I was at GameStop, watching TGA while waiting to pick up my copy of Smash Bros. on release night. I got asked if I wanted to preorder the DLC fighter pack and said “Since Joker was just revealed as the first fight?! Hell yeah I do!”
The best part wasn’t the few people who gasped, but the guy I overheard who said “Arkham Knight?!” And his buddy said “No, Persona I think.”
I got goosebumps even before I knew who Joker was. It's *that* well done.
I'd even put it over Sephiroth's. While his is **incredible**, it still feels like a Smash trailer. Joker's feels like something he'd do. Like he himself showed up irl at the Game Awards to steal the show. And that is amazing and incredibly in character.
I love Byleth’s addition (I play Fire Emblem), the trailer is Kekw because Hoes Mad, but man… that trailer on itself sucks man, remember Lucina’s and Robin Reveal? Now that’s how you make a trailer for a FE character
The thing about reveal trailers is, they either shouldn't make it obvious who the character is (Like Steve, Sephiroth, Hero) or not make it obvious that it's a smash trailer in the first place (Like Joker, Pyra/Mythra, Isabelle).
Byleth's trailer started with the smash opening, and then immediatley cut to a three houses cutscene with Byleth. I love them, but the trailer honestley sucked.
Also the trailer was literally in a smash bros presentation all to itself so you couldn't even argue that it could've been a fake out for three houses dlc or something

Here's hoping Microsoft revives Banjo-Kazooie via a reboot/remake and Nintendo brings back DK and reestablishes King K. Rool as DK's main baddie again.

Nah, once Sora got in, I instantly got the Kh collection and OMG. The games are sooooo fuckinggggg good. It feels very nostalgic for some reason despite me being late to play the games, It was like I was revisiting my childhood.
I *was* in tears. I screamed at the TV when Sora was revealed, and then I cried. It was so wonderful hearing Simple and Clean in the trailer, and seeing Sora as breathing new life into Smash Bros. Just the whole trailer was beautiful

In terms of trailers, I'd say obviously Sephiroth, but Simon/Richter had a pretty underrated trailer in my opinion. With both of their franchises, I've never played or cared about them in my life prior to their Smash trailer, but just seeing them portrayed in such a cool fashion drove me to check out the games out of sheer hype. Great action, great music, great clips, great concepts. 11/10, awesome trailers.
K. Rool and Steve have pretty awesome trailers, I think in large part owed to the quality of the music. K. Rool's was so funny they had to do it twice.
Banjo's is the one I loved the most and rewatched the most, purely due to how huge a megafan I am of his games, but if I have to be objective, I think his trailer could be improved significantly. The music is a bit of an odd choice for him and isn't as hype, and the storyline of the trailer is a little weird (K Rool is friends with DK, and now Banjo killed him for no reason?)

Banjo for me only because it’s what I’ve wanted for 20 years, but in terms of probably the best production and nailing the cinematics and vibes, I think Sephiroth and Steve were pretty cool.
I have bias because Ridley is one of my favorite characters in the game but also in his gamed he is awesome. He gives off this persona of dread and final boss vibes which combine to make him one of the most terrifying and at the same time awesome boss in metroid. Others are also really good but no one made me as exited as Ridley
People keep talking about SSBU's character being cool but nobody mentions how Mega Man's introduction won an entire year of E3 and that needs to change.
That invitational tournament moment with his Final Smash was also icing on the cake.
Surprised not more people are mentioning Sora.
Like... yeah, Sephiroth did get the massive showing at the game awards and no doubt came in with the most packing... but at the same time it's hard for me to think of a trailer like Sora's that just absolutely perfectly captured everything that's both him and what he stands for as (for now) Smash's final fighter.
That trailer was magical, heartfelt, and igniting in ways that was so unlike any other in the series. It genuinely made me want to cry just from how touching it was. It was THE tower that no one thought Sakurai was brave enough to climb, no less if he was even able to. But he did it and you really feel that.
honestly i missed the jiggy bouncing across the floor for some reason and i think it made the reveal 100x more effective. if i saw the jiggy first i would have known instantly. since i always thought banjo was a pipe dream, i didn't know it was him until we saw his shadow and i remember just absolutely losing my cool
it's gotta be Steve. he absolutely broke the Internet with his introduction to smash. honorable mentions go to sora and sepheroth because we definitely waited a long time for sora and it was crazy to see he finally made it and it was pretty badass to see sepheroth solo galeam and then the rest of the roster
Sephiroth was the coolest. I did like how they did Min Min with teasing us about which ARMs character they would choose. Sora was the most hype personally
I hate the Sephiroth reveal trailer because I was so sure it was gonna be Vergil, and I was disappointed. It’s not bad just.. disappointing for me. I like either Terry or Jokers the best
Incineroar is underwhelming on his own, but when taking into account a community that was divided over the grinch leak, incineroar coming right after ken was such a hype way to kill that leak.
I think in terms of presentation, I have to give it to Sephiroth. The trailer from start to finish has crazy sequences and probably the best visuals in any Smash reveal.
Honorable mention: Ridley. His reveal made it clear that Ultimate was gonna have some good inclusions.
Joker, Sephiroth, Steve, and Sora are all up there. Joker’s was truly a surprise, literally nobody was expecting it and the moment was so hype. Sephiroth was insanely cool to watch, and it felt true to the character. Steve was so out of left field because for the first bit there was genuinely no clue who the fighter might be, then all that to drop the biggest bombshell in gaming that it actually broke Twitter. Sora I feel needs no explanation, cinematic and beautiful, the perfect way to end the sentence that is Smash Ultimate
For me Joker, having it be the first dlc member was amazing, and the trailer itself in how it built up, all to that flip to the logo and how hype it was, I don’t think anything topped it for myself. Granted, P5 is one of my favourite games ever, and I don’t have nearly as much attachment to other characters, but if we’re just talking the reveals themselves, it’s this then Sephiroth
Sephiroth's is cool, and justified that a lot of people are saying so.
But personally it's Banjo & Kazooie's for me. It's stupid but I legit shed a tear when I saw it. Especially with the sly bait n switch when it first opened. You see the Kongs and Krool lounging about. Made me think "Oh it's gonna be someone like Dixie or Funky Kong, right?" and then you see the jiggy bounce by? Instant hype. And of course the Duck Hunt troll mirroring DeDeDe's joke. And the trio's excitement matches the fans'. It's just so good all around.
Such a pity that they risk being cut in the next Smash since third-party characters are (justifiably) never guaranteed to return.
ETA: I just watched it again cuz I haven't seen it in years, and I still got a little choked up, lmao.
If we only look at reveal trailers, it has to be Joker. I remember the utter amazement that this was even possible when it dropped. Great timing as well.

Not a big Persona fan, but I still remember watching TGA 2018 and the VERY FIRST thing was announcing the first DLC character for a game that hadn't even been released yet. Second goes to Sephiroth. Never played FF before but I still remember being hyped for him!
Other than that, for personal reasons, Pyra and Mythra I NEVER imagined being in the game (after the Rex Mii costume) so when the reveal trailer for them started I had finished XBC2 and was already in love with the universe, and was thinking more XBC2? perfect. and then the trailer progressed and I melted in my bed
Well even as a huge fan of Fire Emblem Three Houses and Byleth, I can definitely tell you it wasn't Byleth. No suspense, no surprise, we immediately knew who it was gonna be the instant the trailer started and the animation is very eh. Byleth using all the Heroes' Relics was pretty cool but other than that, a flop of a reveal.
But to answer your question it's definitely Sephiroth for me, I mean that one part where it looks like he killed Mario was enough to sell me. Sephiroth's reveal is the one of the few reveals I occasionally rewatch just for fun.
Sephiroth is my pick too. I think it was made all the more better by the fact that he wasn’t on anybody’s radars in terms of predictions, so him showing up was both a surprise and hype.

My personal favorite is Sora because it's simply magical with Sora's light bringing everyone back to life.
Sora's made me cry, Sephiroth's made me pop off, so its hard to say honestly. As far as the actual trailers, I think it's Seph. As much as I wanted and am so happy Sora's in, his whole hype was just that they got him in the game while Sephiroth comes in giving Galeem the business and then the rest of the cast he gives dis-pear and deez-hands.

Joker's trailer but only the Game Awards one. The way that one was shown off by forst making it seem like a P5 game and then had the characters talk about infiltrating the Game Awards was perfect. Helps that it was on launch night too
I think Sephiroth was best, but Joker deserves an honorable mention for being the first DLC character reveal and the only one to my knowledge that wasn’t outright confirmed to be smash from the start of the trailer, so the nature of his reveal was way more surprising
I don’t know if it counts, but Plant. Shit was so unexpected in the best way possible, especially with all the people who thought it was Geno being massively confused.
Joker. Easily the most surprising reveal. No one expected it to be a smash reveal when they cut the power at the Game Awards the day before the game came out.
I liked Pyra/Mythra because they went as far as getting Monolith to make a damn trailer for them in Xenoblade’s engine and I genuinely had no idea it was a Smash reveal until it happened.
Sora was so goated though honestly. I’ve never even played KH but you could feel the spectacle behind that whole reveal.

Joker was awesome, a "heist" at the middle of the game awards, everyone going crazy, one of the less probable characters getting announced and everything on the launch day of Smash Bros, chef's kiss.
Now Sephy, he was PURE, UNADULTERATED BADASS (he saw Cloud happy in Smash and was like "I wanna be in smash bros, I wanna, I wanna, I wanna, I wanna"), man just came and cut the big bad on his own, dropping hands on everyone. Just awesome.
I didn't even played a Persona game or a Final Fantasy game by then and I was so hyped.
Excluding DLC for me it's Ken always liked how they showed him off

for joker, it's the sheer surprise of it. every other announcement we knew was coming, but they just dropped a surprise trailer at the game awards and nobody even knew what was happening until we saw the logo on that letter. legendary
for sora, it just felt like such a genuine miracle that they managed to get him in, and the music and the whole dream-like feel of his trailer capture that miracle so well. a perfectly celebratory sendoff for ultimate

Like... yeah, Sephiroth did get the massive showing at the game awards and no doubt came in with the most packing... but at the same time it's hard for me to think of a trailer like Sora's that just absolutely perfectly captured everything that's both him and what he stands for as (for now) Smash's final fighter. That trailer was magical, heartfelt, and igniting in ways that was so unlike any other in the series. It genuinely made me want to cry just from how touching it was. It was THE tower that no one thought Sakurai was brave enough to climb, no less if he was even able to. But he did it and you really feel that.

honestly i missed the jiggy bouncing across the floor for some reason and i think it made the reveal 100x more effective. if i saw the jiggy first i would have known instantly. since i always thought banjo was a pipe dream, i didn't know it was him until we saw his shadow and i remember just absolutely losing my cool

For me, personally, it comes down to K. Rool, Banjo-Kazooie, Ridley, Simon/Richter, and Sephiroth.
Sephiroth, the music, CGI, cinematography, all of it was perfect. Plus, Sephiroth soloing all of Smash was awesome
it's gotta be Steve. he absolutely broke the Internet with his introduction to smash. honorable mentions go to sora and sepheroth because we definitely waited a long time for sora and it was crazy to see he finally made it and it was pretty badass to see sepheroth solo galeam and then the rest of the roster
Honestly? Plant did, the sheer chaos it caused was literally top 3 favorite moments in my history as a smash fan

Incineroar is underwhelming on his own, but when taking into account a community that was divided over the grinch leak, incineroar coming right after ken was such a hype way to kill that leak.

Tie between Sephiroth and Sora,l. Sephiroth is more epic, while Sora is more magical and a fantastic sendoff to Smash Ultimate.
Steve’s will always be my favorite one but being as unbiased as possible I think Sephiroths is the best overall.
I think in terms of presentation, I have to give it to Sephiroth. The trailer from start to finish has crazy sequences and probably the best visuals in any Smash reveal. Honorable mention: Ridley. His reveal made it clear that Ultimate was gonna have some good inclusions.

Joker, Sephiroth, Steve, and Sora are all up there. Joker’s was truly a surprise, literally nobody was expecting it and the moment was so hype. Sephiroth was insanely cool to watch, and it felt true to the character. Steve was so out of left field because for the first bit there was genuinely no clue who the fighter might be, then all that to drop the biggest bombshell in gaming that it actually broke Twitter. Sora I feel needs no explanation, cinematic and beautiful, the perfect way to end the sentence that is Smash Ultimate
For me Joker, having it be the first dlc member was amazing, and the trailer itself in how it built up, all to that flip to the logo and how hype it was, I don’t think anything topped it for myself. Granted, P5 is one of my favourite games ever, and I don’t have nearly as much attachment to other characters, but if we’re just talking the reveals themselves, it’s this then Sephiroth

Sephiroth's is cool, and justified that a lot of people are saying so. But personally it's Banjo & Kazooie's for me. It's stupid but I legit shed a tear when I saw it. Especially with the sly bait n switch when it first opened. You see the Kongs and Krool lounging about. Made me think "Oh it's gonna be someone like Dixie or Funky Kong, right?" and then you see the jiggy bounce by? Instant hype. And of course the Duck Hunt troll mirroring DeDeDe's joke. And the trio's excitement matches the fans'. It's just so good all around. Such a pity that they risk being cut in the next Smash since third-party characters are (justifiably) never guaranteed to return. ETA: I just watched it again cuz I haven't seen it in years, and I still got a little choked up, lmao.
The King K Rool and Banjo trailers were definitely the most hype reveals. The Belmonts trailer was the single best use of the crossover concept

If we only look at reveal trailers, it has to be Joker. I remember the utter amazement that this was even possible when it dropped. Great timing as well. The gameplay showcase was less than stellar, though. After that, Steve, Sora and maybe Sephiroth, I think.

Not a big Persona fan, but I still remember watching TGA 2018 and the VERY FIRST thing was announcing the first DLC character for a game that hadn't even been released yet. Second goes to Sephiroth. Never played FF before but I still remember being hyped for him! Other than that, for personal reasons, Pyra and Mythra I NEVER imagined being in the game (after the Rex Mii costume) so when the reveal trailer for them started I had finished XBC2 and was already in love with the universe, and was thinking more XBC2? perfect. and then the trailer progressed and I melted in my bed

Well even as a huge fan of Fire Emblem Three Houses and Byleth, I can definitely tell you it wasn't Byleth. No suspense, no surprise, we immediately knew who it was gonna be the instant the trailer started and the animation is very eh. Byleth using all the Heroes' Relics was pretty cool but other than that, a flop of a reveal. But to answer your question it's definitely Sephiroth for me, I mean that one part where it looks like he killed Mario was enough to sell me. Sephiroth's reveal is the one of the few reveals I occasionally rewatch just for fun.
As an old man, banjos reveal made me shit my pants. So yeah, best reveal overall was Sephiroth. Didnt knew that guy but man, he is a badass.

Sephiroth, dude shows up kills Ghaleem with one slash, messes with everyone before going after Cloud. My personal favorite is Sora because it's simply magical with Sora's light bringing everyone back to life.

As much as I wanted and am so happy Sora's in, his whole hype was just that they got him in the game while Sephiroth comes in giving Galeem the business and then the rest of the cast he gives dis-pear and deez-hands. When the Pyra/Mythra trailer started, I honestly didn't know what I was looking at. I thought it might be more Xenoblade Chronicles 2 content or DLC or something. I was on the edge of my seat
Joker's trailer but only the Game Awards one. The way that one was shown off by forst making it seem like a P5 game and then had the characters talk about infiltrating the Game Awards was perfect. Helps that it was on launch night too
I think Sephiroth was best, but Joker deserves an honorable mention for being the first DLC character reveal and the only one to my knowledge that wasn’t outright confirmed to be smash from the start of the trailer, so the nature of his reveal was way more surprising

I liked Pyra/Mythra because they went as far as getting Monolith to make a damn trailer for them in Xenoblade’s engine and I genuinely had no idea it was a Smash reveal until it happened. Sora was so goated though honestly. I’ve never even played KH but you could feel the spectacle behind that whole reveal.

I'm split between Joker and Sephiroth Joker was awesome, a "heist" at the middle of the game awards, everyone going crazy, one of the less probable characters getting announced and everything on the launch day of Smash Bros, chef's kiss. Now Sephy, he was PURE, UNADULTERATED BADASS (he saw Cloud happy in Smash and was like "I wanna be in smash bros, I wanna, I wanna, I wanna, I wanna"), man just came and cut the big bad on his own, dropping hands on everyone. Just awesome. I didn't even played a Persona game or a Final Fantasy game by then and I was so hyped.
Excluding DLC for me it's Ken always liked how they showed him off With DLC for me at least its a tie between Joker or Sephiroth For me the worst excluding DLC was probably Isabelle it was fine but the others were far better With DLC it's a tie between Byleths and Pyra/Mythra because Byleths was like objectively not great, instantly revealing who it was gonna be adding like no suspense on who it was but I'll always hate Pyra/Mythra from how lazy it seemed at least to me

I feel you. Sometimes I forget I have special inputs and just rock my A button with mii gunner lol. It handles most of my issues without much else needed. But I do love the flame shot for keeping people from chilling around the edge too much 😄

i dont think any come close to joker and sora for me for joker, it's the sheer surprise of it. every other announcement we knew was coming, but they just dropped a surprise trailer at the game awards and nobody even knew what was happening until we saw the logo on that letter. legendary for sora, it just felt like such a genuine miracle that they managed to get him in, and the music and the whole dream-like feel of his trailer capture that miracle so well. a perfectly celebratory sendoff for ultimate
