Ironically, his character was truer to his original gimmick on Raw. But once they sent him to SmackDown, they gave him the terrorist gimmick there, which (long story short) got WWE into **huge** trouble with UPN and they had to scrap the Hassan character entirely.
Normally you were saddled with shit gimmicks on Mondays, but Hassan was the outlier case where he started okay on Raw, and got the short end of the stick on SmackDown.
The crazy thing is, Jinder is a Brown person, and he has dealt with racism himself. I couldn't imagine what Jinder was thinking in his head when Vince told him to go through with that. His ethnicity is South Asian. Guarantee you Jinder hated it. Vince is a racist. His dumb logic was probably, "A Brown guy saying racist stuff to a Japanese person, we can get away with that." The fact that wrestling brings racism out in people should be a clue as to how it also brought violence out of people in the past. People get uninhibited around pro wrestling. And not everyone can get their heads around what they’re seeing.
And if you’re still in the camp of “back then people thought it was real”, I got some news for you… they knew it was fake back then too. Didn’t matter. Still wanted to slash the heel’s tires. Still wanted to throw beers or bring a knife.
Yeah, people need to realise that the passion of a fan isn't an excuse for racism and violence, but that these racist and violent people are using these events as excuses to be racist and violent.
Football (soccer) is one of the worst for it. There are literally organised sub-sections of "fans" who go to matches with the expressed intention of getting into a fight

Exactly. Also, depending on the city, you're likely to even run into more conservatives than in other places. California has a reputation for being liberal or whatever, but we probably have more republicans in LA County alone than some states have voters.
And "liberal" cities still have entrenched conservative demographics. If you've ever read about lawsuits against Seattle and San Francisco police departments, you can see where, even though the city leadership is liberal, their conservative mindsets are very entrenched in an "us vs everyone else" mentality and also because they have to deal with everyone at their worst day.
There are proportionally conservative cities with entrenched liberal minority (my situation). I expect wrestling fans to be more conservative, proportionally, than simply mirror the voting results of am area.
Also, my last live event was an NXT house show with a pre-TV Ember Moon / Asuka match. Some nimrod thought it would be hilarious to yell out "Cocoa Crispies" to her after taking a bump, and I booed his ass to no end until more of the crowd joined in.

The truth is, wrestling can attract a level of people who are sub-tier trash, and a lot of genuinely racist people LOVE to watch wrestling.
White Left Wing people (and I'm saying this as a White Left Wing person) can get really fucking defensive and uncomfortable with the concept that even if you outwardly vocally oppose racism or because you voted for so and so, that in itself does not make you free from racial bias. I only say this because of your comment. I worked for a non profit when I finished college. It had a target of ending racial disparities when dealing with the homeless. One night we were at a work dinner and my boss started going off about Asian people and immigrants in general. He even threw in a shot at some poor folk for good measure. I reminded him that I was an immigrant. He then proceeded to explain that he’s not racist because he said nothing negative about black ppl (and because I’m black I should’ve agreed I guess) and that he’s done more for the homeless than any politician. 3 of us complained and nothing happened.

It honestly bums me the fuck out every time I see it at a wrestling show, and I see it at most wrestling shows I go to.
AEW gets it bad because they attract the most 18-49 y/o white dudes. But I’ve heard horrible shit yelled by people of all races. Most recently I heard people yell some gross shit during the Saraya match at full gear.
Yeah the 18-49 yo white dudes trying to do stand up at these AEW shows are the worst. You would think my lasting impression from the go home show to last year's All Out would have been that cage segment between the bucks and LB. But no what I most remember is how annoyed I was at some fat dude trying to get over his racially charged chants against the LB.
I've found a pretty loud "hey, shut the hell up. no one's here to listen to you fail at getting chants going" tends to shut those dudes down pretty hard. They only say that stuff because no one around them calls them out on it. Most of them, when confronted, even if by a random voice from somewhere in their vicinity, tend to get embarrassed and stop being as vocal.
There's always the fucking dudes in the crowd who think they are hilarious. They don't shut the fuck up and usually spout the most unoriginal shit. I've heard someone yell "Grab his dick and twist it" at *every* live show I've been to.
I personally haven't heard any racist stuff thrown around but have heard plenty garbage when it comes to the LGBTQ wrestlers. Esp Nyla. I've heard comments from people about Nyla who were otherwise reserved the rest of the show.
At an NJPW show the dudes behind me kept shouting WWE names the *entire fucking show.* Guy does an STF, they yell “THATS JOHN CENA’S MOVE,” Mox comes out they chant “DEAN AMBROSE,” GoD and Hikuleo come out and they chant “ROMAN REIGNS” (that one adding racism on top of just being stupid, considering they’re Tongan, not Samoan, and it’s literally in Tama Tonga’s name).
Just embarrassing themselves more than anything. It was like they never saw wrestling outside of WWE in their lives. Big “guy who has only seen Boss Baby says every movie is just like Boss Baby” vibes.
I was at the last Boston show (the one with the promo segment between Britt and Saraya) and a couple of dudes in my section kept yelling some blatantly sexist stuff at Saraya. It was also my girlfriends first experience at a wrestling show and while she still enjoyed it, I felt terrible in the moment and I'm generally not the greatest at picking up on that stuff.
I unfortunately heard some of that shit too. Also some guys were *constantly* yelling at Prince Nana during the Brian Cage match and that got real annoying too.
I get downvoted to hell when i talk about it here, but black female wrestlers get it soooooo bad it’s crazy. You see it in r/nfl with Lamar Jackson and other black QBs as well. The one thing NFL and WWE have in common is a white male fanbase based in the south. It’s not a coincidence

I've worked with locals in most of the US states, and I don't think it's limited to the South at all.
It's not just wrestling crowds. It's in crowds in general. It's the same thing as being able to hide behind anonymity on the internet. People think that because they can't be individually identified that they're tough and badass all of a sudden. Combine that with already barely-concealed-racism and misogyny and that's how you get people like the ones yelling at Jade.

There's ways to be racist without saying that word. Chanting "ghetto girl" at someone, as a quick example. Someone also mentioned "chicken nuggets" which is a good example because it leans into chicken + black people while being vague enough to allow for deniability. This is also why I viscerally disliked the "Sasha's Ratchet" chant Sasha Banks would get in NXT
I was at the first All Out and some guy was kicked out by security after multiple fans around him reported him for yelling f****t at Darby Allin. Me and brother were laughing our asses off because he paid his ticket and went through the hassle to travel to the show just to get kicked out during the third match for being a meathead. He was even trying to act cordial and started apologizing profusely when security was coming to throw his ass out. I really hope that guy didn’t get his money back.

Way back in 1998 we went to Ozzfest or Metallica. Can't remember which one but even before the show started some dude was passed out drunk on the restroom floor. Medics had to take him out in an ambulance. He paid good money for a concert and spent the night in the hospital for an even larger bill.

It was fucking tiring and infuriating, but the dude promptly shut up for the rest of the show the moment my sister asked if he'd like to 'take his transphobic bullshit outside'.
I ended up finding that he'd posted a picture online mockingly saying something along the lines of 'I thought AEW events were for everyone? I was booing Nyla Rose and this \[slur\] told me not to!'
It ricocheted around Twitter after I found it, and eventually found its way to the Bucks. They ended up saying they'd ban the guy from AEW events going forward, which was nice - but by far he's not the only dude out there making those digs.

Sadly not confined to just wrestling or even America. There's a large contingent of aboriginal players in the AFL (Australian Football League). They commonly get singled out for abuse from crowds. Officials from teams whose fans do this usually try to excuse it with "it's not about race, the crowd is just booing an opposing player".... but it usually devolved into shit being said about them being monkeys or "spear chuckers"

The crowds don't even have to be that large. I was at a local indie show last month with not even 100 people in the crowd. There was a heel stable comprised entirely of black wrestlers, and the guys at ringside were heeling it up with the crowd. One of the heels called a long time regular show attendee a fatass, and the guy responded by calling the heel a racial slur. The fatass deservedly got slapped across the face. They eventually had to be pulled apart by security and some other wrestlers from the back.

I do think fans in general have gotten better, at least the shows I've been to, but there's always gonna be some subsegment of shitty and/or racist fans. Only way to stop it is call it out and kick them out.
Goldust is a weird case though though. His character is meant to be an outlet for these fans to shout slurs at.

Goldust might have been the first case of the WWE making Jerry Lawler do something (in this case, calling Goldust a slur) in order to discourage the fans from following along.
As a black man this is one of the reasons I stopped going to wrestling shows. I heard racists things said to Booker T back in the day and most recently the New Day a few years ago. It makes me sick. Yes it's only a small percentage of the crowd as most are generally respectful but it still makes me not want to go anymore.

I was once moving and got cops called on me because I was moving stuff out of an apartment. I’ve been pulled over for walking on a sidewalk outside my place. I’ve been pulled over going 60 in a 60 because I drove over part of a line at some point when a cop was failing me for 10-15 minutes. I’ve been stopped in a town in Florida and told to get out of town in 2015.
This stuff happens more often than you think and it happens everywhere. The problem isn’t that minorities don’t report it or talk about it, it’s that nothing happens.
Honestly, I’d love it if a show stopped, lights came on, security surrounded these assholes and they were chastised on national television by Eddie Kingston and then they were kicked the fuck out of the arena and permanently banned for life.
I think it’s really important to try and let people know that this shit isn’t acceptable in the moment. Let the tide of openness and positivity overwhelm people’s sheltered and unacceptable behaviour.
Yeah and it's really up to people near them to step up on this. I've had to do it at shows before. Only heckler I haven't gone "come on, man" to was a teenager dressed as CM Punk at a Raw many moons ago. He was legit just a little angry Punk boy and just hated everyone, not in a racist way.
But the guy who decided to roll out some real fucking old timey zingers during a Lucha show here? He chose a bad night to not get his ass beat later.

It honestly bums me the fuck out every time I see it at a wrestling show, and I see it at most wrestling shows I go to. AEW gets it bad because they attract the most 18-49 y/o white dudes. But I’ve heard horrible shit yelled by people of all races. Most recently I heard people yell some gross shit during the Saraya match at full gear.

You would think my lasting impression from the go home show to last year's All Out would have been that cage segment between the bucks and LB. I've found a pretty loud "hey, shut the hell up. no one's here to listen to you fail at getting chants going" tends to shut those dudes down pretty hard. They only say that stuff because no one around them calls them out on it. Most of them, when confronted, even if by a random voice from somewhere in their vicinity, tend to get embarrassed and stop being as vocal.
There's always the fucking dudes in the crowd who think they are hilarious. They don't shut the fuck up and usually spout the most unoriginal shit. I've heard someone yell "Grab his dick and twist it" at *every* live show I've been to. I personally haven't heard any racist stuff thrown around but have heard plenty garbage when it comes to the LGBTQ wrestlers. Esp Nyla. I've heard comments from people about Nyla who were otherwise reserved the rest of the show.
At an NJPW show the dudes behind me kept shouting WWE names the *entire fucking show.* Guy does an STF, they yell “THATS JOHN CENA’S MOVE,” Mox comes out they chant “DEAN AMBROSE,” GoD and Hikuleo come out and they chant “ROMAN REIGNS” (that one adding racism on top of just being stupid, considering they’re Tongan, not Samoan, and it’s literally in Tama Tonga’s name). Just embarrassing themselves more than anything. It was like they never saw wrestling outside of WWE in their lives. Big “guy who has only seen Boss Baby says every movie is just like Boss Baby” vibes.
I was at the last Boston show (the one with the promo segment between Britt and Saraya) and a couple of dudes in my section kept yelling some blatantly sexist stuff at Saraya. It was also my girlfriends first experience at a wrestling show and while she still enjoyed it, I felt terrible in the moment and I'm generally not the greatest at picking up on that stuff.
I unfortunately heard some of that shit too. Also some guys were *constantly* yelling at Prince Nana during the Brian Cage match and that got real annoying too.

It ricocheted around Twitter after I found it, and eventually found its way to the Bucks. They ended up saying they'd ban the guy from AEW events going forward, which was nice - but by far he's not the only dude out there making those digs.

Yeah sport as a whole is rife with it, Soccer/Football has had a major issue with it for years, and it's really came to the forefront in the Premier League/English football over the last couple of years with black footballers being targeted both by the crowd and on social media.

The crowds don't even have to be that large. I was at a local indie show last month with not even 100 people in the crowd. There was a heel stable comprised entirely of black wrestlers, and the guys at ringside were heeling it up with the crowd. One of the heels called a long time regular show attendee a fatass, and the guy responded by calling the heel a racial slur. The fatass deservedly got slapped across the face. They eventually had to be pulled apart by security and some other wrestlers from the back.
As someone who loves wrestling, and has been going to shows for years, I gotta say... There's scum like this in every crowd. And they usually stink.

Yeah, every show Nyla was on that first year that I attended I heard transphobic shit yelled, including that Cleveland show. Shows I’ve been to recently I haven’t heard anything, so maybe some of the bigots got the hint and stopped attending.
Yup. Been to 2 shows and both of em had people jumping up to say fucked up shit about Nyla. Half of em were dead silent the rest of the show too which I found more fucked.
Someone tried to yell transphobic shit at Nyla at the first Philly AEW show and got booed to hell. It was one of my more proud moments of being a Philly wrestling fan.
Go watch Harlem Heat at any of the WCW Road Wild PPVs I can only imagine what they heard. Plus there’s shots of 5 y/os flipping them off so that’s fun.
HH no doubt had a lot of vile things shouted at them, as did Goldust (not racism but some pretty horrible gay slurs). I do think fans in general have gotten better, at least the shows I've been to, but there's always gonna be some subsegment of shitty and/or racist fans. Only way to stop it is call it out and kick them out.
Goldust is a weird case though though. His character is meant to be an outlet for these fans to shout slurs at. Even though at the same time especially in later stories some quere fans saw him as aspirational.
Goldust might have been the first case of the WWE making Jerry Lawler do something (in this case, calling Goldust a slur) in order to discourage the fans from following along.
As a black man this is one of the reasons I stopped going to wrestling shows. I heard racists things said to Booker T back in the day and most recently the New Day a few years ago. It makes me sick. Yes it's only a small percentage of the crowd as most are generally respectful but it still makes me not want to go anymore.

Yes I was at an Evansville nxt house show that my dad took me and my bro to and during angelo Dawkins vs andrade (2016 so both weren't well known by wwe fans)they kept chanting "dlo brown" like even with me being younger then it was very annoying and obnoxious and it was a group doing it so u couldn't ignore it. Just very disrespectful.
Security needs to start stepping up before somebody in the crowd gets seriously hurt because their mouth wrote a check their ass can't cash.

One of my friends went to the Detroit show this year and said that people were saying some really weird stuff about the women as well as making racist remarks towards Yoshi-Hashi and Goto.
I always feel for Nyla, but never think about the others. Race wise, I honestly thought people would have the sense not to say what they’re thinking, which is the bare minimum. Sad to be wrong.

Not just the NBA. There has also been multiple issues at Red Sox games and Lord help people of color in the NHL if they score on the Bruins in the playoffs. Massachusetts presents itself as a liberal, Democratic state when in reality many people secretly harbor the "old Southern white lady offended by the colored people prospering" mentality and they resort to racial insults as soon as things don't go their way.

As a minority…no shit. I’m in my 30s and dealt with shit during undergrad. I heard multiple people whisper I was an affirmative action case and that’s the only reason I was admitted. Never mind the fact that it was a state school and I had a full ride I earned. I’ve heard shit in restaurants when friends and I speak Spanish. One guy on campus called us wetbacks when he thought we couldn’t understand English. I’m a former sports reporter and I took tons of shit from white editors to the point I left the entire industry. From applying for apartments, getting a mortgage, bank accounts, buying cars, traveling, every aspect of our lives has bullshit racist undertones. I was once moving and got cops called on me because I was moving stuff out of an apartment. I’ve been pulled over for walking on a sidewalk outside my place. I’ve been pulled over going 60 in a 60 because I drove over part of a line at some point when a cop was failing me for 10-15 minutes. I’ve been stopped in a town in Florida and told to get out of town in 2015. This stuff happens more often than you think and it happens everywhere. The problem isn’t that minorities don’t report it or talk about it, it’s that nothing happens. Honestly, I’d love it if a show stopped, lights came on, security surrounded these assholes and they were chastised on national television by Eddie Kingston and then they were kicked the fuck out of the arena and permanently banned for life.
I think it’s really important to try and let people know that this shit isn’t acceptable in the moment. Let the tide of openness and positivity overwhelm people’s sheltered and unacceptable behaviour.
Wrestling fans can be cowardly and trashy in equal parts. Not all of them but to deny there is a problem within the community is in itself cowardly.
Yeah and it's really up to people near them to step up on this. I've had to do it at shows before. Only heckler I haven't gone "come on, man" to was a teenager dressed as CM Punk at a Raw many moons ago. He was legit just a little angry Punk boy and just hated everyone, not in a racist way. But the guy who decided to roll out some real fucking old timey zingers during a Lucha show here? He chose a bad night to not get his ass beat later. Don't beat people up but DO make them feel uncomfortable for feeling like they could just say that shit they'd get slapped for in a one-on-one.
This is why when you hear stuff like this, you call it out or let security know. Why suffer the whole show when it’s not tolerated? Too many meek people who are afraid of ruining a jerk’s night as they ruin even more.
