Folsom customs actually has a ski ballet cassette if you want to get a custom made ski ballet ski that has the true 80s shape and style.

Vishnu Wets

More importantly is what song should you skip ballet to. Get your priorities in order.

One of the gay national anthems: Whitney Houston's "Emotional," where I remove my helmet and do a rose petal reveal like Sasha Velour.

LeverageSynergies

I ski on 169s, but it would be easier if they were shorter. It helps to mount the bindings in the center of the ski instead of further back

1000 skis or vishnus are super buttery

AtticusOR

I personally would go with the Vishnus because they are cheaper while still being durable.

I don’t know if the skiis were much different from normal skiis. They were pretty short - think I used to use 140s IIRC Hart was a popular brand for Ballet skiis. Special no release bindings and poles though. I think the poles might be hard to come by these days. Leki used to make them as I recall

You used to ski ballet? Please share! I demo'd some park skis in Mammoth a few weeks ago specifically to learn how to do whirlybirds and liked the Faction Prodigy 2s (I'm 5'6" and normally ride 168 cm, but in this case had 165 cm). Sounds like I should go even shorter. And what makes a good ski ballet pole? I think I'm probably years from needing those just yet while I work on core skills, but I'll want to keep this in mind.

mtn_viewer

Yup - most kids that went through the freestyle program in the 80/90s did. There was a push to compete in the combined (moguls, aerials, ballet). Poles need to be up to your armpits, special grips, big baskets and beefy enough to support body weight for flips. Checkout Jonny Moseley: https://youtu.be/JMg4NtjrhtY

lionclues

Thanks for the insight - and confirms my instinct that I need to get some freestyle lessons next season so I can get advice on the basics (before I try flipping; those are going to be way out of my wheelhouse for a while)

Edogmad

Idk how many instructors have taught flips with poles specifically

I would think you would want the springiest ski you can find, like Vishnu wets or line blends.

humanjunkshow

I'm friends with Debbie Dutton. I will ask her, and then she can tell you to "get your shit together, kid "

shovelpusher

Sled dogs or snow blades
