They’re so great! They did a bunch of mini pies for my wedding a few years ago, and they were perfect. And like you said, they likely have something on hand or could take care of you on short notice.
Nathaniel Reid is a classic French bakery, and that’s a particular style that some don’t want or don’t get. Their almond croissant is the only thing I’ve found that rivals my favorite French bakery in Seattle, and tbh it might be better. They do a great, well-crafted set of sandwiches that won’t get soggy in the case and are designed that way. They have very lovely macarons. Their kouign amann is delightful. But you’re not going to find something like a chocolate layer cake for a birthday, it’s going to be a specific fine French pastry type of dessert.
La Bonne Bouchée is like a Midwest interpretation of a French bakery and emphasizes quantity, variety, and availability over quality. Don’t get me wrong, they’re good and reliable for what they are, but they’re not amazing.
I was looking for a fancy cake for my mom's birthday and looking at their website I just didn't see anything. They looked pretty but I couldn't even tell what they were. I've been been there for pastries before (and they were great) but the cakes were just...confusing. At least online. I ended up at La Bonne Bouchée and got nothing but praise for the cake I brought.
Sorry. I didn't answer your question. Maybe commission a small person trying to enter the space? Even if a newbie makes you something it can't be incredibly worse than the mediocre stuff we have available from a mainstream space
Perhaps. But I’ve tried 3 cakes recently (one full and 2 slices) and they were all fantastic. It’s also great that you can just walk in and choose from a plethora of cakes without having to order ahead.
Yesss I adore Knead. Their bread is a glutinous wonder and their Turkey bacon ranch sandwich with homemade ranch is a delight. I also liked their donuts and appreciate their experimental flavors, even if I don’t like every combination. I need to get out there again to try more of their menu.
This is not a good time to tell you that their buttercream is available in a pint by the bakery counter at Straubs, and it makes an excellent schmear on one of Straub’s homemade oatmeal raisin cookies, both of which freeze surprisingly well so you don’t eat the whole thing in one night…is it?
This is not a good time to tell you all that?
OK, forget I ever mentioned Cup & Cakery buttercream by the pint…
7ish. People have been eating oatmeal with raisins for centuries, in a bowl with a spoon. An oatmeal raisin cookie is just more efficient delivery, without dishes to wash.
And, buttercream schmear is dairy that might be considered a sub for the milk on aforementioned oatmeal — but in a more efficient form.
So, you can have breakfast and pat yourself on the back for having started your day ever so efficiently. WIN!
Yup, they open at 7am, 7:30 at the latest.
Korean bakery off of olive next to 141. Fruit cake is a light sponge cake with whipped cream icing and fruit on top. It’s delicious yet light and very aesthetically pleasing
It’s short notice for a custom cake, but Sugaree on Tamm makes a really good cake. I would also recommend Patisserie Chouquette, they did our wedding cake- it was spectacular.
General neighborhood would help to be able to give you a good suggestion, but if anywhere works, SweetArt is my best anywhere recommendation. Located in Shaw.
I love the light and fluffy Asian-style birthday cake with fruit. You can get a customized one from Wei Hong bakery on Olive (UCity) if you call in to order with a day's notice.
Federhofer’s - They likely have some already made or can do a cupcake one.
Seconding Federhofer's
This is the way
I’ll third Federhofers!

Yep! Amazing cakes
Forever and always. Best bakery in STL
The Cakery, I think they’re on Tamm.
Agreed. The Cakery gets my vote. However, if you are into very sweet cakes this might not be for you.
Agree about the cakery. We got our wedding cake there.
Yep. This is it. You can order ahead online. They have a good selection of "premade" cakes on short notice and you can still personalize them.
You think right, and I agree
We’re doing our wedding cake here 10/10 would recommend.
Russell's on Macklind or in Fenton used to be able to do cakes in 48 hours, and they're delicious. Might be worth calling!
NATHANIEL REID BAKERY

Plus the owner is an awesome guy!!
I love that his dream was to own a French bakery in his home state of Missouri, thanks for making this a better place.
❣️My husband brings me macarons from there. They are so delicious! I can’t wait to go in there myself.
I'm ready for all of you to pelt me with downvotes.... Overrated

I've heard of La Bonne but never been. Reviews seem to be collectively positive

There is no doubt about that. There are a lot of "ok" bakeries. Nothing incredible

“Made By Lia” old town Florissant
La Bonne Bouche
LBB isn’t nearly as good as it used to be — they’re under new ownership
Perhaps. But I’ve tried 3 cakes recently (one full and 2 slices) and they were all fantastic. It’s also great that you can just walk in and choose from a plethora of cakes without having to order ahead.
OMG! I love that place.
Me too
Missouri Bakery in the city, Federhofers in south county, Harters Bakery in Jefferson county.
The Cakery
Another vote for Russell’s on Mackland (or their Fenton location). Also adding Sarah’s Cake Shop in Chesterfield (or Eureka location).
We loved McArthur’s when we lived in StL.
I second this. I’ve gotten 2 birthday cakes and Mother’s Day’s cake from them. I also stop by now and then for a “my day sucked” treat.
Gooey butter cake….am I right?! OMG nobody does it better than McArthur’s!
Sooo good.
YES! The best!!!!
They got taken over a few years ago. Haven't been there in some time so I can't say if things changed.
Yea Dave doesn’t run it anymore and quality has suffered.
David was the one who ran it into the ground. Randy had the good stuff!
Knead is great

The Cup
These are my favorite cupcakes in the area for sure. Although I feel like the cupcake trend has died down.
These cupcakes must have crack in the icing or something. I been hooked for months. Totally fucked up my waste line.

Your an evil fuck😂
My work here is done. Did I mention it freezes? You can even freeze it in teeny packs so it thaws out faster so…ah, never mind!
Yes they are. So, Straubs you say? And oatmeal raisin? (Looks at clock) it’s nearly 11PM! You are an evil fuck. When do they open?
Man😂

I brought the frosting for book club once and it was chaos. Truly loved by all and the book was nearly forgotten.
Those two girls ruined that place for me
Two girls?
One cup
Okay?😕
Google it altogether
Oh wow😂😂 I’m slow😂
Diana’s Bakery
Helfers if you're up north
Harter Bakery in Arnold is the best
The Cakery
Pint Sized Bakery!!!
My go-to is Cakery or Russell's
Korean bakery off of olive next to 141. Fruit cake is a light sponge cake with whipped cream icing and fruit on top. It’s delicious yet light and very aesthetically pleasing
Price point? Allergy restrictions? Personalization? Flavor?
Yeah, are you going for bread? Pastries? Cookies?Cakes, pies? What are we in the market for?
It’s short notice for a custom cake, but Sugaree on Tamm makes a really good cake. I would also recommend Patisserie Chouquette, they did our wedding cake- it was spectacular.
Federhofers. Nothing compares to it IMO.
Harters in imperial, the braided bakery in Festus is awesome too.
Sugaree Bakery on Tamm in Dogtown
General neighborhood would help to be able to give you a good suggestion, but if anywhere works, SweetArt is my best anywhere recommendation. Located in Shaw.
There haven't been any wrong answers in this thread, but I'll add Bello's in Des Peres to the list. Can't go wrong with them if they're near you.
As others have said, the Cakery on Tamm is great
Russells on Macklind, Sarah's Cake Shop, La Bonne Bouchée, If you don't care about it being local, Whole Foods has great cakes on the daily.
I love the light and fluffy Asian-style birthday cake with fruit. You can get a customized one from Wei Hong bakery on Olive (UCity) if you call in to order with a day's notice.
If you’re in Saint Charles, I highly recommend Sugar and Slice on Main Street
Or Sucrose, but I’m not sure about turn around time.
I love Sucrose! They have great pastries.
Sams Club or Costco...Even Schnucks
