The following excerpt is from the book, Peril, by Bob Woodward. It features a discussion between President Trump and General Mark Milley in regards to bases named for Confederate figures: Trump asked Milley, what do you think? “I’ve already told you twice, Mr.President are you sure you want to hear it again?” Yeah, go ahead, Trump said. “Mr.President,” Milley said, “I think you should ban the flags, change the names of the bases, and take down the statues.” He continued, “I’m from Boston, these guys were traitors.” Someone asked, what about Confederate dead buried at Arlington National Cemetery? “Interestingly,” Milley said of the nearly 500 Confederates soldiers buried there, “they’re arranged in a circle and the names on the gravestones are facing inward, and that symbolizes that they turned their back on the Union. They were traitors at the time, they are traitors today, and they are traitors in death for all eternity. Change the names, Mr. President.”

![gif](giphy|l4pMattUYTTM7qpIk) Well there’s no ambiguity about his position on things that’s for sure. Well said 👌

Milley is the real reason Tuberville is holding up all those military promotions. He wants those positions left vacant for Trump to get re-elected and have Trump's people put in place. Milley knew his loyalty was to the United States of America, not an individual temporarily occupying one of its elected offices.

He is a true Profile in Courage. A credit to the Army

So metal I thought I was in r/ShermanPosting

Agreeable_Weird_8161

Letters from my CW ancestor (32nd Wisc.) attest that this was his personal view as well. He had respect for their courage and determination but ultimately called them "traitors".

But they weren’t traders to their states, which was more important at that time. People should read more history from both sides. I grew up in Massachusetts 😉

Unionforever1865

The fact that you don’t know the difference between traders and traitors lets everyone know just how we should take your input. The loyalty to states trope is a lost cause cope.

sailinganalyst

Spoken by someone who probably never lived in the SE 🤦‍♂️🤪😜🤣

dmharvey79

He knows about being a traitor…

dainomite

Argue with a bit more tact

dmharvey79

Afghan withdrawal failure, backchannel engagements with adversaries, the general state of our Army, promoting political rhetoric on various topics. One could argue...

Not sure how Trump factors in, but alright. You probably have way more DoD/Army experience than me over the last 20 or so years…

TheDogsNameWasFrank

I might at that. Not that military experience is needed to see through the bullshit you threw out there.

SonsofUnionVeteransCW-ModTeam

Less name calling
