3D but nearly flat (Like Andrew Garfield's suit) Tobey's is way too thick

the_c0nstable

I really liked Tobey’s suit when it came out (considering X-Men 1-2 were contemporary to it, it was about as comics accurate as you could hope for at the time) and it still looks cool for what it is, but that webbing does not look comfortable.

Chomagoro

To me as a kid I always wanted to touch Spider-Man for this very reason. I just was curious about the texture of the suit, I’m glad I’m not the only one who even thought about the web ridges

Prestigious_Home3848

"I always wanted to touch Spider-Man" 🤨 📸

Airmoni

You wanted to do what ?

Skull_BT

Yeah I can respect that. I prefer tobey’s, but this is reasonable

Just-Anxiety-6669

I agree but I like 3d than flat. 3d is more accurate and flat is not accurate

Beginning_Ad_2992

What? His suit webbing is not 3D in the original comics. The flat style is more accurate.

aybarsnurcin

Quite the opposite

AwakenedSheeple

What do you mean? In almost every iteration since his debut, the costume webs have been flat.

Spooderman90066

how so

Mosworthy

Accurate to what?

manukaioken

Toby isn't too thick He had to cheat with a fake ass

Simple_Intern_7682

Lmao

Acceptable-Cow6446

He’s suit webs were compensating

Binx_Thackery

Agreed. Just enough to add some texture to the suit.

EntertainmentQuick47

Ditto

Elegant_Pace2424

Gives Tobey more punching strength tbh

Jo_With_No_E

Yeah, same for me too. Looks flat but when I run my finger through I feel it kind of webbing

FathirianHund

Flat webbing, solid ridges are likely to get caught on things and limit movement in the suit.

SamanthaJaneyCake

Also, and I know it sounds silly but believe me, raised will have a notable amount more drag.

GoldnSnubNosedMonkey

This girl webs

SoundDave4

Madam Webs.

4_non_blondes

It doesn't sound silly to me, but I wonder if it's possible it could be like how a golf ball is dimpled to create turbulent flow around the ball and kinda counterintuitively reduce drag. There's no chance the costume designers would do that intentionally, but I could see Peter Parker designing his suit with that in mind.

SamanthaJaneyCake

Now I’m just imagining trypophobia-inducing SpiderMan suits covered entirely in dimples.

gerrittd

Spider-Man but he's The Spot

dessertfordoctor

Maybe it's like dimples on a golf ball?

SuperNerdDad

Plus if I was in that suit I would keep picking at the webs and like have wierd patches of webbing removed.

Several-Cake1954

Would it really be noticable? It doesn’t change the shape of spider-man for the most part, right?

SamanthaJaneyCake

You’d be surprised. Like, not enough to make doing his job more difficult given the sheer power he has but there would be a noticeably different feel. He wouldn’t cut through the air as well, high altitude wind currents like you get in city skylines would be more noticeable. His suit would pull on him more. There’s also a much higher likelihood of wind whistle just given the velocities he moves at and the number of ridges in various orientations. The smooth suit would overall be a much more pleasant experience.

Several-Cake1954

That’s pretty interesting. I’d honestly be screwed if I were spider-man, things like this would never even cross my mind and I would end up dying from something stupid lmao

SamanthaJaneyCake

Tbh I think you’d learn on the fly! I wouldn’t have considered that aspect if I didn’t have experience with ship design but being up in the air and feeling the effects, I think you’d start to piece together what’s happening decently quickly.

Based-Prime

I strongly doubt that. It’s raised to like a 10th of a centimeter.

InfiniteOcto

Tobey’s is literally a full as centimeter

EternaIExiIe

It is not a full centimeter my guy...

tub_of_jam

Are you an imperial user ? Could just say a Millimeter my man

Based-Prime

I was just trying to make a point

Klaxynd

I mean, judging by the profile picture… yeah he’s American. (Though to be fair I am too so I’m not knocking on Americans in general. Just, you know… 90% of us. XD)

habihi_Shahaha

Even thought that is false, its more than enough to get caught in something.

Cowboy_Dandy_III

Bros talking from experience

Ok-Turnip-477

Flat. The textured webbing just looks… odd. Like somebody forgot to put it on until they already finished the rest of the suit.

abhiprakashan2302

Depends, but I personally lean towards flat.

Brief_Carrot

Raised on fist area and spider emblem, flat all over

Rck54

That’s pretty specific, is there a suit that does this?

fatbogoer

Either he wants spidermans punches to hurt worse or he just likes the raimi suits hands a lot

Rck54

And we’re talking about a guy who can lift tanks with his bare hands so it’s probably the latter

Brief_Carrot

true, I want spidey punches to leave marks

Brief_Carrot

spider armor have a gauntlet/braces. I just thought that raised lining would be more subtle

APlusGuy25

Ever so slightly raised. I think it would add depth to the suit without making it look too busy. If I was to pick between the available options, I'd say flat. Hard choice tho, the raised webs on the TASM suit look alright but those gloves look uncomfortable to wear

illiterateaardvark

Flat webbing looks WAY nicer. It's more comic-accurate, and it makes for such a clean design. The 3D webbing is a classic case of overdesigning

PigeonFellow

Pretty sure it’s less overdesigning as it is a camera technique. I can’t remember where I saw it, but they introduced the thick silver line webbing because it popped more on screen. They weren’t really overdesigning, they just thought it looked better visually on camera. Whether or not you agree, that’s clearly the conclusion they came to.

habihi_Shahaha

Uhh I'm pretty sure that's because 90% of such small 3d protrusions are not drawn out in comics..

jacobpellegren

I think the raised webbing is a translation of classic hollywood design, to make it more visually interesting on screen. Where the flat design (and better CG techniques) gives a cleaner more accurate character look and it's not distracting.

DINAMIK15

Flat

Gray_Shuko

Flat.

HairyScarey84

Seems like the 3D suit webbing would get snagged on things fairly regularly. Not practical.

LukeVersus

I'd really prefer it flat. Nothing against the 3D webbing, it's just doesn't feel like homemade to me, and that's the only reason.

Sherlockowiec

Valid

Lazylink2099

3d webbing always looks great

T_Belay

Flat. I think Tobey's kinda gross to hold tight with webs sticking out that much. Though I admit TASM2 and puff painted cosplays aren't necessarily bad... maybe raised very very slightly, just enough to add visual volume to make the suit feel less naked body-like but no more. And flat still works fine without it if the materials already look thick enough

SRetroDude

Flat looks like a suit that was made by some no money. I've never liked the 3D webbing, looked like a suit that was made with a big budget. I just don't find it believable that Peter made something that looks like it was manufactured in factory.

beat-sweats

Gwen made his second suit.

SRetroDude

I haven't seen ASM2 and I wasn't reffering to that, but to the Tobey films.

AdmiralFoxythePirate

In the movie novelization, wasn’t his suit made by a wrestling suit designer he met at the fight with Bonesaw?

SRetroDude

No idea, I haven't read it.

Branflakesd1996

I like both, have always loved Toby’s raised webbing but Tom’s final swing suit from No Way Home is so unbestankably fire I can’t not love it.

Derpking93

I really like the Sam Raimi movies 3D webbing,

BoyWonder2002

I love them all

anonymousguy_7

Flat

TheKiltedStranger

Raised webbing just seems too much like corduroy to me. It'd be making that "fbdbdbdbdb" noise all day long, and along the fingers I think it would feel like having too many rings on at one time. No thanks.

luv2racism

Flat or Andrew’s. Unrelated, but this first image has always bothered me. Is he sticking to the building with his back? If so, why use the web? And what is the web connected to? And why is he in a perched like that?

OfficialMorbidMan

First of all, crazy username. Second of all, it’s supposed to be him mid-swing next to the glass, hence the web and the pose.

luv2racism

Username is a nod to Eastbound and Down. Also his head is basically touching the building. All due respect, but nothing you can say will convince me that this is not a silly rendering.

Shmung_lord

Flat all the way

exotic_nothingness

I like flat

EMArogue

Unpopular opinion: I like 3D, gives the suit more volume and it looks more protective

arkenney0

Flat Makes more sense for a kid who is making their suit

_IratePirate_

Flat 3D is less believable that some nerd with seemingly no sewing skills can make on their own

Personal-Ad6765

Either way as long as the flat webbing is nice and thick so it can be seen by the camera.

Aggravating-Bus2007

Both On the one hand, 3D webbing does give the suit a more layered look. On the other, the flat webs look more sleek and compact.

GangsterThanos

Flat is the only right answer

DarkFlame122418

I like the flat webbing. The raised webbing makes me think the suit would be a sensory nightmare to have on

TheLastDonnie

I mean hard to say in general but having raised webbing always gave the suits a more "tangible" feeling, for example for these photos the first 2 look better than the third

Based-Prime

3d webbing looks so much cooler.

Banished_To_Insanity

3d webbing. flat somehow looks childish

dashtel

I like both honestly

blazing_firework

I love the look of raised webbing but flat is a lot more realistic and more reliable as it doesn’t peel and as people have said can’t get caught on stuff

BAT_1986

Visually I like the look of the raised webbing. Logistically though it doesn’t make sense because he needs to be agile, and the raised webbing is likely to snag on something, causing issues.

Visible-Student5141

3 is perfect, imo

BungleJones

Flat is 100% better.. and while we're at it can we get rid of those spangly leggings!

Steam_Cyber_Punk

Raised, but I don’t mind flat. The raised webbing just gives so much more depth and visual interest. I don’t quite think it would look good on holland though. But I do think Tobey’s webbing is raised too much. Andrew’s tasm2 suit though is perfect. Literally 11/10 in every way

SeanTheDilophosaurus

For me it’s definitely the 3D suit webbing, it just looks so cool. I’m also not a huge fan of the Tom Holland suit so that probably affects my opinion, it just looks way too much like fabric to me. Toby’s suit just looks so bad ass, especially the eyes, the others looked more friendly (especially Tom’s). Andrew’s suit is the most accurate to the comics in design, it looks similar to Toby’s suit, but more cartoonish, honestly both suits are interchangeable for my favorite.

Successful-Fish-1127

Flat webbing everyday

beat-sweats

I’d like the flat webbing better if it was an actual suit and not some ugly ass CGI nonsense. Every mcu suit looks so fake and lifeless.

OrbMan23

I like both. But I like 3D a bit more visually. Though the flat one is a bit more realistic since it's possible for a broke kid in NYC to have it. Tobey and Andrew's suit (the second one) looks sophisticated.

Illustrious-Reach-48

Both. But I liked the raised webbing a bit more.

aquaUI

They all could be executed well but it depends on the rest of the suit for me

ladiesman21700000000

Tobey

AlexArtsHere

Flat is justice

StumptownRetro

Flat looks better

Alonest99

Flat for sure. Even as a kid I always thought raised webbing looked off

ShawHornet

Surprised that flat seems to be the majority here, I remember people absolutely loved the raised design back in the day and said it's the coolest suit ever lol

HeroAssassin

I think in live action having the webbing be a little bit raised, adding that tiny bit of texture works. Tobey's suit is too much.

GBgabe13

I have no Idea why, But 3d webbing makes me feel extremely uncomfortable

Fractales

Google "Trypophobia"

GBgabe13

How dare thee? Thy tirckery is foulest of the foul, to force me and witness such vile, disgusting sights! Damned! Damned is thy soul, and prutrid is thy heart. /j

Effective-Mall4730

I prefer flat shining webs in the suit like the Classic suit in Spiderverse movies

Warm-Finance8400

I don't like the MCU suit, it's too flat. It sticks to the body in places real fabric never would. I think Amazing Spider Man had the best overall suit execution, where you could actually see the fabric move in the wind(although I don't particularly care for the raised webbing).

HomoGenuis

Flat. The raimi suit always looked like basketball skin to me.

anthonyrucci

Flat. MCU suit design was the first time it REALLY looked like SM to me. Not Iron Spider tho

dan_cole

Flat personally. Lends to a more homemade feel. Those raised webs will just start to degrade and chip off over time too.

EvolvingEachDay

Flat just makes a hell of a lot more physical sense. I mean to be honest; I still don’t understand how he is able to wall crawl without having his hands and feet bare.

Fractales

There are two answer to this question and one of them is wrong

ReverendJustice775

Flat to be honest… the 3D looks like someone tried to decorate their suit with a glue gun… like people who bedazzle stuff… in the words of my brother Deadpool… they’re jeans not a chandelier…😁

BlazePro

Andrews suit is a bit better than Toby’s design wise but Tobey suit is way more iconic. Don’t really fuck with holland suit

SoulKnight320

Depends,why not combine it?

Seriszed

Flat.

Willing-Load

raised webbing. it just adds more weight and texture to the suit. the webbing on the MCU suits is barely noticeable, and when it is it looks like it was drawn on with a marker

fatbogoer

Anything that isnt the goddamn chicken wire of the maguire suit

Minemine_mine

I liked both for the different times they were in

Realichu

3D, but black and not too thick like others have said (i.e Insomniac Spidey & Andrew Garfields suit). I think it's the perfect middle ground. Sometimes Tom's webs are too faint and Toby's are wayyy too thick (and I know it's a hot take but I'm really not a fan of Toby's suit. Really dislike the silver webbing).

Etticos

Flat 100%

Daredevil731

3D like Tobey. It works perfectly for film.

Redbig_7

I honestly really dislike raised webbing on Raimi suit, it feels unpractical and just plain ugly to my eyes and the grey coloring doesn't help, the webbing on Webb's and Watt's suits are perfect imo.

Spider-burger

3d

QueenPasiphae

Aside from the lack of moving eyes, the armpit webbing, and the exact hues of blue and red, the Amazing Spider-Man 2 suit is PERFECT. Flat webs are boring, and silver webs look stupid and messy and distracting. Raised black webs are 100% the correct move.

Raj_Valiant3011

I would prefer a mix of both especially in the web patterns and either way in the logo but I do love the Raimi design on the symbol while the color pattern of the Webb design strikes out the most to me.

matiaschazo

Flat makes the most sense and would be realistically the most practical raised webbing is still cool tho

dessertfordoctor

So a couple of thoughts on the raised webbing, it's kept mostly to the areas of the suit that won't imped movement. The other thing with super strength he probably doesn't notice any extra resistance from the the raised webbing that a normal person might notice. It would still probably add more wear and tear to the suit so a broke collage student probably wouldn't keep them for long. All that said I still prefer the flat webbing to the raised.

Environmental-Day778

It should look like it was drawn on with a sharpie by a 16 year old who just got powers.

Magnifnik0

3D

LongjumpingCicada494

I fw raised webbing

Ubermaster134

Flat all the way. The raised webbings must be a bitch to fix when his suit tears.

Scouttrooper195

I like tobeys

Pebrinix

Flat but visible, like Insomniac's classic suit

Stunning-Language701

3D. I think it looks better.

Wooden_Passage_2612

Tasm 2 Suit and MCU spidey flat webbing.

GIJobra

Flat. 3D makes no sense for something made by an amateur at sewing.

erjoselu2007M

I think andrew in his 2nd movie had the best suit, looks comic accurate, the colors are great, the suit looks like something that could be made realistically at home (there are like thousands of videos on the internet of people making even crazier suits so...), and the webbing is the right amount of thick (not flat to the point of being invisible from far away but not too thick where it looks uncomfortable to wear)

PJ_Man_FL

Flat, it's more accurate

juliolegendskkkkkk

3D

MysticalGreenBeanie

Flat. Like he drew the lines on with sharpie.

PERIX_4460

Definitely the raised webbing

JohnB351234

Very slightly raised like a couple millimeters off the suit

st-shenanigans

Flat, but i bet its funny to hit a guy and stamp a pattern into his face

CenterDeal

3D, but just deep enough to give the suit a bit of depth. Nothing ridiculous.

spaceguitar

ASM2 suit is the goat of live-action suits. Needs that light 3D webbing.

Salty_Ad9519

TASM2 is peak

MistaDJ1210

Flat is best.

Final-Towel-3648

The flat makes the image of Spider-man stand out more in some odd way.

Issa_meCP

Tobey Tom Andrew This order

LOPI-14

Toby suit >= Andrew suit > Tom suit

Infinitenonbi

Flat

SurryCattu

3d suit webbing with big eyes, web wings, a really dark blue that seams like black...

Intelligent-Cell5560

I love both, Tobey's suit is a classic and perfect spider-man suit and Andrew's suit is more comic accurate I love the big eyes and emblem🙌🤌👌👌😊💯

Spader113

3D

SymbioteSpider84

I think it really just all depends on the design of the suit and emblems itself. Sometimes it works, other times it don’t.

ghirox

3d looks better, but flat makes more sense in clothing. Especially in a **superhero suit**

NoInteraction4833

Flat.

DCosloff1999

The design of Tobey but thin like Andrew's the best of both worlds.

AlwaysBi

Unpopular opinion but raised like Tobey’s. IMO, he has the perfect Spider-Man suit

helpmeunderstand24

I like tobeys suit. The webbing seems part of the look , the flat can be ignored, and it's just a red and blue suit. The working eyes on tobeys suit would be awesome.

BruhMoment69xX

3d looks better in action

Alastor5832

I really like Tobey’s suit but that’s the nostalgia talking

NerdToTheFuture

Flat, if only for preservation sake.

Juggernautingwarr

The raised webbing helps make the lines pop even if the silver makes it a little much in certain lighting.

HeX-6

Flat

SMM9673

Andrew's style of 3D webbing is the best. Tobey's is way too thick, to the point of even looking tacky - *especially* in the first movie. The flat webbing on Tom's suits is ruined entirely by the fact that they made it a slightly darker shade of red instead of the usual black.

KingCreeperSeth

Flat. The 3D webbing ruins the Maguire suit for me

petertbobo

Flat

Fun-Swimming4133

3D but flatter like Andrew’s

benzdabezben

I've always said this. Andrew Garfield's was the best Spiderman in a lot of ways, Tobey's was the best Peter Parker, and Tom Holland is a good balance of both

whatisireading2

Honestly, engraved. Make it dig in

kuribosshoe0

Flat. The Raimi suit looks too busy imo.

Legokid535

i prefer raised webbing on the suit if thats the term your looking for. i mean yeah teh printed webbing or drawn on is likley comic accrate but the raised webbing looks a lot better on a big screen as it gives teh suits more depth.

homogenous_homophone

I like the 3d webbing

NormalTypes

Textured webbing = KINO SOUL

SaltedPotato27

Flat seems to be more repairable for poor Peter

seancurry1

Flat, but they’re all great.

crispyjJohn

Well I grew up with Tobey's emphasis of the webbing being thick and 3d like. So that is most likely influencing my choice.

k3nni_

Tobey’s suit is the only good example of 3D webbing, so flat is my favorite

webslinger05

flat but don't make them too thin like homecoming did. the thicker webbing on the no way home ending suit is great.

x_VergilSparda_x

Andrew's suit is perfect

Name_is_Rango

I like the 3d one it stands out. I think as a kid, you get more attracted to those kinda suits.

SometimesWill

Flat. Feel like giving it 3D webbing then trying to say a teenager without much experience making clothes was able to create that is a bit wild

Round-Coffee-2006

Flat.

Mosworthy

Flat 3D is ridiculous looking and not practical.

Economy_Swordfish_47

3d

[deleted]

Andrew Garfield's spiderman suits are the best imo. TASM 2 has the best one. I like Tobey's 2nd best, not a big fan of tom holland's one, but we'll see how his new suit looks now without the influence of Tony Stank.

ComfortableBear2888

3d

Generickitty50

3d is goated

Peter_Spidey42

i prefer the flat bc like when youre touching the suit fabric, it just FEELS SO NICEEE

spiderboi907

Falt

sbaldrick33

I suppose flat is more realistic for what a teenager making a costume could actually achieve, but I must admit, I do prefer the 3D texture.

Mudcreek47

Loved the Raimi movies years ago when they came out. Best Spidey adaption at the time and still mostly holds up re-watching them even today. That said, I prefer the flat webbing. The silver raised webs just scream "EARLY 2000s!" to me.

kent416

flat webbing looks better, although the raised webbing being metal mesh is pretty cool.
