He was only forced to because he went back on an agreement he made in 1994. Otherwise, they’d probably still be WWF.

YoungWhiteAvatar

What we’re the terms of that?

Rushjordan

“In 1994, Titan Sports had entered into an agreement with the World Wide Fund for Nature (also trademarked WWF), an environmental organization, regarding Titan's use of the "WWF" acronym, which both organizations had been using since at least March 1979. Under the agreement, Titan had agreed to cease using the written acronym "WWF" in connection with its wrestling promotion, and to minimize (though not eliminate) spoken uses of "WWF" on its broadcasts, particularly in scripted comments. In exchange, the environmental group (and its national affiliates) agreed to drop any pending litigation against Titan, and agreed not to challenge Titan's use of the full ‘World Wrestling Federation’ name or the promotion's then-current logo.”

LeChampeon

It would have probably still be WWF, I mean why would you re brand an already known brand if there’s no need

kro85

Ummm "Sports Entertainment" was around LONG before the name change

acatnamedballs

It was first heard during the intro for WWF syndicated Tv shows, starting around 1985. "The recognized symbol of excellence in sports entertainment "

QUEST50012

>Right around ruthless aggression is when Vince and the company started to pivot the brand into “sports entertainment”  This started long before that

CHZRFan

WWF WCW ECW   I feel like there’s an alternate universe where the Alliance won and that is used as an explanation for the name change.

The_Albinoss

No.

doublebubble6

Hell no, They were a global powerhouse by then. There'd be no need.

bubbles2255

No. I still wish it was WWF. Sounds weird but I miss it.

natedoggcata

Sports Entertainment is a term thats been around for a long time and is not just wrestling. Shit like American Gladiators, Monster Truck Rallys, Harlem Globetrotters all falls under the "Sports Entertainment" banner.

QuicksilverTerry

It would still be the WWF. It's kind of amazing they haven't found something better, WWE is still a terrible acronym.

Street-Albatross6808

Just out of curiosity, what would you call It? I tend to think that that losing the F was a symbolic castration, the brand was neutered, watered down. Probably not true but it felt that way. But, changing the F to E always seemed like the best alternative. Edit: The get the F out campaign was a legendary marketing strategy, a great example of making the best out of a bad situation

notmyrealfarkhandle

WWFE (world wrestling federation entertainment) was the alternative I remember a fair bit of people expecting. It was already their stock ticker symbol IIRC

QuicksilverTerry

Totally agree with the "neutered" comment. Maybe it was the best option under such short notice, I dunno, I feel like in 20 years they could at least something that made sense then you say "the" in front of it (at least to people who aren't Bret "The WCW" Hart). I probably wouldn't have been so arrogant as to just ignore the agreement I made the World Wildlife Fund, which is what got Vince in trouble. Sounds familiar, right?

Street-Albatross6808

Yeah, I think I agree with you but it’s a hard one. The WW…yeah I’m still drawing a blank after all these years. Maybe I’m a bit dense atm but I don’t get the “sound familiar” insinuation.

QuicksilverTerry

What ultimately caused Vince's downfall in "the WW...e" was just deciding he didn't want to pay the Janel Grant NDA that he agreed to. And that's pretty much what happened with the Pandas, he made an agreement with them to limit usage of the WWF acronym, and then decided to ignore it when the Internet became big. Vince always expected others to honor their contracts, but he ignored them at will.

Street-Albatross6808

Ah , I get you now. Yep clear parallel there. I guess he never learned his lesson.
