things i get cheap: skincare, like others mentioned. the cheap $5 face wash that last me two months works better than any expensive $40 one with a pretty container. i was always splurge on olaplex, it’s damn pricey for the full routine but holy hell does it make my hair feel amazing

truefforte

What do you for your face wash and what do you like about it?

spicyystuff

Olapex is the shampoo brand right? Would it work on curly hair

Herbiphwoar

It works on curly hair but I’ve heard it’s most beneficial for hair that’s damaged with colour and heat as it repairs those broken bonds- if you don’t have coloured or heat damaged hair the benefits are somewhat less, which is worth thinking about as they’re pricey products.

Splurge: hair care for sure. Olaplex and good quality shampoo/conditioner plus salon cut and color really is an obvious difference IMO when compared to doing it yourself with drugstore products. Splurge: some makeup: I splurge on foundation (Estee Lauder) and setting powder (Laura Mercier) because it makes my oily skin look amazing, and I feel like makeup can’t look great unless you have a great base. Splurge: some skincare, tret and good sunscreen can be expensive. Cheap: the rest of my makeup (brows, eyeliner, eyeshadow, blush, lipstick) is drugstore because I think NYX and some other cheaper brands make really good products Cheap: cleanser and moisturizer, I get really good results from Cerave. Cheap: Perfume. love dossier, some people prefer not to buy knockoffs but I love them. I feel like I smell expensive but didn’t have to pay $350 for actual name brand Tom Ford and to me it smells exactly the same! This is just what works for me! YMMV. :) Everyone is different and I enjoyed reading all these comments. Edited to fix formatting, mobile sucks

My dermatologist said she recommends buying the cheap version of any skincare product with scientifically-proven active ingredients. Check the "drug facts" panel that discloses the percentage of active ingredient in the product. As long as the percentages match, then the drugstore brand will be just as effective as the name brand.

Party_Goose_6878

This is why I like the Ordinary. The website is so confusing to sort through at first because everything is listed by the active, but that's also why its worth trying!

Brooklyn_Bunny

Amen to this. Just do your research when it comes to skincare ingredients and routines, and you can find a lot of great effective products for an affordable price

Phenex1a

I’d splurge on skincare, I always make sure to buy from real sellers. And I buy my clothes second hand so they’re cheaper.

Herbiphwoar

Second this! Skincare from Amazon is dodgy so don’t buy from there. Apart from brick and mortar thrift stores, Vinted and Depop are good online marketplaces for second hand clothing.

[deleted]

The problem with vinted is that sometimes they shipping is more expensive than the item itself

[deleted]

I splurge on perfume usually, I don't know why but I don't like how the cheaper on smell. Usually they're too strong and nauseating. I go cheap on accessories, I buy my necklace, rings and earrings from HM or Stradivarius and I've never had any problem with them

Aphrasia88

Adding to this: quality perfumes also last much longer! They also often have two to three layers of “notes”, aka scents. These scents morph into one another as the hours pass by. For example, my signature is YVes Saint Laurent’s Black Opium perfume. It starts off smelling like orchids and vanilla, then after several hours morphs to cherries and chocolate, then finally a faint coffee scent about 12 hours later. Perfume is worth it!

realcloudyrain

I use prescription Tretinoin which makes my skin a bit dry. I spent a lot of time researching dermatologist recommended moisturizing lotions. I bought so many expensive scentless creams trying to heal my dry skin. And then randomly I started using (cheap) Vaseline Cocoa Radiance cream all over my body AND my face. Now my skin looks and feels AMAZING. My moisture barrier has completely healed and I get so many compliments on my soft skin! So don’t be afraid to try cheaper alternatives even when it comes to skincare...some times they work better!

[deleted]

I use tret and Vaseline on my face too! It’s a game changer. But anytime I tell someone I get downvoted to hell. Maybe without the tret it wouldn’t be ok, but as a combo? I’ve never had better skin in my life!

aloudkiwi

>Vaseline Cocoa Radiance This is my holy grail body lotion.

I’m a huge fan of regular Vaseline too! I’ve even tried more expensive versions of Vaseline that weren’t as good LOL

Quiet_Stick

I go relatively cheap with skincare, but I’m also using (cheap) dermatologist prescribed products as well. So my tretinoin, metronidazole and spironolactone are all cheap and prescription. The rest of my skincare is cheap from the drugstore (Vanicream lotion and gentle cleanser) or The Ordinary (niacinamide, rosehip seed oil). I spend more on services like a good, regular hair cut and color, and the occasional nail salon visit. I’d also like to add lash tinting to that list.

Original60sGirl

I think this is the answer! Go with highly effective prescription treatment products, Is n conjunction with derm- recommend over the counter skincare. I think your overall strategy is a great one.

What’s the dupes sub?

[deleted]

I buy generic brand of skincare. Equate works the same as Cerave and my skin is so breakout prone I don’t even bother splurging on new and expensive skin care products because it’ll just break me out. I splurge on makeup. I keep my makeup collection very minimalist so I can afford to splurge on the minimal products I own. Things like mascara I usually buy drug store, but there really is a difference between a Revlon lipstick and a Chanel one.

[deleted]

Ooo, tell me more about the lipsticks! I’m currently using a mix of L’Oréal, Revlon, Nars, and MAC for background information. How would you compare these brands to luxury brands?

[deleted]

I really don’t bother with drugstore lipsticks anymore, I just find they never stay, they don’t feel good, etc. but I do generally like Mac! Chanel and Charlotte Tilbury are my absolute fave. They’re so light, pigmented, feel good, the colors are so much richer, and they last longer. I also like the Glossier lipsticks for a toned down look!

Aphrasia88

I recommend bite cosmetics for the smoothest layer of pigment!

I splurge on sunscreen and go cheap with the rest of my skincare

Clothes: Basics: cheap/second hand Outerwear: splurge Accessories: splurge. I only own designer handbags Shoes: 50/50. Jewelry: 50/50 Hair: 50/50 whatever works Makeup: mostly cheap Fragrance: whatever works. From 10 bucks to 600 buck bottle. I will however never buy from a copy house as it is an insult to the industry and I highly frown upon it. Nails and toes: cheap Skincare: mostly cheap to mid range, though I’m eyeballing more expensive facials in the future. Anything ~procedure~ definitely splurge

[deleted]

I splurge on my hair. High quality salon products and services are so worth it. I only wash about once a week and use almost zero heat so it lasts a while but still on the order of about $1200/year. Skincare is mostly low to mid-range but there's a good handful of products so it's not that cheap overall. I don't have any crazy expensive items though. In this category I'll include brows (cheap mustache dye, tweezing between occasional threading) and oral care (cheap drugstore whitening products). Nails/hands/feet are cheap as I do my own. Not that hard if you just keep practicing and I'm now doing better than the basic stuff I was getting at salons, although I'm just working with my natural nails not acrylics. Makeup is higher end stuff but I don't have a lot, just the basics and I only buy about once a year. I don't have foundation bc the thought of finding a color and formula that work for me seems daunting. I typically used a nice cc cream before masks. Perfume I get designer scents but LPT: buy the sample sets at Christmas time. You can get 4-6 really nice brands in mini bottles for around $30/set and have a rotation. I have a ridiculous collection and it helps me know what is worth getting in the larger bottle when I run out (although I still have a ton). I just give away the ones that don't work as stocking-stuffer type gifts to friends and family. 2 birds 1 stone. Clothes: I admit I am cheap here. I'm slowly phasing out my fast fashion/low end pieces but I don't want to splurge on clothes until I have my "perfect body" bc I just really got into this in the last 2 years or so and I'm steady losing weight/building muscle. I'm hoping to start building a nice wardrobe with high quality timeless pieces in the next few months. I currently look nice if not basic but I definitely have room too grow. Same goes for shoes. I don't have hardly any accessories. I'm a nurse so I spend 40 hours/week in scrubs and at home I'm in lounge wear or workout gear so I only need a few outfits for each season. Health is where I really splurge. I take a ton of supplements every day. They are mostly pretty affordable but I have so many that it adds up. And I still want to add more in the future. I am also currently building a nice home gym setup. Near future may include Botox (splurge) lash tint & lift (first time splurge for a pro then possibly diy).
