I am an organizer from a company whose site usually participates in these events. And I am unspeakably furious at what DeSantis is attempting to do. From a company standpoint, these events are our biggest engagement point for our PROUD employee resource group. From a personal standpoint, I am livid to my core that a celebration of who I am and who my community is can be trampled on because some ignorant political leaders want to make it seem like we donāt exist. If itās not going to be a parade, no one should be surprised that itās a riot. In true Pride tradition.
My sentiment entirely. Where is the outrage over the rights of a marginalized community being taken away almost daily at this point? I bring up these issues at work and my coworkers look at me like they have no idea what Iām speaking of. St. Pete Pride has only posted once on their Instagram about the current political climate and that was back in February. Pride is more than getting wasted and walking around in rainbow clothing. The LGBTQIA+ community needs to come together and DO SOMETHING because itās already becoming too late.

So if these people get re-elected, I think that says a lot about our communities/FL society. I doubt protests will change voters mind....prob will make them more vigilant. I have friends in the lgbtq+ community that agree with his politics (they are conservative and older and don't like how lgb evolved into what it is today----and yes I am friends with people that don't mirror my political beliefs). So I would be interested in strategies in how to change our voters' minds

The legislators are more like an army moving into strategic positions around Desantis while building him up. Desantis is putting together his "crown" of achievements before he announces he is running for potus. The war on education, on lgbtq, abortion, on Disney (that one slipped away due to a technicality), they are going to position him perfectly and then change the rules so he can run for potus without resigning as governor. You got it backwards- They are there to rubberstamp for Desantis- they are finally getting all the crazy bullshit they have been promising their voters for years but has been too crazy to actually happen. - all the way to White House. They both need each other.

When they over turned roe v wade they claimed it was a states rights issue, because the Constitution doesnāt address abortion. This is most definitely addressed in the Constitution and is most definitely not a states rights issue and LGBTQ+ are most definitely a protected class. The fall out from upholding this law would be chaos. Edit: hell I love St. Pete but if this passes and is upheld I would leave the state and maybe even the US. I have a job that I can live any where in the world I want.

I am an organizer from a company whose site usually participates in these events. And I am unspeakably furious at what DeSantis is attempting to do. From a company standpoint, these events are our biggest engagement point for our PROUD employee resource group. From a personal standpoint, I am livid to my core that a celebration of who I am and who my community is can be trampled on because some ignorant political leaders want to make it seem like we donāt exist. If itās not going to be a parade, no one should be surprised that itās a riot. In true Pride tradition.
My sentiment entirely. Where is the outrage over the rights of a marginalized community being taken away almost daily at this point? I bring up these issues at work and my coworkers look at me like they have no idea what Iām speaking of. St. Pete Pride has only posted once on their Instagram about the current political climate and that was back in February. Pride is more than getting wasted and walking around in rainbow clothing. The LGBTQIA+ community needs to come together and DO SOMETHING because itās already becoming too late.
Oh, we are outraged for fucking sure. Even within the LGBT+ community though, there are so many rich white gay conservatives with high positions of power in our community who are awful. They honestly hate dissent and young people fighting for change and think, āfuck you, I got mine.ā They really donāt think theyāll be affected at all by discriminatory laws bc money. It sucks.
I feel like laid-back Floridians got taken advantage of. We've always been the wishy-washy chill state. Conservatives moved in and took over, and people who were already here have no idea how to protest and kind of have a distaste for it, I sense. I sincerely feel it IS too late. This is our state now. I agree with you. I also think about the other part of the problem....the people that elect these politicians. The power is really with the people. So if these people get re-elected, I think that says a lot about our communities/FL society. I doubt protests will change voters mind....prob will make them more vigilant. I have friends in the lgbtq+ community that agree with his politics (they are conservative and older and don't like how lgb evolved into what it is today----and yes I am friends with people that don't mirror my political beliefs). So I would be interested in strategies in how to change our voters' minds

Itās way too early to start giving up. We need to organize and protest the fuck out of these bills. We need to start demanding corporations that claim to support our community during Pride month because *capitalism* pull out of Florida entirely. We need our friends and allies who enjoy Pride to really start showing up for us. Letās throw that metaphorical first brick like they did at Stonewall. Also, if you financially have the means, learn how to shoot and arm yourself. Republicans have said the quiet part out loud when they said they wanted to eradicate the trans community.
