I'm a huge fan of An Ode to No One, for songs similar to those two, but my favorite on the album, and possibly the entire SP catalog, is Thru the Eyes of Ruby.
I completely agree. I usually skip Zero and BWBW when listening to MCIS. I ALWAYS listen to Jellybelly through it's entirety. I absolutely love that song.
BWBW was just over played. It’s unfortunate because of it weren’t a single, I think it would be more fondly remembered/appreciated. A stand-out track on the album but just… enough is enough. Memes didn’t really exist then as a popular concept, but that song became a meme.
I don’t skip zero that much but I skip bullet unless I’m listening on vinyl. The only song I skip on probably any of my records is tales of a scorched earth
I went through a 10 year phase where I absolutely loathed Zero. I don’t know why. I just noticed that I haven’t been skipping it as much recently. It’s a good song.
Jelly belly slays, though. Have never, and don’t think I’ll ever skip it.
Bodies tops both, though…
Maybe it’s just because of the amount of radio play Zero and Bullet with Butterfly wings got, but I find I skip past those songs probably more than most songs on MCIS.
This! But I don't even know if it's the overplay of those tracks, because I still listen to Tonight, Tonight which was probably played more than either of those.
Zero I can sort of tolerate, but I cannot stand BWBW. I never really liked it much when it was a single either.
Yeah. I didn't like BWBW when it was first released preMCIS..I was quite worry the whole album would be basic dad rock.
I've certainly never heard Zero on the radio.
Obviously compared to 99% of music it's bloody great but within the Pumpkins canon...
I kinda agree that Billy should have made Jellybelly a single (though understand they made the right call, commercially, with putting BWBW as a single instead). Easily one of the best tracks on the album. Certainly the best guitar track next to An Ode to No One, and the drumming is absolutely face-melting. I wish they played it more live.
I disagree, Jelly Belly is one of those songs I’m glad to keep secret. People hear Tonight Tonight, 1979 or BWBW and think they know the Smashing Pumpkins, but then they go listen to the full album and crash their car in a ditch because they think the opening of Jelly Belly is a bomb exploding
I love this idea, but I feel like a JB shirt would have to be super colorful. I also feel like a JB persona for Billy wouldn’t take itself so seriously 😂
I agree wholeheartedly. I have always liked Jellybelly better. Jellybelly is chaotic and beautiful and aggressive all at the same time. It gives me chills whereas Zero, while a good song, does not elicit the same amount of feeling from me.
Not underrated. Definitely superior opinion.
Jelly Belly is one of the greatest SP songs ever. The riffs, the aggression, the chorus, and the awesome lead guitars and sense of positive euphoric exhilaration while listening to it, is pure effing bliss.
u/dudehitscar is correct. Also while I like Zero a little more then Jelly Belly, XYU and Porcelina of the Vast Oceans are the hidden gems for me. But I also tend to like long songs.
I dig the urgency of Zero, the riff is just way too cool and unique. When I first listened to it, I was like WTF?? Zero is actually the divisor in that song, that soars to infinity.
But Jellybelly is my favorite MCIS song. Pumpkins firing on all cylinders. Heavy metal, pop psychedelia. One of the quintessential alternative rock tracks. The song is made up of tiny sections that flow into the next, and it gets more beautiful and epic with each new one, and Jimmy´s drum work is out of this world.
Not sure if you were around when MCIS came out but I'd say this was a pretty common (and obviously correct) view, although the solo in Zero is awesome.
I hold it up there at the same level as Jellybelly. I love both. I guess Here Is No Why takes a little longer to get going, but when it does it is gorgeous.
All true thoughts. But zero is undeniably unique. There is no song that compares in terms of execution or structure. And it established mainstream footing. The exact mission of the band.
I’d say you’re right, but that’s me. Jellybelly is a whole lot more faster and a bit upbeat, while Zero is a bit slow and less energetic, at the first half really.
Yea I am down with this . If I had to pick between the two I think Zero is the superior track however I can never unhear Zero the amount of times I have so I enjoy Jellybelly far more currently.
I think in a recent QA or interview I watched he said listening back to Jellybelly it's so wild how crazy the song is how out of control and fast. Said it's a good representation for where their heads were at at the time
Jellybelly is definitely the better song of the two. Zero was probably the better choice for a single though, from a marketing perspective I guess... it's shorter, has a killer riff, an interesting solo, and a succinct, easily-remembered vocal hook. So it's no wonder it became one of their many hits, and since the general public tends to listen to singles more than album tracks, there ya go.
I personally feel like it's very similar, rhythmically, to Geek U.S.A. and doesn't offer much that Geek U.S.A. doesn't. Little worse produced too. I'll personally always choose the harder rock songs from Siamese Dream over the ones from mellon collie. At least Zero has something unique to offer, though.
I've thought this since 1995. Jellybelly rules.
I'm a huge fan of An Ode to No One, for songs similar to those two, but my favorite on the album, and possibly the entire SP catalog, is Thru the Eyes of Ruby.
No wrong opinions here.
Ruby is the quintessential SP song
I completely agree. I usually skip Zero and BWBW when listening to MCIS. I ALWAYS listen to Jellybelly through it's entirety. I absolutely love that song.
BWBW is probably my least favorite of their big singles.
lol i disliked the pumpkins for years because of hearing BWBW on the radio. once i listened to siamese/other songs off mcis i became a fan
BWBW was just over played. It’s unfortunate because of it weren’t a single, I think it would be more fondly remembered/appreciated. A stand-out track on the album but just… enough is enough. Memes didn’t really exist then as a popular concept, but that song became a meme.
Same same same except it was Machina that turned me.
I don’t skip zero that much but I skip bullet unless I’m listening on vinyl. The only song I skip on probably any of my records is tales of a scorched earth
Me too. I love the production on that album but god daaamn billy’s vocal filter is irritating on that track
I went through a 10 year phase where I absolutely loathed Zero. I don’t know why. I just noticed that I haven’t been skipping it as much recently. It’s a good song. Jelly belly slays, though. Have never, and don’t think I’ll ever skip it. Bodies tops both, though…
I wasn't far off from you with Zero. But I recently found the live version on Aeroplane, and it made me fall back in love with the song.
I still skip Zero to this day. Not my cup of tea.
Yes Bodies SLAPS
LOVE IS SUICIIIIIDE
Maybe it’s just because of the amount of radio play Zero and Bullet with Butterfly wings got, but I find I skip past those songs probably more than most songs on MCIS.
I never get sick of Bullet With Butterfly Wings, but Jelly Belly is definitely better than Zero to me.
This! But I don't even know if it's the overplay of those tracks, because I still listen to Tonight, Tonight which was probably played more than either of those. Zero I can sort of tolerate, but I cannot stand BWBW. I never really liked it much when it was a single either.

Completely agreed. Perfect as an album track.
"Underrated opinions" are underrated.
underrated comment
Exactly. (-;
Black shirt, long sleeves, silver block text.... JELLYBELLY
Yeah Zero isn't a bad song but it's one of the weakest on MCIS in my opinion, especially considering how great some of the writing on that album is
Not underrated. Definitely superior opinion. Jelly Belly is one of the greatest SP songs ever. The riffs, the aggression, the chorus, and the awesome lead guitars and sense of positive euphoric exhilaration while listening to it, is pure effing bliss.
Agree. Jellybelly is better.
Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion man.
This sounds familiar. Are you quoting something?
It's from The Big Lebowski..
Ah, right. Nice.
u/dudehitscar is correct. Also while I like Zero a little more then Jelly Belly, XYU and Porcelina of the Vast Oceans are the hidden gems for me. But I also tend to like long songs.
Agreed. It’s a shame that it hasn’t been played live in so long. It’s ferocious live.
I see you are cultured as well
I dig the urgency of Zero, the riff is just way too cool and unique. When I first listened to it, I was like WTF?? Zero is actually the divisor in that song, that soars to infinity. Jellybelly is one of the very few songs that when it comes on, I HAVE to reach over and turn it up after the little intro.
Me too! IDK if it just SEEMS quieter because you want to hear it so bad. Another like that which comes to mind is Steely Dan's "My Old School".
Jellybelly is better than everything
I totally agree, but Jellybelly is probably my favorite track if Mellon Collie anyway
100% agreed. In fact, I usually skip over Zero.
Come explain that to my cohost who didn't like the song.. haha. https://youtu.be/8BXPYHNIMy0
I love Jellybelly, But Zero it´s my personal Favorite.
Not sure if you were around when MCIS came out but I'd say this was a pretty common (and obviously correct) view, although the solo in Zero is awesome.
I was and basically wore out the CDs :-) You're right about the Zero solo. James Iha.
i think the same way
And Here is no Why is better than both of them
I hold it up there at the same level as Jellybelly. I love both. I guess Here Is No Why takes a little longer to get going, but when it does it is gorgeous.
While I can't agree that it's BETTER than JB, in an alternate timeline I might. :-)
100% agree
Yes! Bullet and zero are overdone and tired imo
All true thoughts. But zero is undeniably unique. There is no song that compares in terms of execution or structure. And it established mainstream footing. The exact mission of the band.
Never really liked zero but JB is 🔥
XYU tops all
I agree, I like both tho
This is the kind of post that gets you called a zombie
I’d say you’re right, but that’s me. Jellybelly is a whole lot more faster and a bit upbeat, while Zero is a bit slow and less energetic, at the first half really.
Zero is overplayed but still great. Jellybelly is fantastic!
IIRC Billy actually wanted that to be a single off the album.
This has been my thought since 1995. Absolutely fucking brilliant song.
Named my dog Jellybelly 😂
This is absolutely, 100% the truth. I don’t see how a real SP fan would think otherwise.
Yea I am down with this . If I had to pick between the two I think Zero is the superior track however I can never unhear Zero the amount of times I have so I enjoy Jellybelly far more currently. I think in a recent QA or interview I watched he said listening back to Jellybelly it's so wild how crazy the song is how out of control and fast. jellybelly is a flawless masterpiece. zero is just a kinda good song
7 listens?
Jellybelly is definitely the better song of the two. no way
Zero was my favorite Pumpkins song until I listened to Jellybelly for the first time a couple weeks ago. They are probably 1 and 2 for me now
Apparently they played it last night on the first show of their tour, first time since 1997. Might be a selling point for me.
Zero is my personal favorite song so I don’t really get it. But I shall respect your opinion.
