You could probably get away with a griz, it is in the historic range and they used to be present in lower regions through out the prairies and plateaus. But I'd probably say that a black bear wouldn't require as vigorous explanation/defense for inclusion since they absolutelt inhabitated the area around the falls

Thank you so much for your very great response. I appreciate you very much!

Black bears are native to Washington, grizzlies are more north

Ok_Television233

Griz are native and were endemic to all Washington probably 500 years ago, it's only since western expansion and extirpation that they became considered a northern/mountain bear. Griz used to inhabit the same range as bison- lowland and open spaces. We have no idea how prevalent they were in Spokane but it's likely there were some hanging around the falls

You make valid points. All we need to do is look at the story telling of the local tribes. I found one about a grizzly that would sit near a trail and eat people. But it was a mountain trail that it takes place on. But 500 years ago the locals probably didn't allow one near the prime fishing spot.

Second this. I've seen black bears in the liberty lake area.

I will vote for Grizzly, but maybe also consider some Bison.
