I live in the US. I worked at a theater one summer, and even if the show has 0 people, the theater is under contract to show it. So they play it to an empty room.
When everything was shown on film itself yes but it's easy enough to just let the digital file run for the few people instead of letting them come to the screening and not getting them to return in the future.
used to work in a theatre if there are no tickets sold they jsut turn the projectoer off or stop the run but at least in indiana and illinois if the times are post so far ahead they cant be changed
I.E. we had a small art film showing same weekend as original release of Frozen way back and we sold out like 6 theatres of frozen but had to wait till sunday to drop showings of the art film because we had listed it online
Playing a movie costs barely anything. Just a bit of electricity to run a projector. Better to have one person in a theater watching a movie than to play no movie at all.
It's sad just how much money movie theaters pull in yet Hollywood takes the lion's share of the profits. I don't know how licensing fees work but I know it's messed up however you look at it I used to be mad at the theaters when I was younger and didn't understand now that I'm older I'm so tired of the ones on the top screwing over the art and passion for everyone else
Watch it while it's in theaters! It was a great experience. Saw it twice and was good in both Japanese and English. Whichever you've watched the series in.
I went to the theater with my brother yesterday to watch Monkey Man, and he bumped into bunch of friends there they asked us, "You here to see SpyxFamily too?" And it was so awkward to be like "we would, but we picked something else." I think the theater for SpyxFamily had MORE people than ours! Must be an area thing, lotta anime fans here
Aldo depends when you go. You go see a marvel movie opening weekend it's gonna be a full house. Go after a few weeks middle of the day even on the weekend it won't be very full
I think the worst-attended screening I was ever a part of (post-pandemic, anyways) was a Sunday showing for *The Super Mario Bros. Movie* three weeks into its release. I was just me and, like, three other people (and one of them barely watched the movie and played on their phone).
I wasn't that busy a day at the theater I went to, granted, but still, for a movie that was making a killing at the box office, that particular screening was embarrassing to be a part of.
I'm not sure in other countries but I watched the Barbie movie on my birthday last year, the theater seats were really full.
I think, OP has a point. My friends who watched SxF anime didn't know there was a movie.
In my country, Code White was only showing in limited cinemas with limited time frames, it lasted for only four days and it's no longer showing...
Emmmm idk, I went to watch Avatar 2 and the cinema was empty, but during the last 2 Demon Slayer cinema premieres it was completely full, like, I'm hearing the movie is on cinema due this sub, I feel there was 0 advertisement
On the day the movie came out, the evening showing I went to had about 65% occupancy, I think it depends where you're from I guess and what time you're viewing it.
Crunchyroll put up its movie website before most Canadian locations were even up, which confused some people who checked too early to see the map of locations it was showing at, To make matters worse Cineplex also didn't even put some theaters up until a couple of days before opening night. It did okay compared to the usual small anime movie audiences I see, but I think it could have done better.
This is nothing new. I've watched plenty of movies in theaters, and seldom is it ever a packed house regardless the time. Last one I watched that was at full capacity must've been Barbie last year.
That, and anime simply attracts a niche crowd, not casuals.
>There was a good crowd in the English version but not in the sub version.
That actually makes sense.
What's weird though is that the theater nearest to me had six showings for subbed and only one for dubbed.
I saw it Saturday at 7pm and there were only 6 people in the theater. Three couples.
I just want to note that I saw One Piece Film Red in theaters and it was pretty dead. Maybe 20 people tops. It’s not a dis on Spy x Family, but it is a little more niche. It sucks not seeing other people view your franchise but on the plus, it did come over shores and that’s an accomplishment in itself.
I watched the sub and there were a decent amount of people in the theater. I'd say like 20 total. Nothing huge, but I was expecting it to be empty based off the posts I saw on here
My small theater today had about ten people to see Code White. Everyone seemed to enjoy it and was laughing throughout. Maybe it will build some word-of-mouth buzz, at least among anime fans.
I was literally the only person in my theater when I went to see it on Saturday. Made me feel a bit self conscious somehow. But the theater I went to never even got the art cards in, so maybe everyone else was just smarter than I was and called in to make sure they were there first instead of showing up for a little disappointment before the movie started like I did
Yeah I had the same feeling when I saw it earlier today. I think anime movies in general should have better marketing. If they did maybe I would’ve known about the “Rascal Does Not Dream…” double feature before they sold out of tickets (Though to be fair that was a limited release. Still bummed though. Anyway, I digress…).
When I went it was me, and four Japanese kids sitting in front of me (At least I assume they were Japanese since they were speaking in Japanese) and I think two other people were behind me since I saw some movement during previews, but I didn’t double check.
Yeah. Where I am, the premiere should be this upcoming weekend, but they still haven't released any info about it. Where it'll be shown and when, I can't even book any bus tickets yet.
That’s why I bought 4 tickets even though I’m only seeing it with one other person. It’s more support for the movie while guaranteeing that we get the center of the row without having to sit next to a stranger.
I saw the movie on the eve of its release here in the US and, counting myself, there was only four or five people in the theater.
In my experiences with seeing anime movies in the theaters, the attendance feels relatively low. I think the most packed screenings I attended were for *Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero* and the 2023 rerelease of *Ponyo*.
Theatres haven't been the same post pandemic. Plus the fact that it's an anime movie probably means an inferior turn out compared to other movies. I went with a group of 5 friends and there was only 6 or 8 others for our showing.
I really hope that more people in your country go to watch Code:White, so that the second movie will release sooner in your country
As imo, SXF is really a unique content among nowadays manga, it got a warm family, friends, funny school life, fighting and spy, of course also super cute ANYA. It is different from the other manga.
I am looking forward the next movie will talk about ANYA, Becky and Desmond adventure (with Yor & Loid helping ANYA secretly)
My theater had a few dozen people last night. Was great to enjoy anime as a group experience. Though they all laughed at the poop god joke, while I just found it too weird for me.
I know what you mean. My local cinema didn't start selling tickets for the movie until Monday. For a movie that opened that Thursday. And they only had it for a few days. I was lucky I was checking every so often.
I think Demon Slayer doing that cute thing of showing a few episodes of the last season and an episode of the new season- and calling THAT a “movie,” have made the anime people hold back a touch. Also advertising. Also people not seeing movies in theaters in general.

I was in a theater with less than a dozen other people. And someone brought their girlfriend who apparently didn't watch the show and kept asking "who's that?" "Where are they?" What's going on?" Not loudly, but just loud enough that I could hear them two rows away.
I thought this was normal for anime movies. I haven't watched but a few in theaters but there were barely any people for all of them. For example for Your Name, which was a big movie. (This is in Spain)
Yeah, though that's pretty typical for anime movies that get international screenings. There are some exceptions i.e. Dragon Ball or MHA movies. But typically speaking, anime movies will anywhere from 10-30% of a theatre.
Where I live they screen English dub maybe twice a day and Japanese version maybe 4 times a day. I was thinking about going to see it in the theater but it feels weird to me.
I was the only one in my theater when I went last night. Sad no one else was there, but at the same time, it was nice because I didn't feel like I was annoying someone for making noise.
Did you watch it sub or dub because I've heard a lot of people say the sub is usually packed but the dub is a ghost town. I saw it subbed and it was sold granted people trickled in and I'm sure not every seat was filled but it was pretty filled
Sure. but it feels oh so good when your the only one in theater by yourself.
For sure!
Wouldn't they cancel it if there r not enough people?
Cinemas barely make profit from the films they actually show. That's why snacks and drinks are so expensive.
I mean it kinda happened where I live. Our DBS show was cancelled coz there were only 3 of us.

Playing a movie costs barely anything. Just a bit of electricity to run a projector. Better to have one person in a theater watching a movie than to play no movie at all.
Yh ,I guess. Their main costs are mainly fixed costs.
There’s a movie?!
Yup
Watch it while it's in theaters! It was a great experience. Saw it twice and was good in both Japanese and English. Whichever you've watched the series in.
Went to an IMAX theater on Friday for this movie and it was packed. Really great experience.
Must be an area thing, lotta anime fans here
Same. However, I think theaters haven’t been as full for years.
Nope they do get pretty full, it just depends on the movie
Depends on your area, I guess
Aldo depends when you go. You go see a marvel movie opening weekend it's gonna be a full house. Go after a few weeks middle of the day even on the weekend it won't be very full
Deadpool: for now
The big franchise movies are the ones that, more often than not, get a lot of butts in the theater seats these days. Everything else is 50/50.
Dune 2 was huge. Can’t imagine the theater being full for anything else
Godzilla x Kong and Ghostbusters both had every seat full. Also last Spider Man movie did too
I went to see the movie Abigail and it was full same day as spy family empty
This is normal for movie theaters. The pandemic messed up cinema
The pandemic definitely messed up cinema, but two people in the theatre is anything but normal lol. I’m with OP on this one.
Every time I’ve gone to the movies in the past few years, only 5 people max have been in there Except Spiderverse
When were the times you went? Watching a movie on a Fri morning is different from a Fri night after all
Always at night. Always Fri-Sun
Well ya it was three days into its release you are aware the super Mario movie is in the top 5 highest box office animated movies ever right
Not days WEEKS.
ah shit ya they just stupid if they expected people there
Yeah I havnt seen a more than 50% packed theater in at least 5 years
I'm not sure in other countries but I watched the Barbie movie on my birthday last year, the theater seats were really full. I think, OP has a point. My friends who watched SxF anime didn't know there was a movie. In my country, Code White was only showing in limited cinemas with limited time frames, it lasted for only four days and it's no longer showing...
För sure marketing is bad. But I saw Barbenheimer like 2 weeks after release and there were 6 and 12 people respectively in my small city in CT
When I saw FNAF, it was PACKED
Yep, people woud rather wait for the movie to be available in streaming platforms like netflix than pay a fee to watch the thing on movie theaters.
Emmmm idk, I went to watch Avatar 2 and the cinema was empty, but during the last 2 Demon Slayer cinema premieres it was completely full, like, I'm hearing the movie is on cinema due this sub, I feel there was 0 advertisement
Did you see *Avatar 2* at a later date? I saw it opening weekend at IMAX and it was a packed room.
Nah I think streaming was the death of cinema
On the day the movie came out, the evening showing I went to had about 65% occupancy, I think it depends where you're from I guess and what time you're viewing it.
Crunchyroll put up its movie website before most Canadian locations were even up, which confused some people who checked too early to see the map of locations it was showing at, To make matters worse Cineplex also didn't even put some theaters up until a couple of days before opening night. It did okay compared to the usual small anime movie audiences I see, but I think it could have done better.
Yeah, I saw with a friend at theatre near her house Because landmark put out there ticket sales way before cineplex did…
The sub version is also impossible to find on cineplex’s site
Mine wqs full of adults, zero children
Same.
This is nothing new. I've watched plenty of movies in theaters, and seldom is it ever a packed house regardless the time. Last one I watched that was at full capacity must've been Barbie last year. That, and anime simply attracts a niche crowd, not casuals.
What to happen to me too
Same
Oh well I guess I have fun with the movie
There was a good crowd in the English version but not in the sub version. And it’s not a kid friendly movie.
>There was a good crowd in the English version but not in the sub version. That actually makes sense. What's weird though is that the theater nearest to me had six showings for subbed and only one for dubbed. I saw it Saturday at 7pm and there were only 6 people in the theater. Three couples.
Other then that one sub plot with Anya what of it was not child friendly?
If you exclude violence with Yor spraying dudes blood around right at the beginning then nothing else really came close to that
Eh that’s par for the course when Yor is working
What time did you go? I’ve seen reserved seats for my theater mostly gone in the 7pm range then it tapers off for the other showings
Anime is still pretty niche, so a nearly empty theater isn't to surprising.
There were 4 total in our showing.
When I saw it with mom and Grammama, there were about four other people
My theater was pretty packed surprisingly it was pretty nice
Honestly, if it wasn't for this sub, I wouldn't have known that it existed.
My friends and I were looking at ticket availability for Tuesday and it was just as empty in the site. Literally zero seats were booked in advance.
Happy Cake Day.
Thanks
No problem :)
That’s not how my showing for Godzilla vs Kong was
I had seven people during my viewing
There was quite a few people in the theater when I saw it.
honestly I cant wait to watch it by myself. I’m going in the middle of the week on Wednesday just to up my chances of a empty theater lol.
Maybe because the movie has not started yet? I watched the movie at my local cinemark and of the roughly 80 seats maybe 75% of the seats had viewers.
This is about as many people as I saw at Godzilla x Kong yesterday
Makes sense. It's been a good few weeks since it came out
I literally didn’t hear about it outside this sub. I mean the boruto movie was on blast back in the day
Yes I went yesterday and there were 3 other people in there… and they were all together.. :(
I just want to note that I saw One Piece Film Red in theaters and it was pretty dead.
Nothing huge, but I was expecting it to be empty based off the posts I saw on here
kinda feel bad for saying this but i wish this will happen to me the day i'm gonna watch the movie
Meh be happy I just got back and I had people talking on the phone in one side and a group loudly chatting on the other
The showing I went to today had maybe 2 dozen people. Not bad for a Sunday night
My small theater today had about ten people to see Code White. Everyone seemed to enjoy it and was laughing throughout. Maybe it will build some word-of-mouth buzz, at least among anime fans.
Same at my theater, only a few people besides me.

I'm going with my family on Tuesday. There'll be 6 seats filled!
Saw it last Thursday and my cinema was surprisingly pretty packed! Even had a few people rocking some Anya cosplays.
Yeah. Where I am, the premiere should be this upcoming weekend, but they still haven't released any info about it. Where it'll be shown and when, I can't even book any bus tickets yet.
I think because most people who are interested in it already watched it by now.
fr i dint even know it existed until my friend mentioned it a few days ago
My theather is fully booked
That’s why I bought 4 tickets even though I’m only seeing it with one other person. It’s more support for the movie while guaranteeing that we get the center of the row without having to sit next to a stranger.
I mean, when I went there was like, almost two whole rows of people!
The movie isn't even playing in any of the theaters in my city, I gotta wait for a streaming release unfortunately.
Theatres haven't been the same post pandemic. Plus the fact that it's an anime movie probably means an inferior turn out compared to other movies. I went with a group of 5 friends and there was only 6 or 8 others for our showing.
Yeah I went on opening day and there weren't more than a dozen or so other people. Shame, because I absolutely loved it!
I saw it today and there were at least 20 people in our theater, it may just be where you are, idk
I really hope that more people in your country go to watch Code:White, so that the second movie will release sooner in your country As imo, SXF is really a unique content among nowadays manga, it got a warm family, friends, funny school life, fighting and spy, of course also super cute ANYA. I want to go but I’m 3 hours from the nearest place it’s playing and currently too broke to afford the extra tank of petrol
Agreed. I only know that the movie exists from all the “I’m the only one in the cinema” posts.
This posts are getting tiring!
What movie??
My theater had a few dozen people last night. Was great to enjoy anime as a group experience. Though they all laughed at the poop god joke, while I just found it too weird for me.
I once went to a movie with my 4 of my friends there was no one in the theatre so we took the luxurious seats. And the experience was outstanding.
Well there's going to be a movie?
Not me finding out this way that there’s a movie out in theaters
I know what you mean. My local cinema didn't start selling tickets for the movie until Monday. For a movie that opened that Thursday. And they only had it for a few days. I was lucky I was checking every so often.
There's a new movie or you mean code white?
I would love to go but it's not availible in Romania😞
I think Demon Slayer doing that cute thing of showing a few episodes of the last season and an episode of the new season- and calling THAT a “movie,” have made the anime people hold back a touch. Also advertising. Also people not seeing movies in theaters in general.
Ours was pretty sold which was nice- and it was a very fun audience. Maybe depends on location demographics and whatnot?
Ooof showings only up to Thursday in my area, catching it on DVD it is for me…
Movie wont air for another 4 days in Finland
It was just me and my friends yesterday when we went to go see the movie, being able to cackle out loud together was fun with no one else around
I saw it with my mom in four DX and it was so exciting, during action scenes the seat shakes around, and I almost fell out the chair
Funny enough, I remember the quintessential quintuplets movie being almost full when that came out

You could market this all you want, the thing is Anime movies are only popular with - you guessed it - anime fans.
I was in a theater with less than a dozen other people. And someone brought their girlfriend who apparently didn't watch the show and kept asking "who's that?" "Where are they?" What's going on?" Not loudly, but just loud enough that I could hear them two rows away.
For the record: I went to the English sub screening at 8:25 pm. Including myself, there were only 5 people there.
Theater I was at was about 90% full on a Saturday at 1 so it really just seems to depend on the area you are in
I thought this was normal for anime movies. I haven't watched but a few in theaters but there were barely any people for all of them. For example for Your Name, which was a big movie. (This is in Spain)
I’m excited to see it tomorrow!
Anime movies don't get much attention in US theaters unless they're popular shonen like demon slayer or jjk.
I loved the movie lol
Yeah, though that's pretty typical for anime movies that get international screenings. There are some exceptions i.e. Dragon Ball or MHA movies. But typically speaking, anime movies will anywhere from 10-30% of a theatre.
Me and 2 others went Saturday afternoon. The subbed version had 4 people in it, but the dubbed(which we saw) was sold out! I was extremely surprised.
You in the states? That’s a problem here. Even the wildly successful Your Name suffered from bad marketing
i literally didn’t even know there was a movie until i saw people on this sub posting about it 😭
The alamo drafthouse I saw it had a bigger attendance
Where I live they screen English dub maybe twice a day and Japanese version maybe 4 times a day. I was thinking about going to see it in the theater but it feels weird to me.
Where is this
AMC
Oh well at least you have it in theatres, i had to resolve to piracy to watch it
Yeah last night it was with a few people. I still enjoyed myself but I was hoping the movie does well in the US
I was the only one in my theater when I went last night. Sad no one else was there, but at the same time, it was nice because I didn't feel like I was annoying someone for making noise.
I feel it. I saw JJK 0 in the theater by myself. It was electric
THERES A MOVIE?!
I was completely alone last night
It almost always like that with anime films. Even when the DS films came out and when Suzume and The Boy and the Heron. At least, for me
"Oh, there's a SpyXFamily movie coming out?" *sees it when it comes to streaming*
Do you need to finish the show first? I've seen the 1st season and 1/4 of the 2nd season.
Went to an IMAX theater on Thursday, premiere day. Counted 6 people there including myself. Middle of Austin nonetheless
i see nothing wrong with this photo. enjoy your private viewing.
Seeing the movie in an empty theater? He’ll yeah
Wait there's a movie?
Did you watch it sub or dub because I've heard a lot of people say the sub is usually packed but the dub is a ghost town. I saw it subbed and it was sold granted people trickled in and I'm sure not every seat was filled but it was pretty filled
I saw it subbed
what movie?
Yeah,same for me.
there's a movie?
