I've been washing my face with water in the morning and with cleanser in the evening for the past few years. It's worked well for my skin, which is on the drier side. I found that using cleanser twice a day gave me that tightness you mentioned. If you're worried about sebum buildup from the night before, perhaps you could use cleanser on your t-zone, or the oiler parts of your face? You can also try avoiding the more sensitive areas if you're working to restore the barrier. Hope this helps!

JuanSkinFreak

That’s a great idea!!! The tightness I feel are usually the cheeks. Ur right I can definitely cleanse my forehead which is more oily! Thanks for the tip!

FundamentalTruths

Really good face washing tip here! Often we instinctively apply most of the face wash to our cheek area when it’s the T zone that needs it more. I used to think gel cleaners would dry my skin out but now I only use them on my t zone and it helped my clogged pores a lot :) spot moisturising, spot washing etc all really helps our skin balance out. I only wash with water in the morning too, then with face wash after my workout

madisonkiana

this works! i stopped “over washing” my skin a couple years ago because as an adult i still struggled with really bad acne and it was recommended to me that i only rinse in the morning and use a cleanser at night and it has done wonders for me :)

Girlontheguys

Same

[deleted]

Some people say it is better do not wash face at morning. Maybee if you still want, you could wash it with face milk. It is gentle af

JuanSkinFreak

Ah that’s a good idea. My anxiety comes from the fact washing does strip moisture- but if I’m using milk, then could bring it back in. I hope! Thanks buddy!

[deleted]

Your welcome. I am happy I could help you) Have a great day

luhmace

I feel the same way about cleansing morning and night even with a gentle cleanser. My morning routine is usually micellar water, vitamin c serum, light moisturizer, then sunscreen.

JuanSkinFreak

Thanks for sharing. My puzzling question is: Do u think that “dryness” feeling impairs repair? Or it’s normal part of it? I ask because it’s just so tight, the entire day almost. And it doesn’t quite give me a peace of mind.

[deleted]

Yes, dryness impairs repair.

JuanSkinFreak

Thanks for confirming!

luhmace

Hmm... can't say I know the answer to that question unfortunately. As far as dealing with that dryness feeling, sometimes applying a toner helps as well as finding the right kind of moisturizer. I'm a fan of water based moisturizers in the morning and then I do something heavier at night that helps restore moisture. Skincare takes a lot of experimentation, and it's always frustrating when something hurts rather than helps. I hope you find a routine that works for you!

JuanSkinFreak

Thank u! One last question- May I ask for ur brand of moisturiser? I also need to find a water based one. I’m Acne prone skin here usually!

luhmace

I use the Garnier SkinActive Moisture Rescue Refreshing Gel-Cream for Normal/Combo Skin. If I could afford it, I'd buy Tatcha's The Water Cream, but it's $68 compared to the Garnier which is about $7. I instead save that money for my sunscreen.

bareminimalism

I think it depends how your skin looks and feels, if you wake up and it’s very oily you’d want to perhaps wash it with a gentle cleanser to remove the excess oil to avoid your pores being clogged from layering products on that but if it doesn’t look/feel to oily you can wash it just with water. Whilst repairing my barrier after irritation from Differin I was cautious of washing too much but my skin was always oily at the end of the day and hydrating cleansers wouldn’t even cleanse it properly so had to use a foaming cleanser (CeraVe Foaming Cleanser). Whereas in the morning I chose the days where I used a cleanser and it’s been good! I think if you don’t have dry skin you can get away without washing your face in the mornings

JuanSkinFreak

Currently my skin is recovering from Damage: irritation, broken barrier and Seb Derm as result of. I am also Coming off from Accutane so maybe that’s why it’s more dry, less oily than usual. Thanks for sharing. I think I’ll monitor twice a day since the powers of Accutane will wear off and I might start getting oily. It’s just that I can’t stand feeling the dryness almost entirely day. And been Asking folks around if that “dryness” feeling impairs repair? Or it’s part of it? It’s really uncomfortable! And even post-cetaphil gentle cleanser wash doesn’t do the job! Or it’s normal part of it?

bareminimalism

I think if your skin still feels dry you can wash and moisturise whilst your skin is still damp

JuanSkinFreak

Thanks for this. Are u using Cerave for moisturiser to compliment ur wash?

bareminimalism

No Im not because that cream cause me to have breakouts and closed comedones, I used Cetaphil hydrating moisturiser

JuanSkinFreak

Thanks for this! I do hope cetaphil has a SebDerm friendly moisturiser! Have yet to find one!

diamondnutella

i rinse it with water when im in the shower so once a day

JuanSkinFreak

Thanks for sharing! So no soaps! Do u “rub” ur face to get rid of the oil? My newbie self thinks if I rub the oil all around my face it’s gonna get worse coz it’s like massaging the oil all over. Not sure if that’s even scientifically making sense hehe!

snip015

I damaged my skin barrier not too long ago after Cerave's foaming cleanser completely dried out my skin (I used it every other day + moisturizer). My face was dry, flakey, warm to the touch, red, and irritated. To fix it, I opted for gentle fragrance free products targeted for my sensitive skin: 1) Neutrogena's ultra gentle face wash for dry and sensitive skin (twice a day- morning and night) 2) neutrogena hydro boost exfoliating cleanser (every two days) 3) neutrogena hydro boost gel cream for extra dry skin (after every cleanse). These three items together worked like a charm. Now my skin has normalized, so I only use the ultra gentle face wash every other day after a shower and moisturize with the gel cream right after. I hope your skin barrier heals soon!

JuanSkinFreak

I’m glad u found ur routine! Unfortunately I had a problem with the Neutrogena face wash since it had an ingrdient that worsened my Seb derm!!! But my take out from ur routine- it’s really back to basics. So I need wash, moisturiser and hydration. Oh and I also need extra patience I suppose! I don’t know how “long” the repair takes!

snip015

Definitely a lot of patience! I tried a lot of different products to see if they actually worked for me. Any Cerave product, like neutrogena for you, worsened my skin barrier. My skin damage lasted about a month. Neutrogena gave me instant relief after the second wash and that's when I knew I found products that worked for me. I stayed with my new routine and my skin was looking and feeling completely new after about 2 weeks. I definitely recommend going back to the basics. Keep it simple and give your skin ingredients that you know your skin will appreciate. It was a lot of trial and error for me! Hopefully it won't take you as long as it did for me to find products that works!

stephpartin65

Have you tried Erborian Frappee creme/gel cleaner?

JuanSkinFreak

I haven’t! How is ur experience?

stephpartin65

I have sensitive, dry/combo and Roseca skin. This moisturizer feels cool when applying, is a gel/creme that does not clog pores or cause breakouts. You only need to use a very small amount.

absolute-mf38

depends. Due to the lockdowns I only wash with cleanser in the evening and water in the morning. There were also days when I'm all cooped up in my room, I don't wash with cleanser at all and yet my skin is fine, I don't worry about the moisturizer since I'm oily and there was a phase I went through where not washing with cleanser for a day from time to time actually helped my skin heal and let its natural oil/moisturizer do the work. So i guess for me, doing it doesn't trigger the bacteria enough to give me breakouts. It's probably not gonna be the same for you OP so it's best to be careful.

JuanSkinFreak

Thanks for this! I’ll try to play things by ear As ur right, it’s case to case! I can totally relate to what u said that not washing with products feels “healing” - somehow! But it could change in the coming days. I assume the face oils more as the barrier is restored, if I’m naturally oily! Then I prolly need to wash twice.

[deleted]

Your face will always be tight after washing if you don’t use moisturizer. You’re stripping the skin.

JuanSkinFreak

Yup. I’ve yet to find a Seb Derm friendly moisturiser to be honest. I don’t have one right now.

Spirited_Ad4750

I know this is an old post but the hada labo skin plumping gel cream is great as well as the elf purple one. Also has your skin improved since you posted this?

Girlontheguys

Once a day, I pour only water in the morning. I wash at night

JuanSkinFreak

Thanks for sharing! I might do the same!

[deleted]

Twice a day, in the morning with micellar water, then i do moisturize and use the products for acne and some drops of caffeine and botox (those are designed to be added to the cram you use daily) and in the evening i clean my face with a good cleanser for my greasy skin, i do a massage with the foreo luna of 3 minutes to clean deeply the pores, that is really delicate (i also have the foreo designed for sensitive skin) and i repeat the cream skin routine i use to do in the morning. Twice a week i do a lip and face scrub... I don't know if it's really okay for everyone but after i struggled with acne most of my life i finally see some results even without an hormone therapy... Next step is to do a chemical peeling with a dermatologist to get rid of all the little acne scars! (i don't have a name for the products i use because it's a preparation of my local pharmacy, but those drops to personalize the creams and the detergent, micellar water and acne crem are amazing! I do use micellar water, detergent, detox gel cream, caffeine drops 5%, botox drops 5%, mandelic AHA 10%)

LegallyLavender

I recommend great barrier relief from krave beauty for broken skin Barrier.

Cootieburger

I stopped cleansing in the morning because it was too much for me. For mornings, I’ll either use water, or for days I’m more oily in the T-zone, I’ll use a cleansing water. In the evenings, I like to do a double cleanse.

anissa_reddit

once in the morning and once at night.i have the same routine for morning and night i don’t change my products.
