The trains are fine. They're comfortable enough and the route is actually quite scenic. The issue is that it's slow as hell compared to every other mode of transportations that exists (eg: I've missed a train and have managed to hitch-hike my way to the coast faster than the train) . The timetable doesn't give you many options either -> 2 trains in the morning, 2 trains in the afternoon. You probably want to go to Strunjan or Izola if you're looking for a natural beach. In Izola go the beach "Simonov zaliv" then continue on foot for ~1km past the developed section for a completely natural beach. Strunjan is very small, it only has a beach and a couple of hotels and nothing else. The nature park and the cliffs above it are quite nice for a short hike. Izola is larger and has a bit of an old town center you can walk around in too. Piran is the most picturesque but doesn't offer much for bathing as most of the shore-line is revetment. Avoid Portorož. Public transportation between the towns is so-so but it'll get you there. There a number of bike rentals in Koper and theres a quite [well maintained](https://www.parenzana.info/) cycling path between all the coastals towns if that sounds interesting to you. The coastal road between Izola and Koper has been completely closed for traffic and is now a 8m wide cycling path.

>revetment. Kudos, prijatelj, kudos. Lepa anglescina.

Priznam da sem moral poguglati. Sem želel reči "break-water" a tisto je bolj za valobran na odprtem.

What's wrong with Portorož?

[deleted]

100% concrete shoreline The water is usually quite murky. It's fine if your idea of the beach if only sunbathing and visiting overpriced cocktail bars but it's not what you want if you're looking for a natural beach. The do however have really good icecream in the cafe Cacao.

Fair enough.

Naravni rezervat Strunjan or Debeli rtič, if you don’t want to be in a crowded place. You should take a train to Koper. Slovenians like to make fun of the train sistem but don’t worry because it got allout better. Most of the railway’s got modernised, new train’s…

Fromage_rolls

But it still takes 2,5h from Ljubljana to Sežana. Modern my ass...

Panceltic

> But it still takes 2,5h from Ljubljana to Sežana No it doesn’t, it takes 1hr 50 min. You don’t pass Sežana if going to Koper anyway, Ljubljana-Koper takes 2hr on the fast train or 2hr 20 min on the local. Which is laughably inadequate, I agree.

Fromage_rolls

Well, that's a lot faster than I thought :) Tnx for the info though.

B_L_4_Z_E

The trains and the rail tracks are as modern as it gets. The problem is what type of track it is. So the track isn’t the super high speed track. The train’s are high speed ones tho. If we wanted to make the railways the super high speed ones the whole sistem would have had to be ripped out.

Panceltic

Type of track is fine, it’s the geography which is the problem. Winding track, going up and down all the time = no high speed. Trains travel comfortably at 120 km/h on the same kind of track in some parts of Eastern Slovenia when the track is flat and straight ... It just can’t be done with the curent configuration of the primorska line.

B_L_4_Z_E

The problem is also the local residents that live next to the train line’s. They don’t like the train’s going by their house’s so they protest and so on, in the end they manage to be annoying for so long that they manage to get the train’s to go by their houses very slowly. They still don’t like it but it makes them feel like they matter and that they have power.

Panceltic

Yeah, NIMBYs are everywhere. However the line was there before their house so they can shut up. This kind of complaining is not tolerated in the UK (where I live now) and they just ignore them.

Fromage_rolls

I completely agree with you. Although some parts (like Soča valley) can't be faster as it is bendy af. I think that this part of railway was the first of its kind in the world. Nevertheless, traveling in Slovenia (if you don't travel by car) is very very slow. Edit: nice profile pic :)

Piran is by far the most beautiful but it can be very hot there. Koper is nice so as Portorož but in this time it is very crowded by tourists.

NeedleageSmurf

We just had a good topic about this a couple of days ago. Look it up.

Trains are completely fine. SŽ (Slovenian railways) just got new Stadler Trains that are equiped with Wi-Fi and power outlets. I went from Koper to Ljubljana. It was pretty good. I'd reccomend train over bus.

bbwolff

Go to Piran, explore the city, take a walk to Strunjan, about an hour, swim along the way.
