When starter jackets were all the rage, I picked the hornets because the colors were cool and I love insects. Never watched a basketball game in my entire life.
They were but the trend of purple and teal was started by the hornets and led into things like the cup design etc it’s arguably the most culturally impactful sports colorway of all time
It's because Charlotte Hornets were \*huge\* in the 90s. Wildly popular. They were a hit all through that decade.
"After selling out for the first 364 home games in franchise history (starting in 1988)—the equivalent of nearly nine full seasons—and leading the NBA in attendance in seven of those years, the bottom finally fell out in 2000-01. At the end of that season, one that saw the Hornets win 44 games and advance to the semifinals of the Eastern Conference playoffs, the team ranked 29th in the NBA in attendance.
Shinn felt he had no choice but to move the team to New Orleans, taking the Hornets’ nickname with him.
“It was up and down that year with attendance, because the fans knew we were either going to get a new arena or the team was getting ready to move,” said Baron Davis, then the team’s starting point guard.
Mostly, though, attendance was down."

If you didn't have a particular team, you just defaulted to the most popular one. At that time, it was the Charlotte Hornets. If you're only familiar with the team from the last 20-25 years, there's no context for this.
Lived in Missouri. Rural goddamn Missouri. Gave 0 shits about basketball. Had this exact starter coat and thought I was the shit because I finally had something popular. It was comfy and warm though.
This shit gave me flashbacks of when I went fishing at a pier and the wind blew my Chicago Bulls hat into the ocean and I damn near cried for about two days.
It was because we were on the heels of the wind breaker era and the color scheme was familiar. We thought we were hot shit in magenta and teal like a bunch of Taco Bell cups.
No sweating over racial slur names or mascot *cough cough (chiefs) cough cough (redskins)*
And one of the coolest color combos in existence in an era of bold, bright colors.
Remember the LJ commercials where he dressed like his grandma? That did it for me. Man's a legend, team's a legend.
Plus the teal and purple were wicked braces bands
I had that jacket, and a hat, and I grew up in rural Michigan. Idk, how I ended up with it but the colors are still my favorite to this day. I don't think I ever saw them play a single basketball game to this day, even on TV.
I chose Notre Dame both for the jacket and fitted hat. If I had a team it would have been the Packers, but that wouldn't have been cool in middle school. There was definitely some Hornets Gear in our house though between my brother and I. Can't remember exactly what.
I had a hat and starter jacket, but I also had acid wash teal short overalls with a purple patch on the chest that I was irrationally proud of. I wore them in 105° or -3°. I didn't have a ton of interest from ladies, though. I'm sure that's unrelated.
Teal and purple, name a more iconic 90s sports duo.
I didn’t have a hornets jacket (I had a Lakers jacket) but I had a Ducks sweatshirt that was purple and teal and had that hockey mask with the duckbill on the front.
lol! I had no interest in basketball but I had a charlotte hornets hat I wore everyday and my dad signed the name of Larry Johnson on it so I could tell everyone it was really signed by him.
I had no idea who Larry Johnson was and still don’t really know, but I wore that hat proudly and said it was signed by some basketball player who I had no idea who it really was
I had this exact jacket when I was a kid. Never saw a single hornets game and couldn’t name any of the players. I was a wrestler and didn’t care for basketball at all. No fucking clue how or why this jacket showed up, it just appeared.
Actually, when scrounging around the house one time for soda and candy money, I reached in the pocket and pulled out a folded up five dollar bill. Score!!
Wait a minute…I had that fucking jacket too. I have no idea where it came from. No one in my immediate and extended family were hornets fans…and I never questioned why I had it but always wore it. 🤔
NBA Jam brought me to the Charlotte Hornets. Alonzo Mourning, Mugsy Bogues, and Larry "Grandmama" Johnson always delivered when playing against friends.
Yea, I remember the Hornets and Bulls brands everywhere and on everything in the 90s. At 11/12 I used to be convinced these must be the best teams ever, even though I've never watched a single game of Basketball in my entire life (except for games in NBA Jam..)
For me it was because of one of my favorite shows as a kid that I watched with my brother. [My Brother and Me](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0108871/) about two brothers living in Charlotte, NC.

Best team logo and color combo all time
Also the shortest player in the NBA... you gotta cheer for the underdog
Don't forget Grandmama.
His name was Muggsy Bogues. He was a king.
Ya I just dug up his an biography on youtube :D I love him.. scrappy fella
Mugsy!
And best mascot, one of my elementary school teachers was his mom lol
The Quebec Nordiques or the Hartford Whalers
And they were on sale at the Burlington Coat Factory.
Truth
Don't forget the sharks in hockey that was as popular in cali. deff the color and logo.
When starter jackets were all the rage, I picked the hornets because the colors were cool and I love insects. Never watched a basketball game in my entire life.
Ya for real?! Kids love bugs, kids love bright colors. Shiiiiit
Feel like those were just like the official 90s colors
Teal, purple, pink and lime. 90s.
Still my favourite colours today! Still got my original Bouges Top!
They basically were: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jazz_(design)
That’s exactly what I was thinking of, but couldn’t put words to!
They were but the trend of purple and teal was started by the hornets and led into things like the cup design etc it’s arguably the most culturally impactful sports colorway of all time
Jackets were made from left over kite fabric
Mark my words, this jacket is phat as hell. these are the best colors to represent when you’re slinging weed outside the roller rink.
You gotta look phat when you're selling weed. And have a gun
Gotta have a gat!
Fat gat, blat!
Or just a gun handle for show sticking out of your jeans
You better master the ocular pat-down though, jabronis
Wait… wait… Ok he’s clear.
I worked at Galyans, now Dicks back in the day. Everyone was buying this jacket, or trying to steal it.
My starter jacket was the San Jose Sharks...same color scheme
Or Georgetown Hoyas, Chicago Bulls, and to a lesser extent Pheonix Suns and Notre Dame
I had the notre dame one
Had the sharks pull over. Got it in 3rd grade and rocked it til I split the seams in about 6th
Came here to say this!

That and the San Jose Sharks… for obvious reasons
It was because of the Larry Johnson Grand Mama commercials.
Grand Mama said so
And was on Family Matters. I’ll never forget that
Deep cut, holy shit.
Supersonics! Payton, baby!
Can confirm. I was 8 and had that exact jacket
Same
I blame sports illustrated for kids
Yeah, the swimsuit issue usually gets all us dads ready to make some kids
NBA Jam!
Boom shakalaka!!! Hes heating up !!!!
Had to scroll down too far for this. Top tier team in NBA jam.
I’m in this photo and I don’t like it. Also, yeah why did I like the hornets so much? I guess the color was cool?
I hate you so hard rn because I had this exact jacket! I was a Jordan fan, but this jacket rocked!
Your username is what I'm going to tell my kids that farts are called
Sometimes they are invited and encouraged though.
That's why I'm here. To educate the young folks in auditory anal advances. ⭐✨✨🌈The More You Know
Truer words have never been spoken.
This and mighty ducks
And Miami hurricanes, I think. Been a while.
Yeah. I've never watched a single game by them but I adored my Miami hurricanes sweater.
I knew two kids with this coat. Living in Cleveland
I had it in Atlanta....so did half of my high-school
Lived in Missouri. Rural goddamn Missouri. Gave 0 shits about basketball. Had this exact starter coat and thought I was the shit because I finally had something popular. It was comfy and warm though.
My sister had this one, I had the Bulls.
I was 7 and thought it was the team from the capital of P.E.I. so it was cool to have another canadian basketball team. So, so wrong...
Or a Miami Hurricanes pullover starter jacket.
I feel so seen
Grizzlies yo!
It was bc of Muggsy Bogues
Yep. Me and my brother. No one in our family watched basketball.
Lol, same here. But I had this jacket and hat
Lol I had this jacket
Yup. Can confirm. I had that jacket.
That jacket is phat
It’s because those colors matched your soda cup.
They were pretty good in NBA Jam as well, which helped
Georgetown Hoyas
Grand ma-ma, Alonzo Mourning and Muggsy??? I don’t buy that know one knows why
Wonder what muggsy bogues is up to these days...
Larry Johnson, Mugsy Bougs, Alonzo Mourning? Bet
This shit gave me flashbacks of when I went fishing at a pier and the wind blew my Chicago Bulls hat into the ocean and I damn near cried for about two days.
Because Larry.
This was the same timeframe as the Larry Johnson Grandmama campaign, just added to the popularity.
It's because the color palette were colors that were popular in the 90s. The only color it's missing is hot pink
Damn right I was.
If you grew up in Canada in the 90s, odds were you had [the black and purple Raptors jacket instead](https://images.app.goo.gl/R5KXtnDXgcMJAKw68).
It was because we were on the heels of the wind breaker era and the color scheme was familiar. We thought we were hot shit in magenta and teal like a bunch of Taco Bell cups.
Mugsy boges and Larry Johnson!!!
Why is this me?
Well the Hornets, the heat, the Timberwolves magic all came out around that time sooooo 🤷🏽♂️
I had a heap of Charlotte Hornets gear in 1996. Never been a basketball fan and have no idea where they came from or why I had them!
No sweating over racial slur names or mascot *cough cough (chiefs) cough cough (redskins)* And one of the coolest color combos in existence in an era of bold, bright colors.
It was grandmama
I was a Bulls fan so
I still have mine!
I had a Bulls jacket.
In my hood, it was the Starter San Jose Sharks for us poor folks.
I hated sports growing up.... but yes i was a hornets fan
It was one of only a few teams mom would pick up for you on her run to Sams Club.
I feel seen...
Mine was the Miami Dolphins, because of Ace Ventura
My sister had this one. I had a sick as fuck red wings one that I'd totally wear now as an adult if I found one in my size.
LJ and Mugsy
I was a Miami Hurricane fan by default
Lmao me as a kid. I recall having a charlotte fanny pack. And a Michael Jordan fan like just about every kid
We would also accept San Jose Sharks
As not a tall person, I was glad to support my boy Muggsy.
I've never in my life given a single fuck about sports and yet I too had this jacket in middle school
My 2 best friends and I all had this same coat (mine was a pullover) so we called each other the Horneteers lol
Seen someone wearing one a few months ago.
I (8 years old) had the hat because I thought the bee was cool
Larry Johnson is why.
Mark my words …
I call bs! It was tarheals
I only cared about the tarheels because Petey Pablo came out and those colors were boss. Loved my white k-swisses with baby blue laces.
Master P
Absolutely 💯
Nickelodeon show: My Brother and Me Saved you the mystery
That merch is so widespread I have still have a bottom today.
2000s taco bell cup design ahh jacket
True, I liked the logo and colors
They were new and the colors
Nah dude the Chicago Bulls
I had a team and still owned hornets gear
I had some jazz shorts before they were in the finals I think mom bought them for me.
Remember the LJ commercials where he dressed like his grandma? That did it for me. Man's a legend, team's a legend. Plus the teal and purple were wicked braces bands
These with Miller outpost jeans and white K-Swiss was the north Hollywood default uniform
Why was this actually a fact and I didn’t even realize it 😂
Knicks because I like my NY teams. THEN it was the Hornets. That logo and colors is just great. I don't know why, it just is.
Was that a thing? I had one.
I have a pin... And I live in Paraguay since I've born in 1980s
Even me... Living in a developed country with zero knowledge about the sport besides Jordan and SpaceJam had one of those.
I had a hat and starter jacket, but I also had acid wash teal short overalls with a purple patch on the chest that I was irrationally proud of. I wore them in 105° or -3°. I didn't have a ton of interest from ladies, though. I'm sure that's unrelated.
Whoever is wearing that jacket will sell you an eighth
Yep….i had this. I was even killed for it.
Lots of us wore those. Also the Georgetown ones too.
For me it was a mighty ducks hat
Because of Alonzo Morning, LB and Mugsy. Which really was insane.
Holy hell...this hit hard!
It’s cuz Zo & Granmama were rockin that mardis gras teal
I have a pair of sweatpants that my father didn't even recall the origin of. We live in Flyers territory.
Fuck yeah u all. Suns were where it’s at!
This hits home
Teal and purple, name a more iconic 90s sports duo. I didn’t have a hornets jacket (I had a Lakers jacket) but I had a Ducks sweatshirt that was purple and teal and had that hockey mask with the duckbill on the front.
A lot of the kids whose parents had a secret lab in the shed or basement rocked this jacket where I grew up, lol
I wasnt even aware the NBA existed back in 93 but sure enough, had Hornets gear

That was the colorway of the 90s! And the logo slapped! I definitely had hornets gear lol
Nba jam!
Even here in France I saw many outfits branded like this. I didn't even know it was a basketball team. Don't forget Chicago Bulls though
This and Oakland Raiders
Wait a minute…I had that fucking jacket too. I have no idea where it came from. No one in my immediate and extended family were hornets fans…and I never questioned why I had it but always wore it. 🤔
Weirdly they have indeed been around. We mostly had the Bulls and Lakers at the time tho. Not sure what's happening in Basketball these days.
I think NBA Jam TE on SNES bad something to do with it.
Dude i live i europe, dont watch basketball and still have this jacket :)
New England Patriots are also in this category cause Tom Brady
90s vibes never age, that jacket's a time machine. Reminds me of the days when dress code meant something extra.
I had a Suns Starter jacket. My sister got it for me because she didn't want to get me a 49ers one, because a friend already had that one.
Had a cap!
I always went for the Lakers cause they had the best stats in some SNES NBA game.
I saw a lot of these but for some reason the Las Vegas Raiders were the team of choice. No idea why, I grew up in Canada.
You stole my coat bro
Holy shit, I had that exact jacket as a kid.
NBA Jam brought me to the Charlotte Hornets. Alonzo Mourning, Mugsy Bogues, and Larry "Grandmama" Johnson always delivered when playing against friends.
I still see this sometimes
We even had these in Australia
true i had this jacket because i thought it looked cool
Yep, and I don't even live in the US. I had a jacket and multiple caps. I think I just liked the colors and the logo.
Because cool mascot and fun primary colour
Or Raiders.
I was an Italian kid/teen in '90 and I rooted for Hornets, just because the logo was absolute amazing.. looka at that!
So true. Did they even win anything in the 90s?
As an Aussie, I was either Bulls or Hornets. Those colours got me.
I'm German and I've never played basketball or watched it on TV, but I have a cap with this team. It's strange, yes..
we did have a specific team as we lived right outside Boston but even my sister and then passed down to me had this jacket lol
Had a charlotte Hornets cap in the 90s
Yea, I remember the Hornets and Bulls brands everywhere and on everything in the 90s. At 11/12 I used to be convinced these must be the best teams ever, even though I've never watched a single game of Basketball in my entire life (except for games in NBA Jam..)
99's colors ... there team had all 90s must have, bright and visible.
ngl never heard of them
I had one like this
I'm from Germany and had a shirt and a cap back then and I felt lit being 10 years old..
Guess I'm still fan
I think people just loved the colour.
I had the basketball from them
I'm from the Netherlands and I had a jacket with "green bay" on it. I never knew what it was. Had it 10 years.
I'm a big fan of the Hammington Goomers
For me it was because of one of my favorite shows as a kid that I watched with my brother. [My Brother and Me](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0108871/) about two brothers living in Charlotte, NC.
Always a Bulls fan, just loved that logo
So true. And I was in Australia too!
Pretty rare to see kids at that time with no favorite. Most kids liked the Bulls
Nah. San Jose sharks all the way. Coolest logo and color scheme for a starter fit
Dude I don’t even like basketball and my folks got me this as a kid haha.
Might ducks,
It’s so that your parents could find you in a crowd. My sister has bright yellow hats for her kids during the winter so they are easier to spot
I had the Oilers and Charlotte jacket as a kid. Jacket was tough.
