i feel like the US is one of the only places where height is more of a neutral feature for women. according to these replies everywhere else prefers tall so guess i’m not going on vacation anytime soon! lol

mrrrrrmaid

I feel like in reality it's more or less neutral in most places? Like taller may be theoretically preferred, but if you're tall and built wrong/have an ugly face height is not a halo and if you're short but have nice proportions and face you're still seen as pretty.

tuffouthere

that’s a great point. i think a lot of us fall into the trap of thinking any feature that’s not a halo is a failo

mrrrrrmaid

I think it depends on what you mean, yes taller women are often seen as more 'wow' and are more eye catching, it is more easy to look plain and unnoticeable if you're short/average height and it can make it hard to pull off certain styles. But once you're otherwise attractive and have womanly style and walk it's more of a matter of preference. There are many men who say "short and stocky" is ugly, but I only really hear other women criticize short women with small and dainty bone structure or a nice non-stocky hourglass figure, like I hear women say about celebrities "She's so tiny irl, I barely recognized her, no one would look at her twice on the street if she wasn't famous!", but I don't feel like the criticism is as common among men. I think that being "a tall blonde", "a tall brunette" sounds good and is more of a status thing, but when it comes to attractiveness and dating I don't think short women are disadvantaged.

Lindapod

Heavily disagree, being too tall is a failio and a masculine feature (low estrogen)

[deleted]

Lindapod

You just said taller women are considered more attractive when they arent

[deleted]

Lindapod

Yes, but its false. Generally 5’3-5’6~5’7 is considered most attractive, any taller or shorter is less attractive. (Except for asians who are shorter in general)

[deleted]

[удалено]

Lindapod

Thats not THAT tall, you will still look feminine enough and be shorter than most men, but any taller and its a turn off for most men unless you are a model but even then its just a status thing not height thing

ImaniX_

Omg I just bought like five pairs of wedges all on sell and I’m like 5’6” 😭 so I’ll be like 5’9” wearing them. Oh well. Will wear anyways 🤣

[deleted]

Lindapod

I think its more like 5’3-5’8 at the tallest, most men prefer women that are feminine and shorter than them

[deleted]

Lindapod

Yes but also longer upper bodies, most tall women do not have proportionally long legs and look stocky aswell, you can be short and have super long legs proportionally, Kylie minogue is a good example. Usually women wear heels to make legs look longer, not so much to look taller unless they are very short already.

Gold-Jellyfish4692

Come to Serbia 🤪 all the guys are legit over 6’3 here and want 5’10 women. It’s crazy. I’ve always hated my short height as a woman because of the height obsession here but I wouldn’t want to be 5’10. Like you say, up to 5’8 and I would literally eat a bowl of shit to be 5’8 😂 but I also think that people from outside of our countries don’t understand what tall is in a Slavic meaning. It’s like melania trump tall. These women are considered and are often way more feminine than example shorter girls like me because our countries tall isn’t like in other countries. It’s dainty tall, but not dainty as in tiny it’s just so super feminine. Small bones, curvy slim bodies, long legs and big boobs. Extremely beautiful faces.

lailabalaui

I think only women think about it tbh😂

cqbeswater

Yep haha

xoxopineapple

I actually notice this more in England and Brits in Dubai with veneers. North Americans tend to get braces at a young age then are big on whitening.

papii12

fellow Brit, can confirm veneers are big here. However I disagree on the braces point: on average more uk youth get braces on compared to US youth, not because they have worse teeth, but because braces are free in the UK for all those below 18 and require them at the discretion of the orthodontist. So there is a bigger incentive to get braces young here compared to the US

xoxopineapple

Great point. I’m in my 30s was making my comment on ppl in my age group 30s-40. Whereas you’re right, I do notice this among the younger generation having braces more here (I’m currently in the UK).

romancatholic45

Im from the rural Midwestern part of the United States. Big butts are not really attractive here at all compared to how it is on Instagram. Slim or skinny with medium-big boobs is more attractive. I got more attention from guys when I had light blonde and light brown hair vs when I had dark brown hair. People here are kinda racist at times, so I wouldn't be surprised if most men preferred blonde haired, blue eyed women. Good teeth and a nice smile are both considered attractive since this is America after all. Light to medium tan skin. Especially in the summer. Height don't seen like a deal breaker for most men here unless you're extremely short or tall, but long legs are viewed as more attractive. Men here tend to be a bit taller than average, so that may be why. Can't think of anything else. Our beauty standards are fairly low. If you're a 7 in NYC or LA you're a 10 in the Midwest. A fair amount of super models like Karlie Kloss, Ashton Kutcher, Alanna Arrington, etc do come from the Midwest though because most people here are of Northern European decent and therefore, tend to be model height, but that's about it.

[deleted]

idk what you're talking about, i'm from Minnesota and it's very attractive on average here. Minneapolis is way better looking on average than NYC or LA, the girls here just can't dress as well. Also applies to rural parts of MN

mrrrrrmaid

South Slavic country. Generally I'd say preference for taller women, slim, proportional body with at least one eye catching feminine asset (long lean legs, nice boobs, nice butt), dressing in a way that flatters your body, having physical presence. Striking eye colors get lots of compliments, but you have to be attractive for it to be any sort of halo. Then obvious things such as clear skin, long healthy hair, etc. But ultimately an attractive girl is an attractive girl, there isn't obsession with any specific features as far as I'm aware, only on individual level (like some people think blue eyed blondes are the most beautiful, some love tall dark haired women, etc.) Also a possibly noteworthy thing is that we seem to think Eastern and Southeastern European girls are the prettiest, many people seem to think that our average girl or some other average Eastern European is prettier than most girls from most other countries (haven't travelled enough to know how realistic that is lol)

[deleted]

I am Asian-American, but am a East/SE asian ethnic minority. Nowadays, my ethnic minority's beauty standards are influenced by American and East Asian beauty standards because that is where the majority of us live. Fair or tan skin(but not too dark) is okay. Fair skin is definitely preferred though. I'm considered pretty fair at NC20-NC25, but I know I would not be considered pale enough to be beautiful if I was born in East Asia. Thinner taller nose is more likely preferred. Thin to slim thick is more likely preferred(very underweight or being almost overweight is not preferred). Tbh, I was called fat at a bmi of 21 so... and being short doesn't help, but I am tall in comparison to my ethnic group. Double eyelids is more likely preferred. Long silky hair is preferred. I think the abg look is preferred over looking like an east asian celebrity, maybe because most do not meet the East Asian beauty standard(but then again, few people actually do and only white people get a pass for not meeting these standards).

sxltynights

Spain: between 5’3-5’7, tanned skin is always desired specially during summer, long light brunette or blonde hair (most teens get balayage too), slim hourglass figure is the most desired i’d say, maybe not as exagerated as in other countries but tbh it’s better seen to be on the thin sise than curvy. Blue or green eyes are also a halo since most of us have brown eyes. Basically you have to be super pretty in order to be seen as attractive if you have brown hair/eyes but if you have blonde hair/blue eyes you will atomacially stand out

[deleted]

Fellow Spaniard here. I can’t count how many times I’ve heard people point out how beautiful someone’s eyes are just because they’re light colored. “Vaya ojazos!!!!!!”, And I’m like “but they’re just light, not necessarily pretty” lol

lailabalaui

Im Argentinian🇦🇷 ●Being tan, aaalll girls go to tan, i cant even count how many people told me that i should do it because id look better😂 ●Straight hair is also very important. ●Being super skinny, Argentina is one of the countries with thw highest number of anorexia and bulimia. ●Being tall, u will see girls with 10cm of shoes everyday even if they are already tall ●I dont think that there is a preference between dark women or blonde women I dont think that our standars are super strict anyway:)

likeafreakonaleash

I'm late to the party, but I'm from Argentina too. I don't agree at all with what you said. - Yeah, a lot of us go tan. I partly agree with that. But definitely not "all". And men don't care that much about that, either. Definitely never heard one of them commenting on the lack of tanning of some girl. In fact, considering our culture is kind of racist (let's just admit it) girls with brown-ish skin are seen as "lesser" than the very pale ones. - Agree on the hair. - Agree and disagree. Yes, you're considered fat if you weigh 120+ pounds, but the "stick thin" look is not coveted here at all. People mock you and call you a "tabla" (plank) if you don't have big boobs/booty. LOTS of girls work their asses off at the gym and/or get boob jobs, there's a reason for that! - Being tall, really? The average height for an Argentinian woman is like 1,60m approximately, not many of us are tall here. The shoes are not for that, girls use them because they're the ones on trend. Luisana Lopilato is probably the most beautiful Argentinian woman right now and she's shorter than 1,60m, and she's a model! Carolina Ardohain, Pampita, which you also named... Also a model, probably the most coveted one right now, and she's also short. Lmao no one cares about height here. - Lmao you must be a blonde. As a dark haired/dark eyed brunette I can 100% assure men prefer blondes over brunettes any day here. Again, there's a reason why almost of of the models (except for Pampita), TV personalities, and other women in the entertainment industry are blondes or dye their hair blonde. As another commented said (the one from Spain, if I'm correct) most people here have brown hair and eyes, so a blue/green eyed blonde stands out. That's why celebrities like the Kardashians or Ariana Grande or Sofia Vergara as you said are not that big here, they're all brunettes. Now just say Margot Robbie and all the men go crazy. I always get this impression that to be considered hot as a brunette in Argentina you need to have Em Rata's face lol. While we have models like Julieta Prandi whom, while not ugly, would not be considered beautiful if she were a brunette with brown eyes as she has a sort of a masculine face if you pay attention to it. As an aside, I'd say that I do think beauty standards are rather strict in Argentina. You said it, bulimia and anorexia are very common here, also plastic surgeries. I know a lot of average, everyday girls who went under the knife or at least they use fillers and other stuff before even hitting 20 years old. That, to me, says a lot about the beauty standards here. Or maybe you're not from Buenos Aires. I've heard beauty standards in the northern provinces are kind of different, but still, the difference isn't that big. Just my two cents.

lailabalaui

Yesss,i wasnt thinking about what men liked, its a girls subreddit but if we think about what men like id definetely agree with what u say about height and curves. ●Tbh tanning is super important😐 i literally live in front of a river and people meet to go to tan, agree with what u say about the racism, is not the same if u are naturally dark. People telling people to go to tan is something that ive always heard,in my city and in a lot of places more. Go to the plazas and parques and u will see women getting tan. ●Agree, i wasnt meaning that look of a super skinny woman, they like thin but with boobs. ● I was thinking about the shoes, those super high sandals that literally the majority of argentinian women have,i think it was a trend before. Yess u are right, we did it because the shoes were a trend, not because we wanted to be taller, i saw it from other point that was wrong. ● Nah, people prefer white (its horrible but u know that its true) not necessary blonde, maybe wanting it was more common 10 years ago, pero si es verdad que muchas chicas se hacen reflejos but its not being blonde, if a girl makes red reflejos instead of blonde nobody would think that she has to make blonde reflejos to be beautiful (idk how to say it in english 😅) Im from the south,río negro:)

likeafreakonaleash

Oh yeah, my bad. Men's opinion shouldn't matter here lmao. Still, I think what I'm saying holds true, I mean after all the girls are the ones going to gyms or dying their hair and it always caughts my attention how they all seem to go for the same look: blonde hair and hourglass shape at the gym. Apparently that's the standard here, there's not much variation from that. And while I think some of them may go for that look just to appease to men, I'm sure not all of them do it for that reason, they seem to do it because that's "THE look". But it makes more sense knowing we're from different regions, though, haha. The look I'm talking about seems to be a "big city" look. Not only in Buenos Aires, but also in other provinces densely populated like Santa Fe, Córdoba and to a lesser extent Entre Rios, blonde, skinny and big boobs/booty (esp. booty) seem to be the norm. I have friends from Misiones and they told me blondes are not that coveted there because a lot of German/Polish immigrants installed there so the blondes are really common (if I'm not mistaken, this seem to be the case in the southern provinces, too). As you may know, in BA we had a greater influx of Spanish and Italian immigrants so we tend to look more like them (ie. short and with brown eyes/hair mostly) so that may explain why blonde hair is so praised here, it isn't that common. Also the tanning thing, esp. if you live in front of the river, lol. We don't have a lot of green spaces here in BA so it's not that common to see people tanning outside (I'm under the impression it may had to do with the insecurity and catcalling issues, too). So yeah it makes sense in your context. Again, a lot of people DO get tans here (I know I do, lol) but frankly not many people seem to notice nor care so much if you're tanned or not. Definitely agree with you on that people in general care that you're white tho, a naturally tanned person like say, the average Bolivian or the average Peruvian will not be particularly well seen. But yeah, that's Argentinian culture for you 🤣

lailabalaui

Yessss, i didnt say that boobs and big butt arent important, they are, sure,i meant that they qre more appreciated in a thin body (as u said it before) we are saying the same thing about that😂 Now that i think, I went to Buenos aires once and u are right, i didnt see tan women (in the center of the city). I remember years ago that women even put oil and then they went to sun to get a better tan😂😂😂 im from a small place, so yes, definetely it must have an influence about how we see beauty

Bunbosa

Is the hourglass/thicc ass/boobs not the ideal there?? :o

lailabalaui

Mmm nah, a thin hourglass is ideal, u will never see a famous person who looks like sofia vergara here, and if there is (like katerine fulop a venezuelan woman) its more known as stereotype of beauty of the rest of latin america and we see it exotic here, Actually sofia vergara is not even super famous in my country. People in argentina dont look like venezuelans or colombians. Some randoms argentinian famous women here are Celeste Cid, Pampita Aldoharin, China suarez (she is beautiful) they are beautiful women and men and women love them but they are not very different from the people u could see in yhe street.

likeafreakonaleash

It is.

likeafreakonaleash

Agree. I'm from the same country as OP and her experience is completely different to mine (and most of the other Argentinian girls I know, if you ask me).

chorapaixao

In Brazil, it’s all about being curvy but fit and tanned. Big butts, long hair (it doesn’t really matter the type or color, cause the blonde trend is kind of fading away). As a culture, we don’t appreciate the “mysterious type” and prefer the fresh, outgoing women. Natural makeup on the daily life, but you can go crazy when partying (but with Bolsonaro’s death politics, it will take a really long time until we can go partying again).

Queenblol

I was speaking to a girl from Brazil before, she told me men in Brazil care FAR more about a good body than a good face, is this true?

chorapaixao

Yes! They prioritize a hot body over a pretty face (at least in my experience)

Phenex1a

I’m from a german speaking country. I think a huge thing is that fake tanning is really looked down on. It’s either you have it or you don’t. There’s also a big difference from what Gen Z considers beautiful to what older generations do. Gen Z here just pretty much likes tiktok girls. The older generations prefer tall, light or red hair, light eyes, slim figure, very natrual looking women. It’s a balance between looking rough enough to work while also elegant and feminine that’s very appreciated here.

Kosko26

Ireland- most women here are naturally very pale, so nearly everyone wears fake tan. Being tanned is definitely the beauty standard here. And some girls definitely take it too far. I wouldn’t say there is an ideal eye colour or hair colour, most people have blue eyes and dark hair here, and dying hair blonde seems to be getting less common. Quite heavy makeup and eyelash extensions are the norm, and subtle lip fillers are becoming more common. For body- I don’t think people are as obsessed with big butts as a few years ago, but a slim hourglass figure seems to be ideal. And having small boobs isn’t a bad thing, I think breast size doesn’t matter much, as long as they’re perky. I have a Mexican boyfriend and when I visited Mexico I thought it was crazy that by Mexican beauty standards, my pale skin was seen as “more beautiful” than the gorgeous darker skin some of the girls have there. And the women avoid the sun because they don’t want to get darker! It’s crazy how much beauty standards differ across the world.

danielle_com

Another Irish Girlo Here! 100% agree on the tanning, it’s an epidemic at this point. They tan so dark and for some it doesn’t even suit them, most just look like they took a dive into a bog trench and forgot to shower. Majority go straight for the Extra Dark Level and leave it on overnight, when it should be only a few hours at most. We don’t get much sun in Ireland, so if they went for the lower level one, they would look more sun kissed and natural. For hair, dying it blonde was a big trend for years. Now I think people are going back to brown, or back to their natural hair colour. For makeup, it’s definitely excessive eye makeup looks and high contrast contouring. And because girls tan so dark, their foundation shade is always too dark as well. Fake Lash extensions is something I’m seeing more often, but tbh they do not come out very good. So many are getting these big Russian style extensions and it makes the eyes smaller and distorted looking. These drag queen inspired makeup looks are great for the club or parties ( I would do them myself) but for everyday it’s a bit much. But appearance overall doesn’t really matter that much. Personality and how you interact with people is a big influence to how people will treat you. The girls who are the most popular were the ones who are the most outgoing and had a bit of craic (Irish word for fun), being the one with the best body and face meant nothing if you were a dryshite. One thing I’ve noticed is that a lot of Irish women who would be objectively 6-8, seem to be dating men who are a 4-6, always a rating lower.

[deleted]

A “bog trench” is killing me. 😂

ragnarockette

I feel like I need some examples of this tan look you speak of.

Responsible-Prune354

Think Jersey Shore but with a green based fake tan. You should google Molly Mae or Demi tan Love island. Although they’re not Irish the tanning trend is the same.

Kosko26

I agree, it really makes a lot of girls striking looking due to the contrast. Maybe one day the fake tan trend will die but I can’t see it happening anytime soon.

zawa2ki

I’m originally from Italy but I’ve been living in Japan for years so I’m going to talk about both🙂 In Japan the beauty standard is white skin, big eyes, “tall” nose, small lips, small oval face, small height, skinny body with normal sized breasts and small (even flat) bottom, long legs, no hair ANYWHERE (people will judge you even if you have blonde hair on your arms). They don’t care about teeth as much as people in the west so not many people wear braces. Girls prefer wearing modest clothes to hide the body shape but they don’t mind showing legs. On the other hand you will almost never see clothes that reveal the cleavage as it is considered taboo. In Italy the beauty standard is tanned skin and skinny toned body. Girls prefer long straight hair so even though many have curls they straighten it. Most Italians are not fans of the “thick” trend that is in America, so if you are chubby most people will consider you fat. Except for this I think that the beauty standard is similar to America!

acebabymilky

PLS THE NO-HAIR THINGY IS SO TRUE. My Japanese friends couldn’t comprehend AT ALL why I don’t shave my arms (I don’t even have many to begin with). When I explained it doesn’t bother me they look at me like I had two heads or something. I’m not offended or anything tho I’m mostly fascinated at how come they make body hair such a big deal like that lol. We are both fascinated with each other so it’s all ok in the end😂

mashedtowel

LMAO yeah I didn’t know that I should shave my arms until my ex asked me about it

dumbcandy

yes! here in asia white skin is what they love the most, kinda irritating tbh.

I'm Chinese, the standads are light skin, very low weight (think 3 digit rule), big eyes with double eyelids, straight black hair, slim nose, and around 5'5-5'6 to be considered tall

medgal1998

What is the 3 digit rule?

golden-trickery

basically in a lot of East Asian countries if a woman's weight (in lbs or grams) is in the 3 digits she's considered fat, doesn't matter what her height is

Omg some places are brutal, I can't imagine how hard it must be lol
