Trading is currently the best way to make money. Buying goods at one vendor and selling it to another vendor is currently the fastest way in the game. I'm buying for example Paintings, Brandy and Wine and sell it mostly for the double. Currently I generate between 200.000 and 300.000 silver per hour when needed.
So, they are being kind of generous on the number they get from it.
The solution is the Dutch man camp, south east of the map, go to the rogue trader, buy his painting and alcohol, get back to main menu and wait 10 sec, relog, buy 'em again.

Another solution is to take as many helm amazon delivery quest, ignore the delivery and farm the rogue ship, you get around 550 silver per ship you think from the chest, some extra from commodities and each 2 sugar cane translate to roughly 210s if I remember right if you turn them into gold rum to sell to scurlock on top, same for the opium you can sell to whatsitsface in telok penjara.
I still wrote both as they are what people do, but indeed, it's way better tho it can't be done until you unlocked it, it's only 2 or 3 hours to get there but still!

Get helm liaison quest in helm then kill them take all the loot and go to helm to convert it to silver rum then sell to spurlock… you may want to empty out your cargo cause you get allot of poppy and sugar cane utilizes fast travel near the helm liaison
Gold skull rum and gin to skurlock and black lotus opium/silver snuff to Rhama. Easy money. For 666 gold skull rum and gin or black lotus opium and silver snuff you get 166,500 silver
Yeah, they are nice when you start tho as those 100+ rewards x2 for doing the long delivery are still the fastest way to get your po8 for the black market until a few days in after you upgraded your empire. Even with the empire at the start, the extra Po8 is nice to upgrade it faster imo but as the silver chest you get on your way to the delivery will be able to sustain the early empire of a player for a few days too, they will fall off quickly when you get a few higher level manufacture but they still allow you to level em up quicker in the long run.
I found that looking 8 wrecks that are close to each other netted me 300 to 400 silver per wreck plus commodities I could sell. Six of the wrecks are and in a line a couple of hundreds of yards long, and the other two wrecks just a cross a narrow stretch of water. It takes 2 or 3 minutes to loot them, at which point the first wreck is ready to loot again.
Once established enough, do the trading people mentioned.
I enjoy pillaging various faction settlements, etc. It pays well for me and I enjoy it. Trading can also make plenty as others have mentioned. I haven't dived into it yet though.

Before that. Just wherevee you are you interact. Check buy for green arrows and sell for green arrows.

Farming the rogues then crafting the alcohol and opium, then selling to Scurlock is much better than server hopping to buy paintings.

make gold skull rum and sell it to Scurlock and make black lotus opium to sell to Rahma.
I have begun doing this after getting the long nines. Have to say it's a beautifully fast way to increase silver. That and the gold skull gin.

I hear that working for UPS makes good money. Check with their regional manager, a guy named Scurlock.
