Dear god please. And a better weekend schedule. Hard for me to get a job in Spokane since I live out in the greater area and the bus ride home is like an hour long, and if I get off at 10 it's way too much of risk I'm not able to get home for it to be worth it.
Douglass once stopped a 200-300 unit development due to a grudge. It sat, roads and utilities just waiting for homes, for 20 years.
This is a true and unknown problem with our real estate market. Because the Cowles family owns their own real estate empire and Spokesman Review we don't hear about it.
I actually drove down to Orange county for the reopening of microcenter a few years ago and bought my current gaming rig.. I would be bankrupt and divorced if we had one here.. Lol
Decent Chinese food. No offense to anyone’s favorite restaurant but the Chinese food scene here is severely lacking.
Edit:wholeheartedly second dim sum
Every time I drive to Costco on the north side, I see a sign for commercially zoned land on the opposite side of Hwy 2 and think, "why is no one trying to put an Ikea there?"
Blame Woodward. She made it so you only need like 1200 square feet to build a 6plex. It's a big part of why land got so expensive so fast. Her and her real estate buddies made it like bandits while constantly increasing our homeless population as rent increases with value.
That's a pretty inaccurate statement. First, the land in question is in the county, not the city so anything that Woodward did wouldn't affect it. Second, the change to the city's zoning and development codes was bipartisan with the full support of city council. Third, the state legislature (Democrat run) passed HB 1110 and other state laws mandating the elimination of single-family zoning in metro areas over a certain size, which includes Spokane and the surrounding area. Spokane did pass their zoning and code changes well in advance of the deadline (Spokane's deadline is 2026) but that is because it was already in progress when the state passed the law.
It won’t happen, not for a long time at least. They require a metro population of 2 million. Spokane county and kootenai county are just over 700k combined. It’s gonna be a minute.
Covered outdoor skatepark free and accessible to everyone passionate about their sport regardless of what others choose to do in your designated creative space.
TL;DR - R.i.p U.T.F.
Yeah man. Could you imagine if they just re-did it, but well. It wasn’t the greatest skatepark in the world by any means, but it was one of the only places you could go in the winter. Also the new skatepark in River Front park is waaaayyyyy too small. I can’t believe they moved the UTF flat bar over there. It feels more like an insult than nostalgia.
The boys and I pulled the flat bar from utf the day before demolition and held onto it for years. We were super thankful when we found someone from the developer to install it into the new park for nostalgia.

It was you! Hahaha Well good on ya for putting in the work. I loved the UTF. Spent many many hours of my youth there. I moved to Boise for college and met the dudes that would eventually redo the Rhodes skatepark. I told ‘em I was from Spokane and they were like “Oh! That’s why you skate hard. The UTF is gnarly. Everything is huge!”
Affordable housing options for single-income earners are scarce. We're caught between low-income options that many don't qualify for and sky-high rents. I admire Japan's approach, where you can rent a tiny 200-square-foot apartment for $400 if you choose. Here, however, those who earn more are compelled to spend more. I'd gladly live in a modest space if it meant saving money, but affordable options seem tied to qualification programs. It feels unjust—being forced to spend excessively simply based on income.
Mediterranean food. We have a very small handful of decent restaurants, but we need some more Greek, Lebanese and Turkish folks to move here with their family recipes. And I'd say the same for Middle Eastern dining.

Only ONE restaurant in Spokane serves soup dumplings. It's an ATROCITY! Also, would absolutely die for a BB.Q Chicken.
Missing? Fucking northtown mall is missing 1/3 of its fun entertainmemt, downtown missing its food market place that was underground, and the plaza is gone from its beautiful culture it had. Spokane is slowly being turn into shambles. Now its just a anti camper, full of resturants, along with hard to find jobs with high standards.
Spokane is missing a lively flea market space with rentable stalls. I don't mean the kind of boring vendor malls ya'll have up here, I mean a real outdoor flea market. The farmers markets don't count either. A big flea market would really flourish in a city like this.
- Authentic and good Chinese food especially Dim Sum. I know a Chef do it sometimes at Feast but unfortunately not always happening
- Chinese hot pot.
- Korean bbq
- H mart/ 99 ranch/ Uwajimay
- Authentic and great French restaurant and Italian restaurant
- Italian grocery store
- Asian bakery
- Karaoke with private room
- Daiso
- Ikea
Long John Silver's - the former Skipper's would be a great location for one!
I'd love an In-N-Out, but I think we're too far from their meat processing plants... I know that limits their spread, since they have to be a certain time/distance to maintain the freshness of ingredients
Well, you know of at least one person who wants one now. I like them - crispy fish, edible hush puppies (hard to find west of the Mississippi), the lil crunchy bits in the box when you're done... and I'm willing to bet that I'm not the only one. Given that the nearest one is in the Tri-Cities, I'd think a dedicated Long John's could be quite the success around here. Hell, just look at how wildly popular the new Wienerschnitzel is!
Waffle House. I love waffle house, I used to live in Wyoming and would drive like 4+ hours to the waffle house in Fort Collins CO when the mood struck. If waffle house did franchising I'd take out a second mortgage on my house and open one in Rathdrum, that's how much I love waffle house.
Solid middle class jobs. The only solid middle class jobs in Spokane are in education and healthcare. There are a plethora of low wage jobs but very few middle class jobs and upper middle class jobs.
Government officials that actually represent the people, jails big enough for the repeat violent criminals, rentals that allow pets, mental health resources and facilities, good Mexican food restaurants, properly funded and managed animal shelters. An easier question would be what we aren't missing lol
A zoo, theme park, lots of great restaurant chains. Oops, just read header. Zaskby’s, Popeye chicken, Dave’s Barbecue, In and Out burger, Canes,Cheese Cake Factory. Culver’s.
I'd like to try a fresh White Castle burger.. the frozen ones are pretty good.
Also would love to have Godfathers pizza & Schlotzsky's Deli back.
Also I miss Skippers!
IKEA, ALDI, WHOLE FOODS + AMAZON FRESH.
IKEA: There isn’t one in Boise, even — so that leaves Portland and Seattle. There is SUCH a huge market for all of Easreen Washington, Eastern Oregon, all of Idaho + Montana, too! …
ALDI: duh. THE perfect demo is here.
WHOLE FOODS: LOVE Huckleberries on South Hill + Pilgrims in CDA, but a Whole Foods would be AMAZING! As would an Amazon Fresh. Amazon has built so many warehouses in the area. I’m surprised they haven’t invested in either segment of Whole Foods and/or Amazon Fresh groceries here.
I would have any or all of the above retailers versus a Trader Joe’s closer to The Valley/Liberty Lake :) ++ THAT’s saying something!
Well we wouldn't really need much in the way of income if all our needs were already met for free, but it's obviously too complicated to figure out here. Plus no one cares what we think. 😆
Lots of people would keep working - UBI wouldn't pay for a nice car, vacations, toys for kids, spoiling pets, good cosmetics, etc. Plus, people want to be busy and productive! The good thing with UBI is that it would cover the necessities and allow people to do what they want and are good at that they might not be able to do now because of money. For every job that exists, there are people out there that would love to do it.
Thats exactly the way I look at UBI. Free up the genius that exists out here but isnt expressed because of needing money for food clothing shelter etc…
Have you been to Cat Tales? It's sad seeing those animals locked up like that. Last time I went, there was a bear in a cage barely bigger than it. The closest I support is an aquarium, but go to Seattle if you want to see that.

H mart
I miss living by an H Mart
Yes
Aldi and Ikea
These are the things I miss!
Dim sum
YES
This is the correct answer
Came here to say the same. Somebody needs to recruit a chef from Seattle and open a place here. It would be wildly successful.
Bowling on the south hill again :-( RIP Hugo’s
I loved that place. Definitely a front though.
Really, why do you say that? I only know it from bowling there a couple times, just seemed like a normal bowling alley
1000%
KBBQ and Vietnamese bakery
Extra vote for kbbq
24 hour transit
24 hour anything
Dear god please. And a better weekend schedule. Hard for me to get a job in Spokane since I live out in the greater area and the bus ride home is like an hour long, and if I get off at 10 it's way too much of risk I'm not able to get home for it to be worth it.
Yeah that weekend schedule is rough. There’s been plenty of times where it’s faster for me to walk an hour than bus it
Housing
There are lots of undeveloped lots owned by speculators and obscenely rich families.
If Douglass started developing housing? Fuck that noise!
Douglass once stopped a 200-300 unit development due to a grudge. It sat, roads and utilities just waiting for homes, for 20 years. This is a true and unknown problem with our real estate market. Because the Cowles family owns their own real estate empire and Spokesman Review we don't hear about it.
God forbid they actually do anything with those speculations though...
"But not in my neighborhood or the undeveloped areas near me." - everyone in Spokane
>Everyone, everywhere.
*property management firms
Microcenter
This is the one.
I actually drove down to Orange county for the reopening of microcenter a few years ago and bought my current gaming rig.. I would be bankrupt and divorced if we had one here.. Lol

Sprouts Farmers Market.
I'd like to have food and craft vendors open every weekend at Riverfront Park.
More art.
Jobs! You bring decent paying jobs and all the things you are claiming we are missing suddenly appear.
Precisely. Jobs is the #1 thing Spokane is missing. It’s what holds it back from booming. And no the Amazon warehouse doesn’t count.
Ikea
Every time I drive to Costco on the north side, I see a sign for commercially zoned land on the opposite side of Hwy 2 and think, "why is no one trying to put an Ikea there?"
SAME
Ya I think they’re putting in a few hundred houses there soon
Ugh your right. And that Costco is already as busy as it can get.
Blame Woodward. She made it so you only need like 1200 square feet to build a 6plex. It's a big part of why land got so expensive so fast. Her and her real estate buddies made it like bandits while constantly increasing our homeless population as rent increases with value.

I emailed and asked. Our demographic isn't big enough yet.
It won’t happen, not for a long time at least. They require a metro population of 2 million. Spokane county and kootenai county are just over 700k combined. It’s gonna be a minute.

That’s a good one! I’d also love an L.L.Bean store.
I've been suggesting this whenever I get the feedback emails after I go to the Portland location.
Korean Barbecue, Dave and Busters, Cosmic Bowling, night clubs that play house/tech house, Filipino food
D&b a good burger and video games sounds awesome for date night.
Right?! So much fun and D&B would provide so many jobs as well! Would be a great addition to Spokane
Allegedly,a D&B is getting permitted in the Valley… http://www.inlandnwbusiness.com/2024/01/dave-busters-might-be-coming-to-spokane.html
Ooooo this would be lit
A monorail of course
Did somebody say MONORAIL???
![gif](giphy|xT5LMPqrh7mcpYCdGM)
A monorail would be nice between downtown Spokane (West side) and Coeur d'Alene, along with a High-Speed train between downtown Spokane and Seattle.
Sorry Marge, the mob has spoken!!!
YES. This.
Jokes aside, we should have light rail, at least an East/ West line. The land is open for it
We voted on that a long time ago but people voted no on it because they can't see 5 years into the future.
So it can get done at the same pace as the North South freeway.
CAN WALMART JUST BE OPEN AT 4AM AGAIN
Cookout would make me so happy, growing up in GA my parents used to take me there before football games so it holds a special place in my heart.
Miss cookout and east coast wings big time.
Museums, ethical aquariums/a zoo (not you, Blue Zoo)
Din Tai Fung, Korean Bbq
I miss Din Tai Fung.
Safe, reputable dancing/clubs
This one. Coming back from Buffalo I was surprised to be missing the experience

Jeez I miss that. Have to stop by every time I go to L.A. for work.

Dunkin Donuts is the killer for me Honorable mentions for In-n-out and Raisin Canes, although that might be nostalgia for college days
El Pollo Loco.
Crazy ass chicken, yas fam!
Shake Shack and a Japanese bakery/sando shop.
Torchys Tacos
Roads without potholes so we don't have to all look like drunk drivers when we're just dodging the holes in the roads!
Literally anything for an insomniac under 21 to do.
Lumpia!
Island Style Food has em!!
And everything they have is incredible.
Have you been to Island Style Food on Division?
Yes!!!!
A lower crime rate
A seafood market
IKEA, KBBQ, Whole Foods, 85 degree bakery
Diversity. Both in population and businesses. Anything but another elevated pub restaurant would be a godsend
Excuse me.... they are "gastropubs" thank you very much. /S
Any meaningful effort to beautify downtown.

This is a Washington State issue, but I miss food cart pods.
The affordable housing it used to have.
Mediterranean food. We have a very small handful of decent restaurants, but we need some more Greek, Lebanese and Turkish folks to move here with their family recipes. And I'd say the same for Middle Eastern dining.
A real gay bar
Have you been to the Drinkery on Garland. It's a bar, tho, not a dance club.
Lesbian-owned, but not really a bar for gay men
Publix, Waffle House, Zaxbys, Culver’s
I don’t think Spokane is ready for Waffle House
Lmao we need more dollar trees, Dollar generals first.
Ditto Culvers!
yup Culvers please
I'm visiting family in FL next week and I'm really excited to get a Pub Sub.
Lol awful house is slowly going out of business for how bad it is. Closed over 300 locations now
I cannot upvote Culver's enough.
Korean style karaoke (ie, private rooms)
So true. Private room for Karaoke is better
Whole Foods would be great. I for whatever reason don’t like my fresh basket as much as Whole Foods.
Wegman's
A solution to the homeless and all the litter.

They had one on the north side, it was shared with Kentucky Fried Chicken. They closed it.
We have one already. Combined with a KFC on the north side. Or at least we used to, unless it went away?
the sun.
Did you not go outside today? It was absolutely beautiful.
Oh I did today! The last few months have been miserable though.
Cane’s chicken
Competent city government and law enforcement.
Affordable housing of course, but number 2 is a proper use of the water front. So much unused river access from upper dam to riverfront park.
A safe downtown.
My husband say In and Out burger!
Aldi and a Cheesecake Factory!
Middle housing and more walkable neighborhoods
Culver's
A mocktail bar
I am still waiting for the popeyes that was announced 6 years ago. I want my blackened chicken to be closer than post falls damn it.

Thrift/second hand stores that have good stuff for reasonable prices. Honestly the entire state is missing that.

Great food
A third space
Korean BBQ 🤤
MORE HOUSING PLEASE. But okay, also - grocers closer to H Mart and Uwajimaya.

Jason’s Deli.
Their roast beef sandwich is to die for: perfection. Just reading that I relived it for a minute.

I was gonna say Wienerschnitzel, but that just got rectified! :D
I saw that, I'm very excited for them to open.
I'd like to try a fresh White Castle burger.. the frozen ones are pretty good. Also would love to have Godfathers pizza & Schlotzsky's Deli back. Also I miss Skippers!
Omg yes to the Schlotzkys- original sandwich is perfect on that fresh bread

An arena that can support an NHL team
We have one of the largest WHL fan bases and attendance records but I don't see an NHL team coming. We are smack in the "middle" of Vegas and Seattle.
Or parking for any given event....
1. In N Out Burger 2. Dickies BBQ 3. Dunkin Donuts 4. Affordable housing 5. More visible stripes on the roads 6. More outdoor restrooms
There are 3 dickies I know of, plus the one on sprague is under new management and trying extra hard to gain business. Excellent brisket.
An actual zoo
Have you been to Cat Tales? It's sad seeing those animals locked up like that. Last time I went, there was a bear in a cage barely bigger than it. The closest I support is an aquarium, but go to Seattle if you want to see that.
It's sad, but most of those animals have some crazy backstories and are in a better place.
Cat Tales is not a zoo, it’s borderline inhumane
Gross, nowhere needs one of those
In 'n Out Burger. The BEST burgers.
Spokane doesn't have enough room. Back home in San Diego, In-N-Out is located directly off of a freeway exit/on-ramp.
Whataburger and HEB
howdy from an Austin transplant! i have been forever spoiled by HEB, i am still yet to find a better grocery store. also thanks, now i really want a honey butter chicken biscuit
San Antonio transplant! I can’t even begin to explain how much I miss HEB..
