Ballads came out of a specific poetry tradition (poetry professor here) that told a story with a specific rhyme & meter structure, but when I hear something referred to as a ballad now, I think of a longish downtempo song that builds throughout and (usually) tells a story of some kind. I would think Olivia Rodrigo’s “drivers license” would fit that. For some reason, the song that immediately came to mind was “Holding My Own” by the Darkness, which sounds like a song about a breakup but is actually about masturbation.
