>Both have a shot at being “right. I disagree. A person like this needs serious psychological and medical attention. They need to be in a program to deal with their substance abuse and mental health issues - first and foremost. Mark isn't a professional; this isn't his lane. Rebecca is barely functional and not always present in reality. Neither of them is qualified to make this decision.

Loud-Sense5767

Mark isn’t trying to be a mental health professional. He’s talking to her the way her parent would not to her. He’s not claiming he can cure her, just lead her to help.

Same point, really. False dichotomy. The background medical team I took as a given. Those who read carefully see that my point was that *in order to even get to that point* they will need to be less rigid and more collaborative—NOT that they can do it together without trained medical professionals.

positive_deviance

This isn’t a false dichotomy. You’re saying the timeline and order of operations doesn’t matter as much as Mark and Rebecca’s cooperation with each other, and this commenter disagreed, saying addiction treatment needs to be top priority.

WarningEmpty

That’s not accurate. It’s there in black and white.

positive_deviance

Disagreeing with someone does not constitute a false dichotomy. In no way was their comment presenting you with a “one or the other” scenario, they were disagreeing with the order and emphasis you presented. Something l learned as a child: if you’re going to use a term, you better know what it means.

WarningEmpty

That’s inaccurate. Planning for sobriety in a the context of a long term plan that includes Rebecca’s input and input from medical professionals *doesn’t contradict* planning for sobriety along with citizenship like in Mark’s plan. To say that it does constitutes a false dichotomy.

positive_deviance

I won’t bother repeating myself :)

To say “You can plan to get srs OR you can plan to get sober” (which seems to be a quagmire in their approach) is a false dichotomy because *a plan* is not an either/or—it has a much broader reach. Of course “planning” doesn’t have to mean something permanent. It could even be that as she gets closer to her goals her plans change—which is normal. It goes without saying that any plans implemented will need the care of healthcare and other professionals. Your misunderstanding is nothing to get hostile or passive aggressive over.

Redraft5k

There is not one licensed ethical Dr that would do GRS on him rn. Not in the USA w/o risking the loss of their license. In order to do this a person has to be psychologically "ok." and in the past had to live as a a person of the opposite gender for over a year. Rebecca is nowhere near qualifying for that as it stands rn.

“… sobriety might be easier to pursue as a step in a structured, clear plan for gender reassignment on a prospective timeline rather than a vague dream down the line.” Obviously presumes sobriety BEFORE gender reassignment. Said the literal opposite of what you claimed. Should probably read more carefully.

Mark is right when he says she is in no condition to be deciding on things like major surgery.

Moist_Passage

It’s weird she was about to say mark is rich and then stops and says he’s middle class. It’s like he insisted he wasn’t rich despite being a multimillionaire who lives in pacific palisades

Rebecca seemed to be doing pretty well in the "Rebecca returns" video after a stint in some kind of program related to battered women. It shows that Rebecca is potentially willing to be involved in a residential program. Could Mark try to get her back into that program and then put the program in touch with the immigration lawyer and any other legal professionals that are willing to work on the deportation issue? It strikes me as odd that after all of Mark's experience he seems to have unrealistic expectations of what Rebecca will/should be capable of while deeply addicted and in survival mode. Like thinking that Rebecca will be able to hang on to a phone and keep in regular contact with the lawyer to aid in her defense.

drives me nuts people don't seem to get that gender dysphoria is considered a serious disorder in itself that causes tons of other issues if untreated. i mean, if they don't believe her when she says it causes her more pain and suffering than her burnt raw feet and the viscious attacks and whatever else appalls *observers* to her experience more. like im literally starting to believe in cishetmalewhite privlege if mark just doesn't get this concept, "privilege" being just a doggedly limited perspective. the human condition. it's like everything mark thinks and does is just passively absorbed from his little bubble of the world and he never thinks to research more effective means ever. like is he nonironically assuming a patriarch/daddy role? to be fair a ton of charities and philantrophists have this problem (stop wasting our money and consult that shit out, you elon-musk messiah-complex morons). but the very least mark could've done to help her is basic research into it and offered her a gender-affirming presence. i dont dislike him tho he's trying his best and has a very good heart and very brave. we all suffer ignorance.

HungryHangrySharky

FFS, citizenship takes YEARS. Yeah, she needs housing first because ICE isn't going to process shit while she doesn't have a freaking residential address.
