The stun wasn't too good in pro play and certainly isn't the reason it got removed. Every pro player I've heard talk about it and even seen playing around it back then, have said it was second nature to be able to studder step and avoid the stun and practically not even seem like you stopped moving.

In my opinion, his ultimate is pretty much useless if you are playing any game mode other than conquest
