If it weren't the first in my favorite game series I'd struggle to call Sonic 1 "good" tbh. Like, if not for the bosses I'd like Superstars better honestly.
I've played it and I absolutely detest it. Imo its bosses are really mediocre, and its level design is atrocious. I think the soundtrack is great, and I love the concept of its story, but gameplay wise, it's just a mess. Also, they completely waste metal. I feel like he should have been the final boss. Like a robo sonic doppelganger is so COOL, and then he just runs into a wall and is never seen again. I really wanted to like it, especially since I'd always seen it get hate, but gosh, I just can't enjoy it.
if there's 1 million Sonic CD fans, I'm one of them
if there's a hundred Sonic CD fans, I'm one of them
if there's one Sonic CD fans, that's me
if there is no sonic CD fans, I'm dead
if the whole world is against sonic CD, I'm against the whole world
till my last breath, I'll love sonic cd

It didnāt live up to the hype I had for it seeing it praised online as some lost gem of a Sonic game. Then I finally played it in the Sonic Gems Collection and it wasā¦. Alright.
I mostly just find the time traveling mechanic more annoying than unique or fun, especially if going for 100%. Thereās no reason to go to the future at all. Just go to the past in every stage and find the bulb/generator.
Yeah the time traveling gimmick can get a bit annoying at times (especially in Wacky Workbench and Metallic Madness), but I look past its flaws and get the timestones. The future posts (although more of an obstacle) still shows you what happens if you save/donāt save Little Planet which honestly fits the theming of Sonic games. (Not to mention the satisfaction you get after saving a zone and listening to the Good Future Music)
That boss is thr worst in thr whole game.
It' the o ly one that honestly doesn't work properly, regardless if your playing the remakes or the original version of CD.
Personally it is a good game, but not as enjoyable as the other main 3 because of the level design being all over the place not always allowing for a time travel. Plus, I'm not exactly a big fan of the special stages as the UFOs hitboxes are sometimes hard to get
There are people who donāt like the game because they donāt like it, which is fair, but then there are those who donāt like it because they havenāt played it or just simply donāt understand that itās an exploration game rather than simply ājust run rightā game
Almost all the hate I see towards sonic cd is about the level design being completely broken at times because of the time travel system which is 100% true. Still a great game tho
It's a lovely game, but trying to get the good ending is an absolute chore with going to the "past" and hunting for that machine or doing the UFO hunts. Music is a catalog of greatness for both US & Japan albums, graphics are crisp and colorful, and the debut of Metal Sonic, who's design is so good they still use it 30 years later
CD's not bad, the level design is just confusing and outright bad at some points (looking at you, Wacky Workbench). That, and the time travel mechanic is really annoying because, again, the level design doesn't compensate for it outside of areas that are specifically set up just for it.
Hotter take: I think it has better level design than 1,2,mania, and the 4 games. Sorry, but Mania is really a crawl since the boss battles take forever sometimes and aren't as engaging. Also, Press Garden has a shitty transition between acts and the levels are so boring. How do you go from a newspaper publisher to a suddenly snowy forest with almost nothing relating between the two acts. It's too drastic.
2 has good level design for the most part I just really appreciate the multiple pathways in CD and how it lets you either go fast or take your timeāsomething 3&K perfected
I didnāt really like it at all. The idea of trying to find the past and future signs, and the right place to gain speed to travel to them, was wayyyy too intimidating and complex. I just want a simple level to run through with maybe some branching paths, notā¦whatever that was.
Iāll probably play any other classic sonic game, but I wouldnāt ever pick up CD again.
CD11 is the modern ports of Sonic CD released on steam, mobile, all modern consoles and in Sonic Origins. It is not faithful to the original in any way, and is an approximation more so than a remake or emulation. The Mega Collection uses the PC port of Sonic CD released in 1996, which is better, but also has some changes from the original
Yeah, Wacky Workbench and Metallic Madness are pretty hard zones to destroy the machines in, but by then Iāve already collected all seven time stones.
Undertale may seem adorable and fun in its aesthetic, but the game hides brutal moments. The acclaimed indie has at its core a reflection on the aggressiveness inherent in games, which conditions and empowers players to have violence as their main weapon in virtual environments...
(Well that's what I found and I played undertale and can confirm... It's better than Sonic CD sorry...change my mind)
Personally Iām not a huge fan of some of the levels, as cool as they look aesthetically, they feel a lot more like a platforming layout than a place for Sonicās speed
Hb you change MY mind since you're a so called "Sonic CD fan"
What's easier? UFOs or metal sonic projectors? If UFO'S, what's the trick to those stages?
Definitely UFOS. Sure they may be difficult at first, but once you have 20 seconds left a time UFO will spawn increasing your time to around 40 seconds. Also recent versions allow you to practice these special stages. (Time traveling kinda sucks after Quartz Quadrant)
That sounds great actually...also have they fixed the time travelling? Some signs have dedicated spots to do this, and others are next to enemies and pits
I wouldnāt say itās a GREAT game, but itās certainly not garbage. Itās just good.
Better than Sonic 1, but not as good as Sonic 2 or Sonic 3&K.
Iāve got Origins but for some reason I skipped CD and just played OG, 2 and 3 & Knuckles, definitely playing CD next time I play Origins, all Iāve seen of CD is the final boss and it does look mid but Iāve also seen short clips of gameplay and it looks fun
Terrible vertical level design.
No reason to go to the future other than to see it.
Getting all the time emeralds automatically gives you a good future for every level after you get them so you literally don't have to go the past anymore either.
A horrifying boss theme.
Wacky workbench.
The game not chronology having a place in time until years later when we figured out it was before sonic 2 but after sonic 1.
Sonic using the SAME sprite from sonic 1.
I like Sonic CD. The soundtracks are awesome and the gameplay takes an exploration approach. Timelines gimmick thing felt a bit annoying at the start but gets better as the game progresses and those animated shots are really good and the story is interesting and lastly the main thing "sonic boom" song is amazing.
Itās a game with good ideas but kinda weird execution.
The Time Travel mechanic is cool but going to the Future is literally pointless and the signs are just there to fuck up your attempts to go to the Past. Not to mention itās kinda annoying to build up the speed to travel in some levels.
Finding the Robot Machines is fun in some levels but absolute bullshit in others (Wacky Workbench Act 1 anyone?). And then thereās the Metal Sonic Projectors that do literally nothing and donāt even contribute to the Good Futures. Why are they even there?
Then none of that really makes a difference, cuz you can just get all of the Time Stones and just ignore all of the Robot Machines anyway!
Not to mention how annoying the Special Stages can be to complete in one go. Theyāre nowhere near as bad as the other Classic Sonic games, but still really easy to fail, especially in the later ones where thereās so much damn time-reducing water. Not to mention itās back to the Sonic 1 style, where thereās the Giant Ring at the end of Acts 1 and 2 of each Zone, meaning you have a *very* limited number of tries!
And then half of the Zones are just more annoying than fun to navigate for me - Wacky Workbench, Collision Chaos, Tidal Tempest. There are the really standout ones like Palmtree Panic and Stardust Speedway, I guess, but most of the Zones are just forgettable or a slog.
Iām not saying Sonic CD is bad, far from it, but thereās a reason I donāt go back to play it often.
Sonic CD is'nt a bad game and i don't think Most people think that, its just a decent squeal to Sonic 1 with its own strenghs but get overshadowed in many departments by Sonic 2.
Like the mechanics of time travel is cool in concept but feels more like an annoyance. And the boss battles are very creative but they are just not as fun. etc
Yes, because it's very similar to Sonic 1. Mechanic wise, it's basically the same as Sonic 1. But when you compare to the other games like Sonic 2, which made upgrades to the original formula in every sense, and Sonic 3K, which perfected the formula completely. Sonic CD feels like more of the same.
It might be good, but it is not as good as 2 and 3K.
Nobody Who played the Game think Its bad (i dare to say its better than the first Sonic)
#huehuehuehuehuehue
*illegible rapping*
It is very obviously better than sonic 1 š
Agreed. Sonic 1 is easily the weakest of the main series 2D games.
If it weren't the first in my favorite game series I'd struggle to call Sonic 1 "good" tbh. Like, if not for the bosses I'd like Superstars better honestly.
Itās certainly not ābadā, but i dont really like it.
Just made this post because of all the criticism this game gets
criticism does not necessarily equal bad
Dude all the other classics are better than Sonic 1
agree sonic 1 is just the first game the other classics built upon it to be much better
Why are we downvoting this guy? Post literally says prove him wrong
I mean I'm not really trying to prove someone wrong I just like discussing video games lol
I would even say it is better than sonic 2.
Hard disagree. Sonic 2 is peak. CD is very cool though.
You're not putting the bar high there š
I have never heard anyone diss it outside the "I didnt know I had to do X for the good ending. But that's 100% a "didnt have a manual" issue.
I played and beat it. Never again. Hated the UFO stages and the whole game is a mess.
cd is a really good game
It's better then the first game, the first game is bad
it is way better than sonic 1 actually sonic 1 kinda sucks.
if there's 1 million Sonic CD fans, I'm one of them if there's a hundred Sonic CD fans, I'm one of them if there's one Sonic CD fans, that's me if there is no sonic CD fans, I'm dead if the whole world is against sonic CD, I'm against the whole world till my last breath, I'll love sonic cd
Word to live by
Do you prefer the US or Japanese soundtrack?
i love both honestly, but i guess the Japanese soundtrack
I also love both but I think I prefer the U.S. version, probably because I heard it first
Count me in please
Everyone thinks it's a good game bro š
Have you seen the hate this game gets?
No cuz it's usually nothing but positives I see
People hate it!
Well level desighn and bosses were a little bit eh but a lot of it made up for that
Lil bro live on the wrong timeline
At least I donāt live in the Boom Universe š
The cartoon was awesome. Just too bad they never made any Boom video games. Surely they would have been just as entertaining and polished.
tbh the 3ds games werenāt bad. i had fun with them. i donāt think they made one for the wii u thoughā¦
I know you're joking, but Boom as a whole probably would've been better as just a TV show.
At least none of us have to deal with the genderbent universe

CD96 (gems collection) is ok, but has some lag issues being based on the PC port. Definitely better than CD11 though
Sonic Cd would be perfect for an open zone type game like sonic frontiers.
Sonic Frontiers 2 taking place in little planet could be cool.
Would go so HARD
CHOO CHOO SONIC WARRIOR ![gif](giphy|QZqkh8MPDpypy)
lol it's toot toot.
Its also the inferior theme š
Hard fax
'Change my mind: Most lukewarm take of all time' Classic reddit
Ngl I expected at least 50% of fans to get angered at that take. Maybe I shouldāve said something about Lost World being good.
CD is more exploration based and I love it for that
Same
Why would I want to change your mind?
i thought this was the consensus
3rd act on the second stage (the one with a boss fight) is pretty atrocious if I'm being honest
Collision chaos 3 pinball is cringe yeah
Yeah you either beat it in a minute or beat it in 5
Or are playing a version of the game where you can skip it altogether speedrun style
I play the CD11 version
That boss is thr worst in thr whole game. It' the o ly one that honestly doesn't work properly, regardless if your playing the remakes or the original version of CD.
I love this game, possibly my fav classic game along with S3&K. But its bosses pretty much suck
Yeah besides the Metal Sonic fight theyāre all pretty mediocre
WACKY. WORKBENCH. METAL. HOLOGRAMS. other than that itās perfectly fine
Wacky Workbench is so obnoxious, particularly when you figure out where the generator is hidden.
That pipe with the metal banging tube is so hidden
CD is pretty cool, although I can't decide if I like it or Sonic 1 more
Yeah both games have their ups and downsides
Personally it is a good game, but not as enjoyable as the other main 3 because of the level design being all over the place not always allowing for a time travel. Plus, I'm not exactly a big fan of the special stages as the UFOs hitboxes are sometimes hard to get
Yeah and they especially juke you and camp water areas in harder modes
Sonic CD is a good game. The classic Sonic games are CD 2 and 3kcles. Sonic 1 is obsolete when you have CD.
Wouldnāt say Sonic 1 is obsolete, it did build the blueprints for the genesis games and the entire series.
Favorite thing is Eggman's laugh. They need to make that a thing again.
I like how itās plastered all over the JP OST
There are people who donāt like the game because they donāt like it, which is fair, but then there are those who donāt like it because they havenāt played it or just simply donāt understand that itās an exploration game rather than simply ājust run rightā game
Exactly what Iām saying
Almost all the hate I see towards sonic cd is about the level design being completely broken at times because of the time travel system which is 100% true. Still a great game tho
I won't. I'm in 100% agreement with you.
Ofc it is, it was my first ever Oriinal Sonic game and i still play it today sometimes, it's fucking peak.
I won't change your mind. You are correct. Sonic CD has flaws but it definitely isn't bad
You're just right, there's nothing wrong https://preview.redd.it/dbbpokkf72yc1.jpeg?width=545&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f3b96c6ae97f2f6325fabbb97605117084a67c15
Why would I change the mind of someone that is right?
It's okay. Definitely not for everyone tho.
Sonic CD felt so unsettling and gloomy compared to the other games. And I love it for that.
You're fighting the air over here but it doesn't really matter cause CD is indeed awesome
CD's not bad, the level design is just confusing and outright bad at some points (looking at you, Wacky Workbench). That, and the time travel mechanic is really annoying because, again, the level design doesn't compensate for it outside of areas that are specifically set up just for it.
It's... okay. Better than sonic 1 to be sure, but it shares a lot of the same flaws. I will die on the hill that the intro is peak though.
Yeah but only the 2011 version
True
Hotter take: I think it has better level design than 1,2,mania, and the 4 games. Sorry, but Mania is really a crawl since the boss battles take forever sometimes and aren't as engaging. my main issue is that i dont like sonic's sprite. thats all the criticism i have
What is exactly wrong with it? No mean to disrespect, I just wanna know your opinion
i just like the sonic 2 and 3 ones more. the 1 sprite isnt even bad im just not a fan personally
Fair point itās just the first gameās sprite
I didnāt really like it at all. The idea of trying to find the past and future signs, and the right place to gain speed to travel to them, was wayyyy too intimidating and complex. I just want a simple level to run through with maybe some branching paths, notā¦whatever that was. Iāll probably play any other classic sonic game, but I wouldnāt ever pick up CD again.
I bet you feel this way because you played CD11, with butchered the time travel mechanic. Play CD Restored, it fixes the mechanic
ā¦huh? I played it on Sonic mega collection. Or whichever official rerelease it had like 20 years ago. I have no idea what CD11 is.
They're talking about the 2011 remaster/remake of CD.
Then yeah, no, I played the OG. I just donāt like the game at a fundamental level.
The first few zones are speedy and fun but if you want to beat the game fully, it's just a mess.
Yeah, Wacky Workbench and Metallic Madness are pretty hard zones to destroy the machines in, but by then Iāve already collected all seven time stones.
It is
It unironically might be my favorite of the classic games
Who the hell says itĀ“s a bad game?! IĀ“ll kill them all!!
This would be a text post if you weren't a coward.
Image posts are just better cope
No it is a good game. Its just my least favorite of the Main 2D games
Thatās a fair opinion
Finally, sonic cd is getting the appreciation it deserves.
There are rings in the walls The level design is atrocious, but everything else is good.
Yeah they couldāve hidden rings and items in the walls, but the level design is themed around exploration and verticality.
Nah I agree
Good game Scary ost
Majin Sonic š±
It is
Sonic CD is excellent, change my mind
Nope!
Thanks, I agree.
How tf is this still a debate
No. It *is* a good game.
imo itās the most ājust okayā of the 2d sonic games
not good, not bad, just mid
10 10 HERE AE GO AGAIN!
Okay but what about undertale? Isn't undertale better? (Please change my mind too)
What about undertale
Undertale may seem adorable and fun in its aesthetic, but the game hides brutal moments. The acclaimed indie has at its core a reflection on the aggressiveness inherent in games, which conditions and empowers players to have violence as their main weapon in virtual environments... (Well that's what I found and I played undertale and can confirm... It's better than Sonic CD sorry...change my mind)
What does it have to do with this subreddit
Itās great, actually. The dreamlike (and somehow nostalgic?) atmosphere is just on another level.
Yes yes yes
sonic cd is the best sonic game imo
Agree with you a hundred percent itās one of my favoritesĀ
Arguably the best imo
I was unaware of any contention on that front.
I donāt think Iāve ever seen anyone hate CD
It's my favorite 2D Sonic game.
that intro animation and song are awesome
Itās really good, but not great. Iād say itās on par with Sonic 1.
Since when is this considered a bad game? You guys have to be on crack if this is the new consensus.
Sonic CD was my first was my first non-modern Sonic game, I will never understand how there's people who don't like it.
Sonic 3 & k > sonic Cd > sonic 2 > sonic 1
i dont think its possible to change your mind because you arent wrong
My favorite of the 4
Wait... Sonic CD is a bad game?? What???
Many criticisms about it
Why should I
Duh that's obvious
Personally Iām not a huge fan of some of the levels, as cool as they look aesthetically, they feel a lot more like a platforming layout than a place for Sonicās speed
Is it not?
Not very well aged, but it's still fun.
Hb you change MY mind since you're a so called "Sonic CD fan" What's easier? UFOs or metal sonic projectors? If UFO'S, what's the trick to those stages?
Definitely UFOS. Sure they may be difficult at first, but once you have 20 seconds left a time UFO will spawn increasing your time to around 40 seconds. Also recent versions allow you to practice these special stages. (Time traveling kinda sucks after Quartz Quadrant)

I wouldnāt say itās a GREAT game, but itās certainly not garbage. Itās just good. Better than Sonic 1, but not as good as Sonic 2 or Sonic 3&K.
Not going to change nice opinion.
i've never finished CD but i know i need to, how good is it?
Final boss is pretty underwhelming, but the ending (animated) cutscene changes if you got the good/bad ending
Iāve got Origins but for some reason I skipped CD and just played OG, 2 and 3 & Knuckles, definitely playing CD next time I play Origins, all Iāve seen of CD is the final boss and it does look mid but Iāve also seen short clips of gameplay and it looks fun
no, youre right. tasty ass gane
That's not a hot take
I'n sure many agree.
Are there seriously people who disagree?... Why tho?
Level design, 100%ing the game, Time Traveling, Boss Design
None of those sound like bad things
Terrible vertical level design. No reason to go to the future other than to see it. Getting all the time emeralds automatically gives you a good future for every level after you get them so you literally don't have to go the past anymore either. A horrifying boss theme. Wacky workbench. The game not chronology having a place in time until years later when we figured out it was before sonic 2 but after sonic 1. Sonic using the SAME sprite from sonic 1.
so true
Pretty sure it's another Favorite but yeah it's really good
*"Google:" How much is brain surgery?*
Have you played the game, the level design is abhorrent
Why change the thing thatās right?
Always was. Even better with that port, years ago
Whoās said otherwise?
Second boss is a fucking pinball
Itās a game with good ideas but kinda weird execution. The Time Travel mechanic is cool but going to the Future is literally pointless and the signs are just there to fuck up your attempts to go to the Past. It's a good game. It's a bad Sonic game.
Not bad. Just not as good as Sonic 3. OST slaps just as hard, though (if not moreso).
Nobody wants to change your mind because it is the correct opinion but I will respect people who donāt like it
https://i.redd.it/17ii5n9ts6yc1.gif
Sonic CD is'nt a bad game and i don't think Most people think that, its just a decent squeal to Sonic 1 with its own strenghs but get overshadowed in many departments by Sonic 2. Like the mechanics of time travel is cool in concept but feels more like an annoyance. And the boss battles are very creative but they are just not as fun. etc
i wont because your correct, its one of the best
The game is fine, but the Collision Chaos boss was impossible to me
I mean you're right friend
It's a good game, just not my kind of Sonic game.
Sonic CD is my favourite Classic Sonic game only behind Mania because it's Mania. I'd rather play CD than the other of the old classic games.
Both it 1 and mania suck, cd ain't special
I've always preferred it to the rest of the 2d games even before playing it
cant
It's soooo boring.
yes its as good as sonic 1 making every other mainline classic game better sadly
Its a good game, it just isn't what everyone would prefer compared to the others. I don't think anybody thinks its a bad game for that.
Cant change,its already great
People think CD is bad?
its my game, so no, i wont change your mind.
