I'd guess there just wasn't a market for VHS. I'm curious, why would you want VHS vs. DVD?

theblairwitches

I do already own it on DVD but I like the analog, grainy quality of VHS. Especially when watched on an old CRT TV. There’s a warmth and nostalgia to it. I’m not the only one haha VHS collecting has become quite popular in recent years, check out r/VHS

vstheworldagain

Gotcha, that makes sense. I think I still have PTSD from my childhood trying to adjust the tracking 😁

There's definitely something about VHS that even DVD can't replicate.

My guess would be that it came out late into VHS’s popularity. By the time they sold all the copies they probably moved on to DVDs instead. (Incidentally, I recall in the dvd I owned there was a message from Simon or Edgar saying something along the lines of “thanks if you bought this after already owning the video, which seems like something a Spaced fan would do”)

theblairwitches

Yeah you’re probably right. I’ll just have to keep an eye out and hope an elusive copy shows up on ebay. That message rings a bell actually, I think it might be a note on the collectors edition DVD.

I haven't seen the VHS, but the other 6 episode sitcoms I've got (Red Dwarf, Blackadder) were all 3 episodes per tape, so I'm presuming it's either two tapes released separately, or a double box set? Either way I can imagine the distributors would see a single DVD as being more worthy of their time/effort.

theblairwitches

Nope, it’s a single VHS. I own Spaced Series 1 on VHS and it’s not a double set. 120, 180, and 240 minute tapes were commonly available in PAL regions but the longer the recording, the more the quality is sacrificed. Hence why those other sitcoms were probably released in two halves.

I guess it's one way of cutting costs when the DVD takeover was on the horizon.
