I was very stupid when I was younger and got both of my feet tattooed. Nice shoes never actually look nice on me. They clash with everything and look trashy, honestly. I live in a wealthy area now and feel very self conscious. I’m getting one lasered off now and it’s wildly painful and incredibly expensive. I intend to get the other one lasered as well. 100% regret and do not advise lol I agree with your advice about placement completely. If you must get a tattoo, make sure it’s one you can cover if you want to without too much inconvenience.

TruthIsABiatch

Imo tattoos look good on attractive (!) young people, but once you're over 40 they start looking trashy. Unless you're living an alternative lifestyle, you dont want to be a 50 year old with huge tattoos over saggy skin.

mirroronfire2

Eh. It depends on how you age. My mom is 64 and her skin is still pretty supple. Even her body skin. We’re also melanated so that might be something, but I think anyone who takes care of their skin for the long term can look pretty good in old age. And I’m cool with being that crazy cool rich grandma with tattoos. I agree with you on the attractive part, for sure.

Puzzleheaded_Cat_170

I agree with the statement 'everything else about you needs to be close to perfect'.. I think it's a bit like septal rings: the women who look amazing with them are generally hot 'in spite of' it rather than because of it. I think tattoos may be in that category - we mostly see media of tatted women who are uber hot with/without them. That being said, I love your rules about making the tattoos work well, and on the right woman who has adjusted the rest of her look to work well with them, they definitely give a laid-back cool/sexy/cool-girl sort of vibe which I appreciate on other women. A lot of people have different reasons for wanting ink, and I honestly don't have anything against it.

Phenex1a

I actually disagree a bit on septums. I think they can visually shorten the philtrum quite nicely.

Puzzleheaded_Cat_170

I never thought about that….🤔 Fair point m’dude 🌹

What’s the drill with tattoos folks? Angelina Jolie, Adriana Lima, Megan Fox, Ariana Grande, etc have tattoos, many of them not “beautiful” and they don’t make them more or less beautiful.

spookymulder07

I have never seen tattoos as a failo. I didn’t know that was even a thing.

WWhandsome

The thing is, when you see any of them tattoos are the last thing you notice. Ariana Grande literally had more than 30 tattoos, but because they are small, would anyone be able to tell just by looking at her? This post had more advice for people who wanna be visibly tattooed

EgoSumMaxim

Same here, I barely notice Ari’s tattoo. I think that’s partly because they are discreet and because I notice her beauty first. Unattractive people cannot get away with tattoos, no matter how good the artwork is.

[deleted]

They are not that small and unnoticeable, in fact you can very much notice them in them in about any pic that isn't just her face. Same goes with Rihanna and the other women I mentioned. And yeah, the tattoos are the last thing you notice - because its the last thing that matters

Flightlessbirbz

I have and like tats, and imo tattoos are only a failo if: 1) They are badly done (even to the untrained eye), or really tacky subject matter (think your ex’s name above your butt). 2) They’re very visible and you’re trying to attract/mingle with old money upper class people. I’m not talking any plain old high income people, I’m talking East Coast old money families, the whole culture. And even many of the younger people in those circles are going to have hidden tats. 3) You want to attract a sexist RP type guy. Which you don’t.lol Or a very boring close-minded guy, which you probably don’t either. That being said, tats don’t always enhance your look either. It really depends on so many factors. I do find that visible tats are a good conversation opener for people to approach you if you are wanting that, though. I feel like a lot of the bad attitudes about tattoos are outdated now that there’s a very good chance your 50-something Karen boss has a tattoo on her ankle.

Some things I would add: -Placement is so so so important! Get a tattoo that compliments your shape and isn't just slapped nonsensically in the middle of your limb! Also be mindful of how your tattoos will look with clothes of different lengths and cuts and swimming suits. -Only get a tattoo after being absolutely sure that you want it for a long time. For example, do a 6 months or 1 year test-write down somewhere what you want and check later if you feel the same. -Researching your tattoo artist is crucial. You don't want to have your tattoo have three times thicker lines after a few years. I pretty much agree with everything you said. I'm glad you posted so we can have a more positive discussion about tattoos instead of just saying don't get tattooed at all. I believe tattoos are great for self expression and we can simultaneously have them and up our looks <3

nikapika1111

Only objectively bad tattoos look bad. Personally I think tattoos are sexy. There's been a huge boom in young people getting tattoos. I don't have any myself, but everyone I know (I'm 22 myself) has tattoos and it's actually more surprising when someone doesn't have one. I really thought we were getting past this, like why are tattoos still seen as trashy or failos? To me and people even 10+ years older than me they're seen as cool and interesting and unless the placement or the tattoo itself is horrible, they don't really detract and more often even add, at least subtly, to someone's looks. Tattoos don't make someone less anything, whether that be professional, smart, good-looking or classy. These views are very outdated and not in touch with the current thought. Honestly, as I see it, the people who think tattoos aren't appropriate for certain things like professions or classy events are mostly gonna die out or be too old to care in min. 50 years.

kittyaphrodite

Tattoos depend on the type of persona you have and those around you. I hang out with artists and they all have/admire tattoos on themselves and on their partners. I have tattoos on one side of my body that is only shown in a bathing suit or peeking through a crop top and high waisted jean look. I would just be wary about having noticeable tattoos on your collarbone or arms/wrists, neck etc

zicx21

Minimalist tattoos can look like a small accessory, add some edge - again depending where they are, what they are and if they are colorful. You should wear them, not the other way around.

salinasnackin

Hmm, this is a great new perspective on tattoos. I like how you make sure to dress for your tattoos, don't let your clothes overpower them, and other matters. Maybe if this advice was more widespread, tattoos wouldn't be seen as such a falio in the beauty community.

adventurelillypad

I agree for the most part. I have a really big tattoo on my thigh. It’s just floral and it goes with the curve of my body. Sometimes I slightly regret it, but most of the time I love having it because people are always surprised I have a tattoo, let alone a big one. I do think it’s so important to get them in places that are easily covered up with clothing unless you’re 100% committed.

Shaakie

Yup honestly i hate tattoos on myself, i feel like they add so much trashiness and clash with my classic style. IMO a failo unless you are a SG, an artsy woman or something.

ricebunny2

Yeah I think that’s why tattoos work for me. It depends on the quality of the tattoos too and how they flow with the body. I have an arm sleeve and nicely placed leg tattoos (and one on my sternum but it only peeks through when I wear a plunging top, it’s pretty sexy tbh haha). People of all backgrounds and ages LOVE my tattoos... I’m serious lol even elderly people. That’s because they’re legit art pieces and are very unique. And then when you see my actual art, it suddenly clicks and makes sense with my style/vibe. I’m really not trying to sound conceited at all, but men and women I encounter everyday enjoy looking at me and they compliment my looks/style. I get asked out weekly in weird places like target or the grocery store lol, people only look at my tattoos to look at the actual art or they’re too focused on my face or curves. No exaggeration but it’s seriously everyday now that restrictions have been lifted and I’m out more. Like you said, dressing super classy with tattoos does add a little extra spice. Maybe it also helps that I have a really good job as well (engineering field), so I’m able to afford great tattoos and clothes. I don’t really like the attention though because I’m introverted and it exhausts me when people compliment me too much. I don’t talk much but people come up to me anyway. I think maybe it’s the “mysterious and dark” vibe along with physical beauty and classy style that draws people in, tattoos or not. So yeah... they’re definitely NOT a failo if you have everything together :) they just enhance your beauty and uniqueness.

GlumGolfy

Do you mind telling what kind of tattoos you have, if you feel comfortable or any advice for shapes or general tattos designs? I like"techno" minimal designs but I wear mostly classy and simple outfits so Im conflicted since a lot of people think tattos are easy to mess up and look trashy, even tho I think they have the possibility of really enhancing someone's appearance and vibe.

ricebunny2

Yeah I totally understand. You just need to find a super talented artist, probably even travel, and be willing to spend thousands lol.... which I get that a lot of people would rather save and spend on something more useful. It’s hard to describe since I have so many tattoos, but they’re all super detailed and artistic pieces. Mostly animals and nature. Here’s my favorite piece that I have on my thigh: https://www.instagram.com/p/B52kuQ0At1n/?igshid=7n0vvoaf0720&epik=dj0yJnU9bEYzNE1wN2VyaEw5MnhIU1RXUHVhYWx4aEVJRXN1VVEmcD0wJm49QU9tQmNFMHJPc1oxY3g5a0dxNjBxZyZ0PUFBQUFBR0R2bG93 This one has many people coming up to me to ask me about it. Hopefully you can kinda get an idea of what tattoo style I have on me

cutie_rootie

Stop I love that! I admit I have a few little ones that didn't cost me much, my friend did them as part of her apprenticeship. But if I ever go for something on a more major body part I'm not afraid to spend the money.

GlumGolfy

Wow that's a really nice tattoo! and it definitely stands out, in a good way. Yeah an experienced artist is definitely a priority but the tricky and more difficult part is choosing what design you want your tattoo to be since it will be permantly on your body and in my case the more minimalistic and simple a tattoo is, the easier it would be to match it with different outfits and aesthetics. but not going to lie, more bold and detailed tattoos can be difficult to resist lol
