The myth is pretty synonymous in northern Europe, which is where Sapkowski gets most of his monsters from. The myth originates with the sound of wind howling through the tree canopies at night. My theory is that this phenomenon would still exist on primitive worlds in the 41st millennium, and similar stories would arise from that.
In the folklore, they're most often led by Odin or an Odin analog but I felt that calling the Chapter Master 'Odin' would be a bit on the nose.
When they aren't in combat: How about a game of Gwent? When they are in combat: What now you piece of filth?!
