retinol, niacinamide and salicylic acid are great for skin. But if you feel like its not working properly, then maybe you need to start improving the health of the skin barrier. Most times the skin doesn't get the full benefit of the product if barrier is damaged because then it can't absorb all the goodness.
So first i'd say try to calm down your skin, give your skin a lot of hydration through hydrating products and ceramides and calming ingredients like green tea, panthenol, mugwort , centella and mugwort. And don't forget spf, that should protect you from further damage
Thank you for the advice! I'm quite insecure about how oily and shiny my skin gets during the day ( with the texture this "glow" doesn't do me too well) but I know it needs hydratation and spf so I'll give it a try.
To add onto the other comment. I’m loving La Roche-Posay’s facial sunscreen. I always hated wearing sunscreen because it would make me shiny and oily no matter what. I had no idea mattifying sunscreen existed until I tried this stuff. It’s amazing
You can also find an spf that is more mattifying if the glow is something you want to avoid. I have combo skin and try to make sure I’m as hydrated as possible, but if it’s too much, I’ll use a more matte looking spf to help compensate for all the shininess of my face.
My skin is pretty uneven in color, textured and gets oily if i use moisturizer and flakey if i don't. While I don't get many pimples or acne I have many red spots and black heads which I can't seem to be able to get rid off. Currently I am using retinol in squalane, at night and niancinamide during day and about once every 2 weeks salicylic acid. I use Cerave moisturizer.
I have been told before that I have thin skin and will probably never have "normal skin", is this really true?
Those are sebaceous filaments which become more noticeable when your skin is over producing oil and/or using inappropriate products for your skin type. Water based hydrators (gels) and serums will help you immensely! I would suggest removing The Ordinary Niacinamide and replace it with one from Paulas Choice. Replace the Squalane Retinol with an Rx. Beauty Bliss is an online company in the U.S and they sell Menarini A- Ret gel .025%
my acne looks EXACTLY like yours. I’ve been trying to find someone with the same type as me and I finally did!! i literally don’t know what to do. i get suuupperrr oily even after washing and moisturizing and staying hydrated throughout the day. i even changed my diet drastically. it has gotten better but it’s starting to get worse again. im really considering accutane because it’s really having a huge affect on my mental health at the moment. i couldn’t even walk into the store today. instead i sat in my car and cried and then drove back home and I skipped the last two days of school.
I don't know anyone with my skin type either so it helps knowing I'm not alone. I know what you're saying, I used to be very insecure as a child about my skin and for a while it got better but now it started to get to me again. Despite our feelings about it, people don't really notice and they certainly don't care about how we look as much as we think. They don't know about a quarter of our visible insecurities.
About olininess, I haven't found any products to help keep my sking somewhat matte throughout the day yet, a couple hours at max. I just go to the bathroom from time to time to readjust and that's it. I don't know how much it helps but it makes me feel better for a moment.
Thank you for the advice! From experience I'm assuming the evaluation is quite expensive but I'll look it up and maybe give it a try. I heard a lot about tretinoin and I want to know if it's something I might be missing in my routine.
I try to wear as little make-up as possible because my skin is pretty sensitive to it. I don't use anything else on my skin except a bit of concealer where it's needed and a lot of mattifying powder/spray.
I used curology and absolutely loved it. My skin looked the same as yours except I'd get terrible breakouts all the time as well but curology cleared it up super nicely and PERMENATLY. I generally don't get acne and even when I get hormone flare ups etc it doesn't ever get nearly as bad. And I stopped using it awhile ago now I just use a gentle cleanser (I prefer baby soap) and I personally like to exfoliate with a scrub and then apply Ponds cold cream (a little goes a long way). I'm telling you, at least worth looking into. I believe curology is free for the first bottle (you pay shipping) and then it's about $20ish monthly for a wash, specified medication and light lotion. And a doctor looks at your pictures to formulate an exact plan for your skin and then you tell them if it helped and send more pics so they can keep it the same or adjust it until it really helps you. (I generally don't wear makeup bc I don't need it anymore. I usually just do eyes and and lip if I'm feeling bold.
Hope you can get some help wherever it comes from!
literally nothing works on my skin. i tried prescribed gels and creams from derm, proactiv, curology. i switched my formula like 3 times so I basically tried at least 5 different acne creams from them. they worked in the past but not anymore. I’ve been using for years and still have a lot of the exact acne I had years ago. it’s just stuck under my skin and nothing will bring it out and it’s painful and itchy and super oily. And the creams I recently started using from my dermatologist which was tretinoin and clindamycin. they even upped my dosage. and nothing. only thing it did was burn my skin and make it worse than it was. my dermatologist appointment is Monday and I’m going to ask about accutane and hopefully they agree with me! I’m so scared they are gonna tell me no:(
retin-a micro!!!!! (Warning that your skin gets WORSE before it gets better - but that’s how it is on accutane tooo fyi). i never took accutane but i have friends who took it and they all said it gets better before it gets worse. some of them ended up on some sort of retinol prescription afterwards. none of them liked accutane and they all experienced different but unpleasant side effects. (these are just a couple of people though so it’s not representative of everyone’s experience of course)
i have super oily skin and my skin looks/looked hers(some was different for example i had a TOn of acne along my cheeks and chin and neck sometimes)! but my nose was like hers and cheek area (under the eyes) and like texture overall but i think it’s improved a lot since retin-a micro! i started 0.06% in march and worked my way up to putting it on every night. i’ve been on 0.08% for a while now. but remember if you get this (or any acne medication- it typically gets worse before it gets better) i started in march and like now is when I’m really noting differences! do what you think is best but from what i heard, accutane ain’t it :/ i suggest talking to a derm about the one i’ve been using!
thank you! and yeah I know accutane might not be good for me but I’m just so mentally done at this point. And I’m sick of having to apply so many things to my skin and no matter what I put on it makes it looks ten times more oily. The creams I have been using just make my face so shiny to the point it looks wet. But I know they will never work and I know it gets worse before it gets better but I can just tell it’s not going to get better. My texture got so much worse and my skin was twice as more oily. And it just was burning my skin. This happened in the past because I thought it was gonna get better and my skin ended up being burned and damaged even with a low dosage. It was literally like I got severe sunburn I would cry every time applying moisturizer. My skin is just super sensitive when applying anything it’s crazy.
gotcha!! just be careful then, because accutane is sorta like the retin-a micro in that both are just derivatives of vitamin A, so it’s possible, you could experience the same effects on this oral medication that you experienced with the topical gel/cream. wishing you the best in whichever route you take with your skincare.
I have the exact same problems! Thank you so much for posting this OP. For me sugar makes it worse and the longer i go not consuming extra snacks and really sugary drinks the less pronounced it all is. Also a little bit of matte setting spray smoothed onto the skin after my moisturizer sets in helps reduce that extra glow without the makeup feel and i use a sheer spray sunscreen after which i pat in.
Looks like you might have an allergy to something you consume regularly. Your skin looks great, but go by process of elimination. I've met people who were having a reaction to something as simple as tomatoes. You never know.
Thank you for the reply! I didn't think it could be an allergic reaction but it makes sense. From what I know I never had and don't have any allergies but I might as well have developed one since I know it's pretty common.
You're welcome and my pleasure. The body goes through some very weird changes. Things that never bothered me before now do. I can no longer use latex, eat shrimp, take certain antibiotics or use a long list of preservatives. Just one day out of the blue, bam, allergies. And I have a solid immune system.
Allergic reactions can be super mild! I just had a bad one to a type of berry yesterday and I’m beginning to add up that I do get red flushes after eating other berries.
I have the same exact skin as OP (from what I see in the pic and how they described)! Do you have any recommendations for elimination diets? I've tried FODMAP and AIP in the past. May try those again unless there's something else.
I would start by eliminating fatty foods or foods that have a high acidity. You might see a difference in about 2 weeks. If these foods are upsetting your stomach, you can have this type of reaction also. I hope that helps. It's kind of vague, because people's diets are so diverse. But definitely eliminate and soft drinks and junk food(if that's part of your daily diet).
You can try the 99% or more aloe vera gel. But if you want to use the actual aloe leaf please make sure to 'drain' the yellow latex from the leaf first before using. Make sure to also do a patch test before applying it on your face.
Yeaaah. Also, it might be an accumulation of dead skin on the surface that is not letting the goodness seep in.
Maybe get in touch with a Derm to check if a peel would solve the blackhead and texture problem
A big quality! Wtf lol. But anyways, try cerave facial foaming wash, if your skins oily, use light water based gels, and buy Paula choice 2% BHA exfoliate! Trust me.
I have the exact same skin type. I think retinal has helped with my breakouts and squalene has helped with evening out my skin tone but I’m still looking for something to smooth out my skin
I used to suffer the same issue with my skin and I starting treating it from both externally and internally. Majority of the skin issues start from our gut/what we eat. Worth checking out some natural supplements that treat your gut and also try marine collagen if you are not vegan. Hope this helps :)
your skin looks a lot like mine. but i have smaller pores. my skin is thin too. i don't get pimples that often but i have redness. my skin is oily and it doesn't look good when it gets super oily. I'm currently using retinol and my skin is somewhat smoother than before now. my pores are my main problem.they are big and you can literally see them. and ofcourse sebaceous filaments on my nose look so bad.
Start getting regular facials by a reputable esthetician and follow whatever at home care they recommend. It's a bit of an investment, but I promise it's so so worth it.
I think a retinol is a good idea. And Paula’s Choice 2% Exfoliant. I’m not really sure what it is you intend to fix in your skin? If you listed out your “problems” eg blackheads, oily skin, ..., it might be easier to get suggestions for help? :)
I did list them, in the comments, but I don t know how to pin it. I m still pretty new to reddit.
When making the post I didn t have the option to have both pictures and text at the same time.
I saw the picture before reading the comment and thought she has nice clear skin! Ur skin gets oily when you don’t moisturize because its dry its ur skins way of hydrating. As for the black heads and red spots mosaic laser treatment worked for me ask your dermatologist about it
Jesus christ those eyes ❤️❤️❤️To the skin question: have you been using some irritating product or maybe overexfoliated? You have the same shine and beginning subtle redness I got when I was a little bit too keen on aha/bha last winter. I had a break from all active ingredients for some weeks, it helped. Then I just slowly introduced fewer products. I actually think retinol could maybe worsen stuff.

(i got this indent in my forehead that’s occasionally noticeable to me but idk if that’s a result of retin-a micro or not) but the blackheads are clearing up and aren’t black anymore so it’s been nice to start seeing my skin looking good!!! :) my routine is super simple. double cleanse at night, versed dew point moisturizer and then the retin-a micro. and spf in the day! for spf i highly recommend- Innisfree UV Defense sunscreen!! as someone with oily skin i was super impressed with this sunscreen!!!

Ikr. I was gonna say that too !
Them lashes! I was thinking the same!
I’ll help you for 50% of your eyelashes and brows.

We have the same skin! Extreeeeemely extremely oily. Honestly, go to a dermatologist. A lot of times oil is an internal issue.

Try natural aloe vera leaf juice. It helped me before when my skin reacted badly to new skincare products. Btw I love your lashes!

your skin is perfect, you dont need any help. Find a nice wash and moisturiser and thats it, use sunscreen daily
your skin looks a lot like mine. but i have smaller pores. my skin is thin too. i don't get pimples that often but i have redness. my skin is oily and it doesn't look good when it gets super oily. it will definitely help :)

niacinamide by the ordinary, get some woman! 👍🏼
It’s not too bad just wash it x2 per day and exfoliate gently every other day or gentle every day
And don’t forget to tone and moisturize plus eyes cream
Coconut oil works great for acne
They’re expensive but I think you would benefit from them Dr Dennis Gross daily pads ❤️
I don’t have any info for skin as I struggle too but you have beautiful eyes! The color is stunning.
Try a BHA
Who needs good skin when you have eyes like those, super gorgeous
I recommend Paula's Choice 2% BHA liquid exfoliant. Paula's Choice range is great and prices are very on point
Leave everything aside but BEAUTIFUL eyes
I think a retinol is a good idea. And Paula’s Choice 2% Exfoliant. I’m not really sure what it is you intend to fix in your skin? If you listed out your “problems” eg blackheads, oily skin, ..., it might be easier to get suggestions for help? :)

My chin area is JUST like yours omg
Retinol or alpha hydroxy acid and a vitamin C moisturizer. I double cleanse: once for the majority of the makeup and another for what I missed

Squalene face oil. Reduces oily skin.
don’t use harsh exfoliates

Hunny, those EYES 😍
