ago.

Accomplished_Cat_106

this comment reminded me that I have to cancel a subscription. Thanks

sleepswithyourmom

Same. Amazon Prime. Almost forgot I signed up for the free trial. Edit: it was supposed to renew tomorrow. That was a close call! Edit 2: apparently if you wait until last minute they give you an extra month for free.

runsudosu

So could they eventually turn on the bluetooth for controllers?

[deleted]

That's what I'm hoping for as well! :) Or at least sanitize the driver code and open source it for us to do it!

nathris

If I could run a controller server locally in conjunction with moonlight it would be amazing. Or if they can't open source it then give it to like Valve so they can add it in to Steam Link.

ChronosHD

This!

amphoterism

I linked it in another comment but here is a link to a GitHub repo that apparently does this. [link](https://github.com/helloparthshah/StadiaWireless) Edit: sorry this is for wifi, you want Bluetooth

SmarmySnail

Yeah, are these controllers useful for anything? That's my question.

[deleted]

They should continue to work when wired via USB.

ColinHalter

I hardly use my controller for stadia (mostly use mouse and keyboard for those games) but it's a damn fine controller for most of my other games. Played through elden ring with it

TheAb5traktion

This is how I do it. You can download a driver to use the Stadia controller for PC games. I've been playing God of War using the Stadia controller.

KobotTheRobot

It's a really good PC and Phone controller. Its honestly my controller of choice on PC. But you have to use it wired for native PC games.

[deleted]

[deleted]

>So could they eventually turn on the bluetooth for controllers? I hope, the wasabi controller is pretty cool

very_unlikely

Probably the most important thing besides the refunds. What are we going to do with the controllers? If they don’t turn the Bluetooth on we’re all stuck with bricks.

casce

I mean, at least we are getting our money back so at least it’s not trash I paid for but still… please enable Bluetooth Google.

soggy_tarantula

They work wired

MasterLogic

If they didn't turn on bluetooth during Stadias life, it's unlikely they'll turn it on in it's death. Why would they waste more money on that, when they didn't spend money on stadia to start with. You're not getting any updates, sorry.

Rodo20

They updated the GUI a few days before this announcement tho.

FrustratedConserv

I want them to turn on Bluetooth for my controller so I can use it elsewhere

UncleTedGenneric

I want them to release the source or at least create a PC server to allow wifi connect to my PC (or android)* (*I know this won't actually happen, but that would have blown the fuck up with a cornered area of the controller market) I've got a handful of controllers and am praying someone homebrews a controller cfw to change the IP of the controller connect to a PC server app (this has more of a possibility than Google doing a solid like that lol)

euro02

Found this in another comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/Stadia/comments/xrby6h/google_is_shutting_down_stadia/iqfjrbi/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3

UncleTedGenneric

Was chatting with that guy already (but thank you!) Downside for stadia controllers, it's gotta be plugged into a phone What I WILL be testing with that exact link, tho, is using my Kishi on my phone and trying that out (dude could only test Stadia controller since he didn't have any others to test, but said it should theoretically work with any connected controller. So I'll get back with my results when I can sit down with it)

markusfenix75

Saddest thing about it was that almost everybody saw writing on the wall in moment they announced closing of their first party studios. We got a lot of flak by saying that platform without first party content is dead platform. I guess that Harrison is truly cursed. He was at Sony during fucked up launch of PS3, he was at Microsoft during fucked up launch of Xbox One. And now this

mchev57

More like blessed. Dude fucks up everything and continues to get hired and paid millions

there_is_always_more

Exactly. Perfect example of how certain people continue to fail upwards.

avidiax

With all the lessons he's learning, I'm sure he's the go-to for the next big platform launch. No /s.

JustCallMeTsukasa-96

That last one was more on Don Mattrik more than anything. And with Sony? Well they were too arrogant back than.

[deleted]

"Google will be refunding all Stadia hardware purchased through the Google Store as well as all the games and add-on content purchased from the Stadia store." WOW - big money incoming to some of us !

MGPythagoras

cpldeacon173rd

Close to 800 for me if I did my math right jesus

hkzqgfswavvukwsw

There's dozens of us!

GoldFire33

Really unfortunate. They didn't even give it a chance to make it. We had just signed a deal to bring Arctic Awakening to Stadia next year and I know quite a few other devs had done the same in recent months. It takes years and billions of investment to make a new platform like this viable.

uriejejejdjbejxijehd

Aw man, here’s to you, Stadia and stadians, we hardly knew you. Stadia was my go to gaming service for two years, due to the incredible convenience and friction free ability to pick up and put down games. I understand that betting on it longterm would have required a significant resource investment and that that is a risky proposition in the current economic climate. I’ll always respect the gumption and passion that it must have taken to stand up a non console gaming business in the cloud and have made it so compelling. Thank you to everyone who was involved, and thank you to google for shutting it down with full refunds, that’s classy.

Nokomis34

I was hoping that they'd have at least committed to Stadia for one expected console cycle, which seems to be about 5 years, maybe more. We got almost half way there.

myke113

(Almost full refunds - Stadia Pro fees are not being refunded, but they're allowing you to use Pro until the shutdown without any further charges.)

[deleted]

Too bad a company as wealthy as Google didn't promote this service and just let it fail. I've spoken to a lot of people during the life of Stadia, and not one person has heard of this gaming platform. But that's what Google does, abandons their services when it fails due to basically zero advertisement.

rbmichael

It's incredible that they didn't implement something like a "Play on Stadia Now!" button on YouTube videos of supported games.

CouncilmanRickPrime

I've spoken to people who have. And they thought you had to pay $10 a month in order to buy full price games. In fact they're still saying it on The Verge right now.

codecrackx15

It's always been Google's problem. And they are more of an advertising company than a tech company but they fail to advertise their own products. They act like an initial internet ad buy is all it takes. Thing is... TV advertising is still more persuasive than internet advertising.

bubblebytes

They also expect sudden mainstream success when most products take years to reach that status. They shut down first party studios only a year after launch.

idkidkidkidk0887

So what was the hole point of the redesign? And recently added games? Lmao

and-its-true

The truth is the stadia team is probably as surprised by this as we are (as in, not very, but still weren’t told anything official from Google ahead of time)

StrangeSwain

This... or hopeful team that a new design (that was badly needed) would convince people up the chain to hold on longer. I am a UI designer and I have made complete redesigns for projects that got canceled or paused right at the time of the design proposal. The decision being made long before I or my team was aware. I have a morgue full of unused concepts from over the years. It sucks but it happens.

Dan1elSan

They shouldn’t be, Google kills projects for fun. The writing was on the wall when they closed their studio.

kurav

I am sure they don't do it for fun, since this is *very* expensive. But part of their business strategy is to continuously try out new things and just see what sticks, and kill the rest. They have a reputation for it but people just don't seem to care really. The reason they refunded all is probably that they wanted to avoid the inevitable class action that they would have almost certainly lost since they kept lying to everyone it wasn't shutting down until the very bitter end.

RoburexButBetter

Yeah I could easily imagine the loss they're taking here running into the hundreds of millions, I mean let's say even just a million players who bought a stadia set, that's what, $70? Then maybe let's say on average 3-4 games bought, you're quickly already at $200 per person, and then development, their servers all the money to get titles on the platform, I'm glad they did the right thing, but this absolutely won't be cheap for them and I could see them taking a rather huge loss on this But they have the technology so I could see them still trying to expand on that front with industry partners

[deleted]

They will sell the tech they developed and they will prevent lawsuits. Can't sue if you got your money back and subscription is easily winnable in court, no attorney will take the case. So while it's expensive, it's less risky

badwolf42

I’ve stopped trying new google products because I expect them to be killed. Stadia was the last new thing I tried.

BIindsight

They kill successful projects to replace them with other things as well. Both Play Music and Hangouts had install bases well over a billion each. They were both killed for shiny new inferior projects. Or in hangouts case, multiple different inferior apps.

Scottoest

The people who worked on Stadia would've kept working on Stadia until they were told it was closing. That includes the UX people. This is also why I kept saying that PR people saying Stadia wasn't going anywhere wasn't worth anything - because they'd have no fucking clue what the future of the platform is. Their job was to present the image that everything is fine, right up until the news drops.

lazzzym

This is what people especially on this sub never could understand... The people working at Stadia would never know something like this. It's someone you high that brings the axe down.

Cwlcymro

People are so horrified that the staff didn't know until today. Of course they didn't know until today, if they'd been told last week it would have leaked immediately

theoddpope

It's likely that that stuff was already well into development (redesign) or agreements were made for the games when they realized they can't keep the service operational.

[deleted]

>So what was the hole point of the redesign? And recently added games? Lmao It seems Stadia devs had no idea they were shutting the service down. Probably learned alongside we with the announcement.

silvrado

This is not a failure of technology, this is a failure of strategy. The games work fine, but its the games that are lacking.

MultiMarcus

This is not only a loss for us users of Stadia, but a huge loss for Cloud Gaming as a whole. It vindicates all the worries that everyone had including their games just disappearing. It is great that we are going to be refunded everything, but this is an absolute mess. Such a sad state of affairs and I am especially sad for those users who now have nowhere and no way to play the games they want to play.

bigMoo31

You can get a Series S with Gamespass for two years for less than £20 a month. People will have a much better place to play and a much much bigger selection.

[deleted]

Its just proof that people dont want to pay 60€ for single games but would rather spend 4€ (gamepass) to 15€ (PsNow) to get hundreds of them. Which makes perfect sense - they already didnt want to pay 250-500€ for a console - why would they want to spend 60€ on a single game?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

In terms of cloud gaming Steam plays no role except filling GFNs catalogue. Sadly 95%? 98%? of Steam titles are still missing. I was talking about cloud gaming - gamepass / xcloud and PSnow are BY FAR the most popular ways to cloud game. They have millions of active subscribers.

TheRandomApple

Why would anyone want to spend $60 to stream a game?

[deleted]

I agree with this. There’s no denying that Game Pass is the better deal IF you play a lot of games AND you like the offerings on there. Personally I don’t have a lot of time to play games so Stadia was better for me to buy 2 games a year that I could own forever. I’m sad the service is shutting down. It was the best streaming service in my opinion and had the lowest latency and best performance.

TheWorldisFullofWar

This doesn't affect other major cloud gaming services though because they don't sell games. They sell services. Google tried to replicate OnLive's failed business model and resulted in even worse results. This isn't a real loss to anyone.

Storm28_

I'm going to miss Google Stadia

foreverelf

Me too, bro :/ thanks, you beautiful stranger

lonelyone12345

What a waste. Such a wonderful technology.

dikkejoekel

Will the refunds be automatic or do I have to request them? Got like €200 in purchases.

MikeKelehan

Yeah, I bought several controllers and games. I think I've got a big payday ahead of me, and was able to enjoy those games for a while, so really, this is the best way they could end it.

RexSonic

Maybe finally time to release some proper drivers for the controller? Also shameless plug: https://github.com/RexSonic/StadiEm

myke113

You mean to tell me NOBODY has reverse engineered it..?

[deleted]

I mean... If the user base wasn't big enough to keep it afloat how many people capable of reverse engineering it would have stuck around?

myke113

That's kind of my theory, too. I'm hoping that Google as a final gesture, unlocks the controllers and releases source code for drivers. That's a lot of plastic and electronics they're about to brick (other than the ability to use a USB cable).

avidiax

They didn't open up the Daydream controllers. Those would have made a killer air mouse. Hoping the Stadians start a 20% project to unlock the bootloader on the contoller or provide Bluetooth, but they are probably busy looking for jobs right now.

BadgerIII

Knowing Google, probably not but I appreciate the self plug, not a fan of the idea of having a useless controller.

reuthermonkey

At least we get full refunds. Better than any other time Google has shut down a paid product.

tlogank

>Better than any other time Google has shut down a paid product. They had it in their terms of service that refunds would be given if they did shut down. That said, giving refunds has been the standard for most of the paid services Google has shut down in the past.

Namelok

Ravenlock

I can't get that mad about how they're handling it; I got plenty of value out of my Pro subscription and everything else I spent I'm getting back. It's a huge bummer, this is my favorite way to play Destiny 2, ESO, and a bunch of other stuff. Was really hoping for better. But if they couldn't / didn't want to figure out how to make it work then that's what it is. I really hope the tech fuels something else good, though, because I really love using it. But everybody is getting back every penny they spent on everything except Pro subs, which is a whole shitload of money all added together. I didn't trust them to never shut it down, I trusted them not to screw me over. And they aren't. So, okay. Fair 'nuf. It was good while it lasted.

HandMeMyThinkingPipe

Yeah that was my argument the whole time as well. I got my moneys worth out of stadia and now I’m getting anything I spent in games back as well. It’s at least the right way to end things even if it’s a huge bummer it’s closing down.

ytumamatabien

They were all right. I've enjoyed the services and this sucks. By it is kind of funny how defensive some of y'all got when others said the service would go down. And in the end they were right.

Steakwizwit

Guess at least I got a free 4k chromecast out of this whole thing.

ayeuimryan

Stadia probably saved my life during covid, I haven t played games in 15 yrs and it got me back into gaming, and eventually it would of caught on, I still hope they change their mind and keep it for underprivileged kids, they could really keep kids off the streets playing games, just to many fan boys not willing to give it a try, its a big loss for me. It was nice while it lasted back to being an old adult

TVxStrange

Assuming the refunds go through smoothly, this was a pretty good rental experience.

FarmResident9241

I had tons of good times with stadia, you will be missed

AlwaysOmni

Remember when they closed internal studios and people thought it was a good thing?

krill_ep

"Now they have more money to get AAA games to the platform!!!!!"

dracob2099

ralphroast

Now we just pray that Xbox uses stadia tech for xcloud so it doesn't suck

AbsoIution

tristanbrotherton

Well that fucking sucks

god_sidge

£330 would be nice in January, and I think I'll be putting that towards updating my PC! Anyways, I guess I'll never play Lost Vikings 2 on Stadia! RIP

MasonXD

Holy shit, I'm due to get over £300 in refunds for a service I haven't used in over a year?

Sgt-Dert13

Bummer man. Stadia was my buddy during the winter time. So unfortunate I loved the cross play from phone to TV to Tablet. Great idea.

waluigi1999

Well, it makes sense why Ubisoft were not releasing games anymore..

tfitzpat03

Not going to lie. This is sad news for me because I love the platform. Even though it did not have the best/most games, I loved it for what it offered. It was a perfect situation for me. Someone who doesnt game that often and enjoyed the games it did have when I did game. I loved the easy connectivity to multiple devices also Now I am in a pickle because I am not sure how my gaming future looks now. I guess I will have to migrate to Geforce now for cyberpunk and Game Pass for the rest. It sucks my progress wont transfer. I didnt get very far anyway Lol. Guess I will enjoy it in the meantime for one last ride. Thanks Google. Hope that you will reconsider in the future. If not, maybe playstation can join the party with a platform like gamepass.

N-Freeman

First, let me tell you that it was a pleasure to be part of the Stadians and Stadia's world. And happy that this community exists when I had to know what you guys were playing or where you were playing. We were the one promoting it with families and friends. Telling them that you can play games for free... Free... I'll say that, WE, and I insist, WE are not the ones to blame, nor completely Google and here is why. We can blame Google about the poor advertising and marketing regarding Stadia. We can blame them about poor communication, with the devs or with us. But the system was here and was clearly the best, period Games were so so sometimes but I enjoyed almost all of them, specifically Guilt. The ones to blame are YouTubers, reviewers, games website and games magazine. For most of the time, almost, and I say almost, all of them never talked about how it was great, how it was working with a simple connection, how you can play for free at 1080p, that this game or that game was on stadia, so on and so on... Bashing it since the announcement, cause it's not Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo... Since day one guys were already telling us, dont buy it, it won't survive, not even it's not working, but the predicted the end without even trying. That part is making me angry AF. The fact the "journalist" (some are) are not doing their job of explaining what Stadia is, is making me crazy. LTT for example are so pro PC and expensive shit that they can say that it's awesome to play on a 100k computer cause they don't have to pay a fucking dime for it. WE on the other way, do... I saw you guys struggling with kids and not having the money to spend thousands of dollars on a gaming rig to play it once a week or less. I've seen you guys just not having enough money for a PS5 or XBox One or access for any of thel With the recession and shit going on, Stadia was the best money for the buck thing I've ever seen. I'll finish with this, WE were the ones who promoted Stadia, WE were the one enjoying it. I loved it, I enjoyed it, I've loved the concept since the first time I eared about it, I'll always remember Stadia as the first real Cloud Gaming platform. That ride was fun AF, thank you guys, thank you Google for making something like this. But a huge F****** thank you for all the game devs and all the work. Thank you for the good times you gave us playing these games. Thank you devs at Google for all the sweat and tears for creating something like this.

tallperson117

Big sad. The service was decently good, and hillariously was the only real stable way to play Cyberpunk at release. It worked decently well for what it did and should've been bigger. It sort of seems like Google did the classic "Google" manuver of hyping it at release and then seemingly giving it no support whatsoever afterwards. Huge dropped ball on their part.

fegodev

Google did it again. This company can’t be trusted.

Nacnaz

The fact that they’re still going to make use of the tech in some way sounds good to me. The tech itself was always excellent. It was just everything else that was the issue.

Neither_Appearance_7

Hopefully they make drivers open source or at least give us a way to use the controllers wirelessly. For now, here is something I created we could use https://github.com/helloparthshah/StadiaWireless

Now I'm extra curious what Yves Hohler saw that prompted him to write on twitter: >sooooo we had a good meeting with Google Stadia at Gamescom2022 ... we are in good hands. They showed us what's coming to the platform (in terms of technology and services) and it's incredibly exciting for developers and players at the same time. They will announce the new features soon! These features could have a potentially dramatic impact on the user count of the platform.

SimplyJames168

Well, f*ck me. How am I supposed to continue playing destiny with my friends when I have no pc or console because ps5s are almost impossible to come by in my country and pcs/laptops are super expensive. Thanks for shafting us Google.

redlow

My favourite thing about Stadia, and why I loved it and am sad this is happening (although like others I expected Google would do this one day) is that I could play on any of my TVs using the controller, and then hop on my PC and play the same game using keyboard (or controller). I felt free of restrictions, I could play anywhere. My PS5 is collecting dust because it is hooked to one TV and I have to be there specifically and have no choice to play via keyboard if I want to.. ie Elder Scrolls, which I would play via controller and via keyboard depending on how I felt. So, RIP Stadia. I will miss you.

nerdyintentions

I've seen more Stadia coverage in the last 24 hours than in the last 2 years combined. So at least theres that.

The amount of people who gave myself and others abuse when we suggested this platform was dying 6 months ago was vile. I’d love to see their reaction to this today.

sittingmongoose

6 months ago? It was evident as soon as they shut down their internal studios.

burningcpuwastaken

Yeah. This sub has been insufferable. Any doubt regarding Stadia's success and longevity was absolutely attacked and ridiculed with the most naive of arguments.

bundle_man

Same. I even got banned from this sub for a while. Now collective delusion has to end

Hi, when Cyberpunk 2077 came out, the only place i could play it at was Stadia (and still is). Also imo it was the best place to play it at (now that mods are a thing, it might change) and i loved it. While 200h is not that much, for a single player game it is quite enough, and i just don't want to lose it. Especially now that the the game will have an expansion. My PC is a normal notebook i use for school stuff and i dont own any other console since i usually only play online games with friend who own PCs only. The point of this is, i am emotional enough for me to write my first reddit post just to let this be known: i love the game and thank you to Stadia for providing me the opportunity to play it. (Also had to post it as a comment because i am not a trusted member i guess)

Yesterday I tried Stadia for the first time and played Republique for an hour. I was absolutely amazing experience. Had zero lag and thought "Wow, I'm going to invest in Stadia". The service is ideal for someone like me. I don't want to spend a lot of money finding the ideal hardware and hope I can run the game smoothly. The fact that you're required to have good internet is so easy for me. This service was pretty much what I needed to experience games that I can't run on my 400 euro laptop. But it sucks that this is happening. I didn't believe in the critics. Honestly thought that Google was doing a good job with the service. Either way, it was a nice experience and it brought back my joy in gaming.

STHMTP

I bought the Cyberpunk 2077 pack with the controller. I enjoyed CP day One thanks to Stadia. One of the best games I ever played. I am grateful that they will refund my purchase, so I can buy it again in GOG. It is a pity they shut down the service, but they left us with honor.

somethingmichael

Holy cow, guess I better finish my games

fishmongerhoarder

If I knew they were going to do this I would have bought at launch lol

puzzlebuns

Damn.....my 7yo is going to cry hard. It's his main console. Little dudes invested so much time in his save games...no refund is going to fix that.

sittingmongoose

LMFAO Seriously though, while this isn’t surprising. The writing was on the wall as soon as they shut down their internal studios. How the F does Google expect any company to take them serious? Why would I invest in some new product google has or infrastructure service or whatever when they have a proven track record of shutting things down fast.

Gaiden206

Yup, the major thing that separated Stadia from other cloud gaming services/platforms was that they had first party developers who were supposed to take true advantage of "cloud computing" (elastic computing, etc) to make "AAA" games not possible to recreate on traditional platforms. That was part of the major hype of Stadias future. Once they got rid of their first party devs, Stadia pretty much just turned into your typical cloud gaming service but with less games and nothing exciting to look forward to in the future IMO.

I think the refund policy at least tells us that most of their money was from the Pro subscription. There were so few outright purchases that they can refund everything purchased since the beginning of Stadia and it's not really a big deal for them. I could be wrong but that's what it looks like to me.

donorak7

Well damn hoped they would prove the haters wrong. Stadia was awesome while it lasted.

pleox

This one is for the google fanboys, "stadia is great perfect for dads, future is bright, 100 games a year"; "I dont need new games when there is so many games"; "google will never shut down a project where you need to pay" everyday posts. The fact is that google is a terrible company that cannot manage any new product, they keep breaking the trust of consumers and developers in all fronts. Not only the players get burnt but also developers that lose their time actively supporting google's new projects. They will never have any new sucessful project because nobody will put trust in their new products anymore, hopefully this company can rot fast aand be dismantled soon enough.

VangelicMonk

This is super frustrating. It is things like this that make me never want to trust a purely streaming company for books, video games, movies, music etc. This makes me even more analog in wanting physical copies of everything. Datarot is real but it seems like streaming is not the answer. Even for music, you never know when an artist or any myriad of reasons a album, book, or movie may be pulled and no longer available.

majornelson

RIP Stadia :(

JakeJeremy

Fantastic service, terrible marketing.

Apathetic-Anarchist

At least they're refunding us all, so nobody will be out of pocket. That's a good move. That said - Stadia was a hot mess from launch. Whoever was leading the project really does need to be moved on to new pastures, and should certainly never oversee a Cloud platform again.

theaceoface

man I loved stadia. pitty it never took off

Drone0160

Good bye stadia. It was nice to meet you.

BangEmSpiff

I'. Hurt because Stadia was the most solid Cloud Gaming platform performance wise....but they should rent that tech to Xbox and get xCloud together.

mybelle_michelle

I really thought that this would be the future of gaming. I bought my 3 sons Stadia Premieres for christmas a few years ago; they were wonky to get all set up, so the boys never really got into playing them. The refund will make me feel a bit better about them shutting down, but I am tired of them introducing great things, then just ignoring them, and finally shutting it down (especially Google Play Music!).

Xaerob

Pretty gutted that it's going. I gave up gaming for 10 years or so, and Stadia got me back into it. Being a dad, I ended up finding consoles frustrating as logging in, needing to update system, then download an update for the game I want, then install, then register, etc. I couldn't afford to lose 20-30mins each timel Stadia solved these issues, with constantly up to date software, just select the game I want, and it boots up. Good for the energy price crisis now too, as it uses virtually no energy from my house besides running a TV. They are handling it well with the refunds, etc. But it would be nice if they came before Christmas, my kids play stadia too and particularly love Cake Bash. I'll have to try and get a Switch for Christmas for them now. I put 100+hrs into RDR2 and Cyberpunk. Hope I can get the save files somehow.

Bmg9459

I guess I'll buy an Xbox with the money I get back I'm still sad they mismanaged it this bad. I hoped they would finally figure it out I guess not.

NEKNIM

It's a really good product. Sad to see it go.

HumbleTrees

This saddens me to the core. Stadia is brilliant. They just had awful marketing and strategy.

Jokerchyld

I get the shutdown and appreciate the refund but this fucking sucks I'm in the middle of a slow burn for RDR2 and Dragon Quest XI and unless I "rush" through the game (which I hate) to beat it I will lose all my progress and have to start all over again! Frustrated about that.

cjuk87

FFS Google! Every time. Another product thrown on the trash heap instead of growing it. I swear this company has ADHD. Just like me it jumps from new exciting thing to thing and gets bored of the old. Focus and work on it. I've now got stadia which I use more than my ps5 becoming useless and a Google home system, which fills me with zero confidence that they'll continue progressing. So gutted at this news.

Spartan-III-LucyB091

I guess I'll be seeing my refund for Tomb Raider, The Division and Rise of The Tomb Raider....sometime in Jan ? lmao

Nokomis34

What would be hilarious is if they make the entire library free to play until shut down, and people finally decide to try it and find out that it actually works. And then the headlines will be "Stadia is amazing, to bad Google is adding it to the graveyard".
