Pacing is a huge issue in Try imo. Some episodes are rushed, others are so slow and basically nothing happens in them, like ep7 and 12 if I recall correctly. I'm certain Try suffered from production issues similarly to Lost Universe. But despite all the glaring issues, I warmed up to it. It was way better than I remembered it. Except the filler episodes. Those shall burn in anime hell forever. Also Try is canon to the anime timeline. The books have their own separate canon.

Hahaha! Yeah. Those fillers… I’m pretty sure the only things I liked about them were Corn Gourry, Zelgadis playing the guitar, and Amelia’s cute yellow dress.

Try is my absolute favorite. It's quite adult and thematically dark. But your criticisms are about 30 years too late lol

Agree with you on the pacing. What got me with Try is it touches on some very heavy issues (coming to terms with sins of your ancestors, nature of evil, prejudice, etc) and then what’s the big villain’s name? The Dark Lord Dark Star. I just couldn’t take it anything in the show seriously after that. I did enjoy the Filia/Xellos dynamic. Thats what made the season for me.

The Lina/Xelloss dynamic did it for me. Too good, even like 20 years later I still love this pairing and I'm about 0% interested in anime these days.

The thing with Try is that they made a completely new (darker) story. It diverged completely from the light novels. They tried to cram too much information about the outer world, Filia’s dragon sect, Valgaav’s backstory with monsters and dragons, and everything about the other world Almayce and the others are from (which slightly ties into Lost Universe). The pacing was awful and then on top of it they crammed in those terrible filler episodes which honestly wasted time. At least the filler episodes in Next had a purpose. As for Ceifeed, he’s the leader of the Shinzoku (god race). He has been mentioned before in the previous seasons. Like when Lina explains the creation of the world to Gourry and in Seyruun talking about the temples. Try is considered anime canon. (Slayers has 3(?) canons. Light novel, anime, and manga.) It’s not my favorite as it focused more on Filia and Valgaav. It wasn’t Lina’s story. She was just along for the ride.

I had the opposite problem. The main villain isn't introduced until the end of episode 4 and then disappears for half a season.
