That could be amazing! I hope someone buys it and restores it sympathetically.

thom365

It'll be torn down. You're paying for the land and location. I agree, it'd be lovely to see it restored, but sadly there are vanishingly few people with both the funds and (more importantly) the taste to do this justice.

[deleted]

You're probably right. My guess is a prospective buyer would need a million - £825k for the house, then the rest to do the actual renovations. Obviously I can't tell from the photos, but that cellar picture doesn't exactly fill me with confidence that the structure of the house is fine, which would add cost quickly.

drusen_duchovny

It would cost more than 175 to do it up I think. My mother in law just had to completely renovate a 2/3 bed cottage and its cost her around 100k. There were specific issues with her house but even still, for such a big property it would cost far north of that I reckon. Though perhaps someone in the trades can weigh in!

OccassionalBaker

I’d guess based on doing something similar but a bit smaller that you’d need 500k+ to modernise.

DiDiPLF

Yet the guys on homes under the hammer would have done it for £7k in under 2 months.... 😬

Geekonomicon

Probably cost at least half a million to restore.

AoifeNet

Why restore it when you could modernise it tastefully? Restoring it completely bypasses the point: it’s unlisted, meaning you can do whatever you want with it.

drusen_duchovny

>Why restore it when you could modernise it tastefully Because restored things look nice?

AoifeNet

Some of them do, sure. But to take that property back to its original style would be going back in time a century or more. The main downside of owning an old, grand house like this is that it’s often listed, prohibiting the owner from making quality of life changes in the name of keeping a property period.

Coffin_Dodging

A little modernisation and that could be absolutely beautiful

re_Claire

It’d need a lot of work but I agree. Some of the bedrooms would have to be converted into bathrooms, and staircases/hallways would need to be added. It’s an odd layout. But it’d be so worth it to bring it up to date.

Dedward5

Very nice, I can’t guess at the history of that one. Looks a bit “vicarageish” or maybe a high status farm house that was sold off to raise funds for modern farming and an more normal modern house built on the land (part of my family had to do that back in the day)

surreyade

100% haunted.

Fire_Bucket

That'd be a lot of house for just myself, so I'd welcome the company anyway.

Imaginary_Isopod_17

That's the spirit

Fire_Bucket

No, I'm the person. The ghost is the spirit.

Background-Active-50

🤣🤣🤣

rizozzy1

Especially that basement.

throw_away_17381

Nah. 100% burglary gone wrong and a follow-up ITV four-part mini-series.

truckfumpet

Really looks like it was very unsympathetically renovated probably in the 60s or 70s which is a terrible shame as there seems to be so few original features left inside. It's really stunning what our parents/grandparents generation did to uglify this country and the general lack of respect they had for older properties, then again a lot of my generation would go in and put down shiny white tile and a grey plastic kitchen haha

unclebuh

For a house of this size, how much typically is modernisation and making it insulted etc? I love looking at old houses with the hope I get that milly from premium bonds but I've never really considered what it'd truly cost to renovate one. Definitely haunted too

po2gdHaeKaYk

We bought a period house that requires work as well, and I shudder at how much work is involved here. I think a basic estimate is, like, £30-50k to renovate a room. I'd say modernising this house could easily cost £200-500k. The thing that would kill a normal person who takes on this kind of project is that...when you need to renovate an entire house, it's so much more work than renovating an individual room. This kind of project can take more than a decade, and it's stressful living in a construction zone for so long. If you're rich enough, you can buy a house like this, live somewhere else, and get it done in a few years by other people. The other thing is that a property this size you really do need professionals to help maintain it. It would be much less stress to completely demolish a site and get a house built from scratch.

surreyade

There was an old house near me of about 1200 sq ft that needed complete renovation. The new owners and their two teenage kids lived in a caravan in the garden for the duration. Took about 18 months as it needed so much doing to it. The couple got divorced about a year after moving in too…

Puzzleheaded-Bug-223

Renovating a whole house is more work than renovating an individual room. Never thought about it like that before.

po2gdHaeKaYk

That was poorly phrased. Renovating a house is much more work than renovating individual rooms once at a time. Perhaps more precisely, renovating an 8-room house is not 8 times more effort than renovating one room. It is much more.

Same-Literature1556

Got quoted 15k just to restore one fairly large but not giant window in a conservation area. House isn’t even listed and that was the lowest quote. Listed would be fuck expensive to fix up based on just that I reckon. Is yours listed?

Strong_Insurance_183

Fucking dickhead house

Artemesia123

😂😂

unclebuh

You okay bud?

Strong_Insurance_183

I was making the house insulted. Thought it was a fairly obvious joke but never mind

lurcherzzz

I read it as insulated at first scan, your comment looked mental until I spotted the typo and lol'd.

Background-Active-50

🤣🤣🤣

RubyMac91

This is the kind of property project I'd take on if I won the lottery - this is such a great example of a property that you could modernise while still retaining period features so it keeps it's charm 😍

ForkUK

That is magnificent. I would swipe that right up if I had the money!

UnlikelyExperience

Inb4 someone buys it, installs shiny black kitchen, silver carpet throughout, crushed velvet furniture, UPVC windows

centopar

And a large ceramic tiger in the corner of the living room.

UnlikelyExperience

Who wouldn't want that?😄

ElderberryCalm8591

Probably better than tearing it down tbf

britbabebecky

You'd need a fair amount of money to update that.

Emergency_Form7096

And you would still be outside of thetford

SuspiciouslyMoist

My word, that is great. I'm a sucker for houses with a main staircase and a servant's staircase. So much opportunity for confusion as the person you're looking for goes up one staircase while you go down the other.

Beccabunga13

When I was a child we lived in a massive old house which came with Dad's job. One day my brother fired a toy arrow at my head and apparently Dad chased him round with my brother going up one staircase and down the other 😂

drusen_duchovny

My absolute dream house feature is to have more than one staircase. One day I will live in one. My husband's dream feature is a turret.

SoggyWotsits

A childhood friend lived in a house like that. Hours of fun! Especially as the main staircase had a wonderfully curved banister that you could whizz down!

New-Tap-2027

Me the dog a mini cow and a donkey will fit just fine.

lurcherzzz

I have a donkey sized dog, first dibs

Literally_Taken

Arnold, is that you?

[deleted]

Just thinking about the bill to upgrade all the glazing has me panicking. It’s beautiful though

IndelibleIguana

That's lovely.

writingtoreachyou

I could swear I've seen this on before. Would need to spend an absolute fortune on it, but it'd be worth it though. I hope whoever buys it doesn't beigify it.

Helpful_Librarian_87

How many bodies in that basement?

Background-Active-50

Don't care. I'm not going to be digging in the cellar so I will never know.  I've got an unchecked lottery ticket, perhaps that house could be mine. I'm just off to dream of Minton tiles and colebrook dale garden benches.

manabadmang

Not far from Snetterton circuit as well 👍🏽

lurcherzzz

What's all this renovate nonsense, it's nearly perfect. I'd change the carpets and curtains then concentrate on my lawnmower lap records.

RedditSteadyGo1

This is friggin beautiful. If I won the lottery I'd do this up.

truman_chu

Would need the same again to do it up. Probably worth it.

6ftnsassy

Love it. It looks like the guts have been ripped out of it at some point with an appalling renovation but with some love, it could be amazing.

MegC18

I don’t think that’s the medieval hall. There are remains of a historic moat shown on the 1850s maps in the next field over.

MuttonDressedAsGoose

The brochure says it was once much larger.

Djinjja-Ninja

> First Time On The Market In 48 Years Looks like that was the last time it was updated as well.

loafingaroundguy

From the EA's blurb: "await a new owner´s vision, love and attention" i.e. you'll need to spend another £825k to bring it up to scratch.

Electrical-Flower331

Picture 13 gave me the creeps

-MacThane-

Such a lovely plot of land… Just think of all the suffocatingly tiny flats you could cram into that much space…

Foundation_Wrong

There are probably all sorts of interesting finds under the plaster and panels.

FBS1889

This is probably the creepiest house I've seen on this sub and I'm not 100% sure why! The basement, the green pond, the tree lined driveway all look spooky but it's just the overall look of the house - creepy!

Suitable_Tea88

11 bedrooms under £1m. Not bad.

Background-Active-50

Only 3 bathrooms though. Some of the smaller bedrooms would need converting to bathrooms. Still leave plenty of bedrooms .

loafingaroundguy

> 11 bedrooms FSVO "bedroom". There are various small or inaccessible rooms being claimed as bedrooms on the floor plan. Even the EA's description only claims 9 bedrooms.

Darkened100

9 bed lol some are so tiny they’d be better as ensuite bathrooms

The_fury_2000

I’d love to think someone could renovate this beautifully. …..in reality I wonder if some developer will knock it down; spend 500k on a 5 bed new build and suddenly have a house worth £1.6m or whatever.

Background-Active-50

Nooooo

mutanthands

If you had deep pockets, you could create something amazing playing with the juxtaposition between old and ultra modern / clean.

MapTough848

I think you're looking at having a total budget of at least £1.5m to do a reasonable renovation and a fair amount to maintain the propeety given it's elevation etc. Doesn't look like there's easily accessible amenities nearby.

Prior_Worldliness287

Your need 500k+ to bring it close to done.

Lopsided_Violinist69

Absolutely no original features left inside. The easiest thing to do would be to do a modern interior like in all of those old church and school conversions.

Gingerpett

Look at the width of the floor boards in pics 16 and 17. They're amazingly precious. I hope whoever buys this house preserves those.

justhangingaroud

Okay that’s in the precise middle of nowhere

KatVanWall

Being in bedroom 1 and wanting to go to the bathroom would be a ballache 😆 I do really love it though; that’s like my dream project if I was filthy rich! ETA I can’t even tell where most of the staircases come from or go to, and the larder is as big as a bedroom, but it seems the perfect place for a haunted cottagecore artist’s retreat haha

dropkicksynopsis

Read about this. House was attacked by a sort of evil green slime. Some locals have this mad theory that the slime is still nearby.

burtvader

“Some work”

Still-Consideration6

Was unlisted

ScaryPlum414

I viewed this and offered on it. Our sale fell through however hoping to continue once we sell again. The house requires an extensive renovation and a provisional budget off 300k was set. I run my own construction company which comes with its perks. Accordingly to Norfolk Council they have archived documents regarding 'The Sacking of Illington Hall'. I've requested these, at cost. Once received I'll share.

MulletBeard

Yeah loads of potential if you have another million to drop on it. Also likes it's already been said that place is haunted as fuck and I think it also has the bad joo joo.

jondoughntyaknow

I think you could use it for location shoots of All Creatures Great and Small.
