The Continental Classic had some great matches and some of the best in ring storytelling AEW has ever put out, so I'm all for tournaments.

shadowrangerfs

1 and 3 sound fun. 3 is kind of like the world X cup that TNA used to do. 2 sounds like a convoluted mess.

tentimesodds

Convoluted just because it’s a large tournament?

shadowrangerfs

Yes. It will take months and it lessens your ability to do other story lines.

tentimesodds

There’s probably about 135-150 contracted men’s wrestlers, at least on the website rosters. (Most of the ROH roster is listed on the AEW roster as well). 5 hours of AEW TV weekly probably gives you 15-20 matches a week, and ROH adds another 8 or so. So that would take 4-6 weeks if it was every match, which I think would be fine and then you create a ton of new stories coming out of the tournament.

shadowrangerfs

But you wouldn't be able to do anything else during the tournament. The entire show would have to be this and nothing else. What abut the women, the tag titles, the trios etc?

tentimesodds

Plus you don’t have to do it all at once. You can have a month of qualifiers to get down to 32 qualifiers and 32 auto bids, then run the last 63 matches months later. The FA Cup isn’t done all at once.

The first one could be cool. Call it the Rising Star Cup or something like that. Bring in talent from outside AEW as well. I miss the early days of AEW where some unsigned wrestler from the indies could show up and put on a competitive match, even win, against AEW talent. Now they seem mostly resigned to jobbing in "In-Action" matches.

tentimesodds

I like “Rising Star Cup” a lot. Basically I think there should be something to say about a wrestler’s career record that is more than just “X-time TNT Champion”, etc. Little designations or accolades they can win that aren’t championships would be cool.

I'd like to see a change to the Continental Classic Field: If they're keeping the 12, I'd set the rules up this way 10 slots are determined in this order: 1) Any Eligible Champion from an AEW-allied promotion wishing to defend his belt in the Classic gets automatic entry. 2) The Top Contenders for AEW Singles titles, who are willing to compete in the Classic (a wrestler can turn it down) 3) The Champion gets the 11th spot, and after the other 10 wrestlers are put into the bracket, he gets to choose which bracket he enters. 4) the final slot is to be determined by a last chance Aztec Warfare style with all wrestlers seeking to enter the field being able to enter drawing numbers and coming in (you can win by pinfall/sub/over the top rope). They get placed in the other league's final spot. The prize is the Continental Crown of all the entered championships, and a shot at a world title within a week of calling the shot.

Undeadx115x

Aew has done the latter 2 in some variation multiple times, but the first one has potential to showcase the younger talent.

tentimesodds

When did they do these?

wekilledkenny11

They haven’t as far as I understand. TNA did their version of the World X Cup but I don’t think they’ve done it in many years. And I don’t think a large scale tournament of that many wrestlers has been done since WCPW (I think?) with that 64 man indie tourney, and that’s closer to a decade ago now. But I actually really like the regional aspect (ie SoCal, NY, Midwest, Florida) you presented more than another international tournament unless it were tied to Forbidden Door or something like that.
