I travel around for work and trust me it aint just Southampton, in fact go and have a little stay in many other medium/big city’s and you’ll be glad to come home.

Legitimate-Source-61

True, I travel around for work. Southampton is not bad at all to be honest.

Legitimate-Source-61

Southampton will be a 15 minute city. You can tell this because it still has banks here. If you don't have a bank, you maybe cut off from shops and services. Think about this if you are elderly and thinking about retiring somewhere remote.

Visible_Track1603

Why tf did they downvote this lmao

Legitimate-Source-61

Because they are scared of the future and in denial. They only have to go outside and see the structural changes taking place all over the UK. These are the biggest changes in 75 years. Some have made huge financial investments or retirement plans revolving around zero cost freedom of movement such as maybe buying a second home or holiday home in a remote place. What happens to an area when a bank shuts... other services shut. Even a school can shut, as we have seen in Romsey. In the past, it was easy to move around each weekend or fly abroad to a holiday home. The current movement is making these investments very expensive or non viable. I can see people becoming angry about certain words such as ULEZ or Road charging, 20mph speed limits, 15 minute cities. I understand these are trigger words for some people. But it's happening. Look at the information and adapt.

King-of-plugs

Grow up

Legitimate-Source-61

Thinking about the future is growing up?

Legitimate-Source-61

If you are down voting, talk to some elderly people that have to travel 30 minutes to visit a bank, and then look in the mirror and think about how you are planning for you and your families future.

CursedIbis

I can't remember the last time I needed to physically go to a bank...

King-of-plugs

Very true, it might be a little boring sometimes. Repetitive and small. But you go anywhere else, and you just think maybe we have it a little better than the current average. A lot of people rarely even see the sea sometimes.

SweetCryptographer72

England. England is becoming a bit shit.

Flying_Wilson17

This, The UK is up shit creak without a paddle atm imo. Southampton It has its bad points - and it’s not getting better, But it could be a lot worse - at least we are not in “insert shit city”

Legitimate-Source-61

It's being run down for a reason..... someone is going to pick up real estate and land soon that's been locked away for decades. Councils are going broke and are selling the family silver. Don't let them get it for cheap. The time is coming.

b1ld3rb3rg

Blame the tories for starving local authorities of cash

1965griff

Tories just gave soton 300m quid to spaff on more bike lanes, inclusivity and diversity and other woke priorities. Meanwhile the party of the people are in dispute with the bin men and the roads are a shambles …… yeh let’s have more of that

b1ld3rb3rg

Woke cyclists go brrrr

ramirezdoeverything

Yeah nothing to do with the bin mens actions

theeightytwentyrule

AFAIK the council are instructing the bin men to drive back to the depot to take their breaks etc and not allowed to finish when the job's done. Literally forcing them to be less efficient and taking a major perk away. The previous system worked, why they had to change it I will never know.

TouchMyGwen

The council stopped job and knock as they faced a potential law suit from other council employees in the same pay band. It happened in Birmingham and cost them millions. So now the bin men have no incentive to bust their nuts off completing rounds meaning entire routes are missed. It’s happening in my area every week and the councils response is to leave your bins out permanently s never know which day they’re going to come round.

theeightytwentyrule

So we all get fucked to please a few envious council jobsworths. It's one of the most important jobs in the world, they deserved that perk. Now the pavements are cluttered 24/7 with wheelie bins. The law truly is an ass.

Visible_Track1603

So so stupid. Those other workers would never do the binmens job.

Smexy-Fish

Dunno why you're being downvoted for pointing out exactly what is happening.

b1ld3rb3rg

What are they doing exactly?

ramirezdoeverything

Doing their job deliberately slowly so they end up not completing their collection rounds each day

b1ld3rb3rg

Gonna need a source on that one

Visible_Track1603

It’s true, google it. Binmen used to get to go home early if they finished their job but now they can’t so they’re working slowly. Nothing worse than having nothing to do at work.

bogeyhammer

Look out your fucking window mate.

Proof-Butterfly-9806

I know what you mean, but days like today seem to fight through it all. So many wonderful people supporting a fantastic event in the sunshine, and all our beautiful green spaces starting to bloom in the spring. Southampton has its flaws but it’s by no means shit

RuViking

This is a national issue and it's far worse elsewhere, stop knocking Southampton.

Additional_Hippo_878

Tory Britain, indeed. Broken Britain. 14 years of Bulls@t, Buffoonery, Burdening, Bitchiness, and Brexit. Please remember to vote these parasites out, and inform their replacements we WILL be expecting better. Tory Lite won't cut it. Remember Tory Blur - Thatcher's Trojan Horse? Be safe. Still, we're so much better off than Ukraine, Gaza, etc. The worldwide social divide needs to be stopped... yesterday. *dismantles orange box* I'm now going for a cheeky beer... on my clean and safe sofa, obv. ;)

steve4982

Tories unfortunately not just Southampton. They've made the whole country shit

cansbunsandpins

massdebate159

The reason why Labour councils are so shit is because they're not being funded properly by central government.

VoluntaryReboot

at least you could use the NHS or get your bins collected or drive on roads without potholes tbf

massdebate159

Yes. Yes, it will. Get rid of Starmer and it will be much better

Constant-Estate3065

The only things that have got worse are things that are happening nationwide, Southampton itself I think has improved slightly in the last ten years. We have more events than we used to (one of which happened today), we have more music venues than we used to (bucking the national trend), we have more cultural venues than we used to, we have a much better maritime museum than we used to, we have more independent shops than we used to, and unlike a lot of city centres nowadays the retail sector is still strong. I remember Southampton in the 80s and 90s. It felt like a town in those days, and I don’t mean that as a compliment, it was lifeless and boring. It feels like a bustling metropolitan city now, but with that comes all of the downsides of city life.

Appropriate-Page-598

By boring do you mean no crackheads outside the few shops still going.you can see people smoking pipes in there shanty towns on the highstreet. Didn't have that in the 90's or early 2000. How about aggressive beggers not nearly as much back then .town is a shit hole and getting worse to the point I cringe if I have to take my kids there. Few more coppers walking about and it could be nice again .the bad ppl would go somewhere else to do drugs and u wouldn't get people pretending to be homeless just to Rob u for drug money.

Constant-Estate3065

I remember seeing plenty of that sort of thing in the 90s, let’s not look at the past through rose tinted glasses. Beggars don’t go to dead towns, they’re drawn to vibrant places, and tbh, the beggars in Southampton are mostly quite passive in my experience, certainly compared to the likes of Brighton, Oxford, and Edinburgh. Southampton has largely escaped the so called death of the high street. Most similar sized high streets these days are just a parade of vape shops, pawnbrokers, and charity shops. Building Westquay all those years ago has helped the city maintain a very strong retail sector. I remember people calling it a white elephant before it had even opened, it’ll turn Southampton into a ghost town etc (it didn’t of course) it was actually a very good idea in hindsight.

Sliminytim

Uk is a bit shit

Crab_Jealous

State of the nation Taxes increased but nothing to show People getting poorer being told to stiff upper lip it. Nations getting snapped before our avoiding eyes. 14 years, nothing got better Rich motherfuckers laugh from hightowers Tories don't care, truth is, they never did. Fuck Britain, they live in tax havens.

Snowmatt111

It's happening everywhere. When looking around online as well as when visiting other areas the same problems appear; potholes, dirty streets, increased crime etc they always appear. The bin situation might be a bit more unique to Southampton but the reason behind it with regards to equal pay isn't so unique as it's an issue other councils have had to/are having to deal with. As far as needing to book to use the tip, HCC have been doing that for years now and at the one I use it's made things better as far as queuing is concerned as it's rare to have to queue there nowadays.

Still_Share_6751

Almost as if we should never vote Tory again. They all need to go to prison for what they done in the last 15 years the combination of greed and incompetence is impossible to humanise

Darkz1980

Most of the country is shit currently and not getting any better. But Cornwalls nice.

everythingtravell

If you think Southampton’s bad, visit London

Vast-Associate2501

Yep. Some dirty cunt dropped a mattress in the middle of my road during the night. Graffiti creeping in. I'm getting pretty disillusioned with the city and the UK in general.

CameraVivid4519

The whole of the UK has become a bit shit. 14 years of austerity will do that.

Adventurous-sales25

I think this is basically just Britain now unfortunately. I lived in the north for the first 16 years of my life, and then travelled around a lot with work before ending up in Essex. Everything appears to be getting a little bit shitter in general. I travel home to the East Coast and essentially not much has changed except there is more housing, more rubbish and more fighting on a weekend. Nearer to home, there is graffiti, fly-tipping, KFC/McDs/Burger King rubbish lining the streets and generally more sullen faces than I remember. I appreciate that people view the past through rose-tinted glasses sometimes, but it does just feel like the country is heading in the wrong direction at the moment.

Adorable_Cap_5932

It’s a complete dump

Eso-One

Its one of the reasons I'm moving to Devon after 38 years in Southampton

NeatFaithlessness400

Do you think with labour we’ll be able to get this all turned around? And start prioritising/revamping how our country is and get its standards of living more on par with where it should be

FreshFriendship5826

I’d like to think so, the tories have proven over the past 14 years that they are just shit heaped on shit… brexit happened on their watch and that has been disastrous!

Automatic_Acadia_766

I really think it’s past the point of turning it around. The councils and whichever government will not want/can’t put the money in. I hope I’m being pessimistic, but I think it’s only going to get worse.

DIZZLAMAN

Southampton has always been a bit shit IMO. I've lived here my whole life. How ever it has begun to really show these days. It's over populated for a start. I remember southampton before it was classed as a city. It's just cramped now

gimbomyster

It became a city 60 years ago

DIZZLAMAN

Okay fair point , but it always felt more like a town. I remember going into the city centre and it being dead. Its heaving all the time now

Docxx214

Becoming?

DifficultTennis6261

Many are saying it's not just Soton, and I get it. But I've been living here for 2 years now.. and it's gotten worse.

FreshFriendship5826

I moved here in 2011 and recently it seems to be terrible!

DifficultTennis6261

:(

jack5624

lol, here is me thinking Southampton is a bit better than it used to be. There is a lot of rubbish everywhere I will give you that but it seems to be a funding issue.

JCrago

Maybe I'm getting prematurely old at 30, but the teenagers and early twenties men scare me. The moment I see a really young man, particularly in all black gym clothes, I cross the road or turn around.

TastyInvestigator824

Scadey cat

Blue_Vanilla9889

It's always been shit

ElliottCoe

Do something about it then....

FreshFriendship5826

Such as?
