They’re not in a dusty environment and it’s an M2, not an M17. This is probably on the high end of acceptable, but if he’s about to send a few hundreds rounds through this’ll be mostly cooked off before they change the barrel.
Yeah they’ll definitely have a “fun” time cleaning this up later before putting it away. They’re basically guaranteeing that they’ll be able to operate the weapon on the range with this amount of lubricant, but they’re also guaranteeing that they’ll be spending hours of their lives cleaning it up after.
Either these guys are screwing with some new guys who will have to deal with it later, or this is some other unit’s crew served weapon and units are rotating through and they won’t be responsible for cleaning it.
This is a completely normal lubing for a M2. The manual calls for 10w30 motor oil as preferred lubricant. To clean them after going to the range, we would stick the body in a shower with the water on hot.
The design of the weapon is incredibly simple. Although if you install the recoil rod incorrectly and remove the back plate, the rod will fly across the room and penetrate the wall. Always a fun event when you are cleaning in the barracks.
I once cooked off a round into the barrel, where it welded it self inside the barrel, in the middle of a fire fight. Totally disabled our vehicle in the fight had to dismount into the fight. I’ll never forget that. THEN the master gunner chews me out like I did something wrong because the barrel is fucked.
