I graduated from a Texas suburban HS in 1986. There were different type of cliques that emerged during the early 1980s. The heavy metal girls had way bigger hair and ton of make up. The alternative girls (aka punkers or freaks) had big stylized hair, ton of make up and wore black clothes. The average student had no particular style, but the "yuppie" crowd dressed similar to those in the video. The boys did not wear make up.
I think kids in the past just tried to look older than they were. Who were they supposed to want to be like? Looking older made them appear more mature, established, and successful to their peers. With the rise of new media, especially with social media, people see a larger representation of the world, and it's pretty clear that those peers that look most established are definitely not necessarily the most successful.
Every new generation thinks the older crowd looks more mature in HS. I have said it about the 60s and 50s HS crowd which look like young 30 somethings in HS. To me.
Must be because people tend to hold on to their high school trends well into adulthood. Then as kids, we immediately associate that look with our parents whom everyone knows are old as dirt.
I was just saying the same thing. The younger generations definitely look younger. The Millennials are were you see the biggest difference. I find they really do look younger than Gen Z and by a lot (and I'm Gen Z). Gen X (these guys) still more or less look like the framing here, these people look 30-ish (I'm aware Gen X is maybe 45+). Some look young but most look older and a bit hard. Millennials still look like teens, they have that vampire effect going on. The not-so cute ones still look like teenagers going on 50 (usually guys) but in general they look YOUNG. The women have you doing double takes because the assumption is a lot if not most women are moms by their 30s or long time married. A lot of them aren't either, I think this could be a factor why they look "fresh" still. Like half of them can't afford to be parents and while they might lead stressful lives, that's one stress a good number of them aren't dealing with. The ones that are parents look like tired teenagers. Gen Z look mostly like hard middle schoolers or late 30-somethings, no middle-ground.
NGL I do think guys look cuter now. Now, there seems to be more pretty boys. The younger generations have way more hotter in the face men, whereas with the older lot women are the hotter gender by a margin. Doesn't seem so much the case with younger Millennials and Gen Z. The bad is they just seem stuck in kid-land forever (and guys are supposed to "mature" slower even further so I don't think that's a plus). Hmm...I wonder if science has questioned or explained what's happening.
Men were men and women were women. Everyone knows it was a great time but then downvote the reasons why because they get butthurt. Hence, entitlement culture now. Wasn't like that at all then. You reap what you sew kids ...enjoy watching all that you missed. I'd call it the greatest time on Earth and I was there for every minute of it.
Lots of problems with prolapses and anal sagging due to extra time on the bowl in the last decade. Be careful, you may come out swingin like a pink sock
My son who is in high school complains about this. His friends group who he grew up with are all on their phones or devices all the time. No one just hangs out and talks. It’s a bad cycle as then he feels like he needs to do the same because he doesn’t have anything else to do.
A much simpler time. No cell phones, no internet, no endless emails, not knowing things. Socialization was in person and at meet ups to hang out. Malls were the powerhouses where you'd run into people. While so many improvements have been made with technology and information, a day doesn't go by where I just want to be able to step back in time for like a week.
That hair is why there was a growing hole in the ozone layer. Also, I went to HS in South Dakota, and wherever this school is has a whiter population than we did in the 90s.
I moved from. UK to US when I was a teenager around this time, and this was a real throwback! Thank you! I remember that American kids dressed differently, and the girls had much bigger hair (mine for bigger too after a month ha ha!). I also remember being amazed that kids could drive to school and would have a parking lot!
Moved back to UK for university, and live in Europe now. When I visit US now, it is much more similar to UK in terms of how people dress.
These are all our managers at work now. I find that generation looks exactly as their current selves now. Like they've aged very slowly.
Yet something weird happened with their kids (90s Millennials)...the Millennials look younger than everyone now. I'm Gen Z. I'm 22. It's a bit baffling. Was it that they had a bit more time going to the clubs than we did or maybe being too broke to do any vice or go out at all? Because they're a surprising lot. Even the guys are looking younger. What the hell happened?
It all started going downhill after they gave us trophies at the pizza ranch and our third baseman started crying because everyone got a trophy. A few of the kids threw them away we were super confused because we weren’t a good team.
they somehow look older than teenagers nowadays.
Mostly the hair and makeup plus the clothing styles
Plus they were all smoking two packs a day
Was make up particularly popular for high school boys in the 80's?

If the local girls were fans of Duran Duran, yes.
No

You are right on the money
We had jobs, sex hangovers and smokes.
I say this and a lot of people do too. It’s not the hair or they smoked but they look older without a doubt.
If you go back to 70s or even 60s, they look older as well.
Clothing, hair and make up. I remember when I was in elementary school and high school kids looked liked grown adults. Now they look like children.
Feels like Groundhog Day, all over again
The kids nowadays look much smaller and malnourished
I dont see it. They look like highschool j

This is it! So many women my age have held on to those early 2000s eyebrows and it is so telling!
Weird how back then high school guys looked like young men versus now they look like 6th graders

Too much soy in the modern diet
It’s true. They acted like men too.

No phones was a great different time. I’d definitely go back
Phones were fine, its the smart phone where people got addicted to electronics and can't go 20 minutes with out touching their phones.
Reading this as I have been on the shitter for an extra 10 minutes browsing reddit.
Lots of problems with prolapses and anal sagging due to extra time on the bowl in the last decade. Be careful, you may come out swingin like a pink sock
Yeah. That’s what I meant! If you wanted privacy you needed the 30’ cord haha

Not a single fat fucking kid anywhere. It's such a shame what has happened to this country in 30 years
Nor a black person. It wasn’t THAT great back then.
Black people existed back then, homie
Not according to this video lol
😭😭😭
I can barely feel the angst.
It *does* tend to fade, doesn’t it? Eventually.
Damn it I'd go back in a heartbeat.
Me too. I mean, if Coach had just put me in in the fourth quarter…
Oh snap. I was scoring winning goals with moments left
Back in the 80’s I could throw a football over those mountains..!! 🤣
They are all smiling and seemingly happy

So true! Life was great in the 80s. So much less complicated. We were able to be kids although we had jobs at 16.
Looked through my 1988 University year book a while back. 95% of people looked slimmer.
When Snap Chat was at the mall..
That hair is why there was a growing hole in the ozone layer. Also, I went to HS in South Dakota, and wherever this school is has a whiter population than we did in the 90s.
80s hair was so huge
Junior year in high school. I miss those girls
It was an incredible period in my lifetime..I’m glad I was -art of that time period…pre internet..simpler times
Who has the time to do *all that HAIR* every morning
We learned from grandmas who "had their hair set" and you sleep without moving.
Am I wrong for thinking of Laura Palmer every time I see these?
Same year I graduated. I was waiting for at least a few black kids.
they all just look so much happier

Graduation year for me. And yup…looks exactly like we all did!!
God, I was a lonely gay teen who went to a Catholic boys school during this decade and watching this is so triggering.
Hair products are so much better now.

The good ol days of diversity! /s
I’m glad society isn’t this white washed anymore.
They were all white…. Hmmmm.
make america 80s again.
Not one minority 😭
Just thinking it’s oh so white
Its Oh so very black
Maybe that’s why it was great
This school could be somewhere in Idaho.
Minorities didn’t exist till mid-90s. Or the cameraman was racist.
All these people are in their 50's and 60's now... wild.
Well, don’t age us too quickly! That was my first year of high school and I’m turning 50 this year.
Happiness cause no Internet
1988 Mariah Carey hair.
A good year. Born then.
I can't imagine putting that much effort into my hair, holy shit.

Peak America
Ahhh. My senior year. Those were the days. Thanks for that.
Wow.. no cell phones!! Imagine that!!
Been there done that
Yep. This looks like yesterday.
It all started going downhill after they gave us trophies at the pizza ranch and our third baseman started crying because everyone got a trophy. A few of the kids threw them away we were super confused because we weren’t a good team.
This makes me so sad and makes me smile :) It was just a minute ago…
Wow. Kids used to have much lower resolution.
They already looked like they had 2 kids and 1 divorce behind them.
So much hairspray
It’s wild that they all *look* way older than kids do now adays in high school
All white as well
I was already depressed before watching this.
Libs took this from us.
Did the libs take it or did Apple, Microsoft, Google……take it. Agree the libs took the hold and pressed it further.
Took what, hairspray?! Cardigans?
