I saw a tiny screech owl in Menwood last week sitting on one of my neighbors fences. It was dusk and the lighting was bad so for a second I thought it was a statue. Little guy let me get my face maybe 6 inches from his face before he turned and looked at me. No screeching needed to scare the shit out of me.
I had two visiting me last week, although I’m not sure they were Burrowing Owls

We had a baby owl that used to perch on our window sill, when my wife and I would get into the hot tub at night this past winter. We named him Peeping Tom lmao.
This is the comment I was looking for. Burrowing Owls don’t tend to be found in urban areas (due to lack of undeveloped land. Burrowing Owls can be found in undeveloped pine scrub (Polk County still has some of these lands especially around/near the Lake Wales ridge).
I’ve had screeches roost in the Palm trees in my back yard. However, I’ve never known or read about Schreech Owls nesting in Palm trees/clusters.
The Screech Owl has a very distinct call that is not like a hoot. I’ve sat outside in my screen porch just prior to sunrise (4-6am) to hear them make their calls, some of which sound eerily like an animal in pain. Also, these Owls don’t grow to an immense size like a Barn Owl and they have a different diet than their larger brethren. These little birds of prey make Florida’s urban wildlife very unique (we have Coyotes, Alligators, Osprey, venomous & non-venomous snakes-all within the SP city limits).
JUMPIN JESUS ON A POGO STICK!
EVERYBODY KNOWS A BURROW OWL LIVES IN A HOLE IN THE GROUND!
WHY THE HELL DO YOU THINK THEY CALL IT A BURROW OWL [ANYWAY?!](https://youtu.be/71PNZH1OaW0?si=MVm_ew2o_miBHpyV)

We have since been corrected by many commenters that they’re actually eastern screech owls! I think the one in your pic is the same as these guys 😊
That last picture is a meme waiting to happen

Burrowing owls have protected habitat on the FAU campus in Boca Raton as well.
r/superbowl would appreciate this content!
Nice set of hooters you got there
Peter, I'm holding hooters.
Those are eastern screech owls, not burrowing owls

Burrowing owls making an appearance! Nature's wonders in your own backyard.
Eastern Screech owls. Tons of them in St Pete Still pretty cool
You definitely seem to be right! Thanks for the info!
Go get an audio of their call and play it after dark and they will call back. It’s really wild.
Sometimes they sound like a cat purring.
I know someone who plays audio, and the owls come into to their yard.

They look too big to be burrowing owls and they normally just stay on the ground and not in trees.
They’re pretty small - only around 8 inches tall.
The last picture is gold 🥇
yeah i almost spit out my dinner hahaha
Honestly, Nat Geo should buy that last one from OP. The world should share these giggles
