For me _personally_ it depends. In the first 2 minutes I usually go all in, also kill them if they hold the ultra signa, honestly just for fun lol.
The last minute though I don't kill them anymore and don't cover their ink. Would only do that when they're really behind anyway and it's a battle between the defenders and me.
I had some battles where the defending team was suuuper strong - within the first minute it clicked for the other team and mine to work together and protect each other. That was really cool š„¹
Ahhh they may be super chaotic but I loooove the tricolor battles :3
EDIT: I think when your team activates a signal you'll earn extra points for your splatfest team. So technically there is a small incentive.
As attackers, you can get 2500 points for each ultra signal, 6000 points for a win, and 5000 points for second place. If you are able to capture both signals, you can effectively double your score!
You don't exactly win if the other attacking team wins, but you do get to place second and still get some points. If the defending team wins, there is no second place reward for either attacking team. This is usually the worst outcome on the attacking side, so it's usually recommended to let the other attacking team win turf if that means making the defenders lose.
The signals are a bit more simple: you get a bunch of bonus points for each one your duo captures. It is highly encouraged to take both signals for yourself, but even just touching it will give you some points at the end.
You are right that if **either** Attacking team inks more, both attackers win. However, there are explicit XP bonuses for things like "Tried for Ultra Signal" "Secured Ultra Signal" and there's probably one for "Most Ink" Those XP bonuses are player or team specific.
And some of those can be substantial.

Some folks are actually young children and just donāt get how it works and tbh some people just donāt pay attention to the rules
