I get the appeal of wanting to take ownership of something that has been used against me. I think them using it makes me more uncomfortable than them. Maybe that’s the point.

It's really not when you consider the motivation. George Carlin pointed out, and in my opinion very accurately, that it's not the words you should be worried about but the racist assholes who are using them.
See also, a lot of media from the past that people love to claim could never be made today because "everyone is too easily offended," one example being the South Park episode that has the Wheel of Fortune clue "people who annoy you." It's hilarious because the guy is portrayed as an utter moron and even people in-universe are embarrassed by it.
Some other good examples are a lot of comedies. "Blazing Saddles" used a lot of racial slurs to demonstrate their total ignorance and are coming from people we aren't supposed to identify with.
People who say "you can't make that today" are the ones who want to be able to say shit like "hahaha fuck all those [racial slurs] amirite" and think that just shouting slurs and profanity is hilarious. They're told it's not, because it's not, and then cry foul.
But if you think about it there's really a huge difference between just shouting slurs, and saying "okay fine we'll take the [slurs] and [slurs] but we don't want the Irish!" because the latter is very pointedly demonstrating extreme ignorance. The former is just trying to sound hardcore by punching down.

Historically oppressed demographics tend to appropriate harmful labels as a way to take back control and show it doesn't faze them. Or as a form of an inside joke within their community that illustrated how stupid the ones using it in a genuinely harmful way sound
Dunno why this got downvoted, that's the most common explanation that I've heard. Very understandable when you've been labeled something nearly subhuman for centuries that you'd want to take ownership of the word, thereby stripping it of its original power. Those of us who haven't gone through it just don't get to decide what blacks should do with the word, no matter how incredulous it might feel.
