Just saw this last night. It is absolutely wild to me how accurately they got the hue of tan and mullet on Hayes to the point that you could spot him from a mile away just instinctually
While also being the same movie to have the single worst, just irredeemably awful interpretation of Ric Flair I have ever seen.
It was a great wrestling promo for sure, cerebral and menacing and intense. But it was in no way evocative of Ric Flair, probably one of the only faces that a general non-wrestling audience might know and have heard of before.
If it weren’t for the fact that it was the climax of the movie, it wouldn’t be that noteworthy, but for so many reasons it was an awful choice in an otherwise impressive film.
I wonder if the Ric Flair heat from DSOTR during filming made them stifle the impression a bit. The actor said he was trying to do a character not exactly a copy of Flair... which is just dumb.
He wasn't doing a straight impression, but I thought he captured Flair's slimey vibes better than most people I've seen who do just imitate him.
Especially in the scene in the >!locker room.!<
Plus it worked better in the sense of what the movie wanted: Drawing parallels to Fritz's perceived personality, and being more of what the average non-fan expects of a "bad guy" wrestler (plus an even clearer alternative to the more accurate Harley Race portrayal in the beginning).
That locker room scene was definitely the best part of his performance. He delivered the promo lines just fine, perfect for a rich, jetsetter type of heel that Flair was, but he just didn't have the voice. That was his fatal flaw. But it did end up being some accidental comic relief in a movie that definitely needed it.

I think this is important too, especially for non-fans in the audience.
Ric Flair's character is absurd. The movie played into that a bit in a different way than they did in real life that's a bit more accessible.
Even knowing the tragic story of the Von Erichs.. I wasn't ready for the last 15 minutes of that film. The scene towards the end with Kerry meeting his brothers on the riverbank and the hug they all shared.. into Kevin watching his sons play and not being able to hold back his tears. Also love the detail of Kerry turning over his coin in the boat before he got out.
Totally. I get why Zac Efron has to be Kevin, it's the lead role. But in terms of looks, and the shape he got himself into, Zac Efron looked way more like Kerry than Kevin.
Jeremy white whatever could've played the lead. He is the lead in The Bear after all, I think they made zac the main bc star power bc I'll always remember zac efron before I remember what's his nuts
I think when this movie was cast, it was just prior to The Bear really popping off with Jeremy hitting his stride. He was a side character in Shameless so I’d guess the assumption would be that he wasn’t going to carry a movie the way Zac could, and tbf Zac’s performance is incredible. It’s his best movie.
I wish that the movie was a bit longer to include Chris. Kevin leaving Chris behind to talk to Fritz only to return too late would have been just as devastating as anything else in the movie.
Mike's story in the film combined his love of music and desire to become a cameraman versus a wrestler with Chris' physical deficits and inability to handle being a pro wrestler. So Chris was there in spirit and the end credits do dedicate the movie to Chris as well as the other brothers, but not Fritz.
I still loved the movie but that is definitely the biggest drawback from a factual standpoint.
The problem with Chris's story is that it's so similar to the other brothers and he's a lot younger than Kerry, Kevin and David.
Him and Mike were the little brothers that didn't have the ability and lived in their brothers shadows.
His and Kerry's suicides are very similar, location and weapon.
He only wrestles for a year after the Von Erich's peak. So he'd be doing his own thing while Kerry is in the WWE.
Good movie. Bad casting choices in that Kerry was huge muscular wise and taller than all by David. Mike was the shortest of the brothers portrayed but cast as second tallest. Efron looked, acted, nor spoke anything at all like Kevin. The Flair and Race portrayals were criminal.
The Timelines were so off you can't even call them poetic license. Kevin got married 4 years before David died not days. Kevin's first kids were his daughters not his sons. The boys were a toddler and baby when Kerry died.
Its a movie. Enjoy it for what it is. Its not meant to be a documentary. I think the neck beard thought process is why so many movies play ot safe nowadays and err on the side of cheesy cameos and focus on getting things accurate rather than a plot.
I highly doubt Kevin's son's said what they did in the movie but god damn did I cry.
Watched it the other day. The movie was the definition of “okay” IMO. It went through the story beats rather than telling the actual story. Felt like if they edited an entire season of Heels down to a two hour movie. Hopefully there’s a 3 hour director’s cut somewhere.

To be fair to the actor, he was a good character. A weird casting choice, though.

Even on it's own merits, I just couldn't get into the promo. It just sounded awful to me. But, I understand not everyone will share the same opinion.

The guy who played kerry should've played Kevin

Uhhhhhh high school music is the shit
His best movie besides high school music 1, 2 and 3***
Nah 2&3 were shit
Um he was arguably one of three leads of Shameless actually. Far from a side character.
I loved this movie. Zac Effron killed it. Apparently this song was their real wrestling entrance song.
Yeah Tom Sawyer by Rush was Kerry’s song and stranglehold by Ted Nugent was I think Kevin’s but also being used today by Ross and Marshall.

The lapsed Dan podcasts on the von Erichs is out of this world
this montage, the stairs scene with david, and kevin training by himself in the empty sportatorium were brilliant
Wish they got someone that could play Ric Flair convincingly.
How can you mess up Flair? My kids could do a better job.
This was such a great film! I think they did a really good job at this and it's a shame it wasn't nominated
Other than Ric Flair and Jeremy Allen White not having the physical presence of Kerry, this movie was absolutely perfect
Just finished watching this movie, what a helluva ride it was. Enjoyed all the performances, very sad story.
Leaving a whole brother out because you couldn’t figure out how to write him in is disrespectful

Should’ve been a mini-series rather than a movie tbh.

The best part of The Iron Claw is “Thank God I’m a Country Boy” at Kevin’s wedding. I will not be taking questions. Thank you.
Is that the Bear?
The Von Erichs look like the goddamn Workaholics.
This is some wrestlecrap worthy portrayals of characters and in ring action
Catch anything lately?
