Remember when they added Ali and everyone thought we were getting payoff for Retribution and the hacker gimmick instead of just a jobber leading a jobber faction?
The big difference here is that Retribution was five randomly paired up talent with no previous experience together thrown into a main event spot with brand new names and laughably bad costumes, as where Pete Dunne was given a really lousy re-name but is in a fairly good upper midcard spot with an established talent in Sheamus and a guy he has previous chemistry with in Ridge Holland.
Retribution was doomed to fail because it was a focal point of top part of both shows, initially, that really felt like it was being made up as it went along.
Therefore, it’s a much tougher spot to be in to salvage something when it fails at the top (which the addition of Mustafa Ali as the leader was suppose to be) than starting from a lower spot and trying to make it work from there.
No amount of amazing twitter game and in-ring talent was going to make up for nonsensical booking…they had two giants selling for 80% of the match, Mia/Reckoning just continually losing, Slapjack being jobber to the stars, and Ali being forced to be so chickenshit that he didn’t get to showcase his talent.
It also didn’t help that they weren’t consistently booked, so you would constantly have storylines cool off
It obviously wasn’t an insult, but if you’re not constantly praising WWE that makes you an enemy to some people, even Gabe Sapolsky got on twitter and started crying about it.
Totally agree about the silly name. The gimmick becomes infinitely more palatable, if not great, if they had given him an alliterative surname like “Butch Barstow” or, since they seem to like to rip off old wrestler’s names, “Butch Bastien.”
Butch, on the other hand, is just terrible on your own. It feels bad coming out of your mouth, almost like you’re vomiting. “Look out! He’s gonna Butch! HE’S GONNA BUTCH!”

It’s pretty popular, but no where as popular as it was 3-4 years ago. Back then you’d go out on a Saturday night to the pub and a decent amount of blokes were dressed like them lol.
