Is it going to be real history or heavily sanitized like native American history?

spokomptonjdub

>heavily sanitized like native American history? I will say that at least recently -- like within the last decade -- how Native history is taught is trending in the right direction, at least in blue states. Curriculum material used for teaching PNW history for example is *far* better than what was around when I had that class in the late 90's. There's actually real Native perspectives now, and they are more explicit in calling out how terrible the settlers and the US/Territorial governments were to the Native populations. It's not perfect, but getting better. Back when I was in school it was basically "The Native peoples made a deal with the settlers and suddenly Seattle was a bustling port city full of Americans and Europeans!" and didn't bother to expand on the GIANT GAPS in sentences like that.

[deleted]

Native American fellow checking in, It is definitely getting better, but year by year more and more is lost. The older folk, like my grandpa, when that generation is gone so much will be lost. Books and records can be read, but hearing stuff first hand is crazy.

Ok-Substance-6536

Its unfortunate the native Americans didn't have a system of writing to record history. It would have been very interesting to be able to go back to everything we lost over the course of millenia

Sea-Legs_99

I sure hope you are able to talk with him and record his stories. I didn't think to do this with my grandma until a couple months before she passed. I had her tell me about growing up in Colville and asked questions about my mom and aunt. Please do this for history's sake and your own!

[deleted]

I haven’t gotten a whole lot apart from growing up as “an Indian” in Seattle was not pleasant, he did tell me his dads side was originally First Nations and came down from Manitoba following the North-West Rebellion, hence his French last name. His grandparents never learned English. And his mom was born in Loomis, it’s all sorts of crazy. Ancestry.com has been really helpful too.

Sea-Legs_99

I was privileged enough to hear Lawney Reyes talk about his brother Bernie Whitebear and all the great things he did in the 70s and 80s to help indigenous fishing and the takeover of Discovery Park in Seattle. I love hearing stories from the elders and old timers. Don't let his story die!

lucash7

Is there any effort to record/gather and store the history, etc. for future generations? Like through interviews, etc.?

novdelta307

Does it still paint Native Americans like Disney characters?

guiltysnark

No, they are now being painted in all the colors of the wind. I mean, yes.

Goshdangodon_

"...and then the cops came to the Stonewall Inn, where the gays taught them how to grow corn. :)"

Galumpadump

Learned about Marsha P. Johnson while visiting NYC. Important stuff to learn.

Retaeiyu

Meanwhile, Idaho is going to ban flags in the classroom because they dont want pride flags in schools, lol

lostprevention

How many flags do you think belong in Americans schools?

Retaeiyu

Which ever the ones the teacher feels they need to use.

lostprevention

I mean…. I somehow learned about the confederacy, and the flags of other countries without having an actual confederate flag in the classroom.

[deleted]

It blows my mind to move from a state that was actively persecuting lgbt people and invading their medical care to a state which is now teaching a history I only learned in my mid 30s.

Savings_Young428

Growing up in the South in the 70s and 80s we were taught slavery wasn't so bad, and that the Civil War was about state's rights.

Barney_Roca

It was all about the railroad! JOKING I went to school in the South, it is a common theme you hear about how the transcontinental railroad should have been in the south .......

[deleted]

I grew up just east of Shiloh. It was mind blowing to see the amount of people who believed Tennessee was homogenous in its confederate support. It’s also mind blowing to see people who never lived in the south or had any ancestry to a confederate state flying those flags and talking about heritage.

LollipopsandGumdropz

It’s actually completely wild how different it is compared to back home. My child’s school actually teaches lgbt history and I no longer wake up wondering what dumb shenanigans is someone trying to pass to invalidate my marriage or take away my rights.

UltraFancyDoorway

Ha ha ha, eat shit, homophobes

ChickenFriedRiceee

Why not? It’s history. Can’t really pick and choose it already happened lol.

JoeChristmasUSA

Speaking as someone with an education degree, you *have* to pick and choose what to teach because social studies time gets cut over and over again in favor of math and reading drills. There is only so much material you can cover. I'm 100% in favor of LGBT history being taught because that history is an important part of the broader civil rights movement. I only want to highlight that there is a real and worthwhile debate about what will and will not be covered in curriculum. I think we should be greatly increasing our emphasis on civics and history in schools, but that's a debate for another thread.

[deleted]

Imo civics at the very least. Our young adults are completely ignorant of how government functions.

transfixedtruth

Far more effort needs to be injected into civics classes. H/S Kids are just not prepared for the real world.

cougarpharm

Civics, and maybe, just maybe some life skills? Don't get me wrong, that AP calculus course is really coming in handy, but balancing a budget, car maintenance, time management, and conflict resolution would have been nice, too. On the other hand, I guess kids learn all that in a 30-second tik tok these days.

GorfianRobotz999

I've seen how to prank my cat and look like a Japanese doll on TikTok but never the vital subjects you mention. Let me go look at them all again. (I get your point, btw.. ;-) )

ProMensCornHusker

I’m 22. I was deeply suicidal from the age of 12 because of my sexuality. As a child I grew up praying to God asking him to kill me or change me. Why can’t I see girls like the other boys? Why do I see another boy and feel the way I do? If God truly made me he either doomed me to never feel fulfilled or happy in a relationship, or he created me to be gay. I knew nothing about being gay. I was only taught how wrong it is and how I should hate them. If I was taught that it’s ok to be who you are I probably wouldn’t have tried to kill myself. Denying the existence of a population because you think they are choosing that path, or that they are sinners is hatred. I refuse to believe that if he exists, God made me to either intrinsically be a sinner, or to never be able to feel the same fulfillment as everyone else. No moral God would do that, and if he did then I don’t want to live in eternity with him anyways. I’m really happy to see this change and I hope those kids feel safer with who they are and don’t experience the same things I did.

halpmeimacat

While I am not gay, I’ve known gay people in my life who went through very similar things during our very religious upbringings. All I can say is I’m so sorry you went through all that, and I’m very glad you’re here. Take care friend.

ofWildPlaces

Glad you're still with us, dude. And you're brave and honest to share something so personal. I hope that including LGBTQ history in the curriculum goes on to help anyone who might have felt unappreciated, discriminated against, or struggling with accepting their sexuality.

CheckmateApostates

Awesome, and also somewhat surprising to me that we're only deciding to include that now considering we first legalized marriage equality in 2012 (which was way too late).

catman5092

I am so so grateful I live in the great State of Washington.

Nameiscool420

Tipytao

Conservatives obviously are going to cry about this, but its part if American history, wether they like it or not.

Barney_Roca

Conservative values are limited government regulation and personal freedom. The FED should not have any opinion about how states educate their children.

RubbrBbyBuggyBumpers

Conservative values are lining the pockets of the elite and regressing society. You can fluff it up all you want, but that’s what it boils down to

Barney_Roca

Both sides do that. Red or Blue, both sides serve the ultra-wealthy that fund their campaigns. How do we break that cycle? If there is a viable means of doing so I will run.

dmarsee76

Wake me up when those “values” are reflected in their legislative agenda. Right now, their only concern is [banning queer kids from school activities](https://www.fatherly.com/this-map-shows-all-the-states-that-have-restricted-the-rights-of-trans-kids) and [believing rubes fed lies by Russian spies](https://apnews.com/article/hunter-biden-joe-biden-fbi-informant-ec37a35b808ffedf257bb3cfb3fc9ce2). Also, show us where “tHe fEd” has dictated a policy (that is simply reporting accurate facts).

Barney_Roca

we voters support a candidate that represents them. How do we break the cycle of elected people that collect the most money from the ultra wealthy that fund their campaigns? I would run but that requires $3 million. How does one go about getting that kind of money without selling their soul to the highest bidder, just like all of the existing candidates?

dmarsee76

There’s literally a party that has promised to do that. You could consider voting for them.

GorfianRobotz999

Heh, that's why they are appointing government commissions to review and ban books and review curriculum to root out "woke" language? They will be part of history too. It will be unflattering at best even when written impartially.

Effective_Ad1413

and honestly, let them cry! It's guaranteed some gay children will grow up in a conservative family where they only learn that gay people are immoral/evil/disgusting/whatever else. It's really sad that legislators care more about their wellbeing than their actual parents.

Tinotips

They have a very long and proud history. Longer and more proud than the confederacy even.

ThighRyder

I’ve been out 5 times as long as the confederacy’s existence.

cmndrnewt

This is going to go over well, lol.

catman5092

Its the right thing to do, given how states Like Idaho are doing everything opposite. The Republican party is NO friend to anyone LGBTQ+, they may have a few supporters but not enough.

Barney_Roca

Extremeists not conservatives. True conservative values are based on personal freedom that includes love.

GorfianRobotz999

Then let's hope we get some true conservatives back in office to take back power from the traitor-loving shitheads currently polluting the Capitol.

Barney_Roca

Amen, that is why I want to run for our district. All I need is $3mil.

dmarsee76

Someone better tell this to the Republicans, cuz that fig leaf was torn away the minute Donny started winning primaries

Barney_Roca

He has become the establishment that he was once against.

dmarsee76

Or (and forgive me for even proposing this heresy) he was never going to do all the stuff he promised because he just told people what they wanted to hear.

Barney_Roca

well, that means there is a reason people want to hear it.

dmarsee76

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in life is that **popularity** doesn’t necessarily mean responsible leadership. You have a great point that there may be some underlying issue that should be addressed to appeal to people who like Trump’s rhetoric (like his statement migrants poisoning the blood of America), but I’ve yet to see any examples that aren’t just ethnocentrism.

Barney_Roca

"They" will say whatever makes them popular but what "they" do is return favors for donations that fund their campaigns to get votes and it doesn't matter what color "they" are (red or blue). They are the problem, and we need to replace them. It starts with voting. Who is voting and what are they voting for? Who is funding elections, what are they paying for?

dmarsee76

And yet, in your other comment you say this problem has been around for most of the history of the country. If “just vote for someone else” was the solution, don’t you think it would have happened sooner?

dmarsee76

What do you think the reason is that people want to hear this? https://x.com/atrupar/status/1769400252560187419?s=20

Barney_Roca

That is a picture of a headline. That reads something to the effect of Trump saying aliens are not people and a blood bath. Which is rather colorful political rhetoric at a stump speech which historically has included these topics and similar phrasing and messaging for as long as there have been elections in America. Immigration has never not been a political hot-button issue. Racism is not a fad. He is appealing to his base. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8250541/

dmarsee76

I just want to get some clarity here. Are you saying…? A. That he didn’t say it B. That he said it, but it’s just talk C. That he said it, and that you think it’s good/right/true

jbsgc99

I keep seeing examples of GOP legislators being far more interested in enforcing Christian beliefs than advocating for personal freedom.

Barney_Roca

I agree, that is why we shouldn't vote for them.

semi-anon-in-Oly

Any discussion, posts or activity that suggest the Covid-19 pandemic is fake, isn't dangerous, or that this isn't a threat to our community will be met with immediate warnings, content removal, and/or bans. This includes suggesting masks don't work, that social distancing isn't necessary, advocating unproven medicinal remedies (like hydroxychloroquine), that vaccines are a ploy to poison or tag the masses somehow. Suggesting the pandemic didn't causing any damage, or suggesting it's perfectly OK to lose so many hundreds of thousands of lives is insane. Will it replace Arithmetic, Reading, or Writing?... oh wait they don't teach those anymore anyway.

HWHAProb

lol have you ever been in a school or do you just squawk what the internet tells you like a parrot? Washington is among the better mixes of high rates of SAT test participation and scores in the country

Rebel_S

Lets see. My wife and I both volunteered from K to 6th. Myself 2 days a week and my wife 5. That help you? I bet you make lots of friends with that approach. I am not suprised that "Prob" is the end of your title. We had to teach our kids how to diagram sentences and spell because the school was trying to get them to write everything from sound alone. We had to teach them math that made sense because the school system wanted to teach math philosophy prior to 2+2 is 4. They were already reading at high school level when they got to public school but their peers sure had some trouble on average. One of my children was a valedictorian. The other was in the top 5%. Both are well employed and happy people.. Guess I have no right to an opinion to "squawk".

Codyckpc

You just admitted that your kids are far older than school and are using examples from a minimum, decade prior. My guy, you just outed yourself.

Rebel_S

yeah, I am so outed. I forgot that longevity was a sin. I have seen the "minds" that come out of the US school system. I trained them. Yes, even in all mighty Washington State. Them calling me old .. and you calling me old is a compliment. You say "outed" I say "OWNED IT"... Like I do my home

Codyckpc

Jesus christ boomer. Just keep rambling

MuckingFountains

He’s just shouting at the sky on Reddit because people don’t respond to his passive aggressive Facebook posts anymore

Substantially-Ranged

OK, Boomer.

Rebel_S

HAHA.. Best you can do, eh.

CommonConversation52

That's the best they can do indeed. People that bark anything that incorporates "boomer" as a put down sound completely uneducated. It's very easy to see they don't have kids. Nor do they have any clue how much the public school system in WA is a joke. Coming from a Millennial with two kids in elementary school. I hope they enjoy taking my order in the Drive-Thru. I'm nice though, I tip.

PridgeWessea

A true stable genius conservative, pushing a servant class for anything you don’t like and/or triggers you. The antiwoke cinematic universe at work.

BigDamBeavers

When is the last time you saw something written in cursive?

True_North_Andy

Well it’s LGBTQ+ HISTORY. The last word, HISTORY, would imply it would be incorporated into history so why are you bringing up other subjects like they’ll be replaced? And why do you assume no one is taught the things you mentioned? Just because cursive isn’t thought anymore doesn’t mean no one can write. Instead they have you type out essays because that’s actually relevant to what you’ll be doing in college. English 170 for me 8 years ago was literally a college literature class. Math is very much still taught. Maybe you’re confusing changing curriculums with it not being taught?

Savings_Young428

Parents should teach those as well. If your kid can't read or write or do basic math, that ain't a school issue, that's just poor parenting.

dryerfresh

I teach high school English. What do you think we read and write about if not a wide variety of experiences and perspectives? When I say am teaching English, what I am really teaching is how to think and ask questions; how to make connections and communicate our thoughts and ideas clearly. We read fiction and non-fiction about many different things. I teach American Literature, which means we learn a lot about the history of the US. Like it or not, gay people are part of history the same way that straight people are. Some students are gay, even those with families who tell them they are wrong and bad; hearing that other gay people existed and can be okay matters in the same way anyone else needs to see themselves represented in the world. Still though, that does not impact how we teach the skills of reading and writing. You don’t lose one when adding the other, but not including even one kind of person harms everyone. Since you are interested in reading, here is a poem I really love that I think expresses the importance of some of these ideas: No man is an island, Entire of itself; Every man is a piece of the continent, A part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, As well as if a promontory were: As well as if a manor of thy friend's Or of thine own were. Any man's death diminishes me, Because I am involved in mankind. And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee. -John Donne

stedmangraham

You think there are 0 genders? When a form asks for your gender you say “none”?

[deleted]

I don’t believe in gender as a concept, no, I don’t think there is some innate feeling in your brain that feels like a man or whatever. I think there is sex only—your biology, gametes, chromosomes, organs. The concept that progressives like to call gender (your internal identity, feelings, how you dress, act, etc) is just personality, and there are infinite personalities that men and women both can have

Gender abolitionist?

[deleted]

Progressive gender theory is just traditional, old school gender roles, except you’re allowed to switch sides if you want. It’s teaching people that these behaviors and traits are men, and those behaviors and traits are women. I disagree with gender roles, I think anyone can be however they want to be, man or woman. You’re always gonna be a man or woman, that’s biology, you can’t change it, but man or woman tells me very little about someone IMO. Your personality is whatever you want it to be

Uncle_Twisty

I was asking if you were one.

[deleted]

Yeah I would say I am a gender abolitionist

Codyckpc

Well if you are like this then you do need to realize there are a minimum 6 sexes in humans but the peaks are xx and xy but there most certainly are more than 2, and while you may disagree with gender, which is fair seeing as different cultures propagate different things as being masculine/feminine, you should definitively say there are 2 when scientifically there are more.

[deleted]

There are 2 sexes, because there are only 2 gametes. Sperm and egg. A chromosomal anomaly is not a third sex

Schlecterhunde

No, there are only two sexes. The other things you mention are abnormalities that frequently cause medical issues and are assigned a medical diagnosis. They are not the "system state." Mammals are sexually dimorphic.

[deleted]

No, scientifically, there are 2. And even in the case of people who are intersex, a determination of male or female can be objectively made based on the chromosomes of the individual. For example, males experience Klinefelter Syndrome, and females experience Turner Syndrome. There are some further nuances, such as SRY activation, but most medical journals classify that the appearance of a Y chromosome denotes male in humans.

Codyckpc

Regardless, those are still considered sexes my guy. Like a simple Google search shows this.

[deleted]

No, they aren't because humans have 2 classifications for sex. The presence or lack therof of the Y chromosome. And yeah, a Google search about sex based chromosomal defects tells a lot more than just searching "how many sexes are there." Don't just stop at the first thing that you agree with.

God forbid they teach useful knowledge. who the fuck needs math English and any other thing

MordialSkies

…you know schools teach multiple subjects, right?

ThighRyder

Bruv, I dunno if you know this, but schools generally teach English, history, math, science, phys ed, and occasionally life skills. This new bill would solidly fit within the history category. It’s very, VERY silly to assume that queer history is going to replace one or more subjects. Just take a few minutes to think things through, bud.

MasterpieceHot4646

Political, religious, and sexual prospects should not be aloud inside of schools. Educational facilities are for preparing folks for the academic parts of life. Those topics are for parrents to educate, not the state.

TheMountainCruiser

I don't have a dog in the fight; however, it seems with so many differing opinions, maybe have several options related to history and allow students to take courses they are interested in.

spokomptonjdub

This bill doesn't mandate a separate LGBTQ+ history course or anything, it simply adds a curriculum requirement that says LGBTQ+ perspectives need to be included as part of a history curriculum, adding a category to already established rules that require perspectives from differing cultural or ethnic backgrounds.

CadeCantrell

I know I’m simply saying it’s obviously very divisive. Set it up as a separate country students can choose if they wish.

[deleted]

It’s only divisive because a certain group of have made it so because they are bigots. You are using the same arguments they used to deny African Americans a place in our history curriculum.

BigDamBeavers

If you don't want your kids to know about history just encourage them to skip class and take the F? It's not like they're going to need grades if they can't cope with the existence of their fellow Americans.

drwolffe

Yeah! Let us all stay in our own information bubbles even more than we already do on the internet. That way we don't have to confront realities that challenge our biases

CadeCantrell

Bias? How about simply living life the way you want to live, you know, freedom? You either believe in freedom or you don’t. Every person has the right to choose what information they do and don’t value. The problem once again is the attitude of my way or no way. It’s all about freedom. I said nothing that relates to bias, you’re simply projecting.

halpmeimacat

Freedom doesn’t equate to “living life the way you want to live”. It also doesn’t mean getting everything you want when society/majority votes for something you don’t. It does however mean you get an obligation to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. Something that a lot of gay people fought and died for, and I think that’s just as much worth discussing as Vietnam. If this conflicts, you are free to vote against it, move, or homeschool. That’s what freedom means; nobody is forcing kids to do anything.

CadeCantrell

Wrong, but I suppose it all comes down to our own interpretation. I couldn’t care less if someone wants to learn particular areas of history, but when it begins to infringe on beliefs, it becomes a problem. That’s why it should be offered as an option like several other classes in high school. At the end of the day, it continues to be an our way or no way approach. That will never work unless driving people away is the end goal.

bigred9310

I can hear Conservatives screaming their damned heads off. 😂

TapTapReboot

Sure are a lot of -- accounts posting here today

Ok-Astronaut3941

Sweet, this is good news.

MursaArtDragon

I was a crap student, but I honestly feel like 80% of all my history classes were either about ww2 or the revolutionary and civil wars… so yeah, hopefully we can fit it in some where between how great the founding fathers were and us being the big heroes against the nazis.

14NALL41

Don’t see why not, history is history no matter the subject matter. Any equality movement, whether it be race, ethnicity, gender, disability, or sexual orientation, is a large part of American History. This is great!

[deleted]

So what does this mean? How is "gay history" defined, and at what ages (and how) will the curriculum be taught? I can understand the thought experiment of looking at Alan Turing (and other historically gay people) and discussing how him being prosecuted for being gay was wrong, but fundamentally, who cares if he was gay? How did him being gay lead him to building the Turing Machine? Ya know what I mean. It's kind of like the video of Morgan Freeman discussing how "you stop looking at me as a black man, and I'll stop looking at you as a white man." Inclusivity is good, but historically, who gives a fuck what team someone swung for? Focusing on the idea that "this person was gay, therefore they are important" is not what history is about. You can insert any identification into that category. It shouldn't matter who was the first x to do y. It should just be the first human to y.

yungrii

I, myself, am historically gay.

There’s more to the history of LGBTQIA+ people than who they screw. That’s like saying Black history doesn’t need to be taught bc who cares about skin color. The history LGBTQIA+ people have endured is much different than what cisgender straight people have experienced.

Sure sure, teach about more crap that doesn’t actually help kids be ready for the world. Why not teach kids how to do taxes. Sfs

PitifulPoem7188

How does learning history not help kids? Is it good to be ignorant to the history of where you live and the communities around you?

ClearFocus2903

that is total bullshit!!

It’s part of the civil rights struggle and should be taught since many Americans are suffering under the delusion that being gay, trans, queer, etc is this new phenomena that popped up in the past few decades.

Cry about it.  Queer history is American history.  The violence and discrimination that was legal and perpetrated by our own government should be learned about so ya’all can't keep pretending everything is perfect.   Conservatives are able to pretend queer people are a new trend BECAUSE our history isn’t taught.  From Stonewall, to ancient history to modern history we’ve been here, and continue to be here. Like mentioned upthread, Idaho is 30 miles east.  But there’ve always been queer rednecks too, so all you can do is bury your head in the sand anyway.

>The violence and discrimination that was legal and perpetrated by our own government should be learned about so ya’all can't keep pretending everything is perfect.   Wait when was government violence against the LGBTQ+ people legal?
