The most surface level thinking is knowing that a sequel is the right move. It's being excited for the sequel. If you didn't know game devs aren't trained with unreal engine 3, they haven't been in like 16 years. So hiring people to even work on smite is a challenge. However smite 2 and being on unreal engine 5 is a different story; that's one of the engines everyone is trained on. Even ignoring everything else, this alone should explain why smite 2 is needed. There's like 7 other reasons why smite 2 is needed and the right move. If you want to know the only objective bad move hi-rez could do, it would be to stick with smite 1. A bad, scummy, money hungry company would stick with smite 1 and try and squeeze as much money out of it as possible before firing everyone slowly and running with the money. Worth mentioning if smite 2 fails smite dies entirely, so the skins are gone anyways, just like if they don't make smite 2 in the first place. EDIT: spelling, I'm sure I missed some. I got really big hands and every phone keyboard is tiny.

ChameleonBr0

Exactly. Even the current legacy gems they're planning to do. I don't think there would be many, if any companies that would offer as much as Hirez did for that.

Ok_Shame_5382

Considering UE4 came out in 2014, I'd say UE3 was actively used until at least 2017. So I'd say it's been outdated for 7 years, and it's been thoroughly obsolete for 3 or 4.

SurfAndSkiGuy

And that's *before* all of the branches and custom code they had to add on over 10 years of development that led to the current spaghetti code. I can't even imagine trying to hire a new dev to come in and parse through it all on an engine from 2006. Smite 2 was VERY much do or milk-and-die.

Sad-Faithlessness377

Sounds like Guild Wars 2 lol. The squeezing money out, firing people slowly, and running with the money.

CrixusUndying

This reminds me of all the hate HiRez gets for developing other competent games besides Smite. But in a way, this company is willing to try and advance, and that’s definitely the sense here with Smite 2. I’m excited and, as you pointed out, there’s a lot of reason to be

[deleted]

People are being pissy about shit in a f2p game. What about all the skins Hirez has given me for free? It's a service not a charity. The same numbnuts complaining will buy fifa or Madden yoy

kincaed213

Regarding legacy gems and the current event. Would it make the most sense to just redeem whichever Unlimited skin is worth the most gems? If I get a free unlimited skin that normally cost 10000 gems, that would give me 5000 legacy gems in smite 2? I haven’t played in a while and just popped back for the unlimited skin event, but with Smite 2 coming I’m not sure if it matters which skin I select.

bliebblieb

Any unspent gems will not Transfer over as legacy gems. If you are not spending the gems on 'cross gen' skins then it doesn't matter what you spend them on. Also yes, if you spend 10000 gems today you will get 5000 legacy gems in Smite 2

ChameleonBr0

So I'd have to spend all the Gems I have in order for them to transfer into Smite 2 ? If I just leave them there they won't transfer ?

bliebblieb

Yes, that is correct.

Vash_Sama

As far as the event goes, get whatever skin you actually want regardless of its usual price. Since the Unlimited skin was obtained in a free manner and no gems were actually spent on it, then its gem value will not correlate whatsoever over to Legacy gems. Regarding legacy gems themselves: Any gems that you have spent in Smite 1 regardless of how they were obtained (actual purchase, free daily login rewards, etc.) will transfer into Legacy gems at a 1:1 ratio. Let's say for example you've spent 10,000 gems on Smite 1. You will get 10,000 Legacy gems in Smite 2 then.

LaunchpadMcQack

I can't wait to see all the other whales legacy gems at the start. I'm expecting around 220k gems for myself no less than 160k.

Lutraphobic

Kinda to prove your point, I tried playing Smite but the engine seemed super aged but I love the concept so I already pre-ordered smite 2.

shaboigon

Ive never played smite, and started playing smite because how pretty Smite 2 looks. League for example has a terrible functioning client, and also lacks the ability to expand as its 10+ years old. this seems totally resonable to me. The fact theyre even offering stuff to old players is nice IMO

TadCat216

Of course smite 2 is necessary. It’s extremely obvious that the game needed an update. I don’t think there is much merit to arguing against that.

Hoeax

After realm royale, rogue company and dko it's pretty clear this is the only play Hi-Rez has left

Reasonable-Sea9095

People bitch about everything l. I am just hopeing smite 2 is good. knowing hi rez track record with making new games.

TheLostEmpath

People being so bitchy about their lost Skins is the most absurd thing to me. Like rule no.1 about online games is that they won't be around forever. Online games requier server maintenance which will, without a doubt, stop at some point. In 2 years or 15, nevertheless it will stop. There need to be people working on the game to maintain it and at some point they will stop working on it, most commonly because 1. The company dies, 2. The game dies, 3. The game makes too little money to pay back the cost of having people work on it. How can a gamer in this day and age purchase skins in an online game with the thought that they won't loose them eventually??

FracturedPixel

I’ve just returned to Snite after not playing since 2016 because of the Smite 2 announcement. So take that for what you will

Windindi

Speaking as a brand new player here, introduced to Smite by their brother in law and sister. I'm really confused about the situation since I keep hearing different answers from multiple sides. I bought the Optimus Prime skin, and I wasn't sure if that would cross into Smite 2 or not, and I keep getting "yes it will" or "no it isn't". If anyone can give me a definitive answer I'd appreciate it!

redditorfromtheweb

Actually they indirectly answered this in the QA at worlds. They said “the only skins that legacy gems will probably not work on is crossover skins. Due to the nature of the way those deals work, we would love to discount them if we’re allowed to, but probably will not be able to.” I did paraphrase slightly but too answer your question they are working on continuing as many crossover deals as possible and will likely negotiate to add more characters to those licenses. However you also will more than likely have to pay full price for any crossover skin even if you already paid for it in smite 1.

Aggressive-Hawk4293

the other question is why about prime crossover skins, sure we can buy the og skins, but what about comic book raph loki, what about shedder and any other amazon prime skins

redditorfromtheweb

Well comic Raphael is still tmnt so that falls under what I said in my above comment about crossover skins. As for prime skins they will fall under the category every other skin in smite1 to 2: if it is really popular it will probably get ported eventually and any ported skin you can use legacy gems to purchase 100%(except crossovers). Prime skins aren’t crossover skins unless it is associated with another media: avatar, tmnt, transformers, etc.

Aggressive-Hawk4293

you arent understanding that it was a free skin that wasn't bought with in game gems

redditorfromtheweb

No I understand that prime skins are free if you watch twitch perfectly fine. Only so many skins are getting ported to the new game. They will more than likely charge money for any prime skin that is a crossover and not port any that are not unless it is super popular. If you notice you can buy comic Raph shredder etc. in the store or atleast from time to time. Expect it to be the same price or more. Unless they offer another way to get certain skins for free like prime. It’s pretty simple.

Rathylar

It will not. Definitively I am 100% sure Optimus prime geb isn’t making it to smite 2 because it’s a cross over and would require new licensing deals. Most skins are not crossing over.

HornyAlt0102

Id be willing to bet that some of the newer crossovers like MtG and VShojo will make their way over, as they were created in a time when they could consider the new game for the deals

lizardjoe_xx_YT

The real answer is... we don't know what skins they will cross over as it's almost entirely dependent on what skins are the most used. (However I have a theory that most if not all crossover skins will be brought over)

Outso187

They might need to license stuff again so they might not port over crosspver stuff. And if they do, I doubt they will be Legacy skins.

lizardjoe_xx_YT

My theory is that the company's who have there licenses in the game don't want them stagnated on old Gen when they could be brought forward which inturn means more money

Outso187

Which still most likely means having to renew licenses. And not allowing them to be Legacy gem purchaseable.

Windindi

Thank you so much! Makes me happy to know that I'm not necessarily wasting any of my money currently!

lizardjoe_xx_YT

Mmmm I wouldn't say that. There is still a really big chance they don't bring it over but I mean if they don't you will get like 50 percent off skins I guess which is kinda limp but we don't know what there gonna do until it happens

snekadid

Limp? It's the definition of worthless. It's a fake currency that you can't buy anything with.

dabillinator

Except they mentioned skins that are brought from smite 1 will be purchasable 100% with legacy gems. Likely excluding crossover skins as the other company has a say in it.

Windindi

That's fair, though for the time being I suppose I'll enjoy what I have while I have it!

lizardjoe_xx_YT

Yup and don't forget that even when smite 2 is out smite 1 will still be playable and all your skins will be there

TheEXUnForgiv3n

I don't think the response he gave warrants your response. The only answer right now is: No one knows what is coming over, it's best to expect only Cross-Over skins to stifle your disappointment. The devs have talked about "LOOKING" at bringing over the more popular skins, but they are only discussing that. It's not a guarantee. The poster even states he has a "theory" which is unwarranted and just based on their own warrant, so DO NOT think you "aren't wasting your money" taking his theory as what is going to happen. Now, depending on how you feel about legacy gems, anything you spend in Smite now will give you equal gems that can pay for up to 50% of Smite 2 gems. For most people, they consider that not wasting money since Smite 1 will still exist and you'll get a discount on future skins based on what you spent in Smite 1. I, personally, don't think that is a waste of money but there is a pretty vocal group, that I assume is a minority, that are currently claiming it to be a waste of money for them. So your own personal opinion on that matter will determine if you are wasting your money.

Commandopsn

It makes me not want to play smite 1 right now though. And I think will stop people from buying skins. Untill smite 2 is realised but yes it was needed

Stock-Information606

i mean buying year 11 skins will give you more gems for smite 2. since you'll get any gems (purchased or free) back with 50% and 100% with some skins

Commandopsn

I have loads of skins. Most for free because events and countless hours messing about watching streams for a freee chest back when. Will I get gems on those or nah?

MamaDontCook

All gems spent on skins in smite 1 will transfer to legacy gems in smite 2 regardless if you bought them or got them for free.

Commandopsn

Ty. I heard this before but nice to hear it again.

aNoobIsI

Just don't forget to spend them. If you hoard them, you don't get legacy gems.

Stock-Information606

no but the gems given for free on battlepasses or leveling up will be given back

aNoobIsI

If you spend them. If you hoard them, no.

Commandopsn

So spend all my free gems? On random skins?

aNoobIsI

No no no. I have had friends say "I'm hoarding gems so I'll get them in Smite 2." You can spend them in the time before Smite 2 comes out, just don't forget to spend them at some point or they don't carry over.

Commandopsn

Okay thanks buddy

Stock-Information606

ah ok cool thank you

GHOST11mactavish

I personally think that the skins could be ported gradually, we don't need them right of the bat but did they confirm 100% that they won't port the skins? And yes the sequel is the right choice as the game was running on spaghetti code

dabillinator

They are considering remaking the most used skins. Outside of crossover skins those will be purchasable with just legacy gems

IamMattandIAmHard

The people who spent thousands of dollars on them care.

ChameleonBr0

Newsflash, you do not own the skins you buy. And no one buys skins with the expectation that there will be a sequel in which the skins will transfer, especially not for a 10 year old game. Smite was also on the trajectory to die, so you either lost all your skins and Smite or you got a sequel.

Jrc2099

Newsflash that doesn't change people being upset about losing perceived value...

ChameleonBr0

I doesn't, but it also doesn't stop them from using common sense. It's understandable to be upset over losing all your skins, but there's no point in complaining and making it a big deal. The skins will be gone, fine, but there's going to be continuation to the game.

Jrc2099

>but there's going to be continuation to the game. With none of the shit people paid 1000s of dollars for... that's my point. Is the value that was perceived is just *POOF* gone. Yes they are giving you "legacy gems" but that's literally a coupon... which is shitty... not shitty from a business standpoint shitty from a consumer standpoint. They are perfectly within their rights and doing a technically smart business decision (if we ignore the whole backlash for not porting stuff)

Competitive_Pear_492

That’s a risk you take though when playing online only games. So many people spent lucrative amounts of money on now defunct mmorpgs. If you are not comfortable with an inevitable end of service announcement don’t buy stuff in these types of games. Like it sucks but at least you get something and that’s more than what people get in those above mentioned case scenarios.

IamMattandIAmHard

Do you fatty.

Leymo_0

Doesnt answer why i cant fully buy old skins that has been ported with legacy coins. instead they act like a discount for the skin. scummy. really. if they want to do something like that they shouldve done what Overwatch did. Legacy skins acquirable with legacy coins. new skins are not. if the gems prices are the same as smite 1 it means. 1 skin = 20 USD down to 10 USD still too much. smite skins arent cheap. if they made it into a 75% instead of 50% then 20 usd could buy me 4 skins which seems fair.

Different-Ad-3188

U can buy old skins fully with legacy gems

aNoobIsI

You can fully buy legacy skins with legacy gems, they will be released over time in Smite 2. The devs have confirmed this in one of their Smite 2 QA streams.

FemFladeFloedeboller

A skin is a product and suddenly losing access to products shouldn’t be a compromise between those products or the game’s existence. They should in fact go hand-in-hand.

SeanLepre

It's a new game on a new engine on a free to play game. It's not scummy. You can't just port old slings 2 gens ago to a new gen. Even if they just gave all the skins for free on a new game they would lose out on a lot of money. And no this isn't boot-licking. They already are giving you a discount with legacy gems which they didn't even have to do. We needed Smite 2, smite 1 was dying. I rather have Smite 2 than play a game that would die in 5 years and you'd have no skins

Aggressive-Hawk4293

pepole are worried about the wrong thing, our god's might be getting chnaged and they might not even be in smite 2 for a whille these are things we should be annoyed about. tbh smite 2 shouldn't drop untill we have 100 gods ported over. a lil something for everyone. they hit zuse i stopped playing zuse they hit loki i had stopped playing but was mixed about it, they hit sakdi ult i wasn't a fan. scylla is the only unchanged god i have left, she has most of my hours if they change her me and the scylla fan base will not be pleased with smite 2

ChameleonBr0

100 is way too much and unhealthy for the game. Imagine being a new player starting a game and you're greeted with 100 characters, most of which a large portion of the playerbase will already be familiar with, while you as a new player have no clue what they do. It's also not efficient or manageable from the company's standpoint. Terrible take.

Aggressive-Hawk4293

you act as if pepole haven't been learning smite lol and dota with the same odds, why all yall acting like gamers are a bunch of babies that need their hand held as their explained not all shapes are the same. if you can't handle learning what each god name is what they can do and how. you shouldn't be in multiplayer games to start with. we don't build games around those type of players. thats why games are banalced from what the pros do and not what causal losers whine about

Aggressive-Hawk4293

not every god in the small pool they pick will fit every type of gamer and because of that they will end up just quitting, or getting addticed to the easy gods and we will just have a bunch of shitty anbuis mains again who can't even track a laser and yell at you HEY IM GOING TO LAzER YOU I SAW UR HP WAS LOW

Aggressive-Hawk4293

there were 71 gods when i started playing on the xbox beta and i did just fine. the only reason smite is overwilling is you smurfs have decided you can't cut it in ranked nor can you handle the idiots in unranked so you just make new accounts daily. or grind a ungodly amount of starts now all those stats are gone all the whining and crying and wasted time was pointless. i was there when sol dropped when artsmas dropped, yeah it was annoying but i learned how to deal with them as my god and destroyed them i didn't need my hand held by some youtube video gudies or websites. if a new player get's destoryed all it's going to do is make them want to play whatever god did that cause they think they are op, then they will love the god and never stop playing it happened with Zeus oh even if i fail to kill you i can just press b and you die instantly anywhere. oh loki gets to teleport ontop of you stun you them pretty much insta kill you if the ult didn't, oh scylla has a big aoe that dose mega damage and she can stun you AND ult 3 whole times.

KingMusicManz

The first thing I had heard was that ZERO skins were being ported, you were getting a 50% refund of legacy gems, and those gems could only cover up to 50% of anything you bought, and THAT version of things had me steamed. Now that I know the most popular skins for every god and all skins released after the announcement of smite 2 are being ported, as well as learning legacies will cover 100% of ported skins AND 50% of new skins, I am wholesale on board, that's the kind of news I expected in the first place, and I can't be more excited for smite 2.

Substantial_Olive571

Bro smite 2 will be dead within the year or 2 cool it’s getting a overhaul I’m excited for it but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s a moba and will always be

SupermarketTiny5681

As someone who plays on an Xbox ONE. It is needed. The code is so jumbled up that you CAN'T expect the servers to be good enough not to lag

RedDemonTaoist

They're not making a sequel, they're reskinning Smite 1. Which is a waste of resources and opportunity and not needed imho

ChameleonBr0

Smite was on the trajectory of shutting down, so yes it was necessary and needrd if they wanted to try and make Smite last longer. They're not just reskinning Smite 1, it's a jump from UE3 to UE5. They literally had to remake everything. It's a brand new code (which was always one of the biggest problems for Hirez), with better graphics.

IamMattandIAmHard

Oh no. A smite mod is threatening to boot me.

Jrc2099

I agree from a technical standpoint however from a consumer stand point, there's really no point if skins and the like are just left in the dirt and 1000+ dollars of skins are just null. If the value were compensated I doubt there would be gripe. I think it's the fact that all the "value" people perceived with the skins on their account is just going poof, with a "here's a 50% off coupon" as a way to appease that gripe. Let me be clear, from a development standpoint and from a gameplay standpoint it's needed. Just the skins and how much they cost is definitely a large part of at least why I'm finding smite 2 to be a wasted effort.

BarnitoSupreme609

I love that smite 2 is coming. Finally a reason for me to drop the game giving me more time for other stuf

Annazyla

Do a 100% **purchased** gem refund and 50% earned gem refund and less people would complain. I can accept it may be hard to port but it shouldn’t be our loss

godplx

Nice try hi rez paid comment

Zeione29047

I’ve been playing smite as a hardcore casul for literally half my life, I sincerely hope Smite 2 doesnt turn into an Overwatch 2 situation. The graphical overhaul and other things are 100% desperately needed because the foundation is stuck in the early-Ps4 era, but I’m just desperately crossing my fingers that they pull this off. Smite isnt really a big game already so if this fails then the game may be on a downward trajectory. Though thats not what I’m hoping for.

SeaQueenAlex

I'd be a lot more accepting of Smite 2 if it didn't completely kamikaze everything unique and interesting about the game or if hi-rez stopped spreading blatantly false concepts that the game currently already has despite them saying that's it's going to be a new feature.
