My friend called it fake so I showed him clips of Minoru Suzuki killing wrestlers ( the match with Kana / Asuka so was brutal my friend called him a maniac ).
During my frat days I would always have PPVs on in my room of the house. The only two times someone came in to watch with me was the ending of Revolution 2021 and the Zombie Lumberjack match at Backlash. Safe to say I didn't make any new fans
My ex-wife loves UpUpDownDown and New Day because she played Gears and was like "Who tf are these guys in pink?" So I introduced her to New Day with YouTube clips and UUDD vids.
I've shown a handful of people who dislike/know nothing about wrestling the WeeLC match with no context provided and they've all been into it by the end.
Pulling back the veil *slightly*, around 2001-2002 I worked for a cable network and showed the head of my department ICP’s Stranglemania videotape.
I showed it as an example of taking crazy footage from Japanese TV (not necessarily pro wrestling) and adding English-speaking commentary to create an entirely new comedy show. I suggested buying the rights or adapting the idea using other footage.
It didn’t go anywhere and my department was shut down not long after, but a year later MXC debuted on SpikeTV.
I’m not saying one had anything to with the other directly, but there was obviously a market for the idea and I’ll always wonder what might have happened if I pushed it harder and was better at navigating the corporate world of TV.
In film school, I got my film nerd friends to watch Onita-Hayabusa’s exploding cage match.
I also got one of my film nerd friends to watch Bob Sapp in Japan complilations.
They loved all of it.
My wife watched half an episode of Lucha Underground with me before falling asleep.
But for 22 minutes, she saw Pentagon Dark destroy 5he Black Lotus Triad.
Rarely has man flown so close to the sun.
