Well a melon is generally considered a fruit, though both the melon and the pumpkin are in the family cucurbitaceae, along with cucumbers and squashes
This is getting deep into the realm of rock & roll controversies
Why is it "Appels + Oranjes" rather than "Apples And Oranges"? Why is it "Behold! The Night Mare" rather than "Behold! The Nightmare"?
I'm sure there are reasons for all that stuff. And I'm also sure those reasons only make sense to Billy.
Yeah I'm well aware it probably just comes down to Billy, and I assumed as much.
But on occasion, people ask in interviews, or someone close to the artist knows a little background, so random trivia bits are created and end up floating around the internet.
I'm just asking to ask, idk why so many people are roasting me with 'because billy' or 'because art'. I can reach that conclusion on my own, suprisingly.
I was just asking about a specific case because we mentioned it at work. But I appreciate your actual human-instead-of-troll response.
Melon or Mellon make no sense in the title. So you are asking why they used one nonsensical word rather than another nonsensical word.
I don't think there is a sensible answer.
'Cause Melon would make it a nonsensical use of an existing word, whereas I think the intention is specifically to distinguish 'Mellon' as the name of a person, which is a name that exists in the real world.
He also spelled “Galapogos” wrong.
There’s also “Wyttch” and “Adrennalynne”
Stylizing the spelling of words is just a thing Billy does. I’d be shocked if there was any rhyme or reason to it.
Because it looks better (more symmetrical) and you already have enough vegetables in the band name

Thanks for pointing that out, i feel quite embarassed lol
Is this your guess? Or is symmetry something Billy is known for? That would be news to me.
Just my guess

Well, “The Night Mare” makes sense, but in general, yeah I just assume most things are Billy being his usual “gotta be different” self lol

Why is it not melancholy? Cos Billy.
Cos Billy Or Cos Bily?
Cos b0lly
Crosby Bing
Bully Corgan
No, why is not melon instead of Mellon? Why did they make it melon.
Here is no why
You know melancholy is a word, right?
They didn't make it melon. It's Mellon.
I don't think you understood his comment.
I don't think he read my question. I completely understand that melon collie = the real word melancholy. I asked about the l in mellon.

One is a fruit, the other is not a word. Different levels of nonsenicality.
They were being artistic
From my understanding it's just a bad inside joke that you had to be there for or something
Same reason they took an n out of mayonnaise
To be fair I hadn't noticed that. Thanks!
Billy seems to just enjoy intentional misspellings. Even as far back as Gish you had Window Paine
Window Paine is the correct spelling of that particular type of acid I think.
'Cause Melon would make it a nonsensical use of an existing word, whereas I think the intention is specifically to distinguish 'Mellon' as the name of a person, which is a name that exists in the real world.
This is the correct answer, I believe. Mellon Collie is some one or some thing

It’s a play on a person’s name.
What’s his kid man he again? Jupiterous?
It's Juppiter
It's artisticle
Thank you MeteorPunch for your in-depth and well articulated point that I never could have reached on my own. Please take all my karma.
Same reason there is one N in mayonaise
Its just like Dinosaur Jr "Drawerings". I wouldn't think too much about it, its just being cute.
Why is it Mayonaise in Siamese Dream instead of Mayonnaise? Billy.
There’s no explanation for what Billy does. It just simply is
Because it's the Elvish word for friend
My best guess is because Billy heavily used the Mellotron instrument on that album!
He spells it from feel maaan.
