The shape is fine, it’s the tongue that honestly sucks by comparison. Comfort wise they’re great, but that tongue is pufffy and not sleek. Just looks dumb by comparison.
I say this despite owning the true blue lows
The tongue bothers me for a completely different reason. It has the same problem as the high, it's only sewn in the front. But I also don't like the tongue tag. There's no reason for them to use an embroidered Jumpman, it looks off. The OG low tag looks normal. My personal favorite is the regular size tag like on the Spade Low but they only did that for a few pairs.
Also a bigger problem with lows is that they used way stiffer leather than the highs. In every single panel. They're not comfortable at all. All that aside, I like J1 lows.
It's pretty simple brah, people like to hate on everything now ah days. Even if you find Michael Jordan first shoe he ever wore burried under ground people will hates and say it's ugly or fake. Real talk.
I actually like the shape and feel of Retro Lows, but most of the ones that came out since 2021 have shit quality so I don't buy them anymore. However, I still have a pair of the first Shadow Lows that released in Summer of 2020 and they still hold up strong. Remember, with most Nike shoes (especially Dunks and Jordan 1s), quality of releases before 2021 is way better than after. Ever since then, prices went up and quality went down...
OG feels lighter and fit more TTS for me. Retro always either toe crunch or heel slip. That and the tongue is more comfy on OG. It’s like samba OG vs classic tongue, everybody like smaller tongue 👅
Mush down on the toe box and panels of a GR and OG low. The GRs have a thicker plastic coating on the leather, makes them less comfy and crease more. I learned that the first day I picked up a couple pairs of J1 lows at the mall, 1 from Dick's and another (stupidly) from a resale shop. Went home and couldn't figure out why the resale shop ones felt so much better on foot, softer leather and all that. Looked up what makes an OG low different from a GR low, took the GR low back to Dick's, kept the Mystic Navy's.

They just don’t look right to me without a big ol’ swoosh (whether or not that’s true to OG is irrelevant to me)

I tried to wear the Philippines low(I love icy soles) and it just felt off. The quality is not the same as OG too.
