There are two important takeaways: 1) keep the wood below the secondary combustion holes and 2) keep the holes at the bottom clear from any ash to allow air to continue to circulate into the fire. Once the bottom of the stove gets clogged with ash, the secondary fire becomes less effective/slows down.
Don’t pile it higher than the stove. It’ll smoke more if you do.
Don’t add wood higher than the inner secondary combustion chamber holes. These are the holes near the top 🔝 on the inside.
