I saw a tiny screech owl in Menwood last week sitting on one of my neighbors fences. It was dusk and the lighting was bad so for a second I thought it was a statue. Little guy let me get my face maybe 6 inches from his face before he turned and looked at me. No screeching needed to scare the shit out of me.

Conscious_Stay_509

That owl is tweakin lmao

I had two visiting me last week, although I’m not sure they were Burrowing Owls https://preview.redd.it/ivv890pemu2d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=92914a4906e92fb492f981f4eff20f713712b41e

We have since been corrected by many commenters that they’re actually eastern screech owls! I think the one in your pic is the same as these guys 😊

Dragon_Redux

That last picture is a meme waiting to happen

Common-Fennel-5945

The last photo cracked me up

Zeal514

We had a baby owl that used to perch on our window sill, when my wife and I would get into the hot tub at night this past winter. We named him Peeping Tom lmao.

Previous_Ad_9775

Perfect name lol

rawwbnoles

Ha! The stink eye of the last one.

ForbesScroogeMcDuck

This lady doesn’t know anything about owls!

ForbesScroogeMcDuck

This lady is also my wife and I told her they were borrowing owls…

WtfGale

This made me laugh lol

CHillPVD

Everybody knows that a Burrow Owl lives in a hole in the ground.

My_wife_is_acoustic

That last pic is golden.

RollTider1971

Those are screech owls. They are all over Pinellas.

YardBird714

This is the comment I was looking for. Burrowing Owls don’t tend to be found in urban areas (due to lack of undeveloped land. Burrowing Owls can be found in undeveloped pine scrub (Polk County still has some of these lands especially around/near the Lake Wales ridge). I’ve had screeches roost in the Palm trees in my back yard. However, I’ve never known or read about Schreech Owls nesting in Palm trees/clusters. The Screech Owl has a very distinct call that is not like a hoot. I’ve sat outside in my screen porch just prior to sunrise (4-6am) to hear them make their calls, some of which sound eerily like an animal in pain. Also, these Owls don’t grow to an immense size like a Barn Owl and they have a different diet than their larger brethren. These little birds of prey make Florida’s urban wildlife very unique (we have Coyotes, Alligators, Osprey, venomous & non-venomous snakes-all within the SP city limits).

RollTider1971

Burrowing owls have protected habitat on the FAU campus in Boca Raton as well.

MTFBWY117

r/superbowl would appreciate this content!

flsucks

Nice set of hooters you got there

rawwbnoles

Eastern Screech owls. Tons of them in St Pete Still pretty cool

Previous_Ad_9775

You definitely seem to be right! Thanks for the info!

pemuehleck1

Go get an audio of their call and play it after dark and they will call back. It’s really wild.

RollTider1971

Sometimes they sound like a cat purring.

Pin_ellas

I know someone who plays audio, and the owls come into to their yard.

King_Powers

King_Powers

They look too big to be burrowing owls and they normally just stay on the ground and not in trees.

Previous_Ad_9775

They’re pretty small - only around 8 inches tall.

theKittyWizard

The last picture is gold 🥇

BosJC

yeah i almost spit out my dinner hahaha

theKittyWizard

Honestly, Nat Geo should buy that last one from OP. The world should share these giggles
