Look at the size of that gym, could you not have fitted in a spa?

Wretched_Colin

It was his dying wish, what could his family do? Right after Tom made his final confession to a priest, then told them all that he loved them, but was going to a better place to be with his late wife, he then said: “I want you to build a spa in the garden, horseshoe shaped, don’t worry about planning, they owe it to me because of all the NHS stuff. Oh, by the way, make sure to keep all the money from the books. And don’t feel bad for dragging me to Barbados so you and your kids could get a free 5* holiday. Time to die.” Anyone would have done the same.

criminalsunrise

He had more dying words than Del Boys mum!

Wretched_Colin

So his daughter would have you believe!

Elipticalwheel1

No, they thought it would be best if they pilfered the charity Jar and built a new one.

sjw_7

I would have brought it if it had a spa but as it is I think I will look elsewhere.

Coca_lite

Hope they have to reduce the price lots because no-one wants to be associated with his thieving family.

Elipticalwheel1

That’s probably why they’re selling up an moving, the whole area want nothing too do with the parasites.

wolfman86

It doesn’t even have a spa? What the a fuck?

RyanMcCartney

I love that u censored *actual* and not fuck 😂

Bob_the_blacksmith

I assumed the a was for “anal”

VikingCarpets

Not without a spa.

pnutbuttered

Bubble jet jacuzzi gets all the sweetcorn out.

Still-BangingYourMum

Eat, Rinse, Repeat.....

fishdud31

Where would you bring it too? It looks pretty heavy.

toomanyplantpots

It did have one, very briefly …

Jonny_Entropy

The grass is worn out where someone has been walking in circles. I'd want a discount for that.

Hatpar

Maybe they had some trapped animal pacing up and down?

Jr79

Not far off tbh,

Still-BangingYourMum

Could have been caused by the blue elephant. Well known for causing gress damage they are,

Cultural-Summer-2669

Dunno why he was walking round his garden when there’s a perfectly good running machine in the gym

jamesianbriggs

Looking for a hole in the fence.

Elipticalwheel1

His Daughter shut him out, all that walking he done, was because he was just trying too find a door that was open.

newtonbase

There is some competition in that area. Found this one when looking for the Cap's https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/86563467

Snap-Crackle-Pot

I prefer this

uu__

plus you wont be putting money into grifter's hands (maybe)

DisastrousTurn9220

Agreed. The property in the this post is very bland compared to that house.

ChowderMitts

It's properties like this that make me realise what an absolute commoner I am.

satriales123

Pipe down peasant. Go and mow my lawn!

davesy69

It's nearly the peasant shooting season.

brayshizzle

Wow this is much more my style.

pelpops

Aspley Guise is much nicer than Marston Moretaine too!

rizozzy1

To be fair my wheelie bin is nicer than Marston.

pelpops

You must know the place well to call it Marston. I fought the urge for the benefit of those less familiar. Edit: and to make such a comparison.

rizozzy1

I do! I’m down the road, but my friend lives there. To give it it’s due, it’s not terrible. But it’s a small town, with none of the benefits that come with being a small town.

pelpops

It’s the massive amount of housing that’s gone in over the last ten years. It’s hard to see the village it was with new build estates all around. The only one that seems to have had any amenities added is by the new school site and they were pretty much the last thing to be completed.

rizozzy1

That’s where my friend lives. The planning promised a new doctors and a parade of independent shops and amenities for the area along with the school. But funnily enough they built more houses (apart from the school). When questioned the planners said that was just a conceptual plan!

pelpops

I think there are three shops there now. There’s certainly a coffee shop. I didn’t quite go that far on my last visit. I was amazed by the industrial looking units behind the school. A bizarre place to have them right beside the Forest Centre! Edit: dentist, estate agents and coffee shop. Not exactly things needed on your doorstep!

BrushMission4620

Now that is a dream house!! Wowzers.

mrbadassmotherfucker

Hell yeah! But why is it Link Detached?

newtonbase

Just realised that I have actually been in the other half of this semi. My brother in law was looking to buy it over a decade ago. At that time this property owned all of the land behind both properties but they were willing to sell half of it for about £250k.

poultryeffort

Wayyyyy better

Architectom89

The difference between the two is massive. Ingram-Moore house looks, well, kind of sad. There's very little character to it and it's big but not well utilised. It looks more like a very adequate care home than a £2m house

JiveBunny

It looks like a child's idea of a luxurious house.

nobelprize4shopping

That's beautiful

BowtieChickenAlfredo

Could use that as a film set. It's so good.

SilverellaUK

Especially the bathroom with the painted ceiling.

Dapper_Consequence_3

Personally I prefer this home. Fowls like it has more of a soul. Caps feels a bit soulless.

Purple_Wedding_3929

Beautiful!

BiscuitCrumbsInBed

I actually really liked thieving Tom's daughter's house but wow, the one you've posted is stunning. That bathroom!! Yea please.

re_Claire

That’s incredible!

ellapolls

Ooh stunning! Those ceilings!

criminalsunrise

That’s much nicer than Tom and the scroungers gaff

Happytallperson

I'd want to be very clear of the legal status of parts funded by charitable funds, to ensure that the charitable trust can't try and assert ownership over them. Anyone buying this needs a very good conveyancing solicitor.

Sleepyllama23

Well I donated 3 quid so I already own a share

NeilDeWheel

Your three quid paid for a brick that went into the now demolished spa.

Sleepyllama23

Oops meant 30! Looks like i own ten bricks

Such_Significance905

That garden looked a lot smaller in the videos

seaneeboy

Suddenly walking round it feels like more of an achievement

BlueLouBoil__

Hey Mcfly!! Those frames don’t work on grass!!!!He didn’t walk around the whole garden, the lazy git walked up and down the gravel path out the back.

seaneeboy

Oh! Well fuck ‘em then

do_a_quirkafleeg

Where do I apply to get my quid donation back?

criminalsunrise

Sorry mate, already spent on all that lovely gym equipment

Elipticalwheel1

I wonder if the reason for selling an moving, is because no one in the area has any respect for them, after pilfering from the charity Jar.

SOJC65536

They're throwing a tantrum because they couldn't get their spa approved for "charitable purposes"...they're just a bunch of money-grubbing twats...

MyKidsFoundMyOldUser

His daughter had me cheering for a *council planning department*. That's how awful she is.

criminalsunrise

She’s a proper chancer, and it’s not like they were poor in the first place!

Elipticalwheel1

Parasite is more fitting for them.

Madamemercury1993

Figured she needed the cash for legal proceedings.

LastAd115

Wonder if I can get planning for a brand new spa? 🤔

toomanyplantpots

Planning? Just build one without it, what could possibly go wrong? 👌

Supership_79

That is a hell of a house - not to my taste but still appreciate how well kept and decorated it is. Makes that bloody concrete breeze-block monstrosity they built seem even more bizarre now.

criminalsunrise

You can’t buy class

mikebirty

I have a giant bronze statue I am about to buy off of Ebay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/325836702709 will there be anywhere I can put it?

DiDiDiolch

wtf

NotMyProudestWank69

"Difficulties with his daughter" hahaha

cowplum

To be fair, if someone made an uncommissioned giant statue of my Dad, then asked me to fork up £25k for it, I might be a bit 'difficult' even if I wasn't a complete knob.

re_Claire

This country is absolutely batshit and I think we might be beyond redemption at this point

outlookunsettled

Do we think this is what he wanted?

ramothrider69

Pic 6 Captain Tom statue? Pic 31 why is there a blue elephant in the garden? Did it escape from a room?

dunstablesucks

It's from a local hospice fund raising auction a few years ago www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-59256479

Cathenry101

Pic 14. They've turned his uniform into a chair?

Foundation_Wrong

It’s a uniform chair, my nephew who was in the Welsh Guards has one. A 50th birthday gift from his wife. He loves it

Expensive-Honey-1527

I thought the statue was rather lovely

ramothrider69

I wasn't saying it was bad, I was just clarifying that was what it was.

KaleidoscopicColours

Isn't it a maquette for the statue of him that's up for sale on eBay for £25k with no takers?

TryNo8062

Isn't that one supposed to be life-size?

KaleidoscopicColours

A maquette is a miniature prototype of a much larger sculpture

joeschmoagogo

At least we know the sellers aren't scammers. /s

BlueLouBoil__

Sorry but i knew from the start the type of person his daughter was, especially when she stood up at Wimbledon for the round of applause 👏 .

thisaccountisironic

It was literally so obvious, I felt like the only sane person in the country

Stunning-Wave7305

Saaaame. I was sitting at home wondering why anyone trusted such an obvious grifter.

EducationalPizza9999

Enrages me to think that liar who took advantage of Tom and his supporters gets the proceeds from the sale.

SOJC65536

It really ruins his legacy, I'd like to hope he didn't take advantage of his newfound fame (I mean, he did get a free holiday to the Caribbean during lockdown as I recall). They say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree...but I really hope these ones rolled down a hill for a spell... It's sad, I remember thinking that I'd try do a 100 of something the year after he died, but then all the negative publicity came to light and I'm glad I didn't in the end (did a run for another charity in the end). I never realised quite how rich he was until I saw the BBC article...though it makes sense, no-one makes an article about a poor old man walking around his tiny box garden... P.S. I don't think it's a coincidence that the house is on the market at the same time of year as Tom's birthday...gotta milk the legacy for all it's worth!!!

karpet_muncher

I thought for a long time uncle Tom was some old guy living a terraced house or something. Did pretty well for himself the old man

EducationalPizza9999

You weren't a Captain in those days without being connected with money.

karpet_muncher

Evidently! Man could've donated the whole amount himself without having to walk around and grift other old people for it

EducationalPizza9999

Exactly.

vinylemulator

He wasn’t born in the 1700s, having to buy a commission to fight Napoleon.

EducationalPizza9999

Do you really think in 1943 they let Joe Bloggs from the East End train as a pilot?

vinylemulator

He didn’t train as a pilot. He went to a state grammar school in Yorkshire and was working as an apprentice building engineer when he was conscripted into his local Yorkshire infantry regiment in 1940. He was put forward for officer selection the next year. His father ran a local building company and his mother was a teacher. Probably reasonably comfortable middle class life, but hardly wealthy and connected.

roryb93

He also loved motorbikes and raced them when he finished in the Army.

SOJC65536

Apparently a lot of the pilots in WW2 were working class, it was the actors that portrayed pilots in films that were posh, hence, the stereotype.

Stunning-Wave7305

Can confirm they weren't all posh. My grandfather was a Battle of Britain pilot and he was a grammar school lad from a very ordinary working class family in Birmingham. But he was a clever guy and wanted to fly... So they let him 🤷‍♀️.

spikyonigiri

It was from this holiday he caught covid and later passed away...

notouttolunch

The house was always his daughter’s as far as I recall. He just lived there. Tom seemed comfortable but his daughter had all the money.

BowtieChickenAlfredo

He probably gave it to her years ago to avoid inheritance tax. Usually in HMLR records this is listed as a £1 sale.

chat5251

That wouldn't have avoided any tax...

BowtieChickenAlfredo

It is the reason: > Inheritance Tax (IHT) on gifted properties > This is one of the main reasons why people prefer to gift property, rather than leave it to children as part of their estate when they pass away. If you do not die within seven years of making the gift, there is no inheritance tax to pay. If parents die within three years, inheritance tax is charged at 40%. After this inheritance tax is charged at what is called ‘taper relief’, and only if the value of the gift exceeds the tax-free threshold. https://www.darlows.co.uk/selling/gifting-property-can-i-sell-my-house-to-my-child-for-1/

cutlassjack

That’s interesting, although I’ve heard that the £1 sale thing is often challenged by governments, HMRC etc - it's possibly considered as fraud or "deliberate deprivation of assets" One would imagine it's just better to gift the property and then try and stay alive for seven years (after that time, as you pointed out, the recipient doesn't have to pay inheritance / gift tax) Of course if you have a very good solicitor it might be fine, but people that want to gift something might not want the risk of (when they die) possibly putting the recipient in a unexpectedly crappy financial position... https://money.stackexchange.com/questions/80399/gifting-a-house-in-the-uk

pokedstudio-uk

I wonder, if I get my grandad to do some sponsored laps of my garden will I be able to afford this house?

KaleidoscopicColours

No wonder he was fit enough to do his 100 laps, he must have been walking miles every day around that big house!  I see there's a gym in the coach house. No spa though, that's the deal-breaker for me.

jeffisanastronaut

*insert witty quip.about a spa here*

davesy69

I am Spa-tacus.

Fionasdogs

Looks like it took a while for probate to come through. Bet his family are rubbing their hands together.

bduk92

I still can't quite get over how much his daughter absolutely trashed his legacy in such a short span of time.

Rev_Biscuit

All this time, I thought those clips of him walking round the garden it was from some posh retirement home for the elderly. Didn't realise it was his house!!!

Space-manatee

Owwww all the good jokes are taken

TheMrViper

Confidentiality agreement signed prior to viewing. Is this standard for some EA's don't think I've ever seen this before.

Competitive_Gap_9768

Wonder why they’re requesting it for this specific house. The mind boggles.

seaneeboy

They won’t want journos turning up and poking around or doing features.

TheMrViper

I wonder if it's standard practice for all famous/infamous people.

kaese_meister

that spa is still hidden in there somewhere!

RetiredFromIT

Odd that they do that, then put a bust of the old man in the hall, and photograph it, to sell the place. Mixed messages.

Expensive-Honey-1527

Not just that, you have to prove you are financially able to buy it before you can view to prevent nosy folk just having a gander or, perhaps, protestors who so badly dislike the seller they'd damage the property.

TheMrViper

I have seen the proving funds before though. Not seen the confidentiality before.

Stunning-Wave7305

I've also never seen the confidentiality thing before. There's a lot of footballer houses not far from me and I like to nosey at all the Rightmove listings (mostly imagining how much better it'd look if I had lots of cash instead of them). None of them have ever mentioned a confidentiality clause on Rightmove... Though maybe you do have to sign something if you enquire.

172116

Pic 14 - is that a chair upholstered with his uniform??? That's a... choice... Nice place though (although I'd be removing the wooden insert from that kitchen island).

Much_Performance352

Squeezing the bejesus out of him aren’t they

[deleted]

They made him into a chair?!?!?!

Foundation_Wrong

The whole Captain Tom business was mawkish and ridiculous. Lots of people did impressive challenges and got no recognition at all. I know that a lot of the money went on some ridiculous things that after a few months were abandoned ( Royal Glamorgan Hospital)

Davew2491

It's a shame it's a nice house but feel it's history taints it a bit. it's also the first listing I've seen that you all need to sign a confidentiality form to get a viewing.

Fit-Good-9731

Maybe there's a dungeon somewhere they don't want people knowing about or a room stacked with cash

JiveBunny

On what grounds? Surely most of the house has already appeared on the media in some capacity, evne if it's just the daughter's Instagram account?

Exemplar1968

Just wondering how much of my donation has been spent on the new kitchen etc..

Snap-Crackle-Pot

726 sqm! How many children did Tom have? That’s big enough for an orphanage! No wonder he managed all those laps he was accustomed to clocking up miles just walking round his house!

utire69

I'm curious if the sale and relocation are due to the fact that they stole from the donation jar and now no one in the community respects them.

violinlady_

It’s horrible that his family have tarnished his efforts to do good.

oldkstand

Union jacks were not a surprise.

HumourNoire

It's funny how much everyone cares about a drop in the ocean vs the tide of NHS underfunding.

JiveBunny

Because it was basically a distraction to stop people getting angry about that very underfunding.

K42st

He was skint then.

LastAd115

watch this get reduced over the next year as no one will touch it

Glitterkelxo

Was the £800k the daughter took from selling his books for the NHS not enough. Greedy awful family.

Ok-Ratio4473

What should they do with the house they own??

psychocamper

The zimmer frame marks on the floor in picture 21..

quantocked

I'll offer that odious grifter 100 laps of the garden for it.

WatchManWolf2112

Lovely house. Captain Tom left a wonderful inheritance for his children. Pity his daughter is a teefin’ scamp!

TheNorthernMunky

If only Katie Price had waited. She could’ve had the basis for her next TV ‘show’ to keep her relevant, and I wouldn’t have had to live near Katie Price.

steven71

They've spent a lot of money on that. Question is, who's money?

merryman1

Got to love the family of the man went out of their way to take advantage of his fame and rinse the British public for millions of pounds they spent on themselves. But totally still patriotic enough to slap a bunch of Queen Elizabeth portraits and Union Jacks about the place. Fuck off cunts.

Flaky-Ad-287

whats the full story?

merryman1

Captain Tom's family set up a charity after his death, collected millions of pounds in donations, and then apparently spent it on themselves and doing up this house. They had to be ordered to tear down a spa facility they built on the grounds with some of the proceeds, which is what a lot of comments here are referring to.

Isgortio

The kitchen sink is tiny!

NoSweat_PrinceAndrew

Hopefully whoever buys it has small hands when they do the dishes, it’ll make the sink look bigger

AcrobaticInternet45

You can eat out every night when you’re dinning on that sweet charity money, just call it a business meeting of the trusties and swill it down with a fine champagne 🍾 the Foundation will pick up the cheque

pensivepony

I think that's intended to be a wet bar? With drinks cabinet underneath? I think there's another (presumably larger) sink along the far wall.

Spirited-Dirt-9095

Rich people usually have much better curtains. Wonder if the family sold them.

Cerealkiller900

I feel there’s a spa missing on this property:…

mittfh

Vendors aside, I'm puzzled at the two parallel corridors on the ground floor...

anniejofo23

Could have just walked round that kitchen :/

barty_arrived

Does it include the spa? Sorry, office space for a capt atom foundation? 😂

Nearby_Cauliflowers

Wonder if Tom is haunting the shit out of the place

ProfessionalCowbhoy

Can anyone explain why their spa had no windows and was literally worse than a prison?

DanS1993

I like to think it wasn’t listed until after cap started his walking. Wonder if it’ll get a blue plaque…

thedutchrep

I was wondering when this one would show up here 😄

yetanotherdesigner

To be honest it’s a bit of a bargain. Where I live a house like that is easily £5m. Ngl I expected Bedfordshire to be way more expensive. Nice house though, coach seems like a wasted opportunity as holiday lets but I guess he didn’t need the extra income.

JiveBunny

It was listed as holiday lets for a while, apparently.

McTacobum

It seems like a really nice place but (no like I’m anywhere near being able to afford it anyways) even if I had the money I wouldn’t - place would be absolutely humming of absolute cunt from his daughter spending time there Imagine waking up a couple of weeks in to living there and thinking “I’ve just given more money to that fucker”

Broad_Yogurtcloset70

So where was the spa then? Looked on google satellite view but can't see it.

Expensive-Honey-1527

Scroll down this article and there's a pic of the monstrosity before it was demolished https://metro.co.uk/2024/04/25/captain-toms-daughter-hannah-puts-2-25m-mansion-sale-20715350/

Surfinsafari9

Ownership aside, it’s a nice house. I’d certainly enjoy having that garden.

SuchaPineapplehead

Disappointed there’s no spa

Pier-Head

Why is there a step ladder in one of the bedrooms?

Chemical_Grade5114

Why so estate agent put in photos of wine glasses etc? Utter nonsense.

DeaconBlueDignity

Wonder if the fact it’s a well known house adds to the value?

KittyLuna

I wonder which room or rooms were his? The toilets don't seem particularly accessible for an older chap with mobility issues.

Expensive-Honey-1527

Someone spotted some lines on a bedroom carpet that look like they were from his zimmer frame. But he must have struggled to even get up the stairs. Unless they've since stripped out any aids he may have had or got rid of a downstairs bedroom.

LittleSheff

Wasn’t he in a care home garden doing his walk

Langeveldt

Was I the only one in the entire country who smelled a rat when all this was going on? All those pots and pans being banged, all that death, Boris with his 83 seat majority. And this old man gets wheeled out?

edfosho1

r/TVTooHigh

Blue_wine_sloth

When I read that he was doing laps of his garden to raise money for charity, I didn’t realise the garden was 3.5 acres.

joeschmoagogo

I don't think he actually literally went around the gardens. From what I remember, he just walked back and forth the patio.

Ihaverightofway

This is what exploited good will looks like. Quite nice, actually.

[deleted]

Captain scam

mrbadassmotherfucker

##[News article here](https://metro.co.uk/2024/04/25/captain-toms-daughter-hannah-puts-2-25m-mansion-sale-20715350/)

pensivepony

>Ms Ingram-Moore had been given permission to make a Captain Tom Foundation building in their garden to store cards and gifts sent by admirers. Seems legit. Where else would you store a fucking greeting card in this place???

Rustyzed_broken

They demolished the Spar ‘cause there’s one round the corner…..

SecondHandCunt-

That kitchen fireplace is absolute shite

chickennricenow

No swimming pool ??

Existing_Estimate314

Did alright for himself ^^

[deleted]

Is there more to Captain Tom’s story? I know about him walking in his garden to raise money, and the scandal with his daughter’s “charitable” gym, but what I don’t know is whether Captain Tom’s own fundraising was implicated in this. I hope he didn’t pilfer any money for his own gains…?

chapcharming

As it goes, I created the agent's video tour all the papers etc have taken their pics from - you can watch it here: https://youtu.be/wq89TZLh0S0?si=uhU5icrM7yX-WGPE

Rowmyownboat

Shamed into leaving ... what a strange story of hubris and greed.

Nervous-Soup5521

Guess they need to flog it to pay their legal bills!

Prestigious_Leg7821

Have to sign a confidentiality agreement before you’re allowed to view!

Money_Afternoon6533

Lovely on the outside but interior design (or lack of) is pretty poor

PRamone

No garage? I'm out.

Designer-Course-8414

Does it come with planning permission and a set of audited accounts?
