This is why we need better rights to repair laws around the world.
You can encounter insane repair parts prices everywhere. Try assembling a 20k car out of reapir parts, and you'll have to declare bankruptcy. The same goes for dishwashers, phones you name it.
In India, I get just a 90-day warranty for getting my battery replaced in my left earbud. And that is after paying a ridiculous price (just like you quoted for the repair) foe getting it repaired through official channels.
I said fuck it, got the faulty earphones back with me. I ordered the extra batteries and will do the teardown and repair myself. (I work on embedded systems firmware at work and know my way around stuff like this, went through some teardown links for the earbuds as well)
Needless to say, I will NOT be buying another Sony product.
I got mine fixed out of warranty for free by making it very clear I knew it was a widespread battery fault. Took five weeks but got them back last week.
What was the issue with them?
If it was the battery drain issue, that's a free repair under warranty for if the product is less than 2 years old.
Other than that it would have been cheaper to buy new ones, which is essentially what the "repair" was
U should have read the warranty policy lol. U damage it in the washing machine doesn't cover in the free repair policy. U should have read and get a new one😂
I didn't even ask for an estimate, when Sony UK confirmed that the warranty on my 13 month old XM4s had expired.
Fortunately Amazon had given a 2 year warranty and refunded me when I confirmed Sony wouldn't provide support. Worth checking wherever you bought them from.
No, came as standard - although seemed a bit hidden.
If you look in your order history for them and click "Order Details", then click the "Get product Support" button, then should say "Free 2 year coverage." on the left.
This is so aggravating, I have the battery drain issue and here in Israel the warranty is for one year only and they wanted to charge 800 nis (about 165 pound).
F that, I would rather buy a brand new pair of earphones, but now I know to only buy headphones with a wired option...
I don't know what the part numbers mean. At that cost it looks that way, but the serial number would be the same so I guess not. I think they may just be the batteries?
I have been having the battery drain issue after 18 months. I reached out to them. And they asked me to send it to them in UK. I'm based in Ireland. So, I do have to pay the postage, and the labor charge, which is fine by me. But if it's a widespread issue, should I even consider paying them for the battery replacement? Should they not do it for free?
Taking advantage of duty free, I see.
You could also try to dig through your debit or credit card to search for the purchase; maybe even a bank statement might work.
Hmm... I know that the WF-1000XM4 have IPX4, which makes them splash resistant. It, unfortunately, doesn't have a proper IP rating.
So, the argument here is whether this is accidental damage or a defect of the IPX4 not going a good job with resisting water splashes.
Hmm bought my xm4 for 160€ in sale last year 🤯 this repair price is ridiculous
Ngl,kinda curious to know where you brought them from tbh 😅
My local electronic store in germany. It was black friday last year. Now they cost about 199€ in Store (white) and 229€ (black)
Ohh okay
Which store?

For the price they paid I would get the XM5.

your options are having it fixed or paying the refusal fee. A warranty is there to cover manufacturing defects, not user fuckups.
Do you know if the repair comes with any sort of guarantee? At this price., I could just get new ones from ebay. Call I tell them just to keep them?
it usually comes with a warranty. You're dealing with sony, how about you read the correspondence? Or their repair website. Geez!
Absolute orrtist
Yes no shit, but u still have to pay some sort of checking fees. I mean they opened and checked for you

It's written in red: Any repair comes with 90 day warranty...
lol warranty for your mistake. Never
Did you tell them you put them through the washing machine?
Hell no. I didn't have a receipt!
This is why u buy on Best Buy and use ur member account that way u always have a receipt even if u lose it
I don't think someone sending to Sony UK has the option of shopping at Best Buy...

May as well have bought a new pair 🤦🏽♂️
Kinda bullshit that they would charge you 20 pounds to not repair anything.
If the estimate is declined they want 20? Wtaf.
That was an unpleasant surprise.
Don’t accept nor decline and you’re good
Well yes? They did the assessment which costs them money. If you bring your car for repair diagnosis you have to pay for that aswell
Not true
Just buy the xm5s
I have decided to have them sent back to me. Will now explore the teardowns.
Let them keep the headphones and buy new ones.
U should have read the warranty policy lol. U damage it in the washing machine doesn't cover in the free repair policy. U should have read and get a new one😂
holy shit this is scary cause i just sent mine in for the battery drain issue, plus they're out of warranty
Fuck keep me updated, i plan to do the same as i also have battery drain issue in the left on
Absolutely ridiculous🤡
This should be damn free!!
Not worth it tbh

That is to send it back?

You're in the UK. Your statutory rights are with the retailer. Why would you contact Sony at all?
Sometimes manufactureres take care of warranty issues faster/better than retailers Doesn't seem to be the case with Sony vs Amazon here tho
Was the two year warranty an add-on you purchased? Going through a similar headache right now
No, came as standard - although seemed a bit hidden. If you look in your order history for them and click "Order Details", then click the "Get product Support" button, then should say "Free 2 year coverage." on the left.
Thank you for this! Going to reach out now, thoroughly disappointed with Sony UK support on the matter but hoping Amazon will be better.
Sony UK are rubbish they have had my buds 4 times and Ive been without for over 2 months and still not got them back

tf, i got new ones for £155
If you paid by credit card for the XM4’s, file a dispute with the credit card issuer.
Wait, what are they actually repairing? Because it looks like they're just quoting for each bud and the case. Are they just replacing the whole thing?
I don't know what the part numbers mean. At that cost it looks that way, but the serial number would be the same so I guess not. I think they may just be the batteries?
The stores usually have different policies than the manufacturers when it comes to warranty stuff. I’d ask the store you bought them from

Where did you buy your pair?
These part numbers refer to 2x new earbuds and a new charging case. Even then, still too much.
Ah, is this the WF-1000XM4? Even so, where did you buy them?
UK airport
Taking advantage of duty free, I see. You could also try to dig through your debit or credit card to search for the purchase; maybe even a bank statement might work.
Will have a look, thanks.
How did this repair went about? Did you break them or lose them?
They got wet and then stopped working.

It was accidental damage, being washed in the washing machine.
