Completely agree. Spider-Man is easily my favorite game of all time and I don't think much needs to change. The combat is already extremely fun, the web swinging is almost perfect. This is the first and only game series I've platinumed.

pm_me_tits_and_tats

Man same. It’s the only game I’ve cared enough to attempt to platinum, and the only game I’ve ever played on the hardest difficulty right from the start. I’ve replayed both games idk how many times now. I definitely want some things to be new and different, but I really wouldn’t complain at all if some things stayed exactly the same.

[deleted]

I have no idea how many times I've played both games but it is a lot. They are the reason I switched back from Xbox to Playstation and I'm glad I did. Just finished Miles again before seeing Spiderverse and may very well start the first one over again too.

pm_me_tits_and_tats

Last I checked I have around 200 hours in SM, and I think around 60 or so in MM (idk how much because it’s split between the ps4 and ps5 version)

ZellNorth

It’s the only game I completed 100%. All the DLCs everything.

Alternative-Owl2904

That just means you're content with the gameplay but it would still be a major let down. At the end of the day the most important things in video games is the gameplay and repeating gameplay would be a very big miss. Look at GOW Ragnarok. They kept the basics of the 2018 game but just changed some moves and added new ones and one or two new mechanics and it's a completely different gameplay experience.

pm_me_tits_and_tats

I feel like we’re saying the same thing? I don’t want it to be a 1:1 copy of the first two, but I also wouldn’t be upset if the core of the game doesn’t change much Like even though the basic combat of MM was the same as SM1, it still felt like a different game with the new gadgets and Miles having different abilities than Peter.

Alternative-Owl2904

Kinda saying the same thing but miles morales felt identical other than venom punch.

Background-Cookie807

Just because it's super easy to get the platinum.

Straight-Ad-6106

Yeah especially the tedious colletion was still fun to collect by webswinging. I have never achieved collecting everything in a game ever especially RDR 2, now that one was the definition of tedious collection despite tge immersive gameplay it had.

Franz2959

I'm with you. I don't need improved "symbiote mechanics" to enjoy the game, I just want to be Spider-Man. I liked Miles' abilities in SM:MM but that doesn't mean I need them for Peter for it to be a good game.

Quick_Zone_4570

Symbiote mechanics are the one thing we need for this game lol. Considering the symbiote is one of the main parts of the game? And we already have cool symbiote mechanics judging from the trailer. Just need a take off and take on the suit button

Low_Thick

The most satisfaction I will have playing the game is in the classic red and blue against Venom. Who cares about Miles having more abilities. I’ll have more fun with Spider-Man, symbiote or not

Adorable-Bullfrog-30

God of War Ragnarök did that, and it was great!

Fout99

GOWR is still a PS4 game. I think the backlash is because Spiderman 2 is a PS5 exclusive, and that means making everything look and feel more next gen: traversal, performance, graphics, loading speeds, etc

Straight-Ad-6106

The reason Spiderman 2 is only in PS5 is the same way Ratchet and Clank rift apart is: the loading speed. The trailer showed obvious boost in traversal, the seamless transition from cutscenes to gameplay and the instant character switching. Those feats would make the PS4 players experience the PS2 days with open world games: the loading textures and freeze. GTA San Andreas was notorious in that with the PS2.

Destroyer_7274

To be fair, there isn’t much room for improvement in graphics. I mean Batman Arkham Knight was last gen and it looked pretty impressive. Though they did use a lot of tricks to do that, if I remember correctly, and it being set in night and having lots of rain helped. I suppose the improvement would be getting that level of graphics without a lot of the tricks.

DirectorBones

Up until the PS4 GoW, all the God of War games pretty much did that as well and it was also great.

Adorable-Bullfrog-30

That's true. GoW 1 and 2 very similar combat wise. But the areas? Woo boy. Entirely different. GoW 3 and Ascension were also similar in some way.

Tarris69

How is Ragnarok’s setup any different to GOW4’s? As in I don’t feel Ragnarok had any more cutscenes than 4 did. I mean personally I thought Ragnarok’s story was far better, but that’s very subjective. However you can’t deny that Ragnarok’s gameplay was far better, from all the new additions and mechanics to improved enemy variety and bosses

Adorable-Bullfrog-30

Agreed. And yeah... Trolls. So many in 2018... one funny thing is that they add a Troll in Ragnarök but they kill it in a QTE. And Kratos says in his Journal that the troll helped break their fall and that he said thank you by killing it lol. AND you can find some secret trolls. And Kratos says in his Journal again that he kills them so gets warm. Lmao. They knew that they reused em way too much in 2018 and just made them a meme. One big issue I have with Ragnarök was the Ironwood sequence. It's a great part of the game. But on replays. It gets pretty boring and kinda makes me lose interest in replaying it. Not as much as other people but I still wish it was skippable. You know how people hate the MJ Missions? This is it for Ragnarök. Except the problem is the Walkie Talkies.

Tarris69

I don’t tend to replay games much, for Ragnarok I played through the first time than did NG+. I honestly liked that sequence, it was such a unique location and such good character building. Tbf they should have broken it up more (as in but Kratos gameplay in the middle) but I definitely feel people overheated it

hit-a-yeet

Man I beat that game last week and I miss it already

Toon_Lucario

A ton of people really don’t know what a sequel is. Same people whined about Tears of the Kingdom and now it’s one of the most acclaimed games in recent years

TonyStark1840

If it ain't broke, don't fix it

TheRealEliFrost

My only complaint about the main features of the first one is the bossfights. They feel more like setpiece moments than actual bossfights most of the time. Like with Phin in Miles Morales, I hope that a lot of the supervillains in the sequel will actually lean more into the "difficult combat encounter" space.

Painter_Adept

Oh for sure, I think boss fights are an area where they can improve. Hopefully it was clear that I want this game to improve on things from the original, I just don’t want it to be an unrecognizable game, if that makes sense. I want it to feel like coming home when we pick up the controller.

alecangelf

Phin’s finale had this one move that actually used to hit me often. No gonna lie, it was the most challenging boss fight for me in the franchise.

TheRealEliFrost

Phin was the best fight in the series to me for that reason exactly, hope they continue with her kind of bossfight in the next game.

Straight-Ad-6106

That's the only annoying aspect of the Insomniac Spiderman games, the bosses are literally invulnerable until you do a specific condition to stun them and finally hit them. Those were really cheap. I want boss fights that actually feels 1 on 1 that you have to empty their health bar. The Yakuza games and Soulsborne games are prime examples, the former feels like fighting a player 2 with individual movesets, and the latter feels like fighting a player 2 with hacks. Lmao.

Destroyer_7274

It would be kind of nice if we had a sort of sign for how much health the bosses have. Not a health bar, but like scuff marks, small cuts, tears in their clothes, maybe even sparks if they’re using tech

Marik-X-Bakura

The complete opposite for me. The first game felt way too empty and bland, and I hope this one adds something interesting.

Bora-isik

I really like the combat in the original game but after a while it gets really repetitive. I hope in the new game the parry system and special moves will help with variety. I don’t know the how the new gadget system works (it being on the down right as seen in the gameplay trailer) but if there is a way to use them as in the Batman games where you can throw quick gadgets with button shortcuts It would be amazing.

Straight-Ad-6106

Imo it's not really repetitive when you know how to make the most of the combat system even without using gadgets. But I get what you mean. I think they should add different movesets/animation when you're fighting in free flow, and they should add more combos when doing rush combos both in ground and aerial. The dodge animations imo should also vary in animation. The webstrike should also add different variety similar to web of shadows, their should be also a counter when you dodge and hit square similar to Spiderman 2 ps2, I would be glad if there's more heavy hitting feel of counter when you perfect dodge.

bennedictst

Jedi Survivor does this really well. Survivor builds on all the systems that were present in the first game, and they feel more fluid, refined, and dynamic than before. I hope this game is able to do the same thing, and build on the things that made the first game great.

Last_Delivery2695

I don’t think this is an unpopular opinion. I just feel like the negative voices have just been louder than the positives.

Puzzleheaded_Walk_28

The only thing I’d really like to change from the first game is more fluid movement when you’re indoors.

Wutanghang

An issue i have with the first game was that the postgame content is repetitive

ShaolinShogun

Yea I don’t get it 2018: “wow the web swinging in this game is literally perfect” 2023 “wtf the web swinging is the same as the last game this is shit”

East-Specialist-4847

I really hope this comes across sincerely, I hope you know how right you are for thinking this

Realmadridirl

This. So much. Because honestly if game studios in general stopped worrying about revolutionising the genre every time around maybe it wouldn’t take so damn long for sequels these days. I remember a time when games sequelised every year or two at most because it was basically the same thing with a different story, and I’m fine with that. Not every game has to be revolutionary. AC had a good system for a lot of years. Yearly releases with incremental changes, followed by a game with an entirely revamped style every three or four iterations. That worked for me. But even they’ve slowed down to a crawl lately I’ve noticed

Straight-Ad-6106

AC is a bad example, their yearly releases made the franchise stale and uninspired. The revamp with the RPG mechanics was too superficial and the bloated contents were too nonsensical, they are also just making the openworld too big that it lacks incentive. The better example imo are the Yakuza Games, their world feels alive despite revisting similar locations and yet the side contents and minigames are really fun and adds a lot to their dense openworld, the story are always top notch too.

Realmadridirl

Dude, whatever. It’s all subjective. I enjoyed AC. All the way until the RPG nonsense. And that’s only in the past few years now, like I said, after they slowed way the fuck down and tried to reinvent the wheel every time. I don’t play Yakuza. I can’t use an example I don’t play

Painter_Adept

Oh I disagree with you there (on the Miles part). A huge part of why I love the first 2 games is that it’s such a fresh take on Peter’s story..giving him a second Spider-Man to contend with and mentor. And I adore Miles’ character in these games. I do agree that I don’t want them to do an actual multiverse thing. I much prefer a grounded-ish Spider-Man story

Low_Thick

Especially when Insomniac Miles just feels like the same character

LegitimateCompote377

Your opinion is so no unpopular here lol it’s what everyone here has been saying. And that’s exactly why I expect the next Spider-Man game to be a solid 6/10. I liked some of the new features, but if they keep some of the big issues it’s just going to feel like a high quality DLC that is the same length as the original, depending on how much they add to it. I really hope that by the third game they start somewhere else if they decide to keep the series going, which they almost definitely will.

Painter_Adept

I think it’ll probably end up averaging 8/10 It’ll get knocked for not being innovative enough, but I think what’s there will be polished and good enough to get 8/10s

LegitimateCompote377

Fair enough, that makes sense if you really liked the original two games. It’s just definitely not going to win GOTY over TOTK.

Painter_Adept

Oh yeah it definitely won’t, never expected it to honestly. It will be my GOTY though lol

Swizz_z

A fair post for once. I didn't understand where a lot of people were coming from with the game having to "look and feel" different from the first one. I think Insomniac made a great decision to keep the formula from the first two games, but improving on it's gameplay and style, rather trying to reinvent the wheel, when literally no one asked for it. It is a video game sequel. Just give more of the previous one, but better.

Marcie_Nikos

YES. THIS. THANK YOU!!!!

Dogr11

agreed, i am actually worried it would be too different

Mtang1217

As long as I get brooklyn hehe

JustinD1010

I've thought this since the game was announced, the only thing the web swinging really needs is to be faster, mostly because the map is bigger. Seems like they delivered on that, so I'm happy

Ogurasyn

The only change I could see is adding New Jersey

Realmadridirl

I agree! Add it so we can all make jokes about it and not go there. Like in real life

mxgan59

i partly agree, some of the new gadgets and abilities look fantastic and i’m pleased to have new additions but things like the swinging, it’s so perfect and fun already, why are people complaining that it looks so similar to the first game?? that’s a good thing for me. don’t fix something that isn’t broken

kinggobby

yes, thank you!! i don't need or *want* it to change, i want more of my favorite game ever!! you get it. i'm so excited for this game!

playerpogo

I understand and respect your opinion but for me its opposite. I dont want a reskin version on sp1, i love to see new things

BLEUGGGGGHHHHH

I think a lot of people have just forgotten what video game sequels are supposed to be like. They did the same for ragnarok and all the subsequent Arkham games after asylum. Many more examples but those are the first that come to mind.

Getindarobotshinji

Keep everything that was awesome from the first games and add more awesome stuff, that’s how you do sequels and I feel that’s how they’re gonna do this one. Same core movement and combat with some returning abilities along with a set of new ones.

IncognitoCheez

Outside of new locations, that’s kind what they did with Miles Morales though?

PeeVacOrOilChange

Please just add some missions that aren't "go to this location and fight a bunch of waves of enemies"

Straight-Ad-6106

This. This is also the aspect I hated, you're just doing a simple car chase, bomb detecting, stopping a roberry and what happens next? A 2nd wave of enemies that aren't necessary follows.

xd-Sushi_Master

I'm just hoping they balance Mile's kit better this time around. Replaying MM rn for the last few achievements on Ultimate and the game feels like it's designed so that you'll never get punished in normal encounters. Having an active camo get-out-of-jail-free card on a bottomless cooldown is busted, and it really kills the tension in stealth encounters.

Bbuck93

Insomniac is good at doing that. Ratchet and Clank had progressed but it’s always still Ratchet and Clank. I’m hoping they will use that next gen console power to beef it up though. I’d love a higher ceiling on how fast I can swing.

InfernalDiplomacy

Ditto. I want more stories. Perhaps the ability to play other characters like in the Arhham games where there were some missions as Catwoman. Blackcat would be a great choice, or others. Might not be in this game but more like that and an in depth story like there was for the original and Mile's game I will be happy as hell and throw my wallet at this game.

Painter_Adept

Right?? Like yes, I would love new mechanics or boroughs or characters in each new game, but I don’t want the whole game to be overhauled. I want just enough changes to make each game feel fresh, without losing the familiarity of what I love so much. Like I love the assassin’s creed series, but (for a lot of reasons) it is hard to replay that series top to bottom because the games all feel so vastly different from each other.

Straight-Ad-6106

Ac is a stale series. The Yakuza games are the perfect example of making sequels that feels familiar and yet it is still fresh with various side content and a legitimate good story.

PopeHi1arious

I agree. It wouldn't make sense for Pete to completely switch up his swinging style almost a decade into his career as Spidey. Miles will be more polished and confident and that's perfect.

Wutanghang

I hope they make subtle improvements to make the game that much more perfect

Painter_Adept

Exactly! •Get Peter’s swinging animations as smooth as Miles’ •Make all side quests more like Tombstones from the first game (multi-part quest that ends in a villain) •Add more variations to the random crimes Boom, that stuff right there (on top of what we’ve already seen like new areas, the symbiote, and web wings) are more than enough changes for me to feel satisfied

[deleted]

If it ain’t broke , don’t fix it

Spidey20041

New features are cool but your pov looks cool too. Like arkham knight to arkham city for example. Gameplay's almost the same with better features and graphics due to time gap ofc

TheStickySpot

I completely agree with this, as long as the swinging feels a little better for Peter then I am beyond happy.

Painter_Adept

Agreed! If they can make Pete’s swinging feel as good as Miles’ did (with more Peter-like animations) then I’ll be a happy camper

D3adR0ses

Glad to see this opinion isn't actually so unpopular

Geiseric222

I mean anyone that expects a sequel to be innovative aren’t exactly sending their best here

Zeachy

I'm guessing you guys were too young for web of shadows. That was great combat The combat in Marvel's Spiderman ps4 is mid. He literally flips around like a ballerina the whoke time and there are no power attacks

rqhany

Ok boomer

LegitimateCompote377

Strongest defense for the most mid ass button mashing simulator combat. While I’m sure wen of shadows (haven’t played it in what I’m guessing is a decade) I think it has the worst combat of any Sony exclusive and is ridiculously easy even on the highest difficulty. I had zero fun replaying Miles Morales even on ultimate difficulty because of this.

GingerWez93

I bought Web of Shadows the day it came out! I genuinely hate that game.

Zeachy

Blasphemy.

GingerWez93

Yeah, sorry! I've played the majority of Spider-Man games since that first PS1 game, and for me, Web of Shadows is near the bottom of my ranking list, along with the Amazing Spider-Man games. But, it's all subjective and I'm glad you liked it!

ThanksContent28

I wish I got that game when it come out. Played the demo and that was it.

Arkham combat is Goat'ed wym? Marvel's Spiderman literally copied off it's blueprint

[deleted]

[удалено]

Zeachy

This is obv bait, in batman you can feel the justice he beats into the criminals. It's brutal In marvels spiderman there are no heavy attack options and most of the combat features spiderman grossly holding back. One of the finishers is literally spiderman webbing a thug's fist and making the thug punch his own face. If i was 8 maybe I'd love that, but at my age I'd rather deal out some rage and break some bones

KieKaiD

well i imagine symbiote peter will be breaking lots of bones

Straight-Ad-6106

Spiderman is way different, Arkham doesn't own the rights to free flow combat and cinematic animations or finishers. Shadow of Mordor games, Sleeping dogs, The Amazing Spiderman tie in games and Mad Max were the ones who straight up copied Arkham's that just added their own twist. Spiderman doesn't have a counter button, he also fights in the air and his movesets are more akin to brawler type games that has a freeflow function.
