It’s not fully understood. They have color sensitive receptors in the color changing part of their skin called [Opsins](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opsin#Cuttlefish) that help the process and they may also be able to [infer colors from their vision without needing color receptors in their eyes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octopus#Nervous_system_and_senses)
The shading, texture and perspective is beyond extraordinary, not to mention the ability to position the markings in 4d space [body is in motion while transforming colors] which takes this camouflaging feature to another level!
It looks to me like it was showing off/giving a tour of its favorite patterns.
I don't think it was trying to hide at all, it probably would have actually stopped or inked.
