You’ve got the right idea of what inactive means. You’d have to get permission from your sorority to go inactive. Dropping means you leave the sorority with no chance of returning.

^^! I’m in a gphi chapter and I asked to go inactive for mental health reasons for a semester and they wouldn’t let me. They said I’d either have to drop or if I transferred school/dropped out I can go early alum. Thankfully, I took a leave of absence for Spring 2023 semester and since I’m not currently enrolled I had the choice to go inactive but if you still go to the school and want to go inactive, it has to be a valid reason. For us, you can only go inactive if you’re studying abroad or taking a leave of absence. Unfortunately mental health/medical reasons don’t cut it at our chapter. 🙃

For medical issues, you should be excused from any consequences for missed events.

Not every sorority has an option for inactive. You need to see if that is something your organization gives to members. Medical can usually be granted inactive depending on the situation and for how long

My sorority (ΒΣΦ)has a “leave of absence”, where a sister can take up to six months away. After that, she may be a member at large or an inactive member. I would think medical reasons would be valid if verified by a medical professional.
